Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Vice Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Amreen Patel Pardeep Chaggar Jag Singh Gareth Marshall-Jones David Wilson Mariam Mayet You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website. Dear Parents and Carers, Year 7-10 students are in the middle of spring term assessments and teachers are busy marking and getting ready to feed back to students and share next steps. The results of the Year 7 and 10 assessments will be fed back to parents/carers at the Year 10 Progress meeting on Thursday 19th April and the Year 7 Progress meeting on Monday 30th April. Reports for all students in Years 7-10 will be issued after the Easter holiday. Finally, on Tuesday, we are holding our exam meeting for parents of Year 11 and Year 13 students. It is vital that parents attend the meeting with their child. We will be explaining key exam regulations, going through the exam timetable and giving some advice about the best way for students to maximise their outcomes during the run-up to the exams. Further details can be found later in the newsletter. With all best wishes,
Jo Spencer

06/03/2020 Subject: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dear Parent/Carer, We know you will have been hearing a lot about the Coronavirus (COVID-19) on TV and in the media. We have no reports of anyone connected with our school – staff or students – being at risk of having Coronavirus. The good news is that the risk of getting the virus remains low. The health of all of our students and staff is our top priority and we are monitoring the advice from the Government and the NHS on a daily basis. I am getting in touch to make sure you have the most up to date information about and what we can all do to help prevent it from spreading. KEY FACTS FROM THE NHS: There are things you can do to help stop viruses like coronavirus spreading • when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) • put used tissues in the bin immediately • wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean The latest NHS information is available here - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ If you are worried that your child may have been exposed to the virus, it is vitally important that you do not go to the doctor or the hospital, you need to call NHS 111 who will advise you on what to do. It is vital that you let the school know immediately if you have been told by NHS111 that your child could be at risk of having Coronavirus. Please contact info@isaacnewtonacademy.org or call the school to let us know and ask to speak to the Principal. If NHS 111 has said that your child must stay at home, then they must not come to school. We will make sure that they can keep up with their studies if they have to away from school. Any parents or carers who have been told to stay at home by NHS 111 should ask someone else to take their children to school for them. I will keep you updated on the situation, if you have any questions or need any further information, please do not hesitate to get in contact with the school. Kind regards, Jo Spencer Interim Principal Isaac Newton Academy

TOP TIPS: Students
Marie Curie We often associate imagining and creativity with the arts. It is easy to understand why, because drawing, painting, designing and composing music all require this freedom of thought. However, scientific advancement also relies upon creative people imagining a different set of possibilities. Marie Curie was a physicist from the early 19th Century (a period when the challenges facing female scientists were severe – such as being forbidden to join the all-male Warsaw University in her native Poland). Despite these barriers, Marie Curie was one of the most important scientists in history. Amongst other achievements, she was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes. In 1903 she discovered two new chemical elements – polonium and radium. This was crucial in the development of early x-ray equipment. To discover an entire new substance relied on Curie’s imagining of a countless range of alternative explanations for what she witnessed in her experiments. To think ‘what if?’ and allow your mind to wander is as important to science as it is to the arts.
