Back Then …
S
ummer on St. Simons Island is the best, isn’t it? And if you’re a kid, it’s somehow even BETTER! I remember, as a kid back in the early 70s, I’d ride my bike everywhere! How in the HECK did we ride our bikes ALL over the island in 98-degree heat?! Back then, your mom would go into Roberta’s women’s store and tell you to stay in the car because she didn’t want you to knock anything over. You’d sit there for 20 minutes trying not to get burned by the puke green “pleather” vinyl seating in the Ford Country Squire station wagon.
On left, David looks eager and ready to spend his allowance.
Yes, times are different these days. But … Back then, your mom would give you $5 and drop you off at the Casino in the village in the morning (NO, it wasn’t an actual gambling casino!) and wouldn’t come back until 6:00 p.m. You could swim in the pool, bowl at the bowling alley, and roller skate at the skating rink. Back then, you would swim out to the sandbar behind The King & Prince hotel – until you went to see Jaws in 1975 and then you NEVER swam out to the sandbar again!

Back then, you walked to your friend’s house if they lived in your neighborhood. If they didn’t
live in your neighborhood, you’d ask your mom to drive you. Your mom would tell you, “Ride your bike.” Back then, if you wanted an ice cream cone or a cheeseburger from the Tastee Freeze, you had to earn money by mowing lawns for a dollar. Nowadays, instead of sitting on scorching car seats in the back of a hot Ford Country Squire station wagon, kids just Uber to Frosty’s to get their ice cream and cheeseburgers, and use ApplePay on their iPhones. I think I’ll ride my bike to Roberta’s!

ugust means school is back in session for the kids. Now it’s Mom’s turn to play! And while many people are probably saying “Staycation,” we think that term is overused. Sure, we all know a vacation at home is fun, but we propose something a little different. Getting our inspiration from all the kids’ summer camps we’ve seen, we think it’s time for moms to have a day camp of their own!
A day camp for moms? It’s not such a strange idea. Gather a small group of moms that you meet when dropping your precious angels off at school or moms you know in your neighborhood. Follow our five-day blueprint of activities for fun ways to refresh your mind, body, and soul for the back-to-school season. Heck, you can even do it again in a month or two and make it a regular thing! (continues)

Inspire Your Dreams
Day
1
Everyone knows the first day of camp is all about getting to know your fellow campers.
E
ven if you know all the ladies assembled, it’s nice to have a day to form a closer bond and become better acquainted. Since you won’t be having to share a cabin, we can skip the team-building exercises, and we’re not big fans of around-thecircle introductions. Instead, get everybody together over coffee and create “vision boards” or “dream boards.” Use some foam board or cardboard and photos from magazines (or bring your tablets and log-on to Pinterest) to create a collage of images and quotes to inspire and illustrate your dreams and future goals. Whether it’s losing weight, training for a 10K, or saving up for a long desired trip, make a visual reminder of what you want to accomplish. This is a fantastic way for everyone to get to know each other and definitely beats, “Hi, I’m Jenny. I’ve lived here for 12 years. I have 6 year-old twins, Bobby and Jess, and my favorite show is ‘America’s Got Talent.’” If you share your goals, you’ll also find that your fellow moms can serve as a great support system and accountability partners.
guide, French language books, or that perfect travel dress. For the home upgrade project, maybe a new fixture or a gallon of paint to get you started. For the gym commitment or 10K training, a spiffy new pair of running shoes is an excellent start. Maybe for a stay-at-home mom who now has kids in school for the first time just getting out of those yoga pants and back into a stylish “work day” outfit is a step toward this new stage of life or a new job. Once you’ve picked the stores, hop in an SUV or two and head out to do your shopping. Shopping with friends is always more fun and maybe you’ll get some helpful ideas from each other. The steps you take to achieve your goal might inspire someone else’s dreams or encourage them not to give up.

Take it one step further with a shopping trip. Plan the trip with each mom choosing a store where they can purchase something needed to accomplish their goal or that represents the end result. For the dream trip to France, perhaps a Paris travel

Nourish Your Body

On Day Two, focus on food.

emember that it’s important to nourish your body. Exchange your favorite recipes or get together to do some cooking, canning, or meal prep in somebody’s kitchen. If you’re feeling truly adventurous, hire a local chef to hold a cooking class in your home. If you don’t think your kitchen is suitable, check with Simmer & Soak to see if they have any upcoming cooking classes or talk to them about scheduling one in their kitchen. You can sign up for their newsletter to stay informed at simmerandsoak.com. Another fabulous place to try out your culinary chops or get creative with your cooking skills is Golden Isles Olive Oil Wine Bar and Gourmet Market. Donna McPherson is an unabashed foodie and has brought in talented chefs and culinary experts to teach everything from creating the perfect cheese and charcuterie tray to crockpot cooking to making pickles and French macarons. There’s a Fall Fruit Harvest Cooking class scheduled in September and the calendar will soon fill with other offerings too. GIOO also presents “Ladies Who Lunch” gatherings

at various local restaurants, so if you’d rather simply eat the handiwork of others, that’s perfectly fine too. See what culinary events might interest you at goldenislesoliveoil.com. You could also use this day to indulge in a ladies’ lunch out at a local eatery. There’s no shortage of restaurants serving delicious food in the Golden Isles. As you can see, Sea Palms was eager to share dishes from their newly revamped menu and we were all delighted to try them. Risotto, duck, trout, salmon, and beef were all tasty! You can opt for a casual lunch out by the pool or throw on a little black dress and make it a fancier affair dining inside. The restaurant now also serves a Southern Sunday Buffet that includes mouthwatering fried chicken, catch of the day, chicken and dumplings, traditional sides like macaroni and cheese, squash casserole, collard greens, and more. Engage Your Mind
Day
3
On Day Three, it’s time to stimulate your brain. Learn something new. Open up your mind.
T
here are so many ways to do this. Start your own mini book club by grabbing the best-seller list or a list of suggested summer reads, choose one of those books to read and discuss together. Darryl and Anne Peck at the new Righton Books in Redfern Village are happy to make suggestions for you and can provide the books. If you haven’t stopped in to check out St. Simons Island’s newest bookstore yet, you definitely should! Beyond books, they have tea, chocolate, pencils, writing journals, and things that most bibliophiles (and nerds) adore. Their huge cookbook selection will delight culinary explorers and chefs alike. The children’s section has more than enough to engage our littlest readers and the ones who still snuggle in our laps as we read to them. Obviously if this is your first “camp” session you wouldn’t have had time to read a book to discuss as a group, so use this time to talk about books you’ve read recently and would recommend. If you all participated in one of the Big Read programs, share your thoughts about that book, or discuss a well-known clas-
sic or popular title like To Kill a Mockingbird, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, or The Help. Compare the book version versus movie versions of well-known favorites. Add mimosas to the mix, if you’d like!
and-play sessions. Glynn Visual Arts and the Pottery Studio also offers group activities and studio time and may be able to host private group events with a little pre-planning.
Of course, a book club discussion isn’t an all day thing (At least for most people!), so this is also a good day to schedule a paint-and-play class or a pottery workshop. Get creative together. Don’t be afraid to try something you’ve never done. Picking up a paintbrush and putting something on canvas with a group of friends is such a fun experience. The only rule here is that you leave your ego at the door. It’s not about the result on the canvas or the wheel, it’s about the experience you have exploring your artistic side with other women who have the courage to do the same. There are several local art studios offering paint-

t’s important to remember that pampering yourself is not something selfish and decadently indulgent, it’s an important way to equip our body and mind to fight against outside stressors. We are more resilient and better able to handle stress when we are feeling our best both physically and emotionally. A massage, foot soak, and other forms of pampering revitalize you inside and out. Triggering the body’s relaxation response can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health. Most of us would rather spend our money on time with a massage therapist than paying for doctor’s visits and blood pressure medications. Having a well-cared-for body also contributes to long-term feelings of wellbeing, by making you feel good about yourself and your life, and it also conveys to others that you value yourself. Self-care also helps you be a better caregiver. People who neglect their own needs and forget to nurture themselves are at risk for deeper levels of unhappiness, low self-esteem, and feelings of resentment. Caretakers who don’t include self-care in their regular routine can get burnt out on all the giving, making it more difficult to care for the others who depend on them. So when you treat yourself with a pampering session, you’re not only doing it for you—you’re doing it for them. So splurge and schedule a group mani-pedi and some massage sessions. Island Day Spa offers a full range of spa treatments ranging from a variety of massage options, body treatments with sugar scrubs and body wraps to manicures
and pedicures and salon services. There’s even a “Mom’s Day Out Package” that includes a 60 minute massage (or prenatal), Signature Facial, Essential Pedicure, wash and blow out. You can now book appointments online through their website at theislanddayspa.com. Another way to pamper yourself is to simply relax by the pool or spend the day at the beach.
Whether you grab a poolside cabana or set up a tent in the sand, make sure you have some shade available and a handy stash of water or cold beverages to stay hydrated. Frozen grapes and chunks of watermelon are perfect snacks. Whether you’re lounging on a pool float and catching up on island happenings or seeing if you still have the ability to build a sandcastle, this is girl-time well-spent!

Make Time to Play

The last day of Moms Day Camp is play time! Remember that life should always include fun and games.
U

Scrabble can tell you a lot about them. Just don’t go home plotting revenge for those Draw 4 cards! Learn to play bridge or bunco. Pictionary is always good for a laugh too! Jenga drinking games and beer pong are probably better left to weekends when alternate childcare is available, but boys aren’t the only ones allowed to have fun. Heck, you can even learn to shoot or take a quick
jaunt out to do some fishing for the day. Head back to the beach again, but this time with paddle boards, or take a kayak tour through the marshes. If it’s a rainy day and you’re tired of board games, head to the movies. Find a good comedy and kick back with some popcorn. Laughter is good for your soul.

A little friendly competition at The Strike Zone or seeing who gets the highest score at Pinball Palace can take you outside your typical routine and remind you to indulge in some fun. Another option is to pull out the board games and cards. The way somebody plays Uno or 30

Ice Cream S
ummer just wouldn’t be summer without ice cream and choices go far beyond our classic vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. There’s not only a mind boggling array of flavors, we also have choices like handscooped or soft-serve, gelato, frozen yogurt and frozen custard. We thought we’d delve a little deeper into the deliciousness to learn more about the differences. While ice cream’s origins are a bit murky, it is well established that by the 17th century the frozen delicacy was available to the public throughout Italy, England, and France. Ice cream made its way to the New World by the 1700s, with the first known advertisement for it being an announcement in the New York Gazette dated May 12, 1777 by confectioner Philip Lenzi stating that ice cream was available “almost every day.” But until 1800, ice cream was a rare and exotic dessert enjoyed mostly by the elite. The invention of insulated ice houses
and other technological innovations dramatically grew and changed the ice cream industry and made it widely accessible to the general public. Today’s total annual frozen dairy production in the U.S. exceeds 1.6 billion gallons and has some standards set by the FDA. For a frozen dairy product to be labeled ice cream, it must contain no less than 10% milk fat and must weigh no less than 4.5 lbs. per gallon. This weight regulation is called the “overrun” and refers to the amount of air whipped into the product. Products labeled “frozen dairy dessert” generally contain milk and other ingredients, but may be filled with more air or otherwise fall short of the FDA’s requirements. Frozen custard is also made with a foundation of milk, cream, and sugar, but if it contains more than 1.4 percent egg yolks, then it can be called frozen custard, according to the FDA. Other terms for the more eggy frozen delicacy are French ice cream or French custard ice cream. (continues)

Gelato is the Italian version of our beloved frozen dessert that you now see on freezer shelves. Gelato contains less butterfat than ice cream (around 4% to 9%) and has less air whipped into it, giving it a creamier, smooth and more spreadable texture. Because gelato is generally served at a higher temperature, it also provides a greater flavor experience. The soft-serve that’s twisted into a cone or cup at “soda fountain” style ice cream shops and custard stands, is dispensed directly from a freezer in a semi-firm state. Since it is never packaged and frozen, it is not regulated by any FDA standards. Soft serve typically has less milk fat than ice cream and is constantly churned to introduce air, resulting in a soft, fluffier texture. Mixes vary by region or restaurant preference with some containing egg yolks, more like frozen custard, while others are simply a fluffier version of ice cream. Like gelato, it is served at a higher temperature than packaged ice cream. Frozen yogurt (unlike yogurt) is also not regulated by the FDA. This frozen dessert, made with milk solids, milk fat, yogurt culture and sweetener, is lower in fat than ice cream, and is generally more tart. It is sold packaged and frozen and dispensed from freezers like soft-serve. What we know is that whether it’s hand-scooped into a cone, swirled in a cup, or consumed
directly with a spoon from a carton stashed in your freezer, ice cream known by any of these names is a summertime favorite. Thankfully, we have many options from which to choose readily available here. For a real treat, make your own ice cream at home using the seasonal
deliciousness of fresh fruit. We recommend using the Georgia Peach Stand peaches from Pearson Farm. Here’s an easy recipe that doesn’t require an ice cream machine or any churning. The hardest thing about it is being patient enough to wait for it to freeze so you can eat it!
No-Churn Fresh Peach Ice Cream INGREDIENTS

F
or many people, including me, visiting Alaska is a bucket list item. This June, I was able to scratch it off my list as I joined friends to set sail on an Alaskan cruise. I discovered that this incredible place is everything you (and I) dreamed it would be.
My trip began with a couple days in Seattle. Luckily for me, one of my best friends from Glynn Academy, Charlie Lipthratt, lives there. I had the perfect guide! At the top of my list of things to do was to see the Chihuly Garden and (continues)

Glass exhibit and the Space Needle. Dale Chihuly’s glass art is well-known worldwide. His pieces push the boundaries of contemporary art. He has developed many innovative ways to shape, color, and texturize glass to achieve his artistic vision. His Macchia bowls can be as much as four feet in diameter and blend colors in unusual and beautiful ways. Each bowl is trimmed in glass of a contrasting color that is so fine you think it is paint. The Seaforms use optic molds to strengthen the glass and give it a ribbed effect. The Sealife is exquisite with amazing attention to detail. Chandeliers, flowers, balls, globes, statues. You could spend days there and never get tired of looking at his beautiful work. The exhibit is at the base of the Space Needle, which is not only very convenient, it makes for wonderful pictures as the Space Needle reflection can be seen in the beautiful glass. Another experience not to be missed in Seattle is Pike’s Market. This popular stop is a wonderful mixture of farmers and fish markets, craft show, restaurants and flower shop. Charlie also took me on a kayak tour of Lake Union where parts of Sleepless in Seattle were filmed. The houseboat they used is still there! He showed me around the beautiful downtown with its amazing architecture. We ate in fabulous restaurants, and took a tour of underground Seattle that was both interesting and hilarious. Just ask someone from Seattle about the Sewing Machine Tax from the late 1800’s. I hated to leave the “Emerald City” but “The Last Frontier” awaited.
The Norwegian Cruise Line’s Bliss was home for the next seven days with Leigh Langford as my cabin mate. We spent the first day at sea. Sitting on the balcony watching the sun rise over snow-covered mountains emerging from the gorgeous deep blue water was the most relaxing thing we have done in years. Leigh

said, “The views are absolutely breathtaking!” That is where we spent most of the time on the cruise. We simply couldn’t get enough of that glorious view. We never will.
Next stop was Skagway, where I spent the morning on the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad. The breathtaking scenery and interesting history make this a must on any trip to Alaska. The White Pass & Yukon Route climbs from sea level in Skagway to 3,000 feet in just 20 miles. It was completed when the Gold Rush was in full swing. It was just three men finding gold in Klondike that began the entire Yukon Gold Rush. Although the newspapers reported that they came back with “stacks of yellow metal,” the gold they found barely filled the cartridge of a Winchester rifle. Tens of thousands of men and women (continues)
Juneau was the first stop of the cruise. A whale watching tour in Barlow Cove was the excursion for the day. We saw a mother humpback whale that we were told was named Flame with her precious baby Bunsen. As our guide said, “that’s what happens when you let a bunch of science geeks name the whales!” Flame and Bunsen had just arrived after their eight week trip north from Hawaii. Humpbacks are 45-50

made the treacherous 600 mile journey in search of gold. Twelve of them got rich. Only four hundred of them actually found gold. After a delicious lunch and a little time wandering through the quaint town of Skagway, Leigh and I were off to our next adventure. We donned our protective suits that are reminiscent of the space suits worn in the movie Armageddon and boarded our oceanraft for a high speed thrill ride with stops to see mountain goats and eagles and beautiful waterfalls. Why protective suits? It was approximately 38 degrees with the water temperature only about two degrees warmer than that. Quite a change from the 105 degree heat index we left at home. Our next stop was Ketchikan, a wonderfully picturesque town. Here, we set out in search of Dungeness crabs. Lynne Henry, Claudia Schneider, and her son, Mason, joined us for this fun excursion. Not only did we find the crabs, we also ate them in large quantities! Dungeness crabs are like bigger versions of our local blue crabs and are equally delicious. On the crab hunt we saw precious otters, noble eagles and dozens of sea lions lazing in the sun. We also saw the ruins of the factory where Libby’s canned salmon. The factory closed due to a salmon war and overfishing that almost wiped out the salmon population.
The ship spent a full day going through Glacier Bay. There were magnificent mountains of ice that are thousands of years old at every turn. You can see the scratches on the mountains made by the glaciers as they pushed their way to their destination. One of the smaller glaciers was 28 stories tall. The colors were overwhelming: the light green of the water, the black of the mountains, the blue of the sky, the white of the snow, the dark green of the Sitka spruces, and the indescribable blue of the glaciers. They all combined to present a picture no camera or artist can duplicate. As Mason summed it up well, “The scenery itself speaks of God’s glory, and traveling through the area gave me a better appreciation for the earth as a whole.” Talking with the tour guides and locals, we learned so many interesting things. For instance, less than 10 percent of the seasonal workforce are locals. Alaska does not have a large enough population to handle the tourist season, so thousands of young adults from all over spend their summers working there. From
what they told us, it’s an extremely lucrative summer job, and housing is even included. Best of all, they get to spend the summer in Alaska. We met people from Texas, Louisiana, California, Montana, New York, Oregon, Washington and more. Another crazy fact: each cruise port gets 100,000 tourists per month from the cruise ships during their season, which runs from April through September. And we think GA/FL weekend on the island is bad! Claudia reflected on the trip, “I think my biggest take away was having the chance to drink in more examples of the diversity of our country. The landscape was so different and beautiful! I think it made me appreciate our corner of the country through a different lens.” Even the air is different there. Lynne remarked on that, saying, “I loved the clean, crisp air in Alaska. I couldn’t fill my lungs with enough of it!” I think it’s safe to say we would all jump at the chance to go back again. So, if you are thinking about crossing Alaska off your bucket list, do it! Now is a great time to start planning for next summer. It’s a trip you’ll never forget.

A Chat with the New Chamber President We recently visited with the new BrunswickGolden Isles Chamber of Commerce president and chief executive officer Ralph Staffins to discuss his new position and some of the strides he has already taken in the short time he has been at the job.
S
taffins comes to us with quite of bit of experience having served as president and chief executive officer of the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce in Covington, Georgia, located about 30 miles east of Atlanta. He led the chamber of commerce, economic development office, main street program and tourism in Newton County since 2015. They received a 4-Star Certification by the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation in 2018, under Staffins’ guidance. This is quite is distinction, as one of the highest des-

ignations afforded to chambers of commerce, only the top three percent of chambers in the country have such a designation. Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia is where Ralph earned his Bachelor of Science in political science in 2006 and Master of Public Administration in 2008. He was executive director of Forward McDuffie in Thomson, Georgia and also served as economic development director for Wilkinson County, Georgia, prior to his time in Covington. “To have the opportunity to lead the BrunswickGolden Isles Chamber and grow in my profession is exciting,” says Staffins. “Following in the footsteps of a chamber icon like Woody Woodside is going to be challenging. I look forward to becoming a part of the team that continues building a strong business community.” Ralph currently serves as vice chair of the Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, and will chair that organization in 2020-2021. He is also a Certified Economic Development Professional as designated by the International Economic Development Council, Georgia Certified Chamber Executive, graduate of Leadership Georgia, graduate of Georgia Academy of Economic
Development, and board member of the Newton County Industrial Development Authority.
to point out that while work is important, family and church play a huge part of his life. His wife Rachel and children Evelyn (7), Katherine (5), and Calvin (9 months) are in the process of moving to the Golden Isles.
Staffins hit the ground running with the chamber’s new campaign of meeting 100 businesses in 100 days. Actually, he met with 150 members in one month. He considers himself an “agent of change” and his goal is to bring businesses and organizations to the table together and to lead with community partners. He also wants to personally get to know the chamber members, be as visible as can be, and is now conducting “listening sessions’ to collect information from community members, the chamber board and staff. Ralph says that he is ready to be held accountable to the chamber staff, board and community and plans on making a positive impact to the community. He has already started getting the word out because since coming to the chamber, his social media presence has increased by a whopping 231%!
Although this is the fourth chamber that Ralph has been a part of, he tells us the folks in the Golden Isles have been the most welcoming and he is really looking forward to living here. One of the major reasons he chose to take the job here is the quality of life in the Golden Isles and he is looking forward to raising his family surrounded by the natural beauty found here. He doesn’t consider this a career move as much as a “move for life.”
Ralph is working together with Ryan Moore of the Brunswick & Glynn County Development Authority and Scott McQuade of the Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau, and has started having routine meetings with them. He tells us that partnering with these gentlemen is more than sharing office space. Between the three of their organizations, they pretty much cover everything about working, living and playing in the Golden Isles.
Staffins love of business comes to him naturally. Both his grandparents and parents were small business owners. Ralph explained, “small business is in my blood and is the backbone of any community.” Ralph was also quick
We enjoyed our time speaking with Ralph and look forward to more conversations and seeing the changes he will bring to our area. For more information about the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, visit brunswickgoldenisleschamber.com.

Give Me the Beat b y M i k e Ta y l o r , G o l f I n s t r u c t o r
“Drive for show. Putt for Dough!”
W
e have all heard this saying, but what happens when we struggle with the speed of our putts? We either hit what we think is a good putt right in the middle of the cup only for it to come up two rolls short of going in or we putt it four feet past the hole and miss the four footer and three putt. Putting is an area of the game we can all improve with a little practice that yields fast results and translate to lower scores. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or Tour player, a consistent length and tempo of the putting stroke can help you control distance. Common putting stroke faults are either a long backswing with a short through swing or a short backswing with a long follow through. Both faults cause inconsistencies in tempo and, therefore, poor distance control. The answer to these problems can be found on your phone. I recommend downloading a free metronome app. Set the metronome to 76 beats per minute as a starting point. Putt a few balls to a hole from 20 feet, matching the tempo of the metronome. If your putts consistently come
up short of the hole, change the setting to 74 beats per minute. If your putts are too far past the hole, change the setting to 78 beats per minute. Keep doing this until you find a setting that allows you to hit the putt the correct distance. Once you have found your number, that will be the tempo you should use on all putts of any length. The length of the stroke will vary but the tempo will stay the same. “March to the beat of a different drum” and improve your putting. For a video putting drill that will help you get the ball to the hole and avoid 3 putts, email mikegolfpro@comcast.net. Mike Taylor has been teaching golf since 1989. He has coached PGA Tour players to 10 victories on the PGA Tour. Past students include Lucas Glover, Kyle Stanley, Boo Weekley, Harris English, Hudson Swafford, and Brian Harmon, among others. A Valiant Attempt Becomes an Enduring Mystery
N
inety-two years ago, on August 25, 1927, brave young aviator Paul Redfern took off in his Stinson-Detroiter monoplane Port of Brunswick from Sea Island beach in an attempt to fly non-stop to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Had he succeeded, he would have broken Charles Lindbergh’s distance record by 1,000 miles. His solo flight time would have been more than 50 hours compared with Lindbergh’s 33.5. Newspapers across America covered the valiant attempt, stating that experts doubted Redfern was carrying enough fuel to reach his destination. On August 26, the Savannah Morning News reported that U.S. Navy weather officials felt success would be “nothing short of a miracle.” At no time would Redfern receive favorable winds, and he would fly in total darkness for two nights, as there would be no moon.
For navigation, Redfern relied on compasses and a map. He did not have a radio. To survive a forced landing at sea or on land, he carried a rubber raft, a rifle, flare guns, a portable distilling apparatus for water, fish hooks, a knife, matches, a surgical kit, medicine, and mosquito netting. He also took rations for ten days, which included twenty chicken, ham, and cheese sandwiches, as well as malted milk tablets, raisins, dates, nuts, chocolate, and beef bouillon cubes. For beverages, he had water and coffee. With great optimism, Redfern proclaimed, “If I am forced down in the Amazon valley, I believe I can live almost indefinitely with what equipment I am carrying …. With my collapsible rifle, which also shoots .410 shotgun shells, I can bring down enough small game to satisfy my needs for quite a period.” (The Brunswick News, August 25) Others
did not share his optimism. The Tallahassee Daily Democrat on August 27 described the dangers of the Amazon jungle, such as “writhing giant snakes” and “hordes of insects and tiny reptiles whose sting or bite is death-dealing.” By the afternoon of August 27, no sightings of Redfern had been reported along his route over Brazil. He and his plane had disappeared, and despite numerous rescue expeditions to the jungles of South America over the next decade, no trace was ever found. This month’s images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives show 25-year-old Paul Redfern (top, right) with Paul Varner, chairman of the flight committee, and Redfern’s plane taking off from Sea Island beach.
Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station.
