Be a Good Neighbor

Attention, golfers, get your 4-person golf scramble teams together now. The 2019 Coastal GA “On Par” to Cure Breast Cancer Golf and Social will be held at Brunswick Country Club on March 25-26. Here’s your chance to participate with a ladies, men’s, or mixed team, to make a donation for the silent auction, or to take advantage of sponsorship activities. Last year, with your support, they were able to meet their goal of $22,000 with all event proceeds going to Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia®. This tournament has increased its donations to fight breast cancer every year and is typically in the top 4 or 5 largest fundraisers for Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia. In the past, the regional Komen affiliate has provided grants to local programs including Southeast Georgia Health System’s “Mammograms in Motion” and the Coastal Community Health Services.

The cost to participate in the Tuesday, March 26 golf tournament and luncheon is $125 per golfer (due March 16) and includes admission to the Monday night social, golf, range balls, mulligan package, breakfast, cart snacks, lunch, tournament prizes, and a donation to Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia. The tournament is limited to 120 golfers. The silent auction, raffles and social featuring music, “lite bites,” and cash bar will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 25. $15 to attend the social if not participating in the golf scramble.

Please contact co-chairs Carol Sabo at 912.634.6867 or Nancy Fixx at 703.431.7561 with any questions, to take advantage of sponsorship opportunities, or to register. Come on out to Brunswick Country Club and scramble in support of a cure for breast cancer.

Pro-Scramble,

But Anti-Squirm

While we’re all for scrambling to help raise money to find a cure, we don’t like squirming with the discomfort sometimes that comes with mammograms. In fact, some women may avoid having mammograms because they find the procedure uncomfortable or painful. However, experts at Baylor Health Care System state that mammography is currently the most effective way of finding breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages, so the procedure is necessary. Here are some tips they offer to lessen discomfort: and bodysuits may not be the best bet for simple and quick removal.

The use of deodorant, oils, perfumes or powders should be avoided the week before a mammogram. These products can leave behind a residue that gets picked up by the X-rays, obscuring the mammogram and interfering with the results. This may mean you’d need another screening.

The week before your mammogram, you should also stay away from coffee, tea or caffeinated soft drinks. Caffeine can make breasts tender and lumpy, which may result in discomfort during the procedure. You should also avoid chocolate and over-the-counter pain relievers containing caffeine. (Check the label of any OTC medication you take.)

And something many women don’t think about: “Most women’s breasts are naturally more tender or slightly swollen during the week prior to their menstrual period,” Dr. Alicia Starr, medical director of the Women’s Imaging Center at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, noted. “Try to avoid scheduling your annual mammogram during this time.”

Follow these tips, share with your friends, and make sure you encourage them to follow a regular mammogram schedule too. It’s a good way to take care of yourself and each other.
