Are we there yet?

I’m sure most of us remember climbing in the family station wagon and driving long hours or even days to visit family during summer vacation. My grandparents lived in Tulsa, OK, which is a two-day drive from St. Simons Island. By the time we hit Waycross, headed westward, my sister would have drawn the imaginary “line” in the back seat that I was forbidden to cross. The dreaded phrase, “Dad, he’s bothering me again,” would result in swift retribution if you weren’t prepared. Ask any guy over the age of 55 where he sat in the car on family trips and 99.9% will tell you they sat behind the driver’s seat. The reason being, of course, that it was harder for your dad or mom to make contact as they reached back to “swat” you when you did something that ticked them off.

My sister was tone deaf when it came to singing, but still loved to sing along to any tune by Carole King or Carly Simon. To this day, I wince whenever I hear the song, “You’re So Vain.” I can only imagine what my dad was thinking during those two-day drives. I also feel sorry for my brother-in-law who has been behind the wheel during their family trips through the years.

Since I always sat directly behind my dad on these long drives, I could never see his face, but I’m guessing he looked a lot like those dads I see headed south on I-95 in SUVs with license plates from states like NY, Virginia, and Maine. When I glance over as I pass them and see the family most likely headed to Disney World inside, the dad driving will usually meet my gaze with a “I wish I could trade places with YOU right now” look.

Luckily, living on St. Simons Island, I can enjoy a staycation during the summer! No need to get in a car and drive for hours when there is SO much to do right here! Our June issue is chock full of fun activities to enjoy right here, so get out and enjoy your island vacation one daycation at a time!

Our vast array of island eateries is where we can get started with something red. Bennie’s Red Barn on the North end of the island is the oldest, privately owned restaurant on St. Simons Island. As history tells it, when Bennie Gentile was in the war in Germany he took cover in an old barn, and it was the interior of that barn that served as his inspiration to build this restaurant with his wife Louise. The Barn first opened for dinner on New Year’s Eve 1954, with Bennie (known as Papa) at the helm and local icon Alvin Davis, from Frederica Yacht Club, alongside him. Although Bennie and Alvin have since passed away, Bennie’s family still operates the restaurant, and it has continued to be the spot where locals and visitors have celebrated special family gatherings for nearly 70 years. While Bennie’s has become more casual than its former coat and tie supper club days, the family and staff are still dedicated to fine Southern hospitality and keep many of the old traditions alive. and tie still greet you and recite the evening’s menu tableside. A warm and welcoming place, especially when there’s a roaring fire in the giant fireplace, the Red Barn is where birthdays are celebrated, couples become engaged in front of the fireplace and return each year for anniversaries, and kids visit with Santa on Christmas Eve. You can still find the iconic “Raccoon” boozy after-dinner treat on the menu. Created especially for a group of local businessmen who have met at the same table (also named after them) at the same time every week for many generations, this too is a traditional island classic.

But there’s SO much more than just Bennie’s Red Barn when it comes to excellent eating on the island. In fact, that takes us right into the second color on our rainbow. Start your day with some orange juice and a delicious breakfast at Palmer’s Village Café near the pier or grab your OJ and some fresh New York bagels from Sandy Bottom Bagels and take them to the beach to greet the sunrise. You’ll want to be down at the pier when the sun sets to witness that gorgeous golden hour, but there’s even more gold to be found in the Village. The Golden Isles CVB Welcome Center located at 529 Beachview Drive has information about local attractions, activities, accommodations, transportation, and the latest issue of Elegant Island Living! In their Live Oak Store, are works by local artists, Golden Isles and RSM Classic branded attire and other gear, books, toys, and gift items. Nearby, several shops on Mallery Street offer unique gifts, art, jewelry, apparel for all ages, beach accessories and toys, souvenirs and more. One of the most striking features about St. Simons Island is its lush green maritime forest. The St. Simons Land Trust is committed to protecting and preserving this natural beauty and other significant greenspace on the island. Experience the wonder of this wilderness by visiting its protected properties. Cannon’s Point is a 608-acre peninsula that boasts more than six miles of river shoreline and salt marsh and is home to the last intact maritime forest on the island. Open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, visitors can bike or hike along trails and paths on the south end, take a break in the guest pavilion, fish or kayak at the waterfront, and stand among the forest canopy at the south-end observation tower. They can also walk or bike the two and a half miles to the north end, where the path is surrounded by undisturbed habitat and ends at the site of a

former 18th century home. Here guests can climb another observation tower to view archaeological ruins of the former Couper Plantation, including outbuildings and slave quarters built in the early 1800s. Nearby, and easily accessible from the bike path along Lawrence Road, Guale Preserve a wilderness oasis in the heart of the island. The preserve offers almost two miles of trails for passive recreation. These hiking trails guide you through maritime forest, old dune ridges with scrub live oaks, and stands of pond pine, unique pine tree only found on older parts of barrier islands. There are interpretive signs throughout the property that provide information about the various habitats inside the Preserve, share quotes from early naturalist William Bartram, and display incredible artwork by Philip Juras. Green is for sea turtles too! They’re one of five species found along the Georgia coast. While loggerheads are the only species that nest regularly on our barrier islands, green and leatherback sea turtles both occasionally nest here. You can learn fascinating facts – like the green sea turtle’s name comes not from the color of its shell, but from the layer of fat underneath it – about all of these species at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) on Jekyll Island. Georgia’s only sea turtle education and rehabilitation facility, GSTC offers the public a chance to learn about sea turtles and see rehabilitation in action with a host of interactive exhibits and experiences. Year-round indoor and outdoor programs are also available for guests of all ages. Their summer beach programs include Ride with Dawn Patrol, Ride with Night Patrol, Evening Turtle Walks, and Sunrise Turtle Walks. These experiences are educational for the whole family. Operated by the 4-H, Tidelands Nature Center on Jekyll Island also offers up-close viewing of live marine animals and reptiles native to the Georgia cost with a live coastal species exhibit gallery. The saltwater exhibit area includes aquariums with live aquatic animals including fish, crabs, sting rays, sea turtles and more, as well interpretive displays about seashells, the salt marsh, and shrimp trawling. The reptile area features many species of reptiles including gopher tortoises, snakes, alligators, and turtles. See fish in the 1,300-gallon aquarium located in the annex. They also offer hands-on coastal ecology programs, guided kayak tours, canoe rentals, and have a birding area (often visited by painted buntings) and a wildlife viewing platform. One last note about sea turtles: nesting season on our beaches is May-October. Please help provide the turtles with safe paths by filling in holes and knocking down sandcastles before you leave. Do not touch or disturb nesting turtles, hatchlings, or nests. At night, keep the beach as dark as possible and, if using flashlights, use certified turtle-friendly red LED lights.

Now let’s hit the greens. The breathtaking natural beauty of our surroundings and mild weather year-round make golfing a popular pastime here. The Golden Isles is home to well-known PGA Tour players, including 2017 World Golf Hall of Fame and 2019 PGA of America Hall of Fame member Davis Love III and current Team USA Ryder Cup Captain Zach Johnson, as well as some of the country’s most spectacular and widely acclaimed courses. The area offers nearly 200 holes of golf in classic 18-hole, 9-hole, and links courses for your recreational pleasure and many opportunities for viewing a tournament. Fantastic courses plus top-notch practice facilities and world-renowned instructors have drawn countless well-known professional and amateur golfers from around the world to play, compete, learn, and live here.

In October 2009, the inaugural McGladrey Classic PGA TOUR event, hosted by Davis Love III brought professional golfers from around the nation to compete on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. Now renamed The RSM Classic (for title sponsor RSM US LLP), this Official PGA TOUR FedExCup Event takes place on Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside and Plantation Courses on St. Simons Island each fall. The tournament, hosted by the Davis Love Foundation, is an eagerly anticipated occasion on the island with familyfriendly events like a Wiffle Ball Challenge, free Community Day, and Charity Putting Challenge, scheduled during the week leading up to the tournament. The scenery makes it a fun course to walk and the play has been competitive. There are ample volunteer opportunities and many people from out of the area come to the Golden Isles to work the tournament and see some of the world’s top golfers in a laid-back setting that offers the finest Southern hospitality. The tournament returns this November, learn more at rsmclassic.com. It’s a great time to plan a trip here!

You can also head over to the TopGolf Swing Suite at The Inn at Sea Island to perfect your swing or enjoy a little fun with simulated play on some of the world’s best courses. For miniature golf enjoyment, there’s the Neptune Park Fun Zone miniature golf course on St. Simons Island or Jekyll Island mini golf’s two 18-hole courses.

BlueBuckets of blue crabs and nets full of Wild Georgia shrimp are a few examples of the bounty from our marshes and waterways. Not only do they offer some of the best views and a wonderful world of wildlife to observe, but they are spectacular for fishing too! You’ll find eco-tours, sunset dolphin cruises, and lots of charter fishing options any day of the week. Plan a guided scenic family kayak tour with Southeast Adventure Outfitters or try out Turtle Tides’ outrigger canoe for something new. With these options, not only will you be treated to a more up close and personal look at playful dolphins, grinning gators, scavenging shorebirds, and maybe the occasional otter, sea turtle, mink, or manatee, you can search for shark teeth on remote beaches and see private islands full of wildlife that are otherwise inaccessible. There are dolphin cruises offered from St. Simons Island, Jekyll, and Darien. A big favorite for group excursions is an outing on the

Lady Jane shrimp boat. This retired trawler provides demonstrations on how they haul in and sort the catch in their nets. The piers are popular spots for float-fishing, bottom fishing, and crabbing. Numerous fishing charters are available for in-shore and off-shore trips. If you need fishing gear, be sure to stop by On the Fly Outfitters in Historic Downtown Brunswick to get set up in style. These guys really know their stuff and occasionally host fly-tying workshops too!

Just a reminder: anyone who fishes, crabs or seines in Georgia waters and is 16 years old or older must possess a fishing license. Any Georgia fishing license is valid in Glynn County and the Golden Isles, allowing for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. If you’re going out on a charter, most charter licenses cover their guests, but be sure to ask whether you’ll also need to obtain a Georgia fishing license if you don’t already have one.

Purple Rain is just one of the songs you’re bound to hear covered by one of the island’s local bands if you get out to explore the live music scene. The Golden Isles is alive with music every night of the week, and we can always help you find who’s playing where. We’ve got the scene covered from the piano bar at Georgia Sea Grill to Wednesday open mic night at Wine Alley, next to Wine, Body & Soul, in Redfern Village, to seasoned performers, popular local cover bands, and touring musicians stopping here to rock our stages and outdoor concerts. While music offerings are lighter on weekdays, every Friday and Saturday there are at least a dozen local venues hosting live music both indoors and outside. If you cross the causeway on those evenings, you can also catch the free Brunswick Music District concerts with favorite local and visiting bands in Jekyll Square East, next to Tipsy McSway’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill. You’ll even find live music for your brunching entertainment on Sunday afternoons!

“But what KIND of music is out there?” you might ask. Our local bands truly run the gamut from classic rock, 80s and 90s covers and jazz to Southern blues and country. The best way to find out where the music you like is being played each week by checking out “I’m With the Band” on the EIL website at elegantislandliving.net, Facebook and Instagram @imwiththebandssi. This is a comprehensive and frequently updated list of who’s playing where and when each week, including special concerts that pop up and any nearby festivals. There are also guides to local artists and music venues on the site in case you aren’t familiar with them. We’re passionate about music and don’t want you to miss a thing!

While brown isn’t the prettiest color on the spectrum, it’s one that’s important here in the Golden Isles. New visitors are often surprised to learn that the murky brown seawater surrounding Georgia’s barrier islands isn’t “dirty” water. This sweet tea colored water actually contributes to the delicious appeal of our shrimp. Stirred up sediment and tannins leached from decaying organic material, such as the spartina grasses, leaves, and tree bark that wash offshore from the swamps and marshes give the water its brown coloring. Sedimentary deposits from the large rivers here that flow into the ocean make the seabed near our shore muddy, rather than sandy. Storms churning off the coast stir that sediment up, making the mix darker and more obvious, but that sweet tea color is a consistent trait of our waters, no matter the weather. Although this means you won’t get a pic of a pristine turquoise paradise for the gram, it’s not a bad thing at all, because the water is rich in nutrients that are ideal for our wildlife. Fish, crustaceans, and other sea life are plentiful, which also attracts a wide variety of birds like brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills, herons, and egrets. It provides a healthy diet for other animals too. It’s well known that locally caught sweet white Wild Georgia Shrimp are in high demand in the seafood market because they have the best flavor. They’re caught with nets right out of their natural environment off our shores and not farm-raised or altered in any way.

So if you ever find yourself wishing these barrier islands had the clear waters and white sands of the Gulf, find a spot to eat while overlooking the water at sunset, order a large glass of sweet tea and some peel and eat shrimp or Low Country Boil. Take in the picturesque view of the shrimp boats on the horizon with birds fluttering above and dolphins frolicking in their wake. Marvel at the beauty of the long-legged egrets fishing in the marsh and the pelicans perched on their posts, as if posing for the pictures you’re sure to take. While you sip your sweet tea consider whether you’d trade that delicious distinctive Southern flavor for a plain glass of water even if it did look prettier.

Black tie occasions are mostly limited to big galas for our local charitable organizations and the many destination weddings here, but there’s no shortage of culture! This area draws a large community of artists and artisan creators inspired by the beauty that surrounds us. In addition to painters, potters, sculptors, woodcrafters, and jewelry makers, we also have prolific writers and talented stage performers.

The Island Players (theislandplayers.com) have been bringing the stage to life with a variety of productions since 1956. The oldest community theatre in the Golden Isles, their annual season offers four shows at the St. Simons Casino Theatre, as well as the Young Peoples Summer Workshop production in July. The Brunswick Actors Theatre (soglogallery.com) is an intimate theatre, seating just over 100 patrons, in SoGlo Gallery on Newcastle St. Their always humorous and often poignant shows are always a real treat and their ticket price include desserts and coffee/tea. The Ritz Theatre is where you'll find the Golden Isles Penguin Project performing their annual summer musical theater production with a cast of children and young adults with disabilities and special needs in all roles, performing with the assistance of on-stage mentors. They also host performances by touring groups like the Peach State opera and others, as well as holiday productions. Both of these theatres also have art galleries with monthly exhibitions.

The Coastal Photographer’s Guild will be presenting their 15th annual photography exhibit The Big Photo Show at SoGlo Gallery July 7-August 5. Entries will be judged by professionals and there will also be a “People’s Choice” award by votes cast at the gallery through August 4.

For fine art, Anderson Fine Art Gallery (andersonfineartgallery.com) is a destination gallery for the finest in original representational paintings that encompass landscapes and still life scenes, as well as some nonrepresentational works. The gallery’s roster includes an outstanding group of professional and emerging artists. For more than decade Anderson Fine Art has sponsored workshops taught by professional artists from across the country who are brought here to instruct follow painters in the Artists’ Annex around the corner, which is also an abstract gallery. Glynn Visual Arts (glynnvisualarts.org) is at the heart of the art community, with a main gallery on Skylane Drive, and space in the Visitor’s Center on Beachview. They offer more than dozen exhibitions by local and nationally celebrated artists annually, three major art festivals, and a variety of classes and creative opportunities for adults and children. ArtTrends Gallery (arttrends.gallery) is an artists’ co-op displaying and selling eclectic works by local artists. Under the canopy of live oaks at Postell Park, you’ll find Crafts in the Village each month with 40-50 varying vendors offering everything from fine art and photography to pottery and woodworking, jewelry, and gourmet goodies.

The gleaming white tower of the St. Simons Island lighthouse is perhaps the most visible symbol of the island’s history. No visit here is complete without a climb to the top. Take the 129 stairs up to the observation deck to get a birds-eye view of the island and learn more about the history of this special island icon in the museum housed in the brick lightkeeper’s cottage. A few interesting facts: the current lighthouse is not the original light, which was built by James Gould in 1807; this lighthouse, constructed by renowned Georgia architect Charles Cluskey in 1872, is actually the third structure; it uses a third-order Fresnel lens. While many hundreds of lighthouses are operational along sea and lake shores in the U.S., only 85 cast and concentrate their beams through a Fresnel lens. Our lighthouse is one of only 15 that operate using an authentic, thirdorder Fresnel lens. At night, ships navigating our coastal waters can see its brilliant beam from up to 20 miles away. The lighthouse is identifiable to mariners by its flash pattern of one strong flash every 60 seconds. It’s also rumored to be haunted! Another site operated by the Coastal Georgia Historic Society is the

WWII Home Front Museum where you can learn more about the island’s earlier days through interactive exhibits and recorded recollections of people who lived and worked here in those times. For more information, see coastalgeorgiahistory.org.

Fort Frederica National Monument takes you back in time as one of Georgia’s earliest English settlements, founded by General James Oglethorpe with the fort built in 1736. By 1743, the town had nearly 1,000 residents. The site was established as a national monument in May 1936. Ranger-led tours are offered daily and there are also living history demonstrations and special events at the fort. Admission is free. Other sites of historic significance include Christ Church Frederica and its cemetery, Wesley Memorial Gardens, Historic Harrington Schoolhouse Cultural Center, the Bloody Marsh battle site, and the Ibo Landing marker. Board one of the trolleys that operate from the Pier for a guided tour around the island and the sites mentioned here.

The Crafts in the Village artisan vendors will be set up and selling their wares in Postell Park, beginning at 10:00 a.m. daily, Saturday, July 1 through Tuesday, July 4. Shop original art, woodworking, pottery, jewelry, woodcrafts, plants, specialty foods, candles, soaps, skincare, décor and much more underneath the canopy of shady live oaks in the heart of the village on St. Simons Island. Four fantastic days of shopping opportunities!

The 39th Annual Sunshine Festival Race begins the day on Tuesday, July 4th. This holiday event is fun for the whole family and has been enjoyed by generations. At 7:00 a.m., 5k runners will follow a route that winds through the beautiful live oak and Spanish moss-lined streets in the Village with Kings Park at 601 Mallery St (across from Mallery Park) as the start and finish point. This is a USTAF Certified 5k route and chip timing is provided by Second Wind Timing. The 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk will start in the same location immediately following the 5k at 8:00 a.m. In addition to the usual 5k and 1 Mile Awards for top finishers, there are awards for Best Costume, Best (Largest) Team, Fastest Team, Cheetah Speed Team Challenge (for CrossFit or Fitness Gym Teams) and awards for the best-decorated homes along the route.

There will be a Runners Expo with Packet Pickup held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 3rd at St. Simons Presbyterian Church, 205 Kings Way. Free runner swag will be available for runners at the Expo. It is strongly recommended that you (or your friends and family) pick up your packet on Monday, the day before the race. Race Day Packet Pickup will begin at 6:00 a.m. on the 4th at Mallery Park Pavilion. Registration for the 5K will end promptly at 6:45 a.m. and 1 Mile Race registration will end at 7:45 a.m. While walkup registration at the Expo or on Race Day is permitted, participants registered by June 12th are the only runners guaranteed a high-quality short-sleeve T-shirt (youth and adult sizes)

Golden Isles Track Club uses the proceeds of this event to support healthy living through motion in our community, including several youth organizations, area high school track, cross-country teams, and local projects that enhance the walking, running, and cycling experience, including water refill stations and trails. There’s traditionally a patriotic golf cart parade that takes place in the Village in the afternoon on the 4th of July, but details aren’t available yet, so keep an eye on the EIL website and social media accounts for more info. On the evening of Tuesday, July 4, bring your family, friends, beach chairs, blankets, and snacks to get a good spot in and around Neptune Park and the Village to see the

fireworks at the pier. Admission and parking are free. Fireworks begin at sundown, around 9:00 p.m. The pier and south end of Mallery Street will be closed to cars and pedestrian traffic beginning that morning.

A Brunswick A

Brunswick's annual Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 4th at Mary Ross Waterfront Park. It begins with a golf cart and bike parade, as well as a pet parade at 5:30 p.m. (Registration at 5:00 p.m.)

At 6:00 p.m. the Penguin Project will perform a portion of Disney’s Lion King, Jr. Old fashioned games, live music by Squirt Gun, food vendors, free watermelon, and fireworks at dusk make this a fun evening for the whole family. For more details, visit discoverbrunswick.com.

A Jekyll Island A

Watch the night sky light up as Jekyll Island celebrates Independence Day on Tuesday with a fireworks display. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m., depending on lighting and weather

conditions, when the sky offers the best background for this incredible pyrotechnic display. The fireworks display is viewable across an oceanside section of the island, so grab a seat on the beach or park and view the show from your car at the premier viewing locations of Great Dunes Beach Park and Oceanview Beach Park. The Jekyll Island parking fee will be increased for the day of the event. The fee at the parking gate will be an additional $4 per daily pass; annual passes are not impacted. School’s out for summer! If you need some help keeping the kids entertained, here are some local programs and activities you might consider.

Marshes of Glynn Libraries 2023 Summer Reading Program

“All Together Now” is the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program at the St. Simons Island Public Library and Brunswick-Glynn County Library. There will be fun in-person programs and events at both libraries weekly beginning June 5. Weekly storytime for ages 0-6 with Ms. Vicki in Brunswick and Ms. Ali on St. Simons Island will also resume in June and July. Teen programs for rising 6th graders through high school include a Robotics Camp (June 5-14), Anime Club (June 13 and July 11), Nintendo Club (June 20, July 18), Juggling Workshop (June 22), and Photography Workshop (June 19, 21, 23). Except for the Photography Workshop, which is an outdoor class meeting in the Casino atrium outside the St. Simons Island Library, all teen programs meet at the Brunswick Library.

Some of June’s fun will include a hula performance by Mahealani’s Polynesian Entertainment, Art in the Atrium, Wild Wonders Animal Adventures, Tember’s Tales puppet show, and the “Quite a Catch” juggling program with Ron Anglin. In order to better anticipate attendance, the library system will be using free tickets available through EventBrite up to the night before the event for selected events like these this summer.

Your kids can Beat the Heat enjoying a fun-filled summer of activities with the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia through August 7. They have 12 locations in Glynn and McIntosh Counties for your convenience. Summer camp is $75/child per week and includes breakfast and lunch. They engage kids in summer brain gain activities and offer daily field trips. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This year’s weekly themes sound like so much fun!

Stripling’s welcomes Brunswick native, Jack Moran to their Brunswick store as Market Manager. A Glynn Academy graduate, Moran’s rst job in 1975 was in the meat department at IGA. KEHOE RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEERISM

Southeast Georgia Health System Volunteer Services recently recognized Ed Kehoe as the Brunswick Campus Winter Volunteer of the Quarter. A FLETC retiree, Kehoe joined Volunteer Services in 2008 and assisted in the Admissions department until the 2020 suspension of Volunteer Services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned in 2021 and now volunteers with the Patient Experience department, rounding on patients to identify their concerns or compliments to help ensure their Health System experience is a positive one. Kehoe and his wife, Valerie, live on St. Simons Island and are members of St. Williams Catholic Church, where he assists with activities, such as Hugs for Haiti. A Salute to the Knot Ships

During World War II, the Brunswick shipyard of J.A. Jones Construction Company produced 99 cargo ships as part of the vital program to supply Allied troops overseas and win the war. The shipyard is best known for building 85 mammoth vessels known as Liberty ships. Not as much has been written about the remaining 14 smaller cargo carriers known as Knot ships. For comparison, the Liberty ship was 441 feet long and had a draft of over 27 feet, whereas the Knot ship was 338.5 long with a draft of 18 feet. These ships were especially useful in shallow harbors and for coastal runs and the “island hopping” that was a critical part of the war in the Pacific. They were named for nautical knots or given a two-word name that began with “Coastal.”

The Brunswick shipyard delivered its first two ships of this class, MS Lock Knot and MS Ring Splice, in June 1945, a month after victory was declared in Europe. At that time, there was no end in sight for the war in the Pacific. These ships had been launched in March and April respectively, then outfitted and tested before leaving the shipyard. The launchings were similar to those arranged for Liberty ships. Witnessed by crowds of dignitaries and

spectators, a woman acting as sponsor christened the vessel with a ceremonial bottle of champagne. Either one or two cosponsors were also involved in the festivities. One addition to the event was the presentation of a ceremonial knotted rope in honor of the ship’s name.

All of the Knot ships built in Brunswick survived the war. Several were scrapped in the 1970s, and others were sold to private companies, some being refitted as drill ships or floating storage.

One of this month’s images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives shows MS Lock Knot to the right of the shipyard’s last Liberty ship, SS Patrick B. Whelan, demonstrating the difference in size. Also shown are two photographs from ship launchings. At the launch of MS Crown and Diamond on April 28, 1945, sponsor Mrs. W.R.
