PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Summer of (Your Name Here)

O

ne of my favorite Seinfeld episodes is “The Summer of George,” where George Costanza decides to spend the whole summer doing whatever HE wants to do! What a great idea, right? I think the last Summer of David was in 1975, when I was 13. My buddies and I would ride all over St. Simons Island doing whatever we wanted. We loved to go to the Casino (not the Emerald Princess), where we could swim in the giant pool with the high dive, try to impress girls with our skating ability at the skating rink, and bowl at the bowling alley. It only cost fifty cents to swim and maybe a dollar to rent a pair of skates for the whole afternoon. If Richard Adams was working at the bowling alley we could bowl for FREE! Actually, not quite free. Part of Richard’s job responsibilities included sweeping the lanes, taking out the trash, returning bowling balls to the racks etc. In exchange for doing Richard’s “side work,” my buddies and I didn’t have to pay to bowl. It was a win-win for us!

We loved to ride to the pier and see what the folks had caught in their buckets. Of course, the baseball park always had a good pick-up game going, which is why you needed to keep your baseball glove on your handlebars at all times, just in case. I guess nowadays you need to keep your pickleball racquet in your car at all times!

It was fun to ride on the beach and look at the older girls in bikinis. Massengale Beach was where all the high school kids hung out, so you could listen to the music on the dozens of radios all tuned to WAPE on AM 95 out

of Jacksonville. Every half hour WAPE would play the sound of an ape to let you know what time it was. No need for iPhone back then! When you heard “AH-EEE-AHHHH” you knew it was time to turn over on your towel. Unfortunately, Summer of ’75 was also the last time I swam out to the sandbars that were always about 100 yards offshore. As a member of the Golden Isles Swim Team Boys 13-14 Freestyle Relay Team, I swam out to the sandbars all the time. I’d heard stories of legendary locals like Jimmy Bankston, who used to swim to Jekyll from the St. Simons beach, and I looked forward to the day when I might attempt such a feat. But that year, one Saturday in late June, my buddies and I went to the matinee movie at The Lanier Theatre. Dun dun….dun dun….dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn! After THAT movie, we never swam out to the sandbars again. Make Summer 2022 on SSI the Summer of (your name)!

ST. SIMONS ISLAND IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO STEP BACK IN TIME. And it’s been an ideal location to vacation since the 1870s. Back in the days of the lumber mills, boats brought mail and passengers from the mainland. When the new lighthouse was built in 1872, the keeper created a small amusement park that attracted numerous visitors. Families from Brunswick, Waycross, and Baxley made the island their summer retreat and by the 1880s the resort industry was thriving. When hotels and a new pier were erected on the south end with regular ferry service available, wealthy northerners began spending their vacations here too. The opening of the Torras Causeway in 1924 marked a new era by making the island’s beaches easily accessible by automobile to locals and tourists alike. A few years later Howard Coffin added to the island’s appeal with a golf course, yacht club, and residential development complete with paved roads. the island. Officers and soldiers and their families also took up residence at Naval Air Station St. Simons, the newly designated Navy training facility and radar station located where The King and Prince Resort is today. Because of this increased growth, the military made substantial improvements to the island’s infrastructure, leading to booming development on St. Simons Island in the 1950s and 60s. The setting for the photos you’ll see on these pages was already

We’re a pet-friendly place, so don’t be surprised to see watering stations outside the shops or have a pup dining at a patio table nearby. The Village is also where you’ll find our iconic lighthouse and the Casino Building that houses our public library and a theatre (but has nothing whatsoever to do with gambling). While there are

stairs to access the beach in the Village, this is not considered our main beach area as the sandy shoreline disappears and the water reaches to the Johnson rocks at high tide. You’ll want to head north up the island to East Beach for all day play in the sand and surf. Another great place to visit is the Golden Isles CVB Welcome Center located at 529 Beachview Drive. or kids’ activities, there’s no shortage of attractions to entertain. On St.

Simons Island, you can start at the Neptune Park Fun Zone in the Village. There you’ll find a playground with swings, a miniature golf course that’s open year-round, and the pool area. There is something for everyone in the family, including a wading pool and water gym with slide and water cannons for the kids, a separate pool with lap lanes at one end and zero-entry access at the other. All areas are constantly monitored by American Red Cross-certified lifeguards. Because a day at the pool works up an appetite and thirst, there’s also an on-site concession stand and tables with umbrellas so you can enjoy refreshments in the shade as you lounge by the pool. Visit glynncounty.org for pool hours and rate information. New in Mama Mia! Mamas Jenny Harris and Mimi Luce are stunning while sunning in swimwear from Cricket Shop. Jenny’s beautiful daughters, Isla and Georgia, and Mimi’s precious Madeline all wear children’s clothing from Bailey Boys. Isla’s rhinestone headband is from Cricket Shop. Nash Hargraves looks on with beach blonde boyish appeal in an ensemble from Frederica Pharmacy. This new pharmacy has all your pool/beach needs covered from sunscreen, mesh totes, sunglasses, to fun inflatables and the mermaid dolls seen on page 55. erkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hodnett Cooper Real Estate’s Luxury Collection Specialists represent some of the most sought-after homes in the beautiful Golden Isles. Consistently raising the bar in terms of luxury real estate marketing and delivering results to their clients year after year, this team of 21 Realtors has been pleased to represent over 170 transaction sides through April of 2022 – totaling over $76 million in total sales volume. They specialize in representing luxury and unique properties including private homes, waterfront estates, equestrian properties, and residences with historical significance or unique architectural details.

MEET A FEW MEMBERS OF THE LUXURY COLLECTION SPECIALISTS TEAM:

Ann Dempsey “I have a passion for real estate because I want to help people, and I want my help to make a difference in their lives. I believe that helping people find a home is just one of the greatest things that you can do,” shares Ann Dempsey. Ann has been serving clients in the Golden Isles for over 40 years and demonstrates the passion she has for her profession and the people she gets to help every day. Ann’s dedication to real estate shows; her total sales volume through April of 2022 is over $6.1 million. Ann’s Favorite Activities in the Golden Isles: There are so many opportunities in the Golden Isles to participate in musical 80

activities. My family and I have been involved in many of these, and we have treasured each one!

Winnie Skarpalezos A recent client for Winnie Skarpalezos shared his comments: “Winnie just makes you feel like you’re a friend and nothing seems transactional. I’ve bought and sold a lot of property in my life and never enjoyed the process until working with Winnie. When the sale was completed on the condo, I told my wife I will not miss the property, but I will miss Winnie. Her glee is just infectious, and you just have a better day when you talk with her.” Winnie’s love for real estate and for the Golden Isles is interwoven; she

truly loves what she does, and it serves her clients well. Her total sales volume through April of this year is just over $5 million. Winnie’s Favorite Activities in the Golden Isles: Our area is just so amazing, but I’d have to say one of my favorite things to do is bike ride … and I just love the beach!

Dawn Miller “Numbers are important, whether you’re listing or buying a home. I taught math for ten years, everything from Algebra and Trigonometry to Calculus and Geometry. Now I like to talk numbers for and with my clients. When it comes to a market analysis, I’m very thorough.

Everything has a value and I think it’s important to point out what that value is for my clients,” shares Dawn Miller. This schoolteacher turned Realtor represents her clients through the Golden Isles and has closed over $5 million in total sales volume through April of this year. Dawn’s Favorite Activities in the Golden Isles: I love to be on the water, whether we are just enjoying the views of the marshes and wildlife, taking a sunset cruise or fishing. Without a doubt, there is no place I’d rather be.

Millie Weathers Renowned throughout Camden County, Millie Weathers is a new member of the team of Luxury Collection Specialists with Hodnett Cooper Real Estate, but she is no stranger to the real estate profession. Millie has specialized in the luxury real estate market in Camden County since 2003. Her clients benefit from her unique perspective as an Accredited Staging Professional, Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, Member of the Institute of Luxury Home Marketing and International Association of Home Professionals. Millie’s sales volume through April of this year is $2.5 million. Millie’s Favorite Activities in the Golden Isles: Enjoying the water by boating on the St. Marys River and anchoring on the beaches of Cumberland Island National Seashore to view

the wild horses brought over by the Spanish Conquistadors during the 16th century.

Melanie Barger Golden Isles native Melanie Barger believes that “Every day there is something beautiful and exciting in the Golden Isles. Although it sells itself, it’s a privilege to get to introduce clients to the area.” Melanie has been involved with real estate transactions throughout the Golden Isles. She is currently featuring a rare maritime retreat in Wildlife Preserve on St. Simons Island. Melanie’s Favorite Activities in the Golden Isles: Seining, fishing the floodtide or skinny water with my son, crabbing, or clamming. Bringing the bounty of the sea home to the table always feels like a celebration.

P OLISHED PEYTON by Jennifer Daniel

There’s a New Kid in Town

W

hile most of you are probably humming an old Eagles song in your head right now, some of you are cringing. You are thinking to yourself, “It’s so hard to be the new kid.” I’d agree with you. It’s hard at any age. It’s hard when you are twelve and you and your family move to a new state. It’s hard when you are moving away to start a new job. It’s even hard that first time you travel to a new city on vacation. Being new can be difficult even for the most outgoing person. I have two very different children. One has never met a stranger. The other would check the option of sticking with her core people for life while wearing a t-shirt that read, “No new people needed.” A bit of an exaggeration, but you get my point. As we find ourselves in new situations, I am always reminded that they both need help when they are “new.”

This summer, you will probably experience “new.” For example, you might drop your daughter at the same summer camp she has attended for years but, she will have new cabinmates and you will meet new parents. Here are my top tips for all ages whenever you’re the “new kid in town.” Look people in the eye, extend your hand, and introduce yourself to everyone. Stand up to greet others when you’re meeting them for the first time. Children should extend this courtesy as well. Show interest in the people you meet. Don’t say, “We must get together,” unless you truly mean it. Let new friends, co-workers, and other parents know the best way to reach you. Most people

have a preference on this both socially and in the business world. Listen. Ask questions. Don’t expect others to automatically include you in activities. Invite various groups of people over to visit. Ask different co-workers to meet for lunch. Encourage your children to ask the children next door to play basketball in the yard. Keep in mind that children will learn more from the behavior you model and invite a new neighbor over for coffee or wine. Being the new person somewhere can feel uncomfortable and awkward, but it is something we all experience. The more often you encounter situations with new people, the easier it becomes. I hope you meet many new people this summer while making lots of memories with friends and family.

A prequel to Parker’s Second Samuel, set in 1925, A Higher Place in Heaven takes place on the front porch of New Hope, the home just outside the town of Second Samuel, where Miss Madison, her longtime friend and servant, Miss Simpson, and their sons, live a quiet life. That is, quiet until visiting family discover a document that would forever change the history of New Hope and its residents’ lives. Filled with laughter and tears, anger and forgiveness, this touching story speaks to divisions that we still struggle with today. It also shows that, no matter our differences, love and grace can bring people together and keep New Hope alive. Shows Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3:00 p.m. Tickets at soglogallery.com.

HAVE A JOLLY HOLIDAY The Young People’s Summer Workshop (YPSW) has been an Island Players production since 1975, attracting 60 to 80 kids ages 8+ each year to be introduced to the wonderful world of theater. Not only do these young thespians have a great deal of fun and meet other kids to share the theater experience, but they also learn about stage etiquette and how to be a responsible team participant. This summer’s production, directed by Jeff Dempsey, is Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, Jr. Shows featuring two alternating casts will take place July 13-24 at the St. Simons Casino Theatre. Tickets are $10. For more information and showtimes, visit theislandplayers.com.

Orchestrating Victory: Christos Vrionides and the J.A. Jones Shipyard Orchestra

A

mong the artifacts displayed at the World War II Home Front Museum on St. Simons Island is the booklet of music programs shown here. The programs were organized by Christos Vrionides, conductor of the orchestra of the J. A. Jones Shipyard in Brunswick, where Liberty Ships were built. The booklet is signed by Vrionides and dated June 14, 1944. Wartime brought the conductor, an authority on Byzantine music, to live and work in the relatively small community of Brunswick in the 1940s. Born on the Greek island of Crete in 1894, Vrionides immigrated to the United States in 1923 after graduating from the prestigious Athens Conservatory of Music. Residing in New York City, he studied at the Juilliard and Mannes

Schools of Music, before joining the faculty of the Union Theological Seminary as a professor of Byzantine music. Active in the Greek Orthodox Church, he organized an acclaimed Byzantine vocal quintet that performed in New York for a number of years. According to his obituary in The New York Times, during the Depression, Vrionides became involved in Works Progress Administration programs that benefited the music industry. Through Federal funding, he organized and conducted several chamber and symphony orchestras in the New York City area. When World War II brought Vrionides to the J.A. Jones Shipyard, he recruited unemployed professional musicians, who also took other

jobs at the shipyard, to form an orchestra as part of a government “Music in Industry” program to boost morale. He returned to New York after the war and took part in a music therapy project organized by a Veterans Administration Hospital on Long Island. Vrionides had a strong belief in the power of music, and art in general, to lift the spirits and unify humanity. In addition to serving as conductor of community orchestras on Long Island, he continued to teach music and compose until his death in 1961. Also shown is a picture of the shipyard orchestra in action with Vrionides conducting, taken by shipyard photographer Harold J. Terhune. Note that one of the musicians is wearing welding goggles!
