PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Best of the Best

E The St Simons Island Signature Bracelet, Jekyll Island Turtle Bracelet, earrings, pendants, and custom-fit toe rings are included in the array of unique pieces found only here. Sizes for all wrist measurements. All pieces proudly handcrafted in the beautiful Golden Isles.

very July, EIL unveils the annual Best Of issue. It is one of the most anticipated issues of the year and yet I have a love/hate relationship with it. If it were up to me, I would have 500 categories, because there is so much to do, see and experience here. But, as I’ve been told numerous times by voters, it takes forever to type in your choice for the 100+ categories we have already! I do want to thank all of you loyal readers who took the time and effort to go online and cast your votes. Each email address can only vote one time, so I was especially pleased that this year we had the largest number of voters ever. I must admit that I never participate in the Best Of voting. I could never cast a vote for one of our advertisers over another and, to be totally honest, it would be extremely hard for me to vote for someone who doesn’t advertise in EIL. Since I didn’t vote in this year’s Best Of, I thought I would come up with some of MY Best Of categories. Best place to park at the movies on Friday night when the parking lot is full: Around the back of

Island Day Spa. Best time to try to get on Frederica #106 Pier Villag e M arke t , St. Simons Is l and (912) 638.3636 www.GIBCoBracelets.com

Road heading south from my house in Sea Palms: 7:45 a.m. (Worst time to try to get on Frederica Road heading south from my house in Sea Palms: 7:50 a.m.) Best place to buy scratchoff lottery tickets: I’ll never tell! Best Cable Company: Comcast (SAID NO ONE EVER!) Best place to be on the phone when you want to get disconnected: Most anywhere on the island if you have AT&T like me.

12

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

Best place to leave your phone: On top of your car as you try to lift your 160 lb. dog into the back seat (Best way to discover where you left your phone: by hearing the sound of something sliding down the back of the car roof and off the back end, just as you mutter the words, “Son of a #&%*$!”). Best place to test your driving skills: The roundabout in July when all of the tourists who’ve never driven a roundabout are in town. Best day of the week: Tuesday! That’s the day my maid comes. Best pool to sneak your 160 lb Newfoundland into for some night swimming: The condos next door (until they call the cops about a “bear” swimming in the pool). Best place to be a 12 year old kid: St. Simons Island. You can ride your bike all day, see pretty girls on the beach, eat ice cream at the pier, go to the movies, and stay up late binge-watching shows on Netflix at night during the summer! Best place to be a 55 year old: St. Simons Island. You can ride your bike for an hour or less, stare at pretty women on the beach, eat frozen yogurt (because it’s supposed to be better for you) at the pier, go to the movies, and stay up till at least 10:00 p.m. binge-watching shows on Netflix during the summer.

I grew up on St. Simons, I live on St. Simons, I LOVE St. Simons. It truly is the BEST OF THE BEST! P.S. Speaking of the BEST, EIL will be celebrating our 15th Anniversary next month. Be sure to look out for our special 15th Anniversary commemorative edition!

he appeal of victory is timeless and each year we ask our readers to take the time to vote for their favorite retailers and restaurants, amenities and attractions, entertainers and entrepreneurs in the Golden

Isles. Thousands of you took the time to write in your responses and we’ve tallied the results to give you the list of 2017 winners. In this EIL anniversary year, we also thought we’d take a look back at past winners and share what it meant to them to be included on this list. Throughout the feature, you’ll see photos and quotes from people who were picked as winners by our readers last year, many of whom have also won in prior years and in multiple categories. It’s all about the community and we’re ALL winners for being part of it and celebrating that!

Beyond the beach, there are so many things to do, places to go, and attractions to see here in the Golden Isles. Summer is the perfect time for visitors to take advantage of some of the unique offerings here that set us apart from other vacation destinations. The St. Simons lighthouse and other area historic sites are wellknown, shopping can be found anywhere, and the beach, mini golf, and the water park are no-brainers for vacationers, so here’s our “Pick Six” for a visit that scores big with the home team! ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

CAST OUT THE NETS H

ow often do you get the chance to trawl nets and sort the catch on a working shrimp boat or to learn about history as you float along watching dolphins play nearby? Captain Larry Credle and his crew at Credle Adventures are all about having safe, fun, and educational cruises where you can learn about coastal Georgia marine life and the history of the Golden Isles. From shrimping and crabbing to birdwatching and dolphin watching, they offer several types of cruises on different vessels so you can tailor just the kind of adventure you’d like. The Lady Jane shrimp boat is a United States Coast Guard certified passenger steel shrimping vessel that has been refurbished to give you and your family a comfortable and interesting journey. On board, you and your children can become deckhands and learn all about the creatures you might bring in with the net. There could be horseshoe crab, puffer fish, amberjack, crockery, spot, whiting, blue crab, skate, and what we, of course, think is the best catch: Georgia white shrimp. Each shrimp cruise takes place in the calm, protected waters of St. Simon Sound where you’ll see beautiful skies and enjoy the gentle breezes that will keep you cool on your trip. The Lady Jane is equipped with an air-conditioned cabin, restroom, and a large open covered deck with ample room for

you to walk around and enjoy the view. Passengers six years old and up are $39.95, and passengers under five years old are $35. You will be required to arrive by 3:45 p.m. for the 4:00 p.m. departure. Soda is available for sale and small coolers are allowed. You can also rent the Lady Jane for private parties of up to 49 guests with your own supplied or catered food. There is also a two-hour Low Country Boil cruise offered. Pricing information is available on their website. Another excellent excursion with Credle Adventures is to go crabbing aboard the Blue Dolphin. You will travel the creeks of the beautiful marshes of Glynn and drop anchor, set up crab traps, and learn how to cast a net from the first mate. Here, dolphins might frolic and fish nearby, and you’ll see many different variety of shorebirds such as pelicans, gulls, skimmers, and black legged kittiwakes flock around close by while you listen to the crew talk about some history of the Golden Isles. This is a great way to try your hand at the net and, who knows, you might even catch your own south coastal Georgia supper! $49.95 per passenger.10:00 a.m. departure, or call for special departure times at 912.230.4018. The Blue Dolphin is also available for charter fishing tours, for more information about that, click the charter tours link on their website. Another popular option is the 90+ minute, narrated historic Brunswick tour by water on their sightseeing dolphin tour. On board, you will learn about the different kinds of Spartina (marsh grass) that grow here and what an important role it plays in our marshland habitat. BECOME A ROCK STAR

K

eep your eyes open and your mind alert while you’re on St. Simons Island, and you can be a rock star! If you’re lucky, you’ll spot painted rocks while you visit popular locations on the island. These cool creations are part of SSIROCKS, a social media fueled community project that EIL voters chose as the “Best New Thing About St. Simons Island.” It all began in December 2016, when Joy Elliot saw a post on Facebook from a page called Lakeland Rocks of a cute, excited child holding a painted rock. She explains, “Intrigued, I went to the page and found post after post of rocks people had painted and were about to hide, or had found.” As Joy is always looking for things to do with her grandkids when they visit, she thought it would be a fun project to try here. So, she took that idea to social media, posting the pictures on a local group page. The concept was a huge hit, so Joy created the Facebook group and SSIROCKS was born with a mission to “Spread the Joy.” The group has joined other rock groups across the US as part of the Kindness Project (kindnessrockproject.com). At the time of writing, SSIROCKS has more than 3,200 members, but you don’t have to be one to participate. Just look for these fun and fantastic rocks or paint some of your own and hide them! By posting photos of the rocks painted, hidden, or found on Facebook or Ins-

tagram with the #SSIROCKS tag, the members of the group can show off their creativity, leave clues, see where “their” rocks are, and learn who’s enjoying them. Joy says, “Managing all of this is quite a task and would not be possible without the help of Ruby Leanne Henderson and Autumn Roberts who act as page monitors and event coordinators. The success of SSIROCKS can be credited to the incredible members who actively paint and hide hundreds and hundreds of rocks each month and those members who do not paint, but rehide most of what they find to continue to Spread the Joy to others.” Families are painting, hiding, hunting and re-hiding rocks together as an activity. Community groups and organizations are painting rocks. Teachers have used the project as a educational tool in their classrooms. There have been community painting and rock hunt events. Many local businesses are creating and hiding “prize rocks” for finders to bring in for a special treat. Parents are using the re-hiding part as a way of teaching kids to share. It is a unique kind of pay-it-forward. People have posted so many sweet stories of how finding a rock motivated or inspired them, or of children who found their first rock and it had some personal significance to them. Joy

SSIROCKS founder Joy Elliot

says, “The faces of the children when they have found even the plainest rock is just so heartwarming! I think many members join the group just to see those adorable little happy faces – and that’s just another way we’re Spreading the Joy” Ruby also shared her excitement about SSIROCKS and its continued growth and success. She keeps track of all those #SSIROCKS social media tags, and acknowledges each and every one. As she puts it so well, “Who doesn’t want to be called a rock star?!” She and Joy both agree that it’s been an amazing journey, they’re making wonderful new friends, and love when more people Spread the Joy and share the Kindness. So, take a little time to look around and see what YOU find; SSIROCKS are perfect souvenirs of your time here!

MEET MR. CREAMER

A

summer vacation simply wouldn’t be complete without ice cream, so we’re steering you to St. Simons Sweets in the Village on St. Simons Island. When you open the door, the first things you’ll notice are the brightly colored candies and sweets in the canisters and display cases and the delicious aroma of baking treats that fill the air. But don’t let that distract you from making your way back to the ice cream counter. Once you’re there, you’ll discover that it’s not quite as simple as vanilla or chocolate, cake or sugar cone! The array of flavors is mind-boggling and owner Sharon Clark is proud to brag about their creator, a man whose name alone suggests that he’s the perfect fit for the job: Adam Creamer. About two years ago, St. Simons Sweets began making their ice cream in-house, and Adam is at the helm of that endeavor, with the able assistance of master dipper Bradley Gardner and culinary craftsman and baker Drew Covington. They now use fresh ingredients which include most of the baked elements that go into the flavors. Pecan bars and key lime pie, and candies like pralines and buckeyes, are all made on site from Sharon’s family recipes and folded

into the ice cream. Fresh fruit makes their classic strawberry, Amaretto Peach, and Blueberry Delight stand out from store-bought flavors. A couple exceptions exist with “outside” ingredients, like Coffee and Donuts, made with Krispy Kremes, and Samoa, featuring the popular Girl Scout cookie. When asked if she bought out Glynn County’s stash of Samoas from the Girl Scouts to still have this one in the freezer, Sharon chuckles, “Probably! It all started because I wanted to help a little girl get to her goal of an 800-box order. I asked Adam if there was something we could do with the cookies if I bought up her boxes. He said, ‘Samoa cookies?! Sure!’ and came up with the flavor using the crumbled cookies. I ended up buying more from other girls too. All total, we probably bought 1200 boxes of cookies!” It’s that kind of brainstorming that Adam and Sharon and the other sweet shop staff do to come up with all these delicious flavors, many inspired by Southern fare, like Praline, Banana Pudding and Red Velvet Cake. Even the Birthday Cake ice cream starts with cake handmade from a cherished family recipe. And once you pick out your flavors, we suggest putting it in one of the waffle cones they

Drew Covington, Adam Creamer, Bradley Gardner

bake themselves. For extra decadence, have one that’s hand-dipped in chocolate and embellished with sprinkles or nuts. The cone is almost as much of a treat as the ice cream itself! Of course, you can always indulge in a milkshake or a sundae too. Don’t be surprised if the shop is busy. Sharon says they sell about 150 3-gallon tubs of ice cream per week. They also supply about 15-20 buckets of signature flavors to the Jekyll Island Market and can do that for other local restaurants or stores, if requested. The process of making the ice cream generally takes about 3 hours from kitchen to freezer. Adam says best sellers include Cookies & Cream and Banana Pudding. One of their more creative creations, Lucky Charm Cheesecake, was a big hit too, and they plan to bring that back, along with more new flavors that incorporate favorite treats or seasonal fresh ingredients. Stop by 229 Mallery Street to satisfy your ice cream cravings the next time you’re in the Village. Whether you’re visiting the island or a longtime local, Sharon, Adam, and the rest of the staff will treat you like part of the family, and your experience is sure to be a sweet one. (continues)

ENJOY A REEL GOOD TIME

E

xperience the incredible fishing that the Golden Isles and Georgia Coast has to offer with Coastal Island Charter Fishing. Originally founded in 1990, Coastal Island Charter Fishing has been reeling in the big ones with anglers on the Georgia Coast since 1990. Cpt. Ashley Parmalee is a professional fisherman who has been fishing the coast since he was old enough to walk. He was named St. Simons’ Captain of the Year in 2010 for his skill and boasts 30 plus years of great catches. Originally from North Georgia, Cpt. Robert Marascalco grew up on the water fishing for bass in Lake Lanier. From trout fishing on the Nantahala River to catching yellowfin tuna in Port Eades, Louisiana, Robert has always been an avid angler. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, he’ll be taking over at the helm of the business, so to speak, while Ashley steps back to spend more time with his family. Robert’s wife, Rachel, welcomes this new adventure, saying, “Our lives, working and playing, have always revolved around the water and fishing. Robert has dreamed of owning a charter business as long as I’ve known him, but never thought it would become a reality.” Through what the Marascalcos call a “very coincidental chain of events,” they’re now making their dreams come true, and together with Ashley as Coastal Island Charter Fishing, want to make your fishing experience in the Golden Isles a dream come true as well.

Trolling and bottom fishing trips are available in fall, winter, and spring. All fishing is done from fast open boats to get you to the fish quickly! If it’s sharks and tarpon that you want to catch, jacks, tarpon, black nose, bonnethead, fine tooth and spinner sharks are plentiful during the summer. This tour, where fishing is done with live bait, lures, and 30-pound tackle, is by far Coastal Island Charter Fishing’s most popular tour, because they ALWAYS catch something. A wealth of information acquired over the past decade about the location and patterns of these fish have made for some action-packed experiences with challenging and fun fights to land sharks and tarpon. Inshore fishing is best in fall, winter, and spring, and sometimes in summer as well. If you’re looking for “keeper” fish or like fishing in calm water with lots of beautiful scenery and photo opportunities, this trip is wellsuited to your needs. Trout and redfish fishing can be excellent at the mouth of the Sound during certain months and tide levels, while flounder, sheepshead, black drum and more are abundant during the fall season.

t’s a moment I will never forget. Carol and I stood at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, facing 9,387 white marble Latin crosses and Stars of David as we listened to our national anthem. We then turned and faced the glorious 22-foot bronze statue, “The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” as we listened to the

playing of “Taps.” There wasn’t a dry eye among us. Our Viking cruise hosts had given each of our 80 strong a rose to lay at the base of the statue where the words read “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Coming of the Lord.” It was such a beautiful touch. This trip had been planned with one goal in mind: to visit Normandy and the cemeter-

ies to give tribute to our brave warriors who paid the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Overlord and the European battles that followed. My dad was a career Air Force officer who served in England during WW II. Carol’s dad was a career Navy pilot. on board the ship on a journey that had begun in Paris the prior Friday. Upon disembarking our Air France flight at Paris-De Gaulle Airport, we were met by a Viking representative and delivered to our boat, 50 minutes away in Le Pecq. In the past, Viking docked on the Seine in downtown Paris; however, the new Viking Longships are too big to dock there. Thus, their new mooring site is now in Le Pecq. The following day we explored Paris by taking the optional excursion, “Highlights of Paris and the Louvre.” After a short stop at the Eiffel Tower, we motored to NotreDame Cathedral and spent an hour there followed by lunch in a French restaurant. (It was, after all, a restaurant in France!) Our Louvre guide was excellent and took us to the main 52

statues and paintings housed in the museum. We visited the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo among other fabulous works of art. That evening, our ship departed Le Pecq for Vernon. The highlight of our stay in Vernon was a tour of Giverny and artist Claude Monet’s beautiful gardens. We then had time to walk through Giverny and visit Monet’s gravesite in the cemetery of the Eglise Sainte-Radegonde, a church built in the 11th and 12th centuries. That afternoon we took a walking tour through the medieval town of Vernon, visiting the Collegiate Church built between the 11th and 17th centuries. The next day we arrived in Rouen and following breakfast attended a presentation on Joan of Arc,

the Maid of Orleans, and patron saint of France. That afternoon we enjoyed a walking tour of Rouen, historic capitol of Normandy. Because of the number of churches in Rouen, it is known as “the City of a Hundred Spires.” We toured two cathedrals, both spectacular, and ended our tour at the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. She was just 19 years old. After arriving in Normandy on Tuesday, we first stopped in Arromanches-les-Bains, where we observed the remains of a prefabricated harbor known as Mulberry B, designed to assist in landing Allied supplies. Following lunch at a wonderful restaurant in Arromanches, we drove to Longues-sur-Mer where we observed some of the German batteries which rained hell down on allied troops on D-Day. (continues)

A historically important site, it is protected and managed by Conservatoire du littoral, to safegard its history and biodiversity. Following our visit to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, where we had experienced the emotional ceremony by the crosses that I described earlier, we drove the length of Omaha Beach, stopping at a memorial entitled “Les Braves,” by Anilore Banon, and dedicated on the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings. From Howard H. Leach, U.S. Ambassador to France: “’The Braves,’ will serve as a significant tribute to the courage of the Allied Forces soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the liberty of our peoples and as a reminder to coming generations that those who died did so in defense of our shared values of tolerance and freedom. The spirit of those who sacrificed so much will rise through the waters and linger in our collective memories thanks to your sculpture.” The next day we arrived at Les Andelys where we walked up a long hill to visit Chateau Gaillard, the fortress built by Richard the Lionhearted in the 12th Century. Richard I was king of England from 1189 until his death in 1199. Chateau Gaillard was built in under two years, instead of the typical ten and was a century ahead of its time in terms of innovations according to historians. His heart is buried in a tomb at Rouen Cathedral. The last day in France was a tour of the Palace of Versailles, former home of Louis XIV. One of the most interesting elements of the palace is the Petit Trianon, a small chateau and garden given to Marie Antoinette by her husband, Louis XVI. Extravagant is the only way to describe Versailles.

While we saw many amazing sights in France, Carol and I had truly made this trip in honor of our fathers and as a tribute to their service. t was the spring of 1967. One of the things that brought Judy and me together and cemented our relationship was our love for adventure. So, on the day we were married, we packed what little we owned into a ’65 Mustang and left Indiana for the West Coast. Our final destination was Hawaii, and we planned to ship our car from San Diego. Hawaii, could there be a better place to start our lives together? We were 22, armed with BS degrees, and had no jobs, no mortgage, and no major life goals. It was a perfect time to be a free spirit. This spring, 50 years later, we traveled back to the island paradise to relive the early days of our marriage and celebrate our memories. Judy and I toasted each other and boarded a plane to Honolulu in May. During the fifty years we have been married, we have traveled to lots of exotic locations, but we’ve never gone back to Hawaii. The long flight gave us lots of time to reflect on our journey many years ago as young newlyweds. Just getting to the West Coast had been a honeymoon adventure. We managed to survive a near disaster of careening off a snow-covered cliff in Colorado. A couple of days later, thieves in Las Vegas broke into our car and stole our stereo and LPs, but they left our wedding gifts, sterling silver, and my oil paints. Finally, when we made it to the docks at San Diego to ship our car, we encountered a dock master who thought we were runaways and counseled us to go home. Barely in our twenties, we saw ourselves as daring to venture so far from home without knowing anyone or having any support except each other. (Phone calls from Hawaii were completely cost prohibitive and mail took more than a week.) When we finally landed in Honolulu, we were nearly overcome with both excitement and fear, and our heads were filled with questions like: “Where would we stay?,” “What if we got sick?,” “What will we do for food and clothing?” We had a suitcase with basic (continues)

necessities, but it would be a month before our car would arrive and our budget was tight. As we neared Oahu on our return trip, our plane passed over the familiar blue water and sandy beaches we had frequented so many years ago. I imagined Judy and me following the winding coastline in our Honda 50 in search of deserted beaches and surf to paint. The Honda scooter was our first purchase as a couple and our only mode of transportation for several weeks while we waited for our car to arrive. We would scrunch onto the scooter and carefully balance our load of snorkeling gear, easel and paints in search of subject matter. This time around everything was prearranged via the internet, unlike before when all was left to chance. We fittingly reserved a Mustang convertible, and our 70+ bodies made the trek from the airport to the waterfront resort we had talked about for the last five decades. The Royal Hawaiian is a glamorous old hotel on Waikiki Beach and only a few blocks from where we used to live. Travel for us has changed over the years as we evolved from roving, free-spirited kids who were happy to just have a place to rest our head, to seniors seeking comfort and amenities. Honolulu had changed too. Once a surfing neighborhood with snow cone stands and t-shirt shops, Waikiki is now an upscale shopping area with the likes of Tiffanys, Saks, and Louis Vuitton.

From bungalow days with a cardboard coffee table to the Royal Hawaiian, much has changed over 50 years both for Ken and Judy, and for Hawaii.

Soon after we unpacked, we set out to find that little apartment we had rented on the Ali-Wai Canal so many years ago. Not surprisingly, our little bungalow was replaced with a modern high rise. We used to grill just outside our front door, Judy in her mumu and me in cutoffs, our standard uniform of the island. We made a happy home in that tiny apartment, and I was even able to carve out a corner where I could paint. The beach looked much the same now as then, populated with surfer wannabees, bikini clad teens and lots of families. It was easy (continues)

ounded in Atlanta in 2008 by Jeremy Turner, who was then serving as a police officer in DeKalb County, Contribute2America (C2A) has delivered more than 500,000 lbs. of food to more than 60,000 people in need. The non-profit does not receive any governmental grants, working entirely from funds raised within the community and giving out approximately 90% of what they bring in. When Jeremy was working within impoverished and homeless communities in DeKalb County, he saw first-hand what an impact personal involvement could have in helping to improve conditions. He created a food co-op there that requires recipients to participate by carrying and boxing the food they take home. In 2013, Jeremy expanded his operations to Brunswick, partnering with Safe Harbor to provide them with nutritional food. Two years later, he moved to St. Simons Island with his wife and daughters. Jeremy works as a Deputy Sheriff on the Patrol side of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office and is a member of the Brunswick Rotary Club. He attends St. Simons Community Church, assisting with security and outreach ministries. With two employees in Atlanta overseeing the ongoing programs there, Jeremy continues to run C2A from St. Simons Island. Locally, C2A has supported Safe Harbor’s Street Beat Program, provides hot meals twice a month to the homeless served by The Well and the Salvation Army, and assists with additional feeding programs through HIS Ministries.

Jeremy says that right now what C2A needs most is community support and monetary donations. It’s time to get the word out about C2A working right here in Glynn County to help feed those in need. Since C2A doesn’t rely on government funding, money needs to come from private and corporate donations. “It’s sad to say that all of the funding that goes into Brunswick comes from our Atlanta supporters. We need local support. Southern Soul Barbeque has stepped up by donating food for our feeding programs and giving us help cooking products when needed,” Jeremy shares. Currently C2A supports all of its programs on an annual budget of $40,000 per year. They are trying to raise additional money for a new Founder vehicle to pick up food Jeremy Turner and to purchase and fix up a house near downtown Brunswick that could function as C2A’s headquarters. Need is great and donations are crucial to making any progress. Jeremy would also like to see C2A expand into job training, education, and counseling. He says, “This may come into play where government grants can assist but until then we will have to gain support from our local communities and business. My lifelong goal would be able to do this full time. I have strong faith and I believe we should help all of those in need. I think the best gratification any human can get is to help another person.” But if that gratification isn’t enough, C2A is offering some additional incentive to donate by raffling off a Big Green Egg for a $10 minimum raffle contribution. For more information about C2A and to volunteer or donate, visit contribute2america.org.

to receive advice, though they don’t often follow it. How is one to sort it all out?

ISLAND IMPRESSIONS BY FR. TOM PURDY, RECTOR OF CHRIST CHURCH

Shun the Shoulds

W

There are certain sources of advice we should generally listen to. The advice that comes from certain vocations is still valuable. Such vocations include doctors, lawyers, accountants, clergy, counselors, mentors, and a few others. Spouses. I almost forgot spouses. Don’t forget spouses! See?! Right there I’m giving advice of my own! In fact, I did something I try not to do: I “should on” you. Sometimes it happens. I often counsel people not to let others “should on” them or not to “should on” themselves, but it’s hard not to on occasion.

ear sunscreen. Don’t smoke. Order the egg whites. Take your vitamins. Lose 15 pounds. Slow down. Eat more greens. Try half and half tea. Maybe skip the second glass of wine, and certainly the third. Don’t leave your litter on the beach. Get off the couch. Go to church. Keep your head down on your backswing. Get that mole looked at. Read Elegant Island Living. Try the oysters. Use synthetic oil. Switch to decaf. Smell the roses. Advice sure does come in all shapes and sizes.

There are lots of voices, including our own, that tell us what we should do. What we should look like. What we should wear. What we should eat, drive, play, and think. Where we should live. With whom we should be friends. It goes on and on and on. Sometimes we can get overwhelmed by all the shoulds in our lives. If we find that we’re doing something because someone else tells we should, we may not be acting in a way that is authentic to our true selves, which can be very unhealthy.

It seems the world is never short of people willing to offer advice. It comes at us from all directions, some welcomed, some not. Once in a while we solicit it, but often we do not. As advice givers, we typically assume that our experience is paramount and can be – no, should be– applied to others. Some advice is offered to be helpful, and some is offered as passive superiority. Some pieces of advice are more valuable than others. Some advice comes with authority and expertise behind it, while some comes from a sense of selfaggrandizement. Some people pay good money

Let’s be clear though. Shoulding is not always what is happening when someone tells us something we might consider. When our doctor says we need to eat differently to bring our cholesterol down, she’s not shoulding on us, she’s telling us how to live longer and healthier—the thing we’re paying her to do. When the church or the law proscribes a list of “shall-nots,”it’s not shoulding in the sense I worry about, because there is a place and a reason for commands a society or culture needs to follow. I’m thinking more of the messages that advertising sends to our young women

COSMETIC & FAMILY DENTISTRY Highly Recommended. Highly Referred. Accepting New Patients. 64

about how they should look, or how movies and television can glorify the way men treat women, ways that aren’t respectful or loving, or even how our desire for more of everything we think we should have keeps us from being more generous. Sometimes such shoulding is subtle and sometimes not; either way it’s quite effective. One of the only ways I know to avoid getting buried under shoulds is to be secure in who we are, and comfortable with our place in the world. We often have to reach a place of self-understanding and grounding that allows us to stand firm in the knowledge that we are whole and loved as we are; that our worth is not based on some outside measuring stick we can’t ever live up to. In my vocation, I get to help people work through their shoulds to hear that they are loved by God for who they are; not that they are perfect, but that they are enough. It’s an important step in finding true grounding. I get to remind people that we were created for something unique and special. We may need some advice and shepherding along the way, but not the kind that diminishes us in the process. The best advice is the kind that makes life better, healthier, more whole, and redeems our failures. Be careful what shoulds you listen to, and be wary of what they tell you. Some of them may actually be useful and helpful, while others might be more destructive than we realize. I have lots of advice I could give, like why you should visit my congregation, or why you should consider giving up processed sugar, or even where you should go to find the best burger on the island (there are a lot of “bests” in this issue!), but I won’t. Not beyond this: You shouldn’t listen to every should in your life. See what I did there? I did it again.

The “Coolest” Hotel on the Island

A

mong the earliest hotels on St. Simons Island, Ocean View House was owned and operated by Annie and Carl E.W. Arnold. The hotel was located in the vicinity of The King & Prince Beach & Golf Resort’s present site and, according to an 1883 advertisement in the Brunswick Advertiser and Appeal, was just “one hundred yards from the beach.” At that time, St. Simons was being discovered by vacationers from the mainland who were attracted by the cool ocean breezes and surf bathing. They arrived by steamer to the main island dock at Gascoigne Bluff, which also served the adjacent lumber mills. Few island residents lived near the beach, and the Village pier would not be constructed until about 1890.

Carl Arnold was born in Germany in the 1840s. After coming to America in 1869, he stopped briefly in New York before settling in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1870. He was later drawn to St. Simons Island, where he bought thirty acres of beachfront property and opened the Ocean View. His wife, Annie Stevens, was from a prominent St. Simons family of seamen, who owned and sailed vessels along the Southeastern coast, transporting cargo of Sea Island cotton, rice, and supplies for coastal towns. Her father Charles had emigrated from Denmark in 1836 and acquired property that included the long-abandoned Fort Frederica. Annie, born in 1844, grew up among the ruins of the colonial fort.

A 1913 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map indicates that, in addition to the main building, there were several vacation cottages on the Ocean View property, as well as a bath house, laundry, and auto garage. Carl Arnold died in 1924, followed three years later by Annie. The hotel, also known as Arnold House, reportedly continued in operation until the early 1950s. This month’s image is a 1916 color postcard, which describes Ocean View as the “coolest place” on the island with the “safest surf bathing” and “artesian mineral water.” The postcard lists room rates of $2 per day or $11 to $13 per week. Also shown is a 1927 photograph of the main building with guests sitting on second floor window ledges.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the Historic Coast Guard Station.
