ecently, I read that a TV show host revealed that she’s been diagnosed with “Selfie Elbow.” Similar to tennis elbow, holding your arm outstretched at a strange angle while clicking away on your phone can cause damage. Who’d have thunk?! I take a selfie for my publisher’s letter photo each month and have found through the years that my problem is not my elbow, but rather my hair. It seems that over the years two things have happened to my hair. A) It’s turned gray, and B) there’s less of it! We all know that when taking a selfie it is important to hold the phone slightly above your face when taking the photo so as to eliminate the dreaded double chin that a straight on shot would reveal. The only problem with that angle is that it tends to expose the slightly thinning spot on the top of my head. What to do?! With the upcoming holidays and full calendar of approaching non-profit events, fundraisers, and other parties, I thought I’d supply you all with some selfie tricks of the trade. According to the “all knowing” internet, here are five surefire tricks to help you look thinner in photos:

1. Slightly tilt your head so that your chin is sticking out and your double chin isn’t obvious.

2. Don’t take photos from a low angle as it will make you look heavy. 3. Put your hands on your hip and let your arms out. It makes the arms appear slimmer and gives the torso more definition. 4. For group shots or full body shots, angle your body to a 3/4 turn, away from the lens. Then put one leg to your front side and slightly bend the leg. 5. Try one of the easy to use “skinny filter” apps that automatically manipulate photos to make their subject look thinner! If all else fails, wear a BIG cowboy hat!

he champagne will flow under the stars as the Victory Board presents the 48th Annual Gala “Gatsby in the Garden” benefiting the American Cancer Society on November 11th at six o’clock in the evening. The 2017 co-chairs hope to take you back in time to experience Gatsby’s extravagance for an entertaining party. Gatsby’s infinite hope has inspired us as we hope to inspire you during this evening of raising money to one day find a cure. The affair will take place at The Greenhouse, The Vine’s new event space on St. Simons Island. As guests step through the entrance, terrarium luminaries will help to guide them by candlelight into the garden of The Greenhouse. Each terrarium will be personalized with the names of loved ones and friends whose lives have been affected by cancer. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails as they amble through the silent auction offering objects and experiences that would impress any of Gatsby’s guests. Some of the items

they will be bidding on include beautifully crafted jewelry, a selection of local art, and a variety of sporting event packages. Chef Dave Snyder and his team from Halyards are joining Victory Board once again this year to provide a lavish spread of delicious food for the evening. The local fare will include a wide variety to satisfy every individual’s tastes. The Master of Ceremonies, former mayor, Bryan Thompson, will begin the live auction after dinner. A custom-made piece donated by Chadwick’s Jewelers and A Culinary Experience in Sea Island’s Wine Cellar for 10 guests are just two of the items which will entice guests to bid. There will also be a drawing for the very popular wine raffle. After dinner, the evening is not over because the grand finale will include live music and dancing featuring local favorites Mason Waters and the Groove Allstars. So, don your Roaring Twenties best and get ready to dance the Charleston! (continues)

oday, The Great Gatsby, is considered to be F. Scott Fitzgerald’s finest work. This cautionary tale about the American Dream painted a vivid picture of the Jazz Age and Roaring Twenties through the lavish lifestyle of mysterious young millionaire Jay Gatsby and his contemporaries in the fictional town of West Egg on Long Island in 1922. There has been a resurgence in interest in that

glittering era and the novel, including a 2013 movie remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but, it might surprise you to know that what is now considered an American literary classic did not always have such popularity. At the time of its release in 1925, Gatsby was not a commercial success like Fitzgerald’s previous books had been and critics called it a dud. Only 20,000 copies of the book were sold in the entire first year of publication. When Fitzgerald died of a heart attack at age 44 in 1940, the publisher still had copies of the book in its warehouse from a second printing of only 3,000 books, and many said the promise of a brilliant career he had shown was unrealized. However, in 1945, a wartime experiment unquestionably saved the book from obscurity and brought a popularity to Fitzgerald’s Great

American Novel that even he could never have dreamed. One year into the United States’ involvement in World War II, a group of book-loving authors, librarians, and publishers founded the Council on Books in Wartime, wanting to promote titles that would maintain the country’s morale. They contended books were “weapons in the war of ideas.” In February 1943, they undertook an ambitious effort to ship books to soldiers overseas. The program was perfectly timed with the newest innovation in publishing: paperbacks. Printed on magazine presses, it only cost 6 cents a copy to make a small book that fit neatly into a soldier’s fatigue pocket. The first batch of Armed Services Edition (ASE) books were shipped to U.S. Army and Navy troops that July. The result? Bored and homesick servicemen and women devoured the novels with the same enthusiasm as chocolate and pin-up girl photos. Many soldiers readily admitted these were the first books they had read outside of a classroom. Before the D-Day invasion, commanders made sure every soldier had a book before setting sail for Normandy. The council distributed 123 million free copies of 1,227 titles. The Great Gatsby was printed as an ASE in October 1945, with 155,000 copies distributed – dwarfing the novel’s numbers in two decades of sales. Although this was after Germany and Japan had surrendered, that timing only helped its popularity. More than 1.5 million servicemembers were still stationed overseas two years after the war ended, and they were more bored and homesick than ever. The sparkling opulence of Gatsby’s world and

sense of longing for something out of reach were a perfect escape and still a sense of connection for American soldiers. Because soldiers passed the ASE books around, it’s estimated that each copy was read about 7 times – meaning Fitzgerald’s Great American Novel was read by more than one million soldiers. That is an audience beyond his wildest dreams. The interest sparked by the military program spread to a wider, general audience. These new readers and the generations that have since followed recognize the value of Fitzgerald’s novel for what his contemporary critics could not have appreciated at the time – it colorfully captured that bygone Roaring Twenties era in way few others have ever done. By 1961, The Great Gatsby was being printed for high school classrooms. Today, the book is regarded as a classic in American literature and sells nearly a half million copies each year. Thanks to the men and women who served America in World War II, Gatsby earned its title of “Great.”

Tickets are $150 per person and are available online at acsvictoryboard.org or by calling 912.355.1378. The Keepsake Terrarium Luminaries can also be purchased for $25 in memory or in honor of someone impacted by cancer.

Heroes walk among us in the Golden Isles. hey are our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. They are our neighbors, our ministers, our service people, our retirees, our politicians and our friends. They don’t seek recognition, but statistics show that over 70,000 of these heroes live in our area of southeast Georgia. They share one important title: Veteran. On Saturday, November 11, the Golden Isles community will gather to celebrate the valor and bravery of its veterans. Veterans Day allows us to pause amidst the demands of our busy lives and remember all those who served honorably in both war and peace-time military. These brave individuals, both living and dead, protected our cherished rights and freedoms. Originally known as Armistice Day, the date was set aside to mark the day in 1918 when World War I hostilities ended. Greeted by rejoicing at home and abroad, the end of that war was solemnized by a ceremony at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of that bleak eleventh month. World War I is known as “The Great War” because humanity at the time could not imagine anything worse. One year later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as a day for all Americans to demonstrate “solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the (continues)

country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.” In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation that changed the name to Veterans Day. Dave Olender, chair of the Veterans Council of the Golden Isles, described the passion that veterans have for November 11. “Literally

expanded to include all veterans in both peace and war-time service. Since the American Revolution, nearly three million U.S. casualties have occurred. That number includes combat deaths, non-combat deaths, wounded and missing in action. Hundreds of thousands lost their lives in World War I and in subsequent conflicts to preserve our freedoms. So we are

every veteran I know holds this day sacred. It’s a day for all Americans to pause and think, but for veterans, it is also extremely personal. Those who served in combat all have a fellow service person they lost in battle. Stateside and peacetime veterans also have experienced loss, as age and time have caught up with us. It’s poignant and very emotional; we were brothers and sisters in arms serving our country. All of us need to stand up, salute the flag, and remember.” Over time, proposed legislation has attempted to alter Veterans Day and expand it to a three-day weekend. Veterans groups around the country lobby fiercely to halt that attempt. Olender explains veterans’ resistance to that change, “Expanded weekend holidays turn into a grill-fest and lose their meaning. The event on November 11 was originally tied to the end of ‘The Great War,’ World War I, but it has

adamant that the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month be preserved as a reminder of what veterans have sacrificed for all of us.” In keeping with that tradition, the local ceremony begins promptly at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, and is preceded by the official Veterans Day Parade. The parade will assemble at Mallory Park on St. Simons Island beginning at 9:45 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., the parade will march from Mallory Park, east on Mallory Street to Neptune Park and the Casino. Promptly at 11:00 a.m., the official ceremony will begin with the Presentation of Colors and National Anthem. The community is invited to help commemorate this special day. In particular, it is an excellent way for parents and grandparents to teach children the special honor of national service. (continues)

In honor of Veterans Day, we share the words to “Taps,” that haunting bugle call played by the United States Armed Forces at dusk and on Memorial Day, during flag ceremonies and at military funerals. Taps is both a call at the end of day and a tribute to those who gave the last full measure of devotion.

The service anthem portion of the Veterans Day program evokes strong emotion from veterans and civilians alike. Veterans from each branch of service stand while their familiar stirring music is played, many singing along. All five branches of service are included. Traditionally, anthems are played in the order of when the service branch was founded. The beginning stanzas are familiar to many. That sounds like another perfect combination! Country music singer/songwriter Jake Owen will be headlining the concert presented by Southeast Georgia Health System on Saturday, November 18 at McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport. The RCA Nashville recording artist released his fifth studio album, American Love, last year and it debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and #4 on the Billboard 200 chart. A Market Fair & Gifts of Hope

L

ord of Life Lutheran Church, at 2801 Frederica Road on St. Simons Island, will be hosting more than 30 vendors who sell quality handmade wares and one-ofa-kind gift items at their 9th annual Holiday Market Craft Fair on Saturday, December 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Some highlights include children’s book author Nancy Day who will be present signing her books, “Flavor of Georgia” winner Rockingham Pecans offering their fried pecans and candies, and The Blueberry Barn from Alma will be returning for a fourth year with a variety of blueberry products. The church will also host a bake sale, a used book sale, and will sell raffle tickets for prizes that include restaurant gift cards, specialty gift baskets, and a handcrafted woodwork piece donated by Paul Speich of Golden Isles Woodworkers. In addition, they will serve coffee, breakfast snacks, and lunch, and door prizes donated by vendors will be awarded each hour. Committee chairperson, Renée Evenson Balka says: “We are excited and proud that our fair has become well known in our community and that our neighbors throughout the Golden Isles look forward to it. We are also proud that every year we have returning vendors along

with new ones to showcase their handcrafted and specialty items. We always provide shoppers with a wide variety of gift ideas for the holidays. Santa Claus spends the day, so this is a great photo op for families. We are thankful for our many volunteers who work hard to make this an enjoyable day for everyone and we look forward to welcoming our visitors.” Pastor Bonnie Lanyi adds: “Funds are raised to help send our young people to camp and to care for people in our community who find themselves in dire need. This is one way we are able to reach out and serve those in need, and impact the community in positive ways.” Lord of Life Lutheran Church is also serving as a Central Drop-off for Operation Christmas Child again this year. This Samaritan’s Pursesupported holiday program that spreads the Gospel with shoebox gifts as an expression of God’s love to bring joy to children in need has distributed more than 146 million shoebox

gifts to children in more than 160 countries since its inception in 1993. This year, they are hoping to collect enough to reach another 12 million children. National Collection Week is November 12-20 and Lord of Life is asking people to drop off shoeboxes filled with small gift appropriate items and be designated for a girl or boy, ages 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Examples of things to include are books, stuffed animals, markers, crayons, drawing paper, puzzles, pajamas, hats, socks, toothbrushes (NO toothpaste, please), hairbrushes, soap and washcloth, shoes or flip-flops. The church has shoeboxes available or you can use your own. Drop-off times are Monday-Friday (11/13-17) 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m., Saturday (11/18) 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday (11/19) noon to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00-7:00 p.m., and Monday (11/20) 9:30-11:30 am. Holly Jolly Jekyll

T

he holidays on Jekyll Island are filled with cheer and Yuletide festivities. There are cottage tours, oceanfront “ice skating,” a contemporary Christmas classic movie, the annual tree lighting ceremony, fireworks, and even snow! In the wake of the cancellation of this year’s Shrimp and Grits Festival, Jekyll Island has created “Merry Shrimpmas” a Mash-Up Event that merges favorite elements of that event with the annual tree-lighting celebration. “We were all heartbroken,” said Meggan Hood, senior marketing director of the Jekyll Island Authority. “The Shrimp & Grits Festival is the island’s biggest event and it takes more than a year to plan, so simply moving it to another date was not an option. But no one felt that should keep this community down. That’s when we came up with the idea of a special, one-time-only festival that infuses some of the most-beloved elements from Shrimp & Grits into an expanded, two-day, holiday-themed event that includes

our popular tree-lighting activities. This will be a unique experience the public won’t want to miss.” Admission to the festival is free, but costs will vary for individual attractions, food and refreshments throughout the event. The Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival will return to the third weekend of September in 2018, Hood said. The “Merry Shrimpmas” fun will begin in the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District on Friday, November 24 from 2:008:00 p.m. and continue Saturday, November 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local restaurant vendors will be selling their shrimp & grits creations (with sample night on Friday night) and other offerings will be available from regional food trucks. The curated Artist Market will be set up on Pier Road and there will be live music on the Main Stage. Keep the youngest visitors entertained in the Kids Zone with bounce houses and other fun activities, mail letters to the North Pole for Santa, or join the big guy himself for Santa Storytime at the Skeet House. (There will be no individual Santa visits this year.) On Friday night, stay for a special holiday edition of Movies on the Green at The Village Green at Beach Village. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to watch the shenanigans of Buddy and his friends in Elf oceanside under the stars. Movie begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Saturday night, the lighting of the Jekyll Island Christmas tree will take place on the Main lawn, complete

with snow and a fireworks finale, as is tradition. Parking for the weekend event will be at Great Dunes Golf and Great Dunes Beach with buses shuttling regularly to the Historic District. “This is a huge opportunity to show how much these local businesses, from the restaurants, hotels and shops to the local artists and entertainers, mean to our community, at a time when we’ll all be getting into the holiday spirit,” Hood said. “And, after all we’ve been through, who wouldn’t like to begin the holidays with some delicious shrimp and grits and a grand tree lighting?” Everyone is encouraged to come out both Friday and Saturday, because there are so many activities for the whole family to enjoy. The tree lighting and fireworks are a beloved holiday tradition for many Golden Isles residents. The Jekyll Island Skating Village will be open for both days of the festival. The oceanfront “ice” skating arena is back (and bigger!) for the 2017-18 season. It will open on November 17 and run through January 7, 2018, closing on Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. Located on Beachview Drive, just south of the Holiday Inn Resort, Skating Village offers 30-minute sessions with skate rental included (continues)

for only $5 per person. You can also enjoy concessions and that beautiful panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean. As a special treat, Santa will make visits to Skating Village on Saturday, December 2 and Saturday, December 9 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Come out and skate with that jolly old soul! Another way to enjoy the season is with one of the Historic District Tours. “Holidays in History” tours will be held at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily November 25-December 31 (excluding Christmas Eve & Christmas Day). Venture inside the cottages of Jekyll Island’s National Historic Landmark District and learn their history as you see them decorated for the holidays in all their seasonal splendor. Tour prices are $16 for adults, $7 for children 7-17, and children 6 & under are admitted free of charge. Additionally, “Christmas Twilight Tours” will be held at 4:00 p.m. on December 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30. These special evening excursions highlight heart-warming holiday tales and the lights & decorations of the season on Jekyll Island. This Christmas celebration concludes with light refreshments and sunset views from one of our historic district cottages. Twilight tour prices are $20 for adults, $10 for children 7-15, and 44

children 6 & under are admitted free of charge. For reservations, call 912.635.4036. And no holiday season would be complete without a parade! The Holly Jolly Jekyll Parade will take place on Saturday, December 16 between 5:30-7:00 p.m. Golf carts will be decorated in their Christmas best and jingle all the way from Great Dunes Park to Beach Village. Participation is free, with all participating golf carts and Red Bugs registering at 4:30 p.m. in the Great Dunes Park parking lot. All entries must have lights to participate. The procession will depart at 5:30 p.m., travel along the oceanfront bike path, and conclude on the Village Green in Beach Village. Island guests and residents are encouraged to meet the parade in Beach Village to view the participants, enjoy live music, and do some Christmas shopping with the retailers in Beach Village. Santa’s elves are hard at work on this year’s prizes for the best-decorated golf carts, so deck your carts with boughs of holly, and give Santa’s sleigh a run for the money! For more information about any of these seasonal events, visit jekyllisland.com. Make a point to visit Holly Jolly Jekyll over the holidays – it really is the most wonderful time of the year! Jingle All the Way

O

n Saturday, December 9, those jingle-bells will be ringing again as festive runners make their way around the Jekyll Island for the CASA Jingle All the Way 5K and Fun Run. And, this year, there just might be a reindeer leading the way! (There will be a reindeer in attendance, we’re just not sure how fast he can run…or whether he flies!) Now that CASA has expanded their services to include Camden, they’re thrilled to share that Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be coming from Camden – a quick hop by sleigh – to visit and pose for photos with children of all ages. The 5K (which is chipped and timed) will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 10:00 a.m. Awards will be presented at 10:30 a.m. to

the team with the most members, most holiday spirit (team and individual), overall male and female finishers, overall masters male and female finishers, and the top three male and female finishers in each age group for the 5K. In addition, there is a $1,000 cash award to the school PTA with the most entrants pre-registered for either race. All proceeds from the race benefit the programs of CASA Glynn and their services provided in Camden as well. Come out with the whole family and get your jingle on! lynn Visual Arts will be hosting its 7th annual Mistletoe Market Holiday Festival at Postell Park in the Village on St. Simons Island on Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. This fine art and gift market has become a mainstay of the Golden Isles’ holiday festivities. “This year, we expect over 60 accomplished artists and artisans offering a wide variety of high quality artwork including two-dimensional art, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, photography, woodworking, baskets, fabric and mixed media.” said festival director Barb Scragg. “This show is a unique combination of fine art, wonderful gifts, good food, entertainment and family fun in a festive island holiday atmosphere. It is the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors alike to find that one-of-a-kind purchase or gift for the holiday season. As an added bonus, when you buy something handmade, purchased directly from the artist, you are supporting small business and our local community.” Scragg continued. There will be a Kid’s Creation Station to entertain the smallest artists with free holiday themed craft activities during the festival as well as live music from local

musicians. And when they say it’s fun for the whole family, that includes your canine companions! Bring your dog dressed in his or her holiday best to take part in the Holiday Hound Hike Pooch Parade on Saturday morning. It’s only $10 to participate. The line-up will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the parade following at 11:00 a.m. sharp – you won’t want to miss seeing these cuties in their Christmas attire! (Sometimes potbellied pigs dress up too!) For the third year, local knitters will be turning Postell Park into its own work of art through yarn bombing! Throughout the year, they have been working away and will reveal their beautiful work at the opening of the festival. The colorful decorations will remain in the park for the month of December. he Ritz Radio Theatre holiday productions always shine just as brightly as the star on the top of the tree. Featuring a talented cast of local actors, the shows are performed just as they would have been in the 1940s, as a radio drama in front of a live audience, with sound effects and period costumes. On December 8-10, they will be presenting A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens’ immortal tale of mean old miser Scrooge and his magical night discovering the true meaning of Christmas is a perennial audience favorite. The following weekend, December 15-17, Ritz Radio Theatre will bring to life the beloved story of Clarence the angel’s visit with George Bailey, a down-on-hisluck businessman who gets the unique chance to see what life would have been like if he hadn’t existed in It’s a Wonderful Life. All shows take place at The Historic Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. Advance tickets are $15 for members/$20 for non-members, $10 for senior (65+) members/$15 for senior non-members and day of show tickets are $5 more each ticket. The only drawback is that there are too many things to do.” “Every Menu Has a Story” dinners are held every other month as a collaboration between a chosen Member and the Culinary Staff at Marsh’s Edge. “Every Menu Has a Story’ encourages Members to share theme specific stories from their lives which subsequently inspire menus in their honor. Members share their stories and experiences as they pertain to a given theme. After reviewing the story with the Member, the Executive Chef interprets the story into a menu. By creating tasting notes

and demonstrating how the story inspired a particular dish, the process culminates in a dining event celebrating the story through the inspired menu. The culinary team at Marsh’s Edge is comprised of upscale dining chefs who constantly work to enhance the Member experience and push culinary boundaries. A restaurant approach to full-service dining emphasizes variety and quality. Daily specials and seemingly endless menu options are freshly crafted by the Executive Chef. A GLORIOUS GAME

M

y father’s paperback collection of B.C., MAD, Wizard of ID, and Peanuts, just to name a few, was regular reading for me thirty years ago. I loved B.C. in particular. The comic had recurring topics over the years, including golf. I remember one strip in which B.C. is teaching “The Cute Chick” (that was her name) how to play golf. At one point she says, “Let me get this straight, the less I hit the ball, the better I am doing.” “That’s right,” he admits. “Then why do it at all?” she asks? It’s a question that leaves him standing in the fairway as the sun goes down asking the same thing. The philosophy of golf is a bit counter-intuitive like that. I have those same moments of intrinsic strife myself, particularly after I’ve done something like hitting out of one greenside bunker into another … Why play indeed! I discovered golf in young adulthood and fell in love with it like so many do. I

60

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

didn’t do much with golf clubs or really learn to play until I was in my twenties. Access to the university course in seminary is what got me hooked, and now I simply spend most of my time wishing I had the time to play more often. I play very infrequently these days, which is ironic, given that we’re surrounded by golf courses. I feel like the guy shipwrecked on a deserted island, dying of thirst, and surrounded by water. Like most golfers, I tend to think I’m better than I am. I remember the good shots more than the bad ones. I can remember shots when I was playing by myself that I hit so well I looked around to see if anyone was there to see it. I also have a good golf story about the first tournament I played in a previous congregation. I was invited to play on a team with the local newspaper owners, members of the parish, as the fourth on their team. During the tournament, a four-man scramble, I played very well. I even chipped in from off the green on three separate holes. They thought I was a low handicap golfer, when in fact I was just a duffer who had an incredible day. It took a lot of rounds of bad golf later to convince some of them. I guess they thought I was setting them up to try to take their money. All of this is why November is one of my favorite months of the year. It’s RSM month, when the FedEx Cup comes to town for Davis Love’s tournament at Sea Island. It’s a local holiday. I was warned about the impact the tournament has on the island,

and the warnings were accurate. I have seen more of my congregation on the golf course at the RSM than I have on any given Sunday, and that includes Sunday at the tournament. It’s fun to go out after church on the final day and watch people sheepishly admit why they missed church. I get it. I’d be there Sunday morning too if I weren’t otherwise engaged! I don’t tell them that; I have a little fun watching them squirm. I also love it so much because I enjoy watching the professionals who can make something so hard look, generally, so easy. I am mesmerized by the highlight reel shots, and comforted by the shanks. But mostly I am in awe when I see what a master can do with a stick of metal and a little composite and rubber ball. At times, it’s nothing short of beautiful and magical. There are certainly some who cannot find such things in golf. They are the ones who ask, “Then why play at all?” Which is why they probably shouldn’t. For those who know golf, we know how hard it is, and how remarkable it is. It is indeed beautiful and magical – a challenge that must be met, perfection always out of reach. In fact, it’s an approach to life that is the opposite of, “why bother?” Golf can be time consuming and aggravating, but it’s worth it when it all comes together. It may not stretch back to the B.C. era, but it’s hooked us for at least 600 years and it’s still getting better. I wish I could say the same. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to the tournament. See you there!

Brunswick and the Golden Age of Silent Movies

W

prominent citizens. Fascinated by seeing themselves and their friends on screen, the townspeople watched the silent movie over and over, paying ten to fifteen cents each time. After splitting the profits with the city and the local theater, Norman turned the film over to the city.

In every town, Norman advertised for residents to audition. Using local talent rather than professional actors guaranteed the success of his venture. Norman also ensured that starring roles were given to

Norman never crossed over from silent films to “talkies.” His studio still stands in the historic Arlington district of Jacksonville. In 2014, a segment of PBS’s Antiques Roadshow featured the studio and encouraged towns where The Wrecker was filmed to search their archives for copies of the movie, as well as still photographs associated with the production. Norman made the movie, using three different titles, with both all white and all African American casts.

hen pioneer filmmaker Richard E. Norman of Jacksonville, Florida, acquired stock footage of a dramatic train wreck, he came up with an ingenious scheme. Starting in 1916, he travelled to as many as forty towns in the Midwest and South, including Brunswick, to shoot a film entitled The Wrecker, using the train wreck footage and the same screenplay in each location. The movie told the story of a love triangle and the competition between two railway companies for an important mail contract.

A collection of five photographs donated to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society in 1966 documents the 1916 production of The Wrecker filmed in Brunswick. The photograph shown here identifies the local talent as (left to right) Chief of Police Philip Burgess, William McKinnon, and Katherine Stiles.
