Harold Wilson once famously said “A week is a long time in politics”, and he wasn’t kidding. In the past seven days we have seen a huge swing to the right across most of the European Union, as people suffering from the austerity of recession reject socialist ideals for the more “looking after number one” principals of conservatism. Closer to home Manilva’s Town Hall has been thrown into turmoil after two councillors from the independent socialist ASM party jumped ship putting the IU/ASM coalition into the minority. It will be interesting to see the results of the horsetrading currently going on to form a new majority coalition - will we see the IU pact with the PSOE or PP, or maybe even a PSOE, PP, and the two rebel councillors joining forces to oust Antonia Muñoz and the IU? Stranger things have happened. Enough of politics, now that summer is well and truly here, we should turn our attention to more pleasant topics. We are now entering the Fiesta and Feria season with numerous events on the programme for the next month. Some major events include Noche de San Juan on the 23rd June, the midsummer celebrations, taking place on many of the Coast’s beaches. For many this heralds the true start of the summer so make sure you note it in your diary. Another major festival is Virgen del Carmen, on the 16th July, when the fishermen of the region pay homage to their patron saint. You can find full details of these events and more in this month’s issue, as well as on our website www.theresident.es On a serious note, now that the summer is here, there are just a few things to be careful of. Please watch your kids around swimming pools. Every year we suffer the tragedy of fatal pool accidents, often through a moment’s lack of supervision, so make sure someone is keeping an eye on them. The other big danger of the summer is fire. Apart from the obvious precautions such as not lighting fires or barbecues in the campo, or carelessly discarding cigarette ends, be careful when pulling your car off the road, a hot exhaust or brakes has been the cause of many a fire. Sorry if I sound a bit preachy, but with a little bit of common sense, we can all enjoy the coming summer months with peace of mind. Until next month...

beneficiar a 52 desempleados.

Melero calls on Junta to push through Plan Memta projects San Roque Councillor Manuel Melero has said he shares the anger of jobless in the municipality over the delay of Plan Memta, an employment programme initiated by the Junta de Andalucia to which San Roque council have presented two projects which would benefit some 94 unemployed locals. The councillor went on to say “we have over 3,700 unemployed who have been promised measures to alleviate their difficult situation, and which have yet to materialise. The situation is becoming untenable and here is an urgent need for central and regional governments to respond to the alarming situation these people find themselves in”.

He pointed out that the aim is to increase the number of local workers in existing and new businesses, through the Employment Club run by the Municipal Economic Development Agency (Amdel) which provides enployment advice. Other measures could also be instigated such as favouring companies that employ local workers, etc. Amdel has submitted two programmes to the Junta de Andalucia under the Plan Memta, and despite the applications being made in March and April, so far they have received no reply from the regional administration. The selection of beneficiaries of the Plan Memta is based on a set of criteria laid down by the law.

The first of these projects would create 52 jobs, and will cover 31 posts for staff and labourers to undertake general improvements in the municipality, as well as 21 positions for workers at the Carteia site. The second projects is for 42 jobs covering various services such as cultural guides, beach cleaning, fire fighters, child support workers, etc. The Plan Memta is aimed at unemployed persons who have contributed a minimum of 180 days during 2008, and the Andalucian Employment Service undertakes the selection of candidates for each position.

Estepona signs revised planning agreement with Saudi Royal family The mayor of Estepona and Fiasal Hikmat Asaly, a representative of the Saudi Royal Family’s “Asturion Foundation”, have signed a revised planning agreement which will see the go ahead for a development of 1,440 luxury homes in the El Paraiso area of Estepona. The agreement is worth 8 million euros to the Town Hall coffers, which will be paid in four instalments, as well as bringing much needed jobs for the local construction sector on this project which is scheduled to begin next year. The revisions take into account suggestions and concerns expressed by the various political groups at an approval meeting held on the 20th March this year. The development will cover an area of just under 60 hectares (approx 150 acres) and will include some 413 VPO subsidised housing units, and around 30,000 square metres of land will be reserved for public use, and road infrastructure linking the area with neighbouring urbanisations.

Noche de San Juan in Casares Casares are organising a Grand Latin Fiesta on the beach to celebrate this year’s Noche de San Juan later this month. Activities begin at 10 pm on the beach in front of Marina de Casares with entertainers, dancers and other surprises, followed by a live concert by Panamanian trumpeter Eddy McLean and his band Merensalsa who will perform their lively blend of merengue and salsa. Eddy and his band have performed with such top acts as El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, El Combo Belga,

Celia Cruz amongst others. At around midnight the traditional bonfire will be lit, and this year the figures have been produced by Casares Costa residents under the supervision of the artist Juan Oliva. Radio on the Costa This year Radio Casares will be broadcasting live from Casares Costa for Noche de San Juan. The show starts at 10 am and local residents will be invited to participate in the programme.

Digitilisation of Casares historical municipal archives The local authorities in Casares are continuing the mammoth task of transferring the municipality’s historical archives into digital form to provide easier access to this wealth of material for researchers, officials and the general public, whilst at the same time preserving the original documents from damage and deterioration. Amongst the items to be scanned into the system are a number

of record books from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries detailing fiscal, property and legal activities during this period. The process is being carried out using specialist equipment which can scan the books without the need to unbind them and the resulting files will be recorded initially in the uncompressed TIFF format, but will eventually be available in a compressed format allowing for easier access.

The project began in 2007, in conjunction with Manilva, and this particular session will see some 4,500 pages being scanned. The project is being funded by a grant of 3,000€ from the Junta de Andalucia, and the town council will continue to petition the regional authorities for grants to eventually digitalise all the historical records.

All the participants were presented with two tickets for Tivoli World. The older girls were chosen by a jury comprising of Juan Luís Villalón Ortega, Sonia Saborido Cózar, Juan Roca, Domingo Pineda Domínguez, José Carlos Castaños and Nora Gaggero Mir.

Augusto Gil Prieto y Yolanda Holgado

Councillors resign Manilva’s coalition town council has been thrown into disarray by the resignation today of two ASM councillors, Augusto Gil Prieto and Yolanda Holgado. The Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz, whose left wing Izquierda Unida party has governed in coalition with the independent ASM (Manilva Socialist Group) since 2007 is said to be in emergency talks with her party to find a way forward and retain control of the local government. In a joint declaration of resignation, registered at the Town Hall on Friday, 5th June, Augusto Gil, councillor for Commerce, Tourism, Promotion and Image, and Yolanda Holgado, councillor for Culture, Choirs & Carnivals and

the Municipal School of Music, have cited a disillusionment and loss of confidence in the current government leadership as their reason for resigning. In their resignation letter they have stated that the decision has not been taken lightly and has come after a lot of deliberation. They went on to criticise the leadership of both Antonia Muñoz and the leader of the ASM Emilio Lopez Berenguer and declared that they did not wish to compromise their principles and beliefs by continuing to be part of that regime. In the 2007 elections the Izquierda Unida took 5 of the 17 seats with the PP, PSOE, and ASM each taking 4, which gave the IU the position of power to form a

Excursion to the El Chorro Gorge

coalition, which they did with the ASM giving them a 1 seat majority on the Town Council. Their resignation means that the two councillors will stay on the council as independents and could conceivably pact with a coalition of the PP and PSOE which would given them a three vote majority and lead to a change of government and a new Mayor.

Mons Calpe Suite A TRANSFORMATION AT THE TOP OF THE ROCK If you like most people living on the Costa or even local Gibraltarians have not been up the Cable Car in a while, we recommend you do. The entire classic 1960s top station building has undergone a complete transformation and is looking truly spectacular All terraces have been retiled, all balustrades have been upgraded to stainless steel and some stone cladding has been af ixed to the building adding an extra decorative feature which also protects key areas from the often all too destructive resident pack of apes and the views are still stunning! A local contractor, Continental Design, were not only given the task to give a much needed face lift to the exterior of the Top Station but were also asked to redesign the Mons Calpe Suite, a private function room located within the Top Station complex. Anyone who may recall the Mons Calpe Pub of the 1980’s would ind it dif icult recognising the place today. Justin Marston and his team at Continental Design have transformed the interior into a modern yet contemporary venue it to host any number of events be it corporate functions, weddings or celebrations. They have mixed a blend of stone, wood, glass and stainless steel to create a stylish yet comfortable new feel to the suite. Perched 412m at the very Top of the Rock of Gibraltar the Mons Calpe Suite is the most spectacular and unique venue in Gibraltar and in Southern Spain. Located within the Cable Car Top

Pride in Duquesa In recent years residents and visitors to Manilva have commented on how Puerto de la Duquesa, once considered by many to be the jewel in Manilva’s tourism crown, has become somewhat downtrodden and careworn, and had begun to lose its attraction. One of the problems has been the multi layers of responsibility, with the port operator, town hall, El Hacho macro community, and individual communities of owners, all being responsible for different areas. In frustration a number of local residents decided to take the bull by the horns and do something about the situation, which has led to a ‘Pride in Duquesa’ movement calling on volunteers, local businesses and the local authorities to do something about the situation. This initiative, that began as a thread on the Manilva Life forums, has seen a number of local residents, businesses and regular visitors setting up a clean-up brigade, with volunteers tidying up the flower beds, clearing litter and painting over the graffiti that has adorned some of the walls.

It would appear that these volunteers have proven to be the much needed catalyst, with many of the businesses in the Port entering into the spirit of the scheme. Meetings with the local authorities and Marinas Mediterraneo, who hold the concession to manage the marine activities and harbourside in the port, has also been fruitful in getting long overdue repairs carried out. Another result was the possibility of the restoration of the popular weekend craft market, which used to attract many visitors before it was closed down a few years ago. Besides the volunteers, special mention should go to Justin at Manilva Autos who has provided valuable support by way of tools and materials; Carolines Bar for keeping the troops topped up with water; and Chris and Beli at the Foreigners Department have also been keen to show support for the initiative. If you wish to help out, either with donation of materials, or with a couple of hours of your time, then contact Karen 699 880 646 or visit www.manilvalife.com/forums

Prohibition of fires in the countryside Estepona Town Hall has published an order from the Junta de Andalucia’s environment department prohibiting the lighting of fires (including barbecues) in the countryside until the 15th October. This is due to the high risk of fire which could result from negligence during the hot summer months. The order, which was published on the 21st May and came into force at the beginning of June applies a number of restrictions to activities in the countryside and forest environment, and prohibits: - The burning of natural

vegetation. - The burning of agricultural and forestry waste. - The lighting of fires for the preparation of food (this includes lay-bys and rest areas next to roads and camping areas). - The use of charcoal ovens, etc. - It is also prohibited to drive off road on dry river beds and flood plains, drovers paths, forest roads and paths. The following activities can be carried out with written authorisation from the Provincial Environment Department: - The use of barbecues and gas cookers in authorised tourist

accommodation. - The use of barbecues in rural restaurants. - Preparation of food in organised campsites and childrens camps. - The use of charcoal ovens, in areas where there are traditional activities occurring. Para más información y precios visiten www. anglowines.com Dozens of wine aficionados gathered at the Anglo Wines shop in Centro Comercial Sotovila IV, in Pueblo Nuevo, Sotogrande, last month for the launch of the Sumaridge Estate range of wines, which Anglo Wines are introducing to the Spanish market this month.

l to r: Bella Ostheider (Anglo Wines), Simon Turner-Bellingham (Sumaridge Owner), Richard Bell-Young (Anglo Wines), Gavin Paterson (Sumaridge Wine-maker & MD), Holly Turner-Bellingham (Sumaridge Owner).

Guests took the opportunity to taste a number of wines on offer from the Sumaridge vineyards in South Africa including their Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Merlot Rosé, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. On hand to provide information about the wines was head vintner Gavin Patterson, and it was clear that, despite modestly describing himself as a grape farmer, it was his enthusiasm and sympathetic approach to the vines’ relationship with their environment that led to the character and quality of the estate’s wines. The official choir of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Lyon (France) since 1993, Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc (The Little Singers of Saint Marc) was founded in 1986 by Nicolas Porte, who since then has acted as its musical director.

Not long ago, Kurds and other ethnic minorities were forbidden to sing in their own language or promote their culture in Turkey. The discrimination and persecution to which they were subjected, whose only aim was to do away with any difference in a multiethnic society, are now thankfully part of the past. Aynur makes the most of this new freedom by recovering some of those repressed traditions, becoming a contemporary troubadour of her people’s traditional music.

Greek contemporary music’s most international voice returns to Spain with her new album Mírame, produced by Javier Limón and including sounds inspired by flamenco, traditional Spanish copla –including a surprising Greek version of ‘Cárcel de oro’ by the masters León, Quintero and Quiroga– and Arabic folklore.

ZENET - 11 Jul 21:00h

Captivating and genuine, Toni Zenet is a malagueño from Pedregalejo (1967) and a crooner (as well as a musician, actor, poet and artist) with an incredible voice. Los mares de China is his first solo album and sounds just like a classic. It is a journey through Andalusian copla, Argentinean tango, Cuban son and New York jazz, with intimate club melodies and short distances that remind us of both Miguel Molina and Frank Sinatra.

Rogamar is the title of the new album by Cesária Évora (Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde, 1941). Infused with a message of strength, courage and bravery, the tenth album by “the barefoot diva” –she usually performs barefoot as a symbolic salute to the humble neighbourhood where she was born, which she evokes in her songs– invites us to placidly immerse ourselves in Portuguese Africa.

The character of Jerry Lee Lewis, “The killer”, (Ferriday, Louisiana, 1935) fits in perfectly with what one would expect from a rock’n’roll star: fun-loving, a womaniser, nonconformist, arrogant, and a show-off. He not only fits the stereotype, but he gives it a new dimension in each of his stage performances and savage piano-playing. He symbolises everything that the rock’n’roll explosion brought in the fifties, the musical basis for most of the music trends that would come later – for they say Jerry was rocking way before rock was invented.

It’s been a hectic time for Katy Setterfield since she won BBC1’s competition to find ‘The UK’s Ultimate Tribute Act’. ‘The One & Only’, hosted by Graham Norton, was a huge success at the beginning of 2008, attracting over 7 million viewers for each of its 7 weekly live broadcasts. Katy emerged triumphantly as a thoroughly convincing and accurate Dusty Springfield as she stole the final show with superb renditions of the soul diva’s best-loved hits, ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’, ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’ and ‘All I See Is You’ Katy’s prize was a 3-month contract to perform in the world famous ‘Legends In Concert’ at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas. Again, her Dusty wowed the masses and the production can’t wait to get Katy back on their show. But wait they must! Since returning to the UK last autumn, Katy has barely had time to draw breath between performances and recording a CD to accompany her first solo UK tour which, entitled simply ‘Katy in Concert as Dusty Springfield’, has been a huge success around the country selling out many of the 50 venues over 10 weeks. Katy is now coming to Cortijo La Vizcaronda, Manilva to perform at a Gala evening where much needed money will be raised for the Animal in Need charity in La Linea. Animal in Need currently have in excess of 400 dogs and more dogs are arriving all the time. New facilities are desperately needed and money raised during the evening will go to this very worthy cause.

Katy Setterfield is in Concert as Dusty Springfield at Cortijo La Vizcaronda on Saturday 15th August 2009. Tickets are priced at €50 and include Cava on arrival, 3 course meal with ½ a bottle of wine per person. Tickets are limited and early booking is recommended. For more information or to book tickets please telephone our hot line on 697 984 021.

British Consulate Open Day in Estepona

Cudeca More than 44.000€ raised at the Cudeca Walkathon 2009 On Sunday 24th May 1,050 friends and volunteers of all ages and nationalities, some together with their dogs, gathered to celebrate the 7th Cudeca Walkathon. The annual Walkathon aims to raise much needed funds to continue the valuable services provided at Cudeca’s Cancer Care Hospice, and this year’s event was a real success and a prime example of coexistence and solidarity. So far this year’s event has managed to raise over 44,300€ (funds accounted for up to now), which will help Cudeca continue to offer the cost-free “special kind of

Age Concern – Information on Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance (AA) and Carer’s Allowance (CA) This information has been issued by Age Concern following advice from the UK Government: ‘With the ‘economic crisis’ constantly featured in the media, many of us are thinking more about our own finances, including whether we are receiving all the help available to us. You may be aware that there are certain UK benefits you can continue to get in Spain, and others you cannot. Recently, the rules on receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance (AA) and Carer’s Allowance (CA) abroad changed. In October 2007 a European Court of Justice ruling reclassified these previously nonexportable disability benefits as exportable ‘sickness benefits’. However, only recently have the full eligibility criteria for receiving them in Spain been decided. But before considering these, it is useful to highlight who these benefits are for. DLA is a benefit for those under 65 to help cover costs that arise due to a longterm illness or disability. It is made up of a mobility and a care component. AA is similar economic help for those over 65, while CA is a benefit for those who look after a severely disabled person. All these benefits have a number of specific conditions for eligibility. The disability or caring criteria for

23

each benefit have not changed. It is also important to remember that the mobility component of DLA is not affected by the judgement and remains non-exportable. The new rules do state however, that you can receive DLA (the care component), AA or CA in Spain if: • You are a posted worker and continue to pay National Insurance to the UK, OR • You are in receipt of a UK State Pension, or a UK sickness or Bereavement Benefit, OR • You have made enough UK National Insurance contributions to be able to claim a UK sickness benefit, OR • You are a family member of someone who satisfies any of the above criteria And you must have spent 26 of the last 52 weeks in the UK before the date of your claim. If you feel you may be eligible for any of these benefits, contact the Pension, Disability and Carer’s Service Exportability Team. With the recent changes they are very busy, but be assured that if you have already contacted them, they will deal with your claim as quickly as possible. Their contact details, all the above information, and more, is available on the DirectGov website www.direct.

gov.uk. One last, but important, point to mention is that if you have been in Spain for many years, although you may be unable to claim UK DLA, AA or CA, you might be entitled to help through the Spanish system. The Spanish Government is currently introducing a new law (Ley de Dependencia) across the country to provide more help to those who are dependent on others and their carers. If you have been a legal resident here for 5 years, you may be entitled to a range of services including home help or economic help as a carer. Contact the social worker at your local town hall for more details of the services becoming available in your area.’ Lifeline For elderly people who require help or advice Age Concern operate a telephone service called Lifeline. This gives the individual a direct point of contact with the charity. The telephone number is 650163928. It should be noted that Age Concern is not an emergency service. There is also an email address where you can contact Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva. It is acesteponaymanilva@ ageconcern-espana.org and why not tune into our web site at www. acesteponaymanilva.org

Handbell Programme Lifts Spirits Monday 25 May, a lovely sunny morning, and The Handbell Group set out to entertain at Aspandem in San Pedro de Alcantara. On this occasion they set up in the central circular hallway, the audience of young people and staff coming from all directions. The audience space was soon filled; seats were occupied, room made for wheelchairs, whilst latecomers filled the passageways. The ringers certainly enjoyed themselves with such a receptive and excited audience, but the pièce de résistance was surely that simple tune Happy Birthday

played for two young girls, with an encore for a young lad, José who, with a little help, conducted his own birthday song. A perfect ending sealed by fixing a date for a Christmas programme. The Handbell Group, under the direction of Marianne Wicks – an honorary life member of The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain, is formed from members of Club Charity and Pleasure, El Paraiso, Estepona.

This is held each year on the evening of the 23rd of June and goes on into the early hours of the 24th (Dia de San Juan). It’s the old pagan midsummer celebration which has been ‘Christianified’ by tacking it on to a convenient Saint’s day (if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em sort of thing). There are a number of traditional ways of celebrating Saint John’s Night most of which involve a good bonfire. In many

municipalities the central celebration is the ‘Quema de los bigotes de San Juan’ - literally ‘burning of the moustaches’ where large papier mache figures, many of a satirical nature, are paraded through the town before being burnt on the beach. In Sabinillas a huge tableau is constructed on the beach a few days before the event. This work of art is based on a different theme every year, and it is almost a crime when, around midnight, the whole thing is set alight. It is also customary at this time to walk into the sea to wash away any bad luck. Another tradition is for the young men of the town to jump or dive over the bonfires once they have died down a bit, the higher the flames, the greater the challenge. The night is usually marked by firework displays, live music and dancing until the early hours of the morning. Sabinillas is by no means the only town hosting San Juan celebrations, Estepona holds a competition for the best ‘bigotes’, and Casares enjoys live music, bonfires and sardines on the beach at Marina de Casares, with other towns worth a visit are San Roque, Taraguilla and Torreguadiaro who all stage celebrations of one sort or another.

for financial assistance to pursue their venture. It is a fact that a significant amount of money has already been paid out. The majority of the beneficiaries have been women. This has been a thrust to encourage enterprising projects and employment in the area. Full medical assistance is available for common law partners. Families who have a working member with a Spanish social security number can include all family members for medical attention. The good news is that this also includes common law partners, working women and resident pensioners. This includes full medical coverage. Resident Pensioners and advantages There are many benefits available for resident pensioners including grants for home improvements, nursing care for housebound patients and further assistance so numerous to mention in this column. Many of these services are obtained by applying for the tarjeta 65.

It needs to be known that it is illegal for banks to charge a commission on the transfer of state pensions. Some banks receiving these funds can also offer you free banking. Mortgages and insurances associated to them. Contrary to beliefs it is not necessary to take out a life insurance with your mortgage. Home and contents insurances can be obtained from companies other than bank who facilitate your mortgage. Now is a good time to negotiate with your bank. If you are finding it difficult to meet your mortgage payments, have you made the effort to talk to your bank and not been successful. Take into account that you may need information on how to enter into discussion with them. In extreme cases there may be a good case to ask for suspension de pagos.

Costa Advice Bureau Gibraltar workers who are Spanish residents may claim unemployment benefits in Spain. For all the unfortunate Expat workers whom, due to the present crises affecting Europe and most of the globe in general, have recently had the misfortune to find that they too were now unemployed or made redundant. Having sought advice, this group has been fortunate enough to obtain unemployment benefits here in Spain. To meet this criterion they have had to have been in employment in Gibraltar for at least two years. This rule also applies to those workers who had been fortunate enough to have received redundancy payments. European Union grants, Fact or fiction? The regulations allow the claimant to ask police for assistance if the business refuses to supply a form or to accept one once it has filled in. Investors, Renters and Bankers? what will happen to their assets back in their home countries if the bank refuses to accept the keys in exchange of the cancellation of the mortgage. While it used to be uncommon for Spanish banks to pursue debts abroad, in the wake of this new grim economical environment we are in, they are now forced to do it due to the alarming surge in bad debt.

I find it unbelievable that one year next month, I took over Coast to Coast properties with my business partner and friend Ken Williams. When we took the business on, little did we know how deep the Credit Crunch/Recession would bite and how drastically it would affect peoples lives. Over the past year we have seen interest rates all over the world fall. Over the same period of time particularly in Spain, mortgage payments on loans increased even though the European Central Bank (ECB) reduced the base rate 8 times between July 2008 and May this year. The reason for this is most mortgage loans in Spain are reviewed on an annual basis unlike the UK where now, most mortgage interest rates are calculated on a daily or monthly basis and feel the benefit almost immediately. The delay in the rate reduction meant that in some cases, mortgage payments actually increased because of higher interest rates in the previous year. In the meantime rents have been driven down by the poor Euro/Pound exchange rate. A large proportion of renters in the locality either work in Gibraltar or receive a UK Pension and get paid in Sterling, over the past few months this has amounted to a 30% reduction in the value of the pound in their pocket. Needless to say we have a number of owners who had an increasing debt (the mortgage payments) and a reducing yield (rental income). Their livelihood already threatened because of the worldwide recession and the fall in the value of the pound resulted in owners believing they could hand their keys back to the banks without any further liability. Although some Spanish banks have accepted this in the past (depending on each particular case and providing the borrower is not in negative equity) most no longer will. In many cases, on doing this, many banks will be losing money as they realise your property is not worth in a public auction the value of the outstanding mortgage loan. Foreign home owners are concerned with

Now the Good News Over the past few months we have seen an increase in sales enquiries albeit the punters in question are looking for bargain or distressed properties. The pound is also on the up and even the local banks seem a little more sympathetic towards their customer’s current financial dilemma. I was speaking with a local branch manager last week regarding a property we had rented out. The owner of the property has filed for bankruptcy back in the UK and doesn’t have the income to finance the mortgage, even though the bank rearranged the terms of his mortgage contract reducing the current rate of interest and changing it to an interest only loan for a period of two years. The bank manager has offered the property on the open market for the outstanding debt, i.e. a subrogation mortgage. The bank are willing to pay for all the cost incurred in the change of the title of the loan and the property and are more concerned about the ability to pay rather than proof of income e.g. renters with a good track record would be considered without proof of income. So overall, things are looking up the only problem at the moment is that supply certainly outweighs demand at this time and I can envisage prices certainly on two bed two bath apartments falling to pre 2002 levels. Good news for buyers’ bad news for sellers. Fancy A Chat?

Unions threaten hotel workers strike in parts of Andalucía this summer As if the hotel industry didn’t have enough to worry about this year, it would appear that they face the threat of strike action by members of two major unions, who say that employers have reneged on pay increases agreed four years ago.

Some half a million workers are covered by the agreements, both in the hotel industry and general commerce, and they have promised to take industrial action if this situation is not resolved.

ADANA’s Sanctuary project, well underway

After 20 years of caring for abandoned animals in Estepona and surrounding areas, ADANA is now seeing its most ambitious project rise from the ground. The construction work for a new dogs and cats’ sanctuary commenced last summer and its first phase is well underway: the kennel block is finished and the main building will be very soon. The next step is to fix all the outside drainage, connect it to a septic tank and make the electricity supply permanent. The charity trusts that this summer’s fundraising efforts will help ADANA see the kennel active in the near future. “We are still 20,000€ away from being able to operate as a functioning kennel, and a further 40,000 € from completing the project,” ADANA’s President Janet Greenstreet explains. “As we depend on donations, the works can be done only at certain speed, but having the building up is certainly very encouraging.” ADANA is planning to organise Open Days at the Sanctuary during the summer months, with the objective of explaining the

project to all animal lovers in Estepona and Costa del Sol, showing them the work and getting more financial support to finalise the construction work. At the moment, ADANA’s rescued animals live in the municipal kennels belonging to Estepona’s Council. This building has been recently refurbished but its capacity is very limited. “All animal lovers will agree that this project is a great solution to the problem of abandoned dogs and cats in Spain, which unfortunately shows larger figures each year and places Andalucía on the top of the list,” says Janet. ADANA appeals to the generosity of Estepona and Costa del Sol residents. Donations, large or small, are at this point the only way to continue with the project, and can be done in many ways. All people interested in contributing with ADANA’s Sanctuary project can contact the association on 952 797 405, send an email to info@adana.es or get more information on their website www.adana.es.

Welcome to Tight Lines Welcome to Medsports the angling centre in Sabinillas. This month has been a super month for our customers, and all of your photographs and angling stories have been received with great interest. I find it particularly exciting and I am somewhat envious at some of your catches. For me it’s a case of born to fish but forced to work. That said I have managed to steal some free time to fish the Rio Guadiaro, and from the shore at Sotogrande and Aldea Beach. Although I am unable to match our star anglers this month, I have caught sea bass, weaver fish and squid. Star anglers this month are Steve Wilsdon and Stan Curry. Fresh Water The Rio Guadiaro has been very popular this month, and Steve Wilsdon has had a few very successful days catching barble

and carp. Steve states that his success was down to good ground baits mixed with strawberry additive, and sweet corn. Steve soaked some of his sweet corn with red food die overnight and fished with both the normal sweet

corn and the red. Another popular bait this month has been boiled hemp and blood halibut hook pellets. Pictured here is Stan with his whopper.

Union Estepona Club de Futbol have gained promotion to Liga Segunda B just a year after rising to national level football following an absence of 14 years. After an impressive season which saw them finish top of Group IX of the Tercera Liga with 87 points, they entered the promotion play offs against the Murcian team Caravaca 2010. Having lost the first leg 3 - 2 those two away goals were to prove invaluable when they faced Caravaca at home for the second leg. Over 4,000 fans packed the Francisco Muñoz Pérez stadium to cheer on the local side, and were soon rewarded with a goal by Cuevas in the 3rd minute, a lead which they held until just before half time when Rodríguez equalised for Caravaca. The second half began well and Estepona always looked dangerous on the break, and regained the lead when Cuevas scored his second in the 51st minute. Estepona were well in charge of

the game until Romero was sent of in the 55th minute for a second bookable offence. Caravaca were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage, and Estepona always looked dangerous on the break, and they could have gone 3 - 1 up when Caravaca conceded a penalty which, fortunately for them, their keeper pushed past the post. At the final whistle the scoreline of 4 - 4 on aggregate meant Estepona won on the away goals rule and thus will take their place in Liga 2B next season.
