Editor

Hello readers, welcome to the March issue of The Resident. We’ve certainly been through an extraordinary winter weather wise, and it is with fingers and toes crossed that I think we are finally over it. It’s at times like this, what with the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and Turkey; devastating hailstorms in Australia; and freezing conditions in North America and northern Europe along with the phenomenal amount of rain here in the South of Spain, that you almost can’t help feeling that the earth is trying to shrug us off, like some irritating tick on the back of an elephant! It also helps to remind us that the processes of weathering and erosion that have shaped the land over millions of years are not dormant but continually affecting the landscape. I promise not to mention the weather again, at least not for a few months, instead let’s look forward to the coming month. The main event this month is of course Easter’s Semana Santa celebrations. Villages, towns and cities across the region will be preparing for the processions celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus. Ranging from small intimate acts of devotion to huge, lavish processions, you don’t have to be religious to be moved by these celebrations. In this issue we have published information, where available, about some of the processions in the area, but as always I would like to stress that timings and routes are sometimes to last minute changes so I would recommend you visit our website www.theresident.es for the latest information. Golf fans will also be getting excited now, not only for the fact that most of the courses are now playable again, but also because later this month the Parador Málaga Golf club will be hosting the Andalucia Open from the 25th to 28th March. As a special treat for golf fans entrance on the first two days, 25th and 26th March is free With the Andalucia Masters and the Volvo World Match Play Championships to be held at Valderrama and Finca Cortesin respectively, later in the year, and the announcement of the Jason Floyd International Junior Golf Academy at Sotogrande later this year, the Costa del Sol can justify its claim as the number golfing destination in Europe, if not the world. Finally, here at The Resident, in acknowledgement of the difficult economic climate in which our clients are having to operate, we have reviewed our advertising rates and in many cases made substantial cuts in the cost of advertising in the paper. We have also put together a number of packages which combine adverts in the newspaper along with a presence on our websites. For more information contact 952 936 198 or visit www.theresident.es for more details. That’s all for this month folks! Editor

Sotogrande Women Lunch Meeting, Thursday 25th March, San Roque Golf and Country Club, 12 noon for 1 pm with Paul Yaffé - Master photographer Sotogrande Women is a new and exciting women’s club based in Sotogrande, who meet once a month for lunch and to listen to speakers on all issues of interest to women, covering a host of subjects: fashion, beauty, alternative therapy, cosmetic surgery, you name it, the list is endless. Sotogrande is a beautiful place to live, but it can get pretty quiet out of the busy summer months. Many of the residents now live there all year round. The Club’s mission is to make sure that it’s members have an enjoyable and

interesting time and are able to network and make new friends. The club’s March speaker is the internationally acclaimed Master Photographer, Paul Yaffé, who will demonstrate “How to look good in front of the Camera” ... (Who says image isn’t everything!) The Master Photographers Association named Paul Yaffé as ‘The 20th Century Great’. In their article they comment, “Through his leadership and example, Yaffé inspires the production of great and artistic images of people. His standing in the UK and the rest of Europe is sky high …Yaffé is the standard by which other photographers are measured.”

Making Golf Group, Jason Floyd and the International School of Sotogrande recently launched a new golf project, Floyd International Junior Golf Academy at Sotogrande “, which is the first golf academy in Europe to provide a fully integrated academic, golfing and accommodation package for children aged between 12 and 18 which will run the full school year beginning September 2010. The Jason Floyd Junior Academy at Sotogrande International was created to fill a growing need in the world of golf: offering high quality training for future champions through golf professionals, psychologists, nutritionists, biomechanical and physical trainers all with extensive experience. Golf as a sport, is making significant technological and professional developments in all aspects. It is a growing and thriving industry which has become more demanding and increasingly requires specialized services. The success in the world of golf is not just luck, it is the combination of proper training and the right attitude. The Jason Floyd International Junior Golf Academy at Sotogrande aims to provide an exceptional level of golf instruction and to develop in students the right attitude to learning, to people, and to their personal development.

the prestigious status of Advanced PGA Professional. Jason Floyd was also a protégé of David Leadbetter and has had the privilege of observing and assisting David when working with some of the world’s top players, including, Ernie Els, Nick Price, Justin Rose, Greg Norman, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Jason subscribes to the philosophy that in order to realise full playing potential an all encompassing approach to the development of an individual is essential. Such an approach includes such factors as: the efficiency of the swing mechanics; the physical conditioning of the player and the customising of equipment to suit the individual player. Jason has a strong association with Titleist and is a “Titleist Advisory Staff Instructor”. Jason has also graduated as a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness Instructor. Currently Jason is involved in the setting up and operation of three new golf academies in Spain. The aim of these academies is to provide an exceptional and unique blend of top quality golf instruction that will appeal to students all over the world. Two of the academies will be situated in Madrid, the third, a junior academy and the first of its kind in Europe, will be at Sotogrande.

Jason Floyd Born in England, Jason Floyd has coached players to victories on the European Tour, the European Challenge Tour and the Asian Tour. Having also worked with Ryder Cup Players and coached on the US PGA Tour Jason’s experience is very extensive. Ewen Murray, leading Sky Sports commentator and former European Tour Player said; “I have no hesitation in saying Jason is one of the most intelligent young coaches in golf today”. In 2008, in recognition of his work, the PGA of Great Britain awarded Jason

The JFGA Performance Programme The JFGA Performance Programme has been designed to ensure that each student receives a complete, exciting and enjoyable golfing education. Students are aged between 12 and 18. A key requirement is that the students have a strong desire to improve their game so as to maximise their golfing ability and ultimately achieve success. JFGA is confident that many of their students will go on to have successful careers in the world of professional golf.

Paul has also devised and developed the term ‘‘Fusion Art’’. Fusion Art portraits (a registered trademark) consist of a number of images and design features, separately captured on camera, which are then digitally enhanced, before being artistically and electronically layered and ‘fused’ together. But great images of people are not just about technique. They are also about psychology and an understanding of what we like and don’t like about ourselves. Also knowing how the body works from

an anatomical perspective enables the inspired photographer to make people look great. Paul will show lots of examples and share his secrets on how we can all look good in front of a camera ... you won’t be shying away from any camera after learning how to present yourself in front of a lens in future!

Completion in sight for Sabinillas sports centre After years of wrangling, the Sabinillas sports centre took a huge step to finally becoming a reality this week, when an agreement was officially announced during a presentation today in Manilva’s Council Chambers.

Hall with multisport surface for basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, indoor football, etc. and seating for 266 spectators. There will also be a multipurpose room for sports such as judo, karate, aerobics, etc.

Construction of the project began in December, 2005 after a stone laying ceremony by the then mayor, Salvador Zotano, but the project ran into financial difficulty later in 2006 and has been mothballed ever since. In recent months negotiations between the Town Hall and the contractors, a consortium UTE Vera y Gea, has resulted in today’s announcement that works are to recommence and are scheduled to be completed early next year.

The centre will also have underground parking for 283 vehicles which will go along way to alleviate the parking problem in Sabinillas, particularly in the summer. The project has a budget of more than 9 million euros which will be 100% funded from municipal coffers.

The Sports Centre plans have undergone some adjustments from the original scheme, due to the new Sabinillas Health Centre occupying part of the original plot, chief amongst these would appear to be the loss of the tennis courts in the original project, but other than that the facilities will include: 3 Paddle Tennis Courts; Indoor Squash Court; Indoor Swimming Pool; 7-a-side football pitch with artificial turf and a 320 seat grandstand; Sports

The presentation was presided over by the Mayoress of Manilva, Antonia Muñoz, along with her deputy, Salvador Zotano, and José Manuel Osuna, representing the contractor. Also attending was Councillor for Sports and Youth, Diego Urieta and the Mancomunidad’s architect Elena Gallego, along with numerous councillors and other council officials.

Almost business as usual at Armstrongs Despite all that the elements, both meteorological and criminal, can throw at them, Rob and Diane from Armstrongs Restaurant and Lounge refuse to be beaten. The recent floods have seriously damaged the Rio Manilva Road, with one lane disappearing into the river by the fairground, and a landslide blocking the road by the Roman Oasis. A diversion now takes traffic through the fairground, but this has meant that on Sundays, whilst the market is being held, that the road is effectively cut. As a result of this, until the road has been repaired Armstrongs will be starting their Sunday lunches a little later, opening at 3 pm when the market has

closed, and traffic is once again permitted through the recinto ferial. Another casuality of the landslide was their telephone landline, but telefonica have diverted their number through to a mobile, but if you do have problems getting through on 952 892 690 then call their mobile direct on 664 442 629. For the latest information regarding the road situation don’t hesitate to give them a call. Other than that it is business as usual with the opening hours for the rest of the week unchanged, including their popular Saturday evening cabaret dinners a full programme of which you can find in the What’s On section of The Resident, pages 18-20.

SEMANA SANTA - EASTER PROCESSIONS San Roque San Roque’s Easter processions are some of the most important in the area and have been declared an ‘Event of Tourist Interest’ by the Junta de Andalucia. Many of the statues paraded around the streets of San Roque during Easter Week date back to the 16th century and the residents of San Roque brought them with them when they left Gibraltar and established their new town around the Shrine of San Roque after their hometown was occupied by the Anglo-Dutch forces during the War of the Spanish Succession. 5,000 Spanish Gibraltarians rejected the British offer to remain in the city, and left to found the new town overlooking their former home. There are several processions, but the highlight is the Good Friday procession which features floats with fourteen different images representing the Stations of the Cross, and is the only ‘Magna’ procession held annually in the whole of Andalucia. Donación de comida para ADANA

The Royal British Legion newsletter

Join our Poppy Team! The Royal British Legion has different types of volunteers – collectively known as ‘Poppy People’ – who volunteer in a variety of roles. It is the much valued caseworkers and visitors who help to deliver the Poppy Support Service, working tirelessly to provide information advice and support to the beneficiaries. What does a ‘caseworker’ do? Caseworkers visit people in their home and identify and assess the need for assistance and eligibility for help. OCaseworkers make a huge difference in the local ex-pat community to the lives of the beneficiaries. Hospital and housebound visitors The Hospital & Housebound Visitors Scheme is one of the oldest Legion schemes and truly captures the essence of Legion welfare work. Loneliness, particularly following bereavement, is a terrible thing – often further compounded when you find yourself living in foreign lands, facing language barriers and the many hurdles and challenges of living abroad. The visitors help towards combating loneliness and isolation by offering the hand of friendship and companionship to those ex- servicemen and women who are either housebound or in hospital. For the first time in Spain, there will be visitor training courses in May – keep an eye out for further information soon If you are interested in becoming a ‘Poppy Person’ the RBL would love to hear from you. Please contact Donna Wilson on: 952 352 300 or dmwilson@britishlegion.org.uk

Adana food aid In the summer of 2009 an English teacher, staying with lifelong friends in Estepona, paid a visit to the Adana kennels. On returning home she decided to write a book about the Estepona community, who had made her so welcome, and paying particular reference to Adana in the hope of raising funds and awareness. Returning to her home in Suffolk Helene approached Edward Baker (the firm that is now Nestlé Purina), who have an office in Sudbury, for help. Thinking that they might donate a few doggie treats for Christmas she was delighted

to be told that 2 pallets of dog food – top quality Purina brands – would be shipped to Barcelona free of charge for Adana! The food has now arrived and is being enjoyed by the 160 dogs at the kennels. Helene and ADANA hope that this generosity may be the first of many other such gestures from companies and individuals who recognize the difficulties faced by animal welfare organizations during the current financial crisis.

Versión Original en Inglés subtitulada en Español Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20-million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Intrigued by Jamal’s story, the jaded police inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the inspector and 60 million viewers are about to find out. In English with Spanish subtitles

8 Abril/April 20:30h. LOL (2008) Dir: Lisa Azuelos. Versión Original en Francés subtitulada en Español The story focuses on Lola aka “Lol” who is dealing with school, love, friendship and family issues. Her mother, played by Sophie Marceau, is having an affair with her ex-husband and is torn between her responsibilities as a mother and her irresponsible behavior as an adult. As for Lol, she breaks up with her boyfriend who told her he had sex with another girl over the summer and starts to fall for his best friend. In a world where I-pods, cell phones & MSN have taken so much importance, communication is often difficult between teens and their overwhelmed parents. In French with Spanish subtitles

15 Abril/April 20:30h. Lala, a teenager from the most exclusive suburban neighborhood in Argentina is in love with the Guayi, the 20-year-old Payaguayan maid working at her place. They dream of living together in Paraguay, at the shores of lake Ypoá. Robbing every purse and wallet in the house to fulfill their dream, hiding the money in a shoe box. But when the box is full, it bursts, fueled by desire, jealousy and rage. This is the starting point that spurs the escape through the highway that connects the North of Buenos Aires with Paraguay. While Lala waits to be reunited with her lover in Ypoá by reconstructing her past (the mystery surrounding her pregnancy and the legend of a fish child who guides the drowned to the bottom of the lake), the Guayi is detained in a minors institute in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. She turns out to be hiding a crime from long ago. In Spanish

Face to face the mummy portraits of Roman Egypt Sometimes beautiful and painstakingly painted, sometimes dashed off as caricatures, these moving funerary portraits have been proved by modern technology to be faithful representations of the way the living person would have looked during the Roman occupation in the final days of Ancient Egypt. Painted on wooden boards attached to their mummies, these ‘ancient faces’ have retained their vibrant colours and fine detail thanks to the dry climate of Fayum, the region where they were found. Dr Paul Roberts is their curator at the British Museum. Go along at 11.00 am on Tuesday 20th April to the San Roque Golf and Country Club (A7, Km.127) to hear Dr. Roberts tell about these extraordinary mummy portraits of Roman Egypt. Visitors are welcome and entry is €12. There is a chance to socialise with members and visitors at the after-lecture drinks reception and an opportunity to win a book on the lecture subject in the raffle. March was an extremely busy month for the society with trips to Cadiz and Gibraltar where Chairman Paul Moody presented the Governor of Gibraltar, Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns, with a copy of the NADFAS history. An extra special lecture day saw the inaugural prize-giving for the Young Arts Film Project in conjunction with Sotogrande International School. NADFAS National Vice-Chairman Nigel Yallop flew out especially to attend and those presentwere honoured to have his presence along with that of actor Gerald

Información Information Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva Volunteers Training Age Concern held a very successful volunteers training session at the Centro Cultural Padre Manuel, Estepona on the 9th March. Estepona Council kindly allowed the charity to hold the event free of charge. The training consisted of role playing designed to enhance listening skills leading on to a practice session on assessing people’s needs. Each was followed by a feedback session where people were able to gain experience from each other and from the course tutors – Eileen Dry, President of Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, and Janet Allwood, treasurer of the Branch. Salvador Tavares, Executive Committee Member, gave a short explanation on the ley de dependencia and answered many questions. These training sessions not only give the new volunteers a sound start in working for Age Concern with older people in the community, but also give all volunteers the chance to meet and discuss problems they come across in carrying out their work.

We are all to aware of the reality that there has been a lot of rain these past few months. This will mean that there should be lots of wildflowers blooming this Spring, unfortunately they are not the only benefactors of the abundant water. This will be a record year for lots of other organisms in the countryside, many of them less desirable like mosquitoes to name but one. This is a warning about external parasites including of course fleas, ticks, and sand flies, as well as the internal parasites that may accompany them. There will also be an increase in the populations of leeches around lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. Its

also time to think once again about the Procession Caterpillar and the danger to us and our animals it represents. Animal owners and carers should be aware of this reality and institute the necessary control and preventative measures best suited to their particular pets and their environment. If you have any doubts or questions as to how best to proceed you should consult your Veterinarian for guidance in your particular case. Ronald Rosenfeld D.V.M. Sabinillas 952 891 387

‘HOLIDAYS GALORE’ an article for ‘The Resident’ by Per R Dewar. On January 5 this year (the day before the ‘Three Kings’ public holiday), in Sabinillas Mercadona, a reader noticed a sign which read “Closed tomorrow for Bank Holiday”. Jokingly he told the cashier that the term ‘Bank Holiday’ was incorrect and Mercadona should have advised its English-speaking customers that the next day was a ‘Fiesta Nacionale’. Surprisingly the girl didn’t shrug and come up with the standard, “Coche in parking?” Instead she called across to her colleague. The next thing the guiri’s comment was being batted back and forth like a tennis ball across the check-outs in the way these girls exchange family dramas. When the commotion brought a supervisor our reader made a quick ‘exit left’, rather than try and explain his little joke in his execrable Castilliano. To this writer the term ‘Bank Holiday’, which dates back to 1871, is an awful anachronism. Local newspaper subeditors are often guilty of using it when reporting Festivos and Fiestas Nacionales. Another quaint Anglicism they use is ‘MOT’. Perhaps they think the ‘Albert Square’ faction among their readers would be confused by the correct, ‘ITV’ (Inspeccion Technica de Vehiculos). Discussion of holidays takes us willynilly to Gibraltar and its devotion (barring

language) to Britain. The Colony enjoys eleven public holidays per year – eight English and three others, for example, ‘Commonwealth Day’. Picture then this tongue-in-cheek scenario: Gibraltar has joined (without losing its British heritage) the Campo de Gibraltar to form the ‘9th Province of Andalucia’; its eleven public holidays have been linked with the Campo’s umpteen Festivos and Fiestas Nacionales. Suppose further that in any given year, Spain’s ‘Dia de la Constitucion’ (December 6) falls on a Tuesday; the new Provincial Authority could then dream up an excuse for a holiday on December 7 – an English or Spanish footballer’s birthday perhaps. Given that December 8 is a religious Fiesta Nacionale... The whole region would enjoy holidays galore! But the lingua franca of Gibraltar is llanito, that philological freak that is neither English nor Spanish, so the new Provincial Authority decrees that all the ‘holidays galore’ will have Spanish names. ‘Commonwealth Day’ becomes ‘Manocomunidad Day’, but rather than explain for example the quaint English ‘Boxing Day’ in Spanish – ‘Dia de las Propinas Suplicantes’ they stick with ‘San Sebastian’! The foregoing is all very tongue-in-cheek... of course.

Línea Directa continues to grow According to data compiled at the end of the fiscal year, Línea Directa Aseguradora, a market leader in direct motor and home insurance in Spain, was the only company in the top 19 motor insurers to show a positive growth in 2009. In a very complex economic situation where the insurance sector has fallen by some 5.4%, Línea Directa has recorded a turnover of more than €661 million, which is a 2% increase on the previous fiscal year. The company has also increased its number of new policies by nearly half a million and now boasts more than 1.7 million customers – 63,000 of whom are expatriates. In fact, Línea Directa closed the year 2009 with the best sales figures in the history of the company. Not only did it see some 480,000 policies sold in Spain, but its Motor Insurance increased its turnover by 1% and its Home Insurance by 150%. This shows a huge growth in the potential of the company as a whole. Due to the success of the business model that Línea Directa has implemented and followed since the launch of the company, this very-high ranking insurer has shown that it is still continuing to maintain its excellent record and quality of service. The direct insurance model that it employs is exempt of intermediaries, which is what makes it possible for Línea Directa to offer extremely competitive prices. In addition, it reaches the best customer satisfaction rates, which is a result of its high levels of quality in all its products and services. It is as a result of all of these factors that

Línea Directa has sustained its position as the market leader in direct insurance and – after only 15 years in the sector – is already ranked fifth among motor insurance companies in Spain. A service entirely in English and German Línea Directa’s International Department allows the company to offer all of its services in both English and German to foreign policy holders residing in Spain. As a result, customers can take out a policy, make any type of enquiry, present a claim, request and receive documentation and enjoy 24-hour assistance in either language, during one single call. What’s more, it also offers policy holders an advisory service when dealing with repair garages. About Línea Directa Aseguradora Línea Directa Aseguradora, 100% owned by Bankinter, is currently the fifth largest motor insurance company in Spain, specialising in direct car, motorbike, company fleet and home insurance.

4 The Pianist, El Pianista. mitología de mariposa guerrera.

British Consulate Pension, Benefit and Healthcare Team Pension, benefit or healthcare - Don’t know where to turn? The first step in making sure any application process runs as smoothly as possible is to apply to the correct authority in the correct country. If you have worked in both the UK and Spain, or in another EEA country, where should you apply for your pension or benefit? If you are resident in Spain and have ever worked here, you should apply through Spanish social security – the INSS – even if the majority of your working life was spent in the UK. However, if you are living here but have never worked in Spain, you can apply directly to the authorities in the last country you worked. If this is the UK, contact the International Pension Centre. And no matter where you apply, always remember to include as much information as possible on where and when you worked on the application form. DID YOU KNOW that you do not have to claim your UK State Pension straight away once you reach retirement age? And did you know that should you decide to defer your pension, you could be entitled to extra state-pension or a lump sum payment? If you put off claiming your UK State Pension for at least 5 weeks,

when you do start receiving it, you will receive a higher monthly rate. If however, you put off claiming your pension for a year or more, you could choose to receive a lump sum payment of the money you would have received, plus interest. However, deferring a pension is not necessarily the right decision for everybody and you may want to seek independent advice before doing so. For further information, see www.direct.gov.uk. Bereavement While it may not be the first thing on your mind, it is important to remember that in the event of the death of a spouse or civil partner, you may be entitled to some form of financial benefit. In this edition we cover the main benefits available from the UK if you or your late spouse were under State Pension Age when they died. Next month we’ll provide information for pensioners and for those whose partner worked in Spain. If your late spouse or civil partner last worked and paid National Insurance Contributions in the UK and you, or they, were under State Pension Age when they died, you may be eligible for: - A Bereavement Payment, a lump-sum of £2000, and either

- Bereavement Allowance, a regular payment for up to 52 weeks from the date of death, OR - Widowed Parent’s Allowance, a similar payment for those with dependant children It is important to apply as soon as possible – customers only have 3 months from the date of death to apply for the allowance payments, and 12 months to apply for the Bereavement Payment. If you are resident in Spain, contact the International Pension Centre on 0044 191 218 7777 for a claim form. Legislation Letter If you are applying for healthcare on the grounds of a low income (‘sin recursos’) or applying to join a regional autonomous healthcare scheme, you may be asked to provide a letter from your country of origin which confirms that they do not cover your healthcare whilst you are resident in Spain. This letter is also known as a ‘Newcastle letter’ because you can get it from…you guessed it…Newcastle! The official name for this document is a ‘legislation letter’ and it is available in Spanish. You can request it from the Overseas Healthcare Team by calling 0044 191 218 1999.

British Consulate/Age Concern España Partnership Project (BC/ACPP) Dealing with the death of a loved one The death of a loved one is one of the most traumatic experiences we will have to deal with in life: knowing what to do in the event will not ease the distress and pain but will help everyone concerned to organize the arrangements correctly. As the procedures in case of death in Spain differ from those in the UK it is important to know what to do. For more information see the “Information & Advice” section at www.acespana. org (Infosheet 4 “What to do in case of death”). The Foreign and Commonwealth Office also provides further information on the main Consulate website: http://ukinspain.fco.gov.uk Bereavement support It is said that grief represents the midway phase between loss and some ultimate resolution. There are strong feelings to be dealt with and where mourning

does not happen, these feelings can intrude and manifest themselves in negative ways as time passes. At Age Concern España, we work closely with other organizations such as the Samaritans 902 88 35 35 (8p.m. until midnight everyday) whose trained volunteers are ready and willing to listen and support you. If you require further information or advice about anything included in this article please contact Sarah Rogers at CCM@ageconcernespaña.org. You can find out more about Samaritans at www. costablancasamaritans.com Age Concern España We offer practical advice and support to many individuals who have suffered bereavement. We offer this both at a local level through our 5 Age Concern España organizations located in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Torrevieja & Estepona; and through the National Casework

Service. The National Casework Service has over 70 volunteer caseworkers located throughout Spain who are trained and experienced in supporting people through bereavement. We can help guide you through and explain the various steps required such as notifying the authorities, registering the death and arranging the funeral. Planning ahead will mean that when the day comes that you have to make funeral arrangements for a loved one or someone has to make arrangements for you, a little of the emotional stress will be alleviated. The financial burden may also be eased by making preparations such as funeral plans, wills and preparing written instructions of your wishes for your funeral arrangements and leaving them with next of kin or with the funeral company.

Expats suffering due to the weak pound

$ € Brits abroad are struggling as a result of the weakening pound, a global survey from leading foreign exchange provider, Moneycorp, reveals. The survey uncovered that job security, the declining value of overseas property prices and the weakening pound were top of the list of worries for Brits living in Europe. David Kerns, Head of Personal Clients at Moneycorp, comments: “In light of recent economic conditions, Brits living abroad should take steps to obtain a clear overview of where their financial risks lie. If relying on income from the UK, they should consult a currency specialist to understand how to guard their finances against adverse rate movements. Of course, if British expats are going back to the UK, they should be wary of the effects that the weak pound will have on them and should seek guidance from a currency expert to make the most of the money they take back to the UK.” A foreign exchange specialist like Moneycorp can help you get the best exchange rates when transferring funds overseas and ensure you make the most of your money. If you are thinking of repatriating your funds back to the UK, whether you own a holiday home, investment property or other assets in Spain you can benefit from favourable foreign exchange rates offered by Moneycorp. Plus, Moneycorp have negotiated special repatriation services with local banks to help you get more pounds for your euros when sending funds back

to the UK. The survey also revealed that the weak pound has hit pensioners hard and that one in five (20%) expats claim a sterling pension. Over a quarter of Brits living in Spain (28%) and over a third of British expats in Germany (33%) rely on this as a core source of income. Yet, our research reveals that nearly a quarter (22%) do not monitor the currency markets to avoid losing money when making overseas payments. David Kerns, Head of Personal Clients at Moneycorp, continues: “Our research findings are not surprising, as a high number of Brits living overseas rely on their pension as a key source of income, as well as sterling income from house lettings in the UK and their savings. Given the current weakness of sterling, currency specialists can offer important savings on transfers to and from the UK. Consolidating payments into larger lump sums can help them avoid transfer fees. Alternatively, for people with pensions or other regular income from the UK, a Regular Payment Plan will also allow Brits living abroad to plan ahead and lock into favourable rates – to make sure they get the most out of their hard-earned cash.” For more information on how Moneycorp can help get you more currency than from your bank contact Michael Campbell in the Costa del Sol office on +34 951 319 700 or email michael. campbell@moneycorp.com Always quote The Resident.

Cudeca’s forthcoming events

by Myra Azzopardi. Is a British will valid in Spain? There is still a consensus amongst the European community that drawing up a British or Irish will is sufficient for you assets in Spain. It is both legal and within your rights to do this. The problems occur when the executer of the will has to go to the expensive and lengthy process of sending the will to probate, engage a lawyer in the country of origin instead of simply adhering to your wishes and making arrangements for the property or and assets to be passed down to your inheritors. Make a will in each country where you hold assets - this includes Gibraltar. If you do this correctly it is a simple and inexpensive exercise. Remember as a European subject you have the advantage over your Spanish counterpart where the law dictates who must inherit. As a foreign resident you may bequeath your assets to whomever you wish. It is fair to point out that a sibling or anyone else who feels they have an entitlement as a recipient does have the right to contest the Spanish will. Spanish driving licence Non Spanish residents are reluctant to change the European driving licence for the Spanish Permiso de Conducir. This is an uncomplicated and economical process that will give you peace of mind and a sense of being a full member of the community. The wallet sized card

has other advantages, such as replacing the cumbersome new resident document accompanied by your passport as an accepted proof of identity. The Spanish driving permit can be used as a means of identification which includes payments made with credit cards and in any bank. If you are going on a long journey or crossing borders it is imperative that you have in your possession your full identification. Wild boar. There are often cases of wild boar bothering inhabitants in country areas. Though their name implies that they are undomesticated, these animals can be owned by a proprietor of a Coto (game reserve). The Department of the Environment at your town hall, will give you a number of a specialist firm who will deal with the problem. There is a cost for this service. This popular and tasty meat is often served up in country restaurants. Do not consider hunting them to put in the freezer. If they do not belong to a reserve, they are not tested and these wild varieties eat everything and anything including rats. These species often carry dangerous diseases.
