For color trends and inspiration, the world has been looking to Pantone for more than two decades. Annually Pantone chooses a Color of the Year which influences product development and purchasing decisions in everything from industrial design, fashion and home furnishings to product packaging and graphic design.
Their selection process involves a worldwide search for new color influences that involves thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. They examine lifestyles and factors such as fashion, films and broadcast works in production, travel destinations, art collections and new artists, and all areas of design. New textures, technology, materials and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms and significant upcoming events may all impact their choice. This year, it’s clear that our 2020 experiences played a major role in their choice of two colors for Pantone Color of the Year 2021.
PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is described as “a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.” PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray is “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation,” likening it to the color of pebbles on a beach and weathered natural elements that have withstood the test of time. The color experts say that these “two independent colors that highlight how different elements come together to support one another best express the mood for Pantone Color of the Year 2021.”
They call the union of the colors “practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic.” This is a message of strength and positivity, a sunny, friendly, happiness supported by thoughtful fortitude. They explain the color combination is “aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.” Illuminating fortifies the spirit with energy, clarity, and vitality, while Ultimate Gray quietly assures, invoking feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience. Pantone calls this a “combination of color whose ties to insight, innovation and intuition, and respect for wisdom, experience, and intelligence inspires regeneration, pressing us forward toward new ways of thinking and concepts.” Absolutely perfect for 2021!
