PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A

s the holidays approach, you’ll probably end up watching a bunch of movies like Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone, Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation or my two favorites, It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story. But since we have all been sitting inside and binge-watching TV for the last 8 months, I thought you might need a little extra inspiration beyond the silver screen to get you in the holiday spirit. So, in this year of social distancing, here are some Christmas quotes to share with friends and family.

Be sure to stop into Taylor House Interiors and see all the fabulous holiday decorations

“Christmas is like candy; it slowly melts in

“Want to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the

making you wish it could last forever.”

“Christmas isn’t a season. It’s a feeling.” – Edna Ferber

“Gifts of time and love are surely the basic “The way you spend Christmas is far more

ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.” – Peg Bracken

important than how much.” – Henry David Thoreau

Merry Christmas Happy New Year

“One of the most glorious messes in the “The joy of brightening other lives becomes for us the magic of the holidays.” – W.C. Jones “If you want to experience the true meaning of Christmas, give something to someone who can offer nothing in return.”

– Andy Rooney

Faith makes all things possible. Hope makes all things work. Love makes all things beautiful. May you have all three this Christmas!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night! 44

Donner, Blitzen & A Literary Mystery

CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE

In 1844, the poem was included in Moore’s anthology, Poems.

ou’ve just read Clement Clarke Moore’s classic poem, but how well do we really know it? Donner and Blitzen originally had different names! And there’s a persuasive argument that Clement Clarke Moore may not have penned the poem at all.

So, what’s the dispute? The family of poet Henry Livingston, Jr. claimed that he had been reciting the tale of St. Nick’s visit to them as far back as 1807. Recollections by multiple family members and a neighbor are consistent. They also allegedly possessed a dated, handwritten copy of the original poem with revisions and scratch marks throughout — but it was lost in a house fire. So, without that, why is their argument persuasive? Here’s where the reindeer come in.

Fact: the earliest known printed appearance of the holiday poem was in the upstate New York newspaper, Troy Sentinel, on December 23, 1823 and it was not credited to any author. As the story goes, Moore had written the poem for his children and, without his knowledge, a housekeeper sent it to the newspaper. It was first attributed to Moore in The New York Book of Poetry, a 1837 book edited by Moore’s friend Charles Fenno Hoffman.

In the 1823 printing, the names of Santa’s reindeer were “Dunder and Blixem,” Dutch words for “thunder and lightning.” Livingston’s mother was Dutch. However, that term was a popular expletive among New York’s Dutch-American inhabitants at that time and Moore may have been familiar with it, especially since he was good friends with author Washington Irving, who was well-versed in Dutch culture and traditions in NY. Yet, if you

Y

follow the story of the names, you’ll find they were changed to “Donner and Blitzen” in the signed, handwritten copy of the poem that Moore donated to the New HENRY LIVINGSTON, JR. York Historical Society approximately 40 years later. Figuring out how that change was made does seem to indicate that Moore did have some ownership. In the 1837 printing that first named Moore the author, the reindeer names were “Donder and Blitzen,” changed in apparent attempt to fix the rhyme scheme. It adopts “Blitzen,” the German word for lightning. These names are also used in Moore’s 1844 anthology. It seems that the final reindeer name change to “Donner and Blitzen” occurred in 1906, and was most likely a revision made for the purpose of consistency by the editor, when reprinted in The New York Times. It matched “Donner,” the German word for thunder, with its German linguistic counterpart. Makes sense, right? Professors have also weighed in, analyzing the poem and comparing it to other works by both authors. Their conclusions: the poem matches Livingston’s style of writing. If Moore wrote it, it was a departure for him. As it stands, without clear evidence to dispute the ownership of the poem Moore claimed as his own, the literary attribution stands. We’ll dash away and let you draw your own conclusions.

What cannot be disputed is the fact that the Elegant Island Living family wishes you and yours a very Merry Christmas. And to all a good night! 50

When we set about creating a classic Christmas card inspired scene complete with vintage red truck, handsome hound, poinsettias, evergreens, and brightly wrapped gifts, we thought The Farm at Oatland would make the perfect setting. And once we had the stage set, it was an ideal opportunity to show off seasonal styles for the family from our local advertisers. The Cason, Maichle and Hopkins families were gracious enough to model winter clothes on a warm day. As for holiday magic, we found it when we visited Santa in his workshop a couple years ago, but this time when we brought Christmas to The Farm, the “reindeer found us! See page 60 to see that and other behind the scenes fun.

A RARE GEM

After nearly 40 years in the jewelry business, it’s safe to say that Zoe Herrington has the experience to be considered a qualified expert in jewelry. A Golden Isles native, Herrington, is the owner of Noble House Jewelry on St. Simons Island. As a child, she was fortunate to travel to many exotic places as the daughter of a military man. Zoe told EIL that she learned the fine art of negotiation by going to markets in Turkey with her housekeeper/nanny. “Those were some of my most joyous moments, because we traveled to market by a horse and carriage, which was the main mode of transportation back then.” In addition to cherished memories, it was there that seeds of wisdom were sown and have flourished into a business built on offering the highest quality jewelry with unique pieces and competitive prices.

A

s an adult, Herrington settled outside of Kansas City, and opened her first jewelry store in 1981. Zoe says, “I worked by appointment for ten years before opening to the public. I could not handle 7 days a week, 12 hours plus a day.” That initial location has expanded to a 12,000 square foot store and is now managed by her son Doug Brooks. Tony Privitera, the store’s landlord recalls the beginning, “I met Zoe almost 30 years ago, and on that day, I met one of the best marketers and negotiators in my life. We have been great business partners and friends.” He adds, “Never had anyone in our market advertised using all forms of marketing, everything from newspaper, TV, and especially the radio. The ads were unbelievable! Zoe has done a fantastic job of giving people great quality pieces, unusual and one of kind pieces at a reduced price. If she says she is going to do something she does it! It has been an absolute pleasure being the 88

landlord of Noble House Jewelry and I hope to continue for years to come.” Herrington has a keen business sense and is passionate about jewelry. When asked where that originated, Zoe again referred to her formative years in Turkey. As she was growing up, she says her world-traveling father would send her to the jewelry store to choose a memorable gift, reminding her that jewelry is a timeless, precious item. This taught her to choose top quality and negotiate fiercely. Although many times she was tempted to buy the first item she fell in love with, Zoe said she learned to persist in searching for just the right piece at the right price.

One day we were talking with Zoe while she was at the store and a couple came in to look for an engagement ring. We heard her greet them warmly with “Welcome back! Did you do your competitive shopping like I recommended? I was pretty sure we would see you back here.” She then explained, “That’s the first thing I ask someone who comes into one of my stores: ‘Have you looked at other places? You really should know what is available and pricing.’ I’m always happy to see people come back after they do their research.” At

Herrington returned to the Golden Isles several years ago and continued to sell her jewelry online and by appointment before opening the St. Simons Island store at 1700 Frederica Road. Noble House, you can shop within your budget from in stock engagement and wedding rings, order something you’ve seen in a magazine, or design custom jewelry with the settings and diamonds of your dreams. Sean Moore, owner of OCM Mortgage, shared this about Herrington and her work ethic: “When I met with Zoe Herrington, I was surprised at her diminutive stature because I had watched her television commercials for years. This tiny powerhouse has been referred to as ‘the True American Dream.’ Work harder, think smarter, and build a better mousetrap.” That’s just what she did. The St. Simons Island store is the newest store in the Noble House dynasty. It offers more than 10,000 items, from custom-made pieces and opulent estate finds to novelty items, such as blessing bracelets and charms, and a sumptuous variety of sterling silver pieces. All are available at competitive prices designed to fit your wallet and lifestyle. Zoe explains, “The cornerstone of my business has always been our outstanding ability to cater to all financial status.” You’ll also find friendly, noncommissioned staff at Noble House. That means they are eager to help you find the perfect piece to meet your needs and budget without the pressure of getting the sale. Herrington and her certified, experienced jewelers are trained in expert appraisals. If

correct education, Noble House has a wide variety of quality gems and settings and competitive prices that will allow you to make informed decisions when shopping. Something else that may be important to you is the sourcing of diamonds. Zoe makes clear that Noble House does not purchase diamond from countries that reportedly do not treat their miners ethically, such as South Africa. Many of the diamonds you’ll see at Noble House are mined in Canada. an appraisal reveals your previously purchased gems are not what you were presented and sold, Zoe and her staff will work hard to support you with proper paperwork to present to your past jewelry vendor for adjudication of your purchase. They can also provide quality repairs on your fine jewelry and timepieces with full coverage under their jeweler’s insurance. If you have a beloved older piece of jewelry you’d like to update, Noble House can work with you on a custom design. The end result will be a piece you love even more because it keeps your treasured memories alive and incorporates your own personalization. It’s a beautiful way to pass on family heirloom pieces. When it comes to diamonds, Zoe and the Noble House staff can tell you everything you need to know about the color, clarity, cut, and caret weight of your diamond or any piece of new jewelry. In addition to providing you with the

During this gift-giving season, it’s worth noting that Noble House has a layaway program. Customers can put 20% down on their purchase and have up to a year to pay the balance. You can also purchase a holiday gift card in any amount as a stocking stuffer so your loved one can apply it to their layaway deposit or purchase.

We’re a sunny little joint that’s big on friendliness & fresh flavors.

Above all, if you’re considering giving jewelry this holiday season, Zoe urges you to do your research, go shop around at a variety of jewelry stores, and then visit Noble House Jewelry. Or come in first, then look around to compare. She’s sure you’ll return and is ready to greet you too with a “Welcome back!” She’s a rare gem indeed.

Real Estate, Done Right 912-638-5161 • seaislandproperties.com

AS 2020 COMES TO A CLOSE, Elegant Island Living returns to its annual discussion with Patrick Dunn of Sea Island Properties about the health and status of the St. Simons Island and Sea Island market and what practices are required to succeed in today’s real estate environment. Patrick has held the status of top producing agent in Glynn County for ten years in a row, and currently has over 200 million in sales and pending contracts so far in 2020.

EIL: What are homebuyers in your demographic looking for? What’s important to them? PD: Value is still number one. Buyers want a home that has a beautiful, clean look, with great potential. They also want an experienced Realtor knowledgeable about the market who they can trust to guide them through the buying process. Homebuyers today are not hesitant to purchase property and make renovations as long as they can see long term value. EIL: What makes Sea Island and St. Simons Island attractive for buyers and the luxury housing market? PD: Sea Island and St. Simons Island are an incredible community in which to live, work and play – a combination found in very few places. The people in our community are diverse, care about each other, and enthusiastically welcome newcomers of all ages. The housing market on St. Simons offers a 90

wide variety of styles and price ranges. At Sea Island Properties, our goal is to provide professional luxury home services, marketing tools and support to homebuyers on both Sea Island and St. Simons Island. EIL: What does it take to succeed in today’s real estate environment? PD: I create a plan for success and hold myself accountable by setting goals and developing a business plan. In real estate, the natural inclination is to put all the effort into sales or purchases because Realtors often think that’s what clients want. Actually, it’s not. Clients are hungry for details and answers, and when I deliver them, my clients remember. Experience is also a great teacher, so I note things I learn as I work with clients and my broker. Follow up is also integral to success for a real estate agent. I always contact my clients about two days after I’ve shown them around a property or assisted them with a sale. EIL: What challenges does the real estate market face in the year ahead? PD: This is a tough question coming off of 2020, which has been one of the strongest

primary and second home markets that any of us have seen in a long time. While the COVID 19 pandemic has certainly caused devastating health issues coupled with economic and social disruption in our country, the housing market has been a bright spot. The real estate market remained robust during 2020 in the Golden Isles with buyers expediting their decision to purchase their dream or retirement home. Families were able to work remotely, homeschool their children, and enjoy our islands’ amenities while adhering to federal and safety protocols. Families reconnected and found life a little simpler, less stressful and they were able to enjoy a peaceful experience in our beautiful environment. The national issues and trends facing the real estate market that we’ll follow closely as we enter a new year include economic issues (mortgage interest rates, housing inventory, the stock market, consumer confidence); a shifting political climate; generational changes, demographic and population trends; and evolving technology, communication and social media trends. However, our crystal ball focuses on real estate trends and issues that are local.

The good news is that the demand for housing will continue to be strong in the Golden Isles for 2021. The housing inventory has decreased substantially in 2020, however, so we’re entering a seller’s market. There will be ample opportunities to purchase but buyers need to stay close to their Realtor for current

start of something more. I maintain continued contact with clients and continually work on new ways to keep in touch. This leads to referrals, and there is

and more importantly, an avenue for them to meet other property owners in our area. EIL: In what ways do you give back to the community?

information regarding new listings. Constant communication with our customers and clients is the single most important thing that we can do as Realtors to keep all informed about the changing housing market. EIL: How do you stay on top of your game and in touch with your clients?: PD: Closing a transaction shouldn’t be the end of a client relationship. I view it as the

nothing more valuable to real estate professionals. One way I stay in contact is through a monthly electronic newsletter focused on local market conditions. This helps me to keep clients informed and remind them that I’m available and ready to help them, or any of their referrals. And who doesn’t like a party? I host 2-3 events per year for my clients, ranging from cocktail parties to yachting excursions and upland bird hunts. It’s a great way for me to reconnect with clients,

PD: For me, it is imperative to give back to the community that has given so much to me and my family. I do this not only financially, but by sharing my time and energy. I serve on the Davis Love Foundation, RSM Classic Foundation, The Boys and Girls Club, St Simons Community Church and YoungLife. This gives me the opportunity to meet other leaders in the community, learn about their needs, and the ability to work individually and collectively towards common goals. It is also a lot of fun to participate in the many local community events! Patrick Dunn’s office is located at Sea Island Properties, 351 Sea Island Road, St. Simons Island. Communities in Schools: Stability Amid Uncertainty by Anna Martin

“To surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” That is the mission of Communities in Schools of Glynn County whether school doors are open or closed. The staff of caring and qualified individuals in the nine schools served by CIS focuses on providing services that not only target academics, but also non-academic issues that inhibit students from reaching their full potential. Whatever a student needs to be successful in school, Communities in Schools operates to identify those needs and provide solutions for each student.

W

hile some cases are as simple as needing eye glasses or homework help, other challenges are not always easy to identify. Many kids face overwhelming roadblocks to their academic and personal success: emotional effects of trauma, untreated medical or dental conditions, learning disabilities, homelessness, bullying, and in many cases, a lack of school supplies and clothes. Communities in Schools’ commitment to students brings communities together for them by collaborating with the Glynn County School System to understand their needs and 92

deliver resources tailored to them. CIS goes beyond the classroom to work with local businesses, social service agencies, healthcare providers and volunteers to give every student the confidence to overcome life’s challenges and lead them to a path of success: graduate from high school and continue on to higher education, the workforce or the military. The CIS mission became extremely important after the March 2020 school closings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite challenges faced by all students, staff and families, the

CIS senior class persevered and achieved a 100 percent graduation rate for the third consecutive year at Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy. CIS served 531 students in the Glynn County School System during the 2019 – 2020 school year and saw promotion rates in the 90th percentile for all grade levels. Communities in Schools of Glynn is a local affiliate of the nation’s largest dropout prevention network. CIS National works directly inside more than 2,500 school and community sites to do whatever it takes to empower kids to realize their full potential. The CIS model is a proven mix of evidence-based practice and human capital that, through a three-tier program of integrated student support provided by CIS affiliates, site coordinators and collaborative partners, has proven success rates nationally and locally. High school principals at Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy credit much of the graduation rate success to the CIS program. Historically, CIS has become an integral partner in helping to increase graduation rates since its inception in Glynn County in the mid2000s. The overall graduation rate was just above 50 percent at that time and has seen a growth of over 30 percentage points over the past 10 years. The data shows that with a communitywide focus on a systemic problem, changing the picture for our Glynn County students is possible, and CIS works hard to continue fulfilling that mission.

Communities in Schools recently launched its 2019-2020 Annual Report summarizing its efforts and results over the last year. CIS expanded into Altama Elementary School at the start of the 20192020 school year thanks to a threeyear Challenge Grant through CIS National. A major goal included in the 2017-2020 strategic plan was accomplished with this new program site: to fully implement the CIS model in eight schools and serve approximately 550 case-managed students. CIS’ growing relationship with the Glynn County School System has resulted in positive outcomes for more students every year, and the staff is grateful to the school system for their belief in the program and opportunity to work together to change lives. CIS of Glynn began serving McIntosh County at the start of the 2020-2021 school year with the high school program at McIntosh County Academy. This addition, more than two years in the making, is a result of McIntosh County superintendent Dr. Jim Pulos coming to CIS after seeing the issues related to education that exist in the county today. As a former Glynn County Schools top administrative since 2016, Dr. Pulos was highly involved with the CIS program and an outspoken supporter of the results it achieved. After many planning meetings and generous funding support from The Sapelo Foundation, the new program was set to begin in August 2020. 2020 has been a challenging year for all and certainly for those in education due to the effects of

the COVID-19 pandemic. CIS shifted gears in March 2020 when schools closed their doors, putting its team into action to continue to meet the needs of students and their families. Site coordinators were in constant communication with students that they case manage to determine what specific needs could be met while students were held out of school. Although needs varied by the individual, the CIS mission remained intact: provide whatever necessary to enable the student to remain focused on success in school and achieving in life. CIS launched a grocery store gift card drive to provide food for families that lacked transportation to access the school system’s food distribution program, and the effort is ongoing. CIS also participated in the “Computers for a Cause” program in partnership with other organizations in the community to provide technology needs to students participating in virtual learning. The CIS team is responding to continuing needs for these supplies to provide for students learning from home. Each Communities in Schools annual report features a graduate that has made great accomplishments he or she attributes to CIS. The current report features Glynn Academy graduate Patrick Sparks, a once-troubled student who is now attending Fort Valley State majoring in business management. Before entering the CIS program in sixth grade, Patrick, also known as PJ, struggled to control his emotions, as many middle school students do. Those challenges made it difficult for him to focus on being successful

in school and the larger picture of understanding why it is so important. That’s when CIS entered his life and things began to change. Patrick’s Glynn Middle School site coordinator, Jazmin Ponce, said “He had some serious daily behavior issues like throwing chairs across the classroom and not being able to control himself emotionally. It took a lot of behavior interventions for him to learn how to properly express himself in school. He’s learned to conquer his emotions and not react in the moment, but to walk away, take a deep breath, and express himself in a well-mannered way.” Ponce, currently employed to case-manage students at Glynn Academy, continued as Patrick’s site coordinator in high school. She said during his senior year, Patrick assisted CIS by helping younger students who would get frustrated in class. “They would really listen to him because they saw him as a role model, someone who’s been through what they’re dealing with.” He tutored freshman and helped other students apply to college or pursue a career certification. Patrick graduated with an above-3.0 GPA and with his business management degree, wants to open his own restaurant someday and “be as successful as Gordon Ramsey.” “Going from a gifted all ‘A’ elementary student to making ‘Fs’ in middle school was disap-

pointing and embarrassing,” Patrick said. “I would act out and not care about my school, letting my anger issues and bad behavior get in the way of my education. CIS helped me get my behavior on the right path and opened up my eyes to the importance of an education. Ms. Jazmin has always been there for me no matter what it is or no matter what I have to talk about. Even if it’s something simple, she doesn’t mind. Ms. Jazmin and CIS helped me to change my life entirely around.” In the 2019-2020 Annual Report, CIS Executive Director Lynn Love expresses many thanks to the Glynn County School System for their partnership over the years, which continues to strengthen and grow resulting in positive outcomes for more students every year. Love also writes, “Thanks also to the business community, foundations and government entities, and individual partners who contribute their time, talents and resources to our mission. And a big thank you to the parents, guardians and families who trust us to step in and help in what often are very personal and difficult circumstances.” Donations can made online at glynncounty. communitiesinschools.org or made payable to Communities in Schools of Glynn County and mailed to P.O. December on St. Simons Island by John Adams

D

ecember is a special time. We gather at our homes, thankful for our many blessings and the roof we have over our heads. But December on St. Simons Island is a rare treat, especially for a 16-year-old boy from Decatur (not near Atlanta) who first viewed the ocean from the beaches of our Coastal Empire. (That’s also where I learned never to admit to having been anywhere near Atlanta at any time, for fear of shunning.) That would have been around 1970, more or less, and I was attending a Campus Life conference for high school students. It was held on Jekyll, but I knew I was hooked then and there. From the Aquarama, I could see the ocean, and that was enough for me. Since then, my affection has centered mostly on SSI, and the December holidays are my favorite time of the year here. One thing I love about the holiday is hearing the original Drifters sing their version of “White Christmas” For some reason, I associate this chart-topping hit song with Georgia beaches and boardwalks and sand. And I’m still uncertain as to how that happened, except that the beach was such an exotic place for a boy from Decatur (not near Atlanta). The song was a hit in 1954, the year of my arrival on

this planet, so I’m reasonably certain I don’t remember it from then. Continuing the “exotic” theme, I also love to see palm trees decorated with ornaments and multiple strings of gaudy multi-colored lights which trace the gentle arch of the trunk. In His gracious plan, the Almighty has not allowed palm trees to survive in the Decatur metro area, so every time I see one, my heart is drawn back to this blessed island. And now that my wife has informed me that I actually prefer white lights to the unacceptable multi-colored lights, I am even happier the season has arrived. A number of years ago, my parents came to the island to spend the holiday with us, and my father made Christmas Day buffet reservations for all of us at The King and Prince Resort. (He also picked up the check.) Talk about holiday indulgence! The food was exquisitely prepared and artistically presented. My recollection is that we arrived before noon and brunch was being served. As always, there were some Yankees in line ahead of us who wanted to know

what a “grit” was and if you could put cream on them. (Heresy!) But the meal, the surroundings, the family, the view all intertwined to make lasting memories that call me back to St. Simons time after time. Surely this is one reason why real estate is such a valuable commodity here. I have asked my appraiser friends to list this brunch as a positive factor on more than one of my property appraisals, to no avail. December is a time for walking with loved ones on the beach, enjoying the brisk wind with a hint of sea spray in the air, and for being thankful for our many blessings. So don’t be surprised if you happen to see a beautiful wife with a tall, somewhat hefty and balding man, both seasoned citizens, strolling the beach at sunset on Christmas Day. Please stop and say “hello.” If you ask whether I’m from Decatur, I am likely to say “no.” All of the above being said, I know that for most of us, home is where the heart is. My sincere hope this season is that you and yours experience the most wonderful time of your life this month. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

is the holiday season for family gatherings, cheerful decorations, delicious foods, and a grateful heart. At Morris & Templeton Insurance we understand that there’s no place like home for the holidays, and we want to help ensure that. We are here to make sure you can enjoy the festivities without a worry in the world. Although it’s the most wonderful time of the year, it’s also considered one of the riskiest times of the year. The number of home accidents and thefts increase drastically throughout the holiday season; in fact, the number of homeowner’s insurance claims usually doubles during the months of November and December. Christmas classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation takes holiday disasters to an extreme. You’ve probably laughed as the mishaps pile up and the Griswold family can’t catch a break. In reality, Christmas catastrophes are all too common and they are no laughing matter. One of the main reasons for the spike in claims during the holidays is fires. Christmas trees, candles and cooking large family meals seem to be the culprits for the 15% increase in fire claims during the holidays.

Fortunately, standard homeowners insurance policies cover damage due to fires. But checking on it now is a good idea. Look over your insurance policy limits. In the event that you’re forced to rebuild and replace, what does your coverage look like? If you’ve made expensive purchases and renovations and haven’t updated your policy recently, now is the time to call Morris & Templeton Insurance. Another unfortunate statistic you should be aware of is the nearly 7% increase in burglaries and theft claims during the holiday season. Make sure your gifts are out of sight, your deliveries aren’t left unattended on your doorstep, your doors are locked, and your lights are on to help deter unwanted guests. Also, since we’re in such a digital first world, resist the temptation to share too many details about your travel plans on social media. Santa isn’t the only one who’s always watching! If the unexpected happens, make sure you are covered. Most homeowner’s insurance

At Morris & Templeton Insurance we want to be a part of your most wonderful time of the year. We understand that accidents happen, especially with all the distractions you’ll face this Christmas, but we’re here to make sure you’re covered. Give us a call, we’ll make a list and check it twice, so you can be worry-free throughout the holidays.

policies provide coverage for possessions at 50% to 70% of the dwelling’s coverage. So, if your home is insured for $500,000, you’ll have $250,000 to $350,000 worth of coverage for your belongings. There are, however, limits on luxury items so this is the time to touch base with your insurance agent.

LIGHTS OF LOVE GOES VIRTUAL Like so many other things, Hospice of the Holden Isles’ Lights of Love will look a little different this year. After much thought and consideration, the HGI board and staff have decided to host the beloved annual event online this year. This wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the most responsible one considering public health and safety concerns. They will be hosting the Service of Remembrance and campus lighting virtually on December 17 at 5:00 p.m. Watch from home with your loved ones at hospice.me/LightsOfLove. 14TH AJ DONAHUE ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The show will go on! Mark your calendars for February 27, 2021. The AJ Donahue Golf Tournament will look a bit different this year, but plans are underway to make it a socially distanced and safe event for everyone. The Foundation’s mission is to support institutions providing care to victims of pediatric cancer, scholarships for those providing care or aspiring to provide care to the victims of pediatric cancer, and families of children afflicted with pediatric cancer. Donations and proceeds from the tournament events help provide scholarships for nursing students interested in pediatric oncology, updates to the Wolfson Children’s Center in Brunswick, and the Annual Christmas Gift Program. More details will be available on their website soon, so keep an eye out. ajdonohuefoundation.org

CREATING TIMELESS DESIGN Sea Island resident Lisa Carmichael worked in high-end real estate for 15 years in her native city of Indianapolis, transitioning into design after many of her clients requested design advice. When she and her husband Bill moved to Sea Island four years ago, she decided to jump back into full-time work. With Elizabeth Carmichael Interiors, LLC, Lisa works on a wide variety of projects in differing styles. She is adept at interpreting and incorporating the essence of her diverse multigenerational clients, together with her own creative input. “My personal design aesthetic is an eclectic and carefully curated mix of antiques with newer items; it’s a juxtaposition of styles,” she said. Incorporating heirlooms is a big part of Lisa’s overall design theme. The result is a timeless cohesive mix, tailored specifically to each

NEW YEAR’S EVE SHRIMP DROP Once upon a time in the 1980s, the City of Brunswick dropped a homemade shrimp named Bob from the top of the tower at Mary Ross Waterfront Park to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Hundreds gathered to watch as the shrimp made its way down into a pit of red balloons to mark the arrival of the new year. The tradition was discontinued after 2002, but this year Bob will make his return! The public is invited to come out to the park beginning at 6:00 p.m. to enjoy live music by Squirt Gun and Salt Water Gypseas, while still observing social distancing guidelines. There will also be games for the kids, craft vendors, and food trucks on site. The countdown for the Shrimp Drop will take place a little before 8:00 p.m.

Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. “Home is where one starts from” T. S. Eliot. It was important to me moving to the Golden Isles to find a home to embrace my family and to celebrate the treasures I have collected over the years. I have found it here on St. Simons Island. I live in Hamilton Landing. I love living in this community because it has a happy, family atmosphere with easy access to all of the island’s best attractions. The inside of my home has a welcoming and relaxed feel thanks to my decorator Dan Proctor, Kirk Designs of Baltimore, MD. When I am at home, I love to entertain. The best parties seem to end up in my kitchen/morning room. I have made this an inviting space to mingle as well as a peaceful place to enjoy the newspaper and a cup of coffee. The comfort of this room feels like the sweater you wear on chilly Sunday mornings. When I am not entertaining, you can find me cooking, reading or riding my bike. Throughout my home you will see my love of Herend Porcelain. I have been collecting it since college. Each piece has a story behind it, as a gift for a special occasion, holiday or celebration. They simply make me happy. I also love art. One of my favorite pieces is the abstract painting in my living room my daughter, Carolyn helped me choose. We both love viewing and collecting art. I believe home is not a place but a feeling. After visiting the Golden Isles all of my life, I love calling Saint Simons home and bringing my passions for real estate to life here!

A Christmas Tradition for the Birds

A

nnual holiday traditions such as lighting the Christmas tree and exchanging gifts are familiar to most Americans, but there is one national tradition that is especially important to bird lovers. At the turn of the 20th century, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman of the American Museum of Natural History proposed an annual census of early-winter bird populations. This volunteer-led census, organized by the Audubon Society, became known as the “Christmas Bird Count.” The first count was held in 1900 in twenty-five locations. According to annual reports published by the Audubon Society, Georgia joined the census in 1913, with Atlanta counting 50 species and 1,225 individual birds. By 1949, Glynn County was submitting data from Brunswick, St. Simons Island, and Sea Island on an intermittent basis. In 1951, for example, a team of five women, including local historian Margaret Davis Cate, identified 51 species and 1,359 individual birds in the southern part of St. Simons and Sea Island. Cate was an avid bird-lover who gathered over 100 images of birds for slideshows she presented at The Cloister on Sea Island in the 1940s and 1950s. The location in our area that appears most frequently in the census is Sapelo Island, where the count was originally organized by the University of Georgia Marine Institute. On New Year’s Day 1959, a team of three people took the first Sapelo census, recording 100 species and 2,492 individual birds. On the team was UGA professor Eugene Odum, now known as the father of modern ecosystems ecology. The archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society contains the Sapelo report for the 1963-

64 census, a portion of which is shown here. On December 29, 1963, a team of 13 people recorded 134 species and 6,300 individual birds. The census continues to be taken each year on Sapelo. For the 2018-19 census, thirteen counters identified 113 species. The Christmas Bird Count continues to be held each year between December 14 and January 5 and, in addition to the United

States, includes locations in Canada, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Data collected over the past 120 years have provided vital information about the changing status of bird populations and enabled scientists to develop strategies for protecting birds and their habitats. So, for bird lovers interested in adding a new tradition to their holiday season, the Christmas Bird Count is a worthy volunteer effort!

You Don’t Give to Us, You Give Through Us. 2020 HAS BEEN A YEAR OF CHALLENGES and the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation has remained active in responding to the ever-changing needs of the community. The Foundation was there to help when an employer wanted to establish a fund to aid its employees with unexpected financial strain. When a family was struggling to agree on a focus for their annual giving, the Foundation offered informed localized options. When a former educator watched the rising cost of education create obstacles in the hearts and minds of area young people, the Foundation was there to set up a scholarship fund to match their interest.

Your Fund Your Interests YOUR LEGACY
