Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher I hope you all enjoyed a lovely half term. This is a busy half term, so do please check the various key dates at the end of the newsletter. There is some advice in our newsletter this week for any families who have returned to the UK from specific areas affected by COVID-19. The new topics for this half term are now underway. Information Topic sheets for each year group are now online under the primary section of the school website and in the Home Learning tab under Parent Information. These will give you further insight into your child’s learning for this half term along with ideas about how you can support your child at home. The Home Learning for this week can also be found in the same place. If you need any further assistance accessing either, please let your child’s class teacher know. The spring term Pupil Progress Reports and Parent Progress Meetings will take place after the Easter break. The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out to you on Friday 24th April and the Parent Progress Meetings will take place on Tuesday 28th April; school will finish at 12.15pm on this day. To promote staff and pupil well-being across the whole Academy, there will be a ‘Home & Family Week’ next week. There will be no enrichment clubs running during the course of the week however Breakfast and After School Clubs will continue to be available. We ask that you make any payments online using your WisePay account in advance to book your child’s place. I would like to remind you all that it is essential that you pick your child up from school on time each day as collecting after the gate has closed will result in your child being taken to the After-School Club for which you will need to pay. It takes a lot of office staff time ringing up and chasing parents at the end of the school day who have not been picked up on time. I appreciate your support with this.

Colchester castle My name is Shresta, studying at Isaac Newton Academy. I am in Year 3 and this term we are learning about the “reckless Romans. As part of learning, my school decided to take us on a trip to Colchester castle. On Friday 7th February, we went to Colchester castle on a coach. I sat next to Maida who is in my class and the ride was very bumpy. I read my favourite book called "Summer term at Malory Towers". I took the book, if I got tired, I could read it. Once we reached the castle, I was mesmerised by how immense and sturdy the castle was. We learnt the rules as to how we should behave at the castle which was no running, no shouting and keeping close to the teacher. First, we had some time to explore the whole museum before we did an activity. The activity was to build houses which look like houses for the rich and poor people. At noon we had lunch, I ate two cheese sandwiches, a pear, a packet of raisins and a chocolate chip cookie which was delicious and tasty because I was starving. We went to explore the upstairs and saw a room full of games (which we played and was fun) and a room full of jewels, which were old, very bright and shiny. Right at the end, we went down to the cellar, which was about 15 metres down in the ground. First, the guide told us about how Romans invaded the Celts (people who lived in Britain) and what they wore. In the next room he taught us about different symbols used by Romans. Surprisingly, we got to go to the dungeon! It was so creepy! It was like being trapped in jail. After that, the guide brought us up and said goodbye. We got on the coach. The day had ended so quickly! I mostly stared outside all the way back to school and we reached INA safe and sound. I was picked up by my aunt. During the half term break, Shresta in Year 3 produced this wonderful piece of writing about her trip to Colchester Castle. 28 February 2020

Literature Week and World Book Day 2020 World Book Day takes place on Thursday 5th March and to celebrate the day we would like everyone to dress up as a book character for the day. This is the time when all those super heroes and princess costumes make their way into the classroom for the day. Small prizes will be given to the most interesting or inventive characters on the day. Pupils and teachers across the whole Academy will be taking part; we ask that every child pays a ÂŁ1 contribution which will go towards the buying of new library and whole-class reading books for the school. The children can wear a bought or home-made costume. Costumes can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish, however we must stress that the costume still needs to be practical enough for your child to participate in their everyday learning. It is important that your child is able to explain their character and who they are meant to be. The Year 1 PE teacher will adapt the lesson on the day so that the children can still take part wearing their costumes, but they must have appropriate PE footwear to change into for the lesson.

In addition to the costumes that pupils will be encouraged to wear, we will also be running two separate competitions in the lead up to World Book Day. Pupils are eligible to enter both competitions or choose one if preferred:

Book-related Design Pupils will be offered the chance to participate in an individual competition to design their own book-related display piece. Pupils could create their own bookmark, front cover design, book review or short story. Prizes will be awarded to a pupil from each year group based on these entries. All entries must be given to class teachers by Tuesday 3rd March. Some examples of our previous competition entries are displayed here:

‘Get Caught Reading’ Competition This year, we are also organising a new competition for pupils to enter in preparation for World Book Day. Our ‘Get Caught Reading’ competition asks pupils to take a photo (or series of photos) of them reading in different, exciting ways. Pupils might want to take their book away on a half term trip and take a photo or might simply want to capture how they enjoy reading at home. Pupils should bring their ‘Get Caught Reading’ photos to class teachers by Tuesday 3rd March and prizes for the most inventive images will be awarded on World Book Day.

Parent Workshop In addition to our competitions and opportunity to dress up as a book character, this year we would also like to invite parents and carers into school for a workshop based around supporting reading at home. During the session, we will discuss useful strategies for encouraging reading at home; offer recommended reading lists and provide details of how reading is taught at INAP. The same session will take place at 9am and 6pm on Wednesday 4th March. If you would like to attend this, please sign up at the office before Monday 2nd March. Places will be offered on a first-comefirst-serve basis.

We look forward to meeting our fantastic book characters on Thursday 5th March and seeing some wonderful competition entries!

Lovely Learning this week! In Design & Technology Year 2 have been designing and making their own money bag by using different sewing methods such as tacking and hemming to practice their sewing skills. We combined a variety of materials such as denim, felt, fabric, net etc. The children have had a fantastic time producing their money bags and pitching them to Year 3 pupils. This was an excellent insight to our overall topic theme young entrepreneurs.

Each class teacher has chosen two children from their class to represent them over the course of the half term. Their role includes helping children in the playground, welcoming visitors to their class and explaining some of their learning to them, along with helping the staff with other special jobs. BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Bravery

Bravery comprises five dispositions: Leadership Risk-taking Courage Optimism Experimentation At School •

We encourage the children to try new things and experiment every day whether it is a food that they have not tried before or new activities that they may not normally choose during the afternoon sessions. For Year 1 and 2 we would encourage the children to try different reading books or authors/topics they might not normally consider reading or to experiment with the paint during art – trying to create different effects etc.

We always encourage the children to have courage when they fall over and hurt themselves and to remain as calm as possible while we help them.

We aim for all pupils to demonstrate their leadership skills by helping others, being smart in their appearance, being kind, having good manners and generally demonstrating all their BRIDGES characteristics.

We encourage some of the quieter pupils to have the courage to share their ideas in class and to have work with optimism and develop a real ‘can do’ attitude..

At Home • Encourage your child to try as many different things as possible – whether it is food, different enrichment clubs, books etc. • Support your child to develop their own mind and not just follow what everyone else is doing. It is important that the pupils are able to try things without worrying about getting it wrong or worrying about what other people think. • Celebrate the fact that by making mistakes we are always learning. Give examples of times when you have had to be brave and try something for the first time, or when something did not go so well the first time but you learned from the mistakes you made and got better. • Help remind your child at home about being smart in their appearance and role-modelling good behaviour through their leadership skills. Allow your child to help with jobs and roles at home, taking on the responsibility for cleaning their room, keeping their books or toys organised etc.
