Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. Dear Parents and Carers, Coronavirus Update We have made the decision to postpone the Year 10 progress meeting which was due to be held next week on Thursday 19th March. School will therefore operate as a normal day, ending at 4.00pm. We have also made the difficult decision to cancel some upcoming school events: The Primary Spring Spectacular on 25th March and the Spring Concert on 2nd April. We continue to follow government and DFE advice regarding COVID-19. I will update you about any other actions we need to take as soon as any further announcements are made. Other than that, it is business as usual and our focus is on ensuring that students are focused on their learning at this critical stage in the year. On Tuesday, we held our exam meeting all students about to sit GCSEs or A levels and their parents to go through the exam regulations and to share the exam timetables. It was great to see such a fantastic turnout. The PowerPoint that Mr Crowther-Green and Mr Rothnie talked through is available for you to re-read on the website: Community>Resources for Parents. It is now only six school weeks to the start of the written GCSE exams. Year 11 students are focused and working very hard. The exam timetable can be found later in the newsletter. Some Year 11 students may be asked to attend revision lessons at Easter. We will publish further details of these sessions shortly. I hope that all students will take full advantage of any additional support offered at this crucial stage. With all best wishes,

Advice on the coronavirus for places of education How serious is the coronavirus?
• i t can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough & difficulty breathing • the infection is not serious for most people, including children • there is currently no vaccine • most people get better with enough rest, water to drink and medicine for pain
How likely are you to catch the virus?
• you can only catch it if you have been close to a person who has the virus • the chance of being in contact with the virus is currently low in the UK • if you have travelled to areas where many people are infected, your chance of catching the virus is higher, i.e. China and any affected areas

What should you do if you feel unwell?
Keep away from others and stay at home to stop the infection spreading. Avoid public transport if you think you have symptoms of coronavirus. If you become unwell at a place of education, tell a member of staff and let them know if you have travelled to any other countries in the last 14 days. If your staff member or parent thinks you have symptoms of coronavirus, they should call NHS 111 for advice. Follow the UK Government advice for childcare or educational settings gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19. Parents can visit NHS.UK to find out more information. Teachers and support staff should follow the UK Government advice. Staff, students and pupils who have returned from Wuhan and Hubei Province in China should self isolate, and NOT attend education or work for 14 days. See NHS.UK for advice on coronavirus.

Reporting Absensences When leaving a message regarding your child’s absence please state the reason for the absence. If it is a medically related issue please specify the details of your child’s symptoms and whether you have accessed any NHS support/advice. Given the current situation it is essential that we know whether or not your child is exhibiting any of the symptoms or have been in contact with anyone associated with Coronavirus. This information is vital to the safeguarding of all our students and staff.

We have been made aware of a recent rise in the number of attempted thefts and robberies in the local area. We have spoken to and advised all students to take extra care during their homeward journeys by concealing valuable items such as mobile phones and earphones. They should not take them out of their bags or pockets until they arrive safely at home. Can I ask you to reinforce this message to your children so that they take all the necessary steps to stay safe especially if they are travelling home independently. Many thanks. Mr Wilson

At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards assembly for their year group. Tickets will be distributed in the lead up to the awards assemblies. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like additional places, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you during these special celebrations.

TOP TIPS: Students
Marie Curie We often associate imagining and creativity with the arts. It is easy to understand why, because drawing, painting, designing and composing music all require this freedom of thought. However, scientific advancement also relies upon creative people imagining a different set of possibilities. Marie Curie was a physicist from the early 19th Century (a period when the challenges facing female scientists were severe – such as being forbidden to join the all-male Warsaw University in her native Poland). Despite these barriers, Marie Curie was one of the most important scientists in history. Amongst other achievements, she was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes. In 1903 she discovered two new chemical elements – polonium and radium. This was crucial in the development of early x-ray equipment. To discover an entire new substance relied on Curie’s imagining of a countless range of alternative explanations for what she witnessed in her experiments. To think ‘what if?’ and allow your mind to wander is as important to science as it is to the arts.

She builds on the tasks set and always seeks to interpret these tasks but asking questions and think outside of the box. She knows that the best creators are inspired by others uses her peers’ ideas as a stimulus for her own.

Holocaust Survivor, Susie Barnett BEM, visits INA On Monday 24th February we were very lucky to have a visit from a Holocaust survivor, Susie Barnett, BEM at INA. This was part of the school’s commemoration of the Holocaust, which had its 75th anniversary on the 27th January 2020. The talk was attended by students in Year 9 and Sixth form. Susie talked about her childhood, and her siblings and what it was like growing up, and how the Nazi occupation began to affect his life from being age of 7. Susie told of her father being sent to a concentration camp and then on to other countries, far away from the family. The students were told of her journey to England, and her life learning to live in a different country. Susie talked of losing friends, seeing horrifying events unfold and her focus on surviving such an ordeal. The family were all eventually reunited in England. Since then the family have rebuilt their lives and Susie has had a teaching career, children and grand-children. In the 1990s she was approached to tell her story for the first time, and she realised then she could begin to educate so many children by visiting schools. We were very lucky to have her visit us. The talk has been followed up by reflections by students in Year 9, and here are some thoughts from they have shared on Susie’s story: “It was really interesting to find out how Susie and her family were separated, which must have been scary, and all eventually were reunited together.” - Adon “I found the fact that Susie could tell her story so bravely was the best thing, talking about her family, with such a personal story, was amazing to hear.” - Khadija “The thing that was interesting was how Susie was so full of self-discipline and courage to keep going after all the terrible events. She tells her story with so much care.” - Yonas “The bravery Susie and her family for leaving Germany and travelling to England at such young ages, without their parents, just so they could stay safe makes me so full of admiration for her.” - Summer The Year 9 students were excellent ambassadors and a superb audience to Susie.
