Beaching 101: Staying Safe

S

ummer is a special time on St. Simons Island. For twelve weeks each year, our sleepy little island becomes a small metropolis with thousands of visitors enjoying the local lifestyle. And what brings most of our visitors is our wonderful beaches. Of course, when heading to the beach, you need to make sure you stay safe. Here are a few good tips to take with you as your bare feet hit the sand:

caught in them. Do not try to swim against the current. If you get caught in a rip current, start swimming parallel to the beach until you no longer feel yourself being pulled out, then swim back to the beach. 4. Wear sunscreen and eye protection. The sun is much more intense at the beach than in your backyard, so lather on the sunscreen, and make sure your eyes are shielded from UV rays as well. Be sure to re-apply sunscreen at least every 2-3 hours.

1. Be very careful on the sandbars. Sandbars are very appealing and seem easy to walk on,

hen it comes to handbags, nothing is more iconic than the Birkin bag by Hermes. As the story goes, in 1983, on an Air France flight from Paris to London, art house actress and singer Jane Birkin ended up sitting next to Jean-Louis Dumas, who just five years before had taken over the iconic leather goods company founded by his great-grandfather. While the two seatmates spoke, Jane happened to drop her Hermes diary from Two Friends a straw travel bag, which scattered her papers about. Dumas helped her gather them as Jane complained that her diaries were never adequate to hold all of her papers and her bags never had enough pockets. That was when Dumas introduced himself and promised that while he might not be able to produce the perfect diary for her, he could instead work on having her dream bag created. He took notes about what she wanted and left the plane with a basic preliminary sketch. They met up in the workshop and the Hermes craftsmen brought the dream to life in a supple black leather bag.

The Birkin became a status symbol and iconic accessory. It is the most popular bag for handbag collectors and range in price from about $12,000-300,000. They are made in a variety of sizes, and different hides, including ostrich and crocodile. Each bag is hand-sewn with the company’s signature saddle stitching, buffed, painted, and polished. Every bag has a lock and keys, with the keys enclosed in a leather lanyard called a “clochette.” They are distributed in limited quantities on unpredictable schedules and have retained their iconic status through the years, even with such stiff competition in the luxury handbag market from makers like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel. 22

ometimes anything goes when it comes to dressing for weddings and other special events in the Golden Isles, but just because we’re an island destination that doesn’t mean flip-flops are proper gala footwear. Here’s a little style guide to dressing for the occasion. BEACH DESTINATION: for your beach wed-

dings, parties around the fire pit, and family seaside gatherings. Choose a fun, breezy dress in either a maxi or short length, keeping in mind that the wind might be a factor in how your skirt stays put. Sandals or flip flops are fine for this occasion since you’ll be walking in the sand. Simple hoop earrings, bracelets, and necklace are the perfect accessories. Add a woven clutch and straw beach hat (wellsecured) to add a more tropical style to a classic wedding look. GARDEN PARTY: for the afternoon wedding, garden party fundraiser, Sunday brunch or high tea. This is your chance to go pretty and feminine: pleats and pastels, florals and flounce. Choose colors that will complement a grassy, green setting. Nude or light-colored wedges will keep your heels from sinking into the soil and also add some length to your legs as well. Drop earrings add extra color or sparkle. Don’t forget sunglasses and a light wrap or cardigan if the afternoon event extends into evening. DRESSY CASUAL: for evening events that are

relaxed but with a touch of polish. Lean toward the dressy part of this style description. Think work attire that could go out for drinks with the girls after. Stay away from jeans, but tailored pants with an embroidered tunic or embellished blouse would work with a pair of strappy sandals. Or choose your favorite every-

O R

N O T ?

day dress and glam it up with a sparkly or colorful clutch and some bangles. FORMAL DAYTIME: think business luncheon

or brunch with the mother-in-lawto-be and family. This style calls for what is essentially cocktail attire without the evening shimmer, yet branches out with more color than the traditional little black dress. Prints can be stylish, but stay away from casual fabrics. Classic pumps and jewelry add just the right touch of elegance. COCKTAIL ATTIRE: also called black-tie optional

or semi-formal, for cocktail parties, dinners, and most evening weddings. Show some sass with silky or shimmery short dresses. Chiffon, charmeuse, silks and satins fit the bill. Of course you’ll want to show off some fantastic heels too. Metallics will set off the look, paired with some great bling. BLACK TIE: for the epic evening galas and most formal events. This is the chance to truly dress up and show off that gent in the tux, so go all out! Find a floor length gown that complements your figure and coloring. Show off those gorgeous shoulders if you’ve got ‘em, and treat yourself to a fancy up-do if you have long tresses! If you prefer a shorter Evelyne Talman silhouette, or the event is earlier in the day, choose a classic little black dress or someJos A. Bank thing in rich jewel-tones with elegant accents. Classic jewelry that makes a statement and a sparkling clutch will perfect the ensemble.

he world’s first pizzeria, Port’Alba, opened in Naples in 1830. The traditional pizza was a flatbread topped with tomato, oregano, garlic, and olive oil. It was called a marinara pizza for the seafarers’ wives who prepared them for their husbands when they returned from fishing trips. However, many credit the first true “modern-day” cheese-laden pizza to a creation specially made in 1889 by Don Raffaele Esposito, owner of Pietro Il Pizzaiolo, for the visit of Queen Margherita Teresa Giovanni and King Umberto I of Italy. The margherita pizza, named after the guest of honor, used ingredients that were the red, white, and green of the Italian flag: tomatoes, fresh basil, and a never before used ingredient made from the milk of water buffalo, called mozzarella cheese. Clearly, it was a hit. You’ll find a traditional margherita pizza on the menus of many of the 61,000+ pizzerias in the U.S. today – including Sal’s!

nsel Adams (1902 – 1984) was an American landscape photographer known for his stunningly clear black white images of the American West. With trustee David H. McAlpin and curator Beaumont Newhall, Adams was a key advisor in establishing the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. This was an important landmark in securing photography’s institutional legitimacy as an art form equivalent to painting. He was also a lifelong environmentalist. The U.S. Department of the Interior contracted him to make photographs of U.S. National Parks. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980 for his work and his persistent advocacy, which helped expand the National Park system.

raditional yoga poses (asanas) are named in Sanskrit, an ancient sacred language of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism that has existed for more than two-thousand years. Many poses are named after animals and nature. Chances are you’ve heard of “Downward Dog” (Adho Mukha Svanasana), the pose named after the natural stretch that dogs do when they wake. The cobra pose (Bhujangasana) uses the symbol of the sacred cobra and the awakening of dormant energy for its action. Inspired by observations of nature, the tree pose (Vrksasana) focuses on the way a tree grows its roots deep in the earth to enable it to stretch up into the sky. Saints, sages, and

Warrior poses (Virabhadrasanas) are named for the fierce warrior, Virabhadra, son of the god Shiva, emulating his qualities of courage, determination, balance and stamina. The restorative corpse pose (Savasana) that closes yoga classes comes from Shiva, the first yogi, god of destruction and letting go, demonstrating the ultimate surrender of dying and Patricia Ploeger deep peace. In 1995, the Cassina Garden Club petitioned the Glynn County Commissioners “with the purpose of stimulating and sustaining interest in an active protection of our birds” to “formally proclaim the Island of Saint Simons a “Bird Sanctuary,” with suitable laws for protecting all our birds from molestation, wounding, and slaughter by hand-thrown missiles, traps, shooting, etc., or the robbing of their

nests.” This proclamation was granted as well as permission to install at the entrance of the island “a suitable plaque stating that St. Simons Island is a bird sanctuary, as an appeal and reminder to tourists and natives alike.” While the Island Gateway Project was under construction, the sign was removed and reinstalled after the roundabout was completed; however it was later destroyed in an auto accident. In June, the Club celebrated the installation of a replacement sign and the island’s continued commitment to protect our feathered friends.

opefully we’ll be seeing more colorful butterflies flitting about the island this year. Live Oaks Garden Club recently refurbished the Butterfly Garden at Demere Park. The garden has been designed to welcome butterflies and encourage all four stages of butterfly development. There is plentiful milkweed in the garden now to invite the but-

terflies to lay their eggs there. The milkweed is an important food source for the caterpillars that emerge from the eggs within four days. After eating, they form a chrysalis, from which an adult butterfly will emerge in about ten days. The adult will fly away in search of food and water, so abundant flowers they enjoy as food and water sources have been placed in the garden for the butterfly to enjoy.

Live Oaks Garden Club has been responsible for the garden for approximately 15 years. The garden has been through many phases, but most recently was a native plant garden (weed garden). The club began the refurbishment project by identifying all the plants in the garden to see if they were butterfly friendly. They discovered that very few of the plants were good at attracting butterflies, so they removed most of the plants in the garden in January. The club did their homework by studying other butterfly gardens and identifying plants that were best for the butterflies that frequent our island. In March and April, they added about 200 new plants to encourage butterflies to visit and multiply.

by and enjoy this tranquil spot. It is enjoyed by many walkers and parents of children playing softball and skateboarding at the park. The Live Oaks Garden Club started in 1997 as an offshoot of the St. Simons Island Newcomers Group. Several members of that group wanted to stay together and at the same time learn how to successfully garden in the heat and sandy soil of Southeast Coastal Georgia. In addition, these members wanted to become involved in community gardening and landscaping projects. To supply funding for the community projects, they established the Live Oaks Garden Club Poinsettia Sale in 1999. Proceeds from the annual late fall sale go to the club’s designated projects, including the refurbishment and ongoing mainte-

nance of the Demere butterfly garden. Other projects by the garden club have included the award-winning Airport Trees Project and landscape of the Glynn Visual Arts Center, landscaping the Harrington and Gilbert Nature Trail properties, the roundabout at Demere and Frederica Roads, and the St. Simons Island Gateway. Their good works extend to Brunswick as well, where they planted a Live Oak Tree (The Justice Tree) at the Glynn County Court House, have donated and planted shrubbery at a Habitat for Humanity Home, and donated to and landscaped a Signature Square in Brunswick, and provided funds for irrigation in Mary Ross Waterfront Park. For more information about the Live Oaks Garden Club, visit liveoaksgardenclubinc.com.

The garden angels who did the dirty work included team captains Gail Nagle and Melinda Smith, dedicated diggers Christina Allen, Patrice Allgood, Jane Baker, Carol Bourque, Marcia Farber, Juanita Hunke, Konnie Maxwell, Marcie Mallin, Sydney Poole, Connie Shelnutt, Rosalyn Thomas, and treasurer, Beth Thornton. The stationary butterflies you’ll see “flying” throughout the garden were painted by local artist, Karen Keene Braswell, and represent the four most common butterflies that visit our island: Monarch, Tiger Swallowtail, Gulf Fritillary, and Painted Lady. The garden is always open, so everyone is welcome to stop

ne of the most highly rated tourist attractions in the Golden Isles is Cannon’s Point Preserve. In this 600 acre wilderness area, visitors can hike miles of trails, launch a kayak or canoe at Lawrence Creek, view seemingly never-ending streams and saltmarsh from a two-story Observation Tower, and visit the 38

remains of plantation-era structures built by slaves with tabby and handmade bricks. This is one of the nearly thirty properties owned and carefully managed by the St. Simons Land Trust that range from greenspace that adds to the island’s lushness and canopy, like Cannon’s Point, to “pocket parks” where guests can stroll, rest on a bench, and read interpretive signage about the environmental and historic features of the island.

In case you aren’t familiar with the Land Trust properties, we’re sharing some of their top spots to visit. Whether you are a visitor or a resident, the Land Trust invites you to take advantage of any free time you have in these summer months to stop by your favorite sites, or those you have yet to explore. Breathe in the beauty and enjoy the unique relationship with nature and history that the island has to offer.

Invitation to Explore

521 Arnold Road Purchased in 2014 by the Land Trust after its owners couldn’t bear the thought of the 200 year old live oak being axed for development, this postage stamp greenspace is a favorite of many longtime island residents because of the beautiful lone oak there known by locals as the “Hiring Tree.” According to folklore, the tree got its name because in the early 20th Century, unemployed construction workers often stood

by this tree and contractors and others needing day laborers would tap some of the men in the early mornings for temporary jobs. Children love running about on the lawn and families love the beauty of this historic tree, as well as its proximity to the beaches. 1810 Frederica Road For almost twenty years the Land Trust leased their offices, with employees sometimes work-

ing in hallways and sharing phones and desks. That changed earlier this year when staff were able to move into a renovated building at 1810 Frederica Road just north of Redfern Village. Acquisition of the property was made possible by a generous donor whose grant was restricted for this specific project. Previously the site was slated for a discount store that caused an uproar on the island but now serves as additional greenspace for the community. (continues)

the property. This is also a great place to start biking north to other Land Trust properties, including Cannon’s Point, which is a fourteen-mile roundtrip ride from 1810. In the true spirit of Southern hospitality, the Land Trust staff says, “Y’all come!”

Guests are welcomed to park their bikes at 1810, have lunch on a picnic table in the backyard, recharge, listen to birdsong, and enjoy the magnificent oaks on

Mildred Huie Museum 1819 Frederica Road Almost directly across the street from the Land Trust offices, is a half-acre greenspace where the

former Mildred Huie Museum was located for decades. Once the home (and later art gallery/ museum) of local artist Mildred Huie, this iconic property was purchased in early 2018. Although the building is no longer in use, it currently serves as an example of architecture rarely seen on the island. Many native and mature plants are on the property. Visitors can stroll along garden paths, rest on one of the benches, and read (continues)

about the history of the former home and those who lived there. John Gilbert Nature Trail 2470 Frederica Road This forty acre property was the first major acquisition of the Land Trust. Ben Slade, one of the founders of the Trust, remembers the day in 2002 when he received a call from Dorothy Gilbert, asking if he was interested in her donating the land in memory of her late husband John. According to Ben, he jumped into his car that very moment and drove to Dorothy’s home to discuss the offer. Today this pocket park contains a path that passes in front of John’s Tree, an enormous, ancient live oak with branches that seem to extend to the heavens. There is also a wooden boardwalk that provides stunning views of the island’s famous marshlands. One of the most visited parks on St. Simons Island, this mid-island spot is a perfect resting stop on a long bike ride, or a great place to walk dogs and share the vistas with children and guests. Cecily Holbrook, a local educator and member of the Land Trust, says that she, her husband and two small children love the “pockets of protected land” like the John Gilbert Trail, that they can “ride our bikes to and walk in search of hidden painted rocks and unobstructed marsh views.”

Old Stables Corner Northwest corner of Sea Island Road and Frederica Road For many, this wooded two-acre property is the most iconic corner on the island. Generations can remember taking riding lessons at the stables or meandering on horseback from the barn to Sea Island, and then galloping through the surf on Sea Island’s beach. In less than 100 days in 2010, the community came together to raise more than $2.5 million to save the site from development and to enhance and maintain the property. Little daylight shows at Old Stables Corner these days because of its huge live oaks and the dense canopy they create. This makes it the perfect shady spot for a picnic on a summer day and a time to remember one’s childhood. Bug and Becca Strother, lifetime island residents whose families settled on the coast generations ago, say that this beautiful place is their favorite place on the island “because we both used to visit the stables regularly as children.” Historic Harrington School 325 South Harrington Rd One of the last two solely African American schoolhouses on Georgia’s coast, the oneroom school was built in the 1920s for students of color. dren until desegregation in the 1960s. Forty years later, Isadora Hunter, a lifelong island resident who didn’t want St. Simons Island to lose a significant part of its African American heritage, donated her portion of the twelve acres surrounding the former school to help make it possible for the Land Trust and Glynn County to jointly purchase the property. Amy Roberts, a leading force in restoring and preserving the historic school for twenty years, says that the building was also a cultural center and a “meeting place for the community. It was where young men came to sign up for the armed services.” Today, Mrs. Roberts delivers presentations on the history of the school and leads African American heritage tours on the island. In addition, Harrington Community Park, which is contiguous with the grounds of the former school, contains 12 acres of woodlands and two ponds that serve as habitat for endangered wood storks. Harrington Preserve on Frederica 5704 & 5720 Frederica Road Not far from the historic schoolhouse, are a total four acres of greenspace – two acres on each side of Frederica Road. The acreage on the west side of Frederica was donated by the Sea Island Company in 2002, when it challenged the Land Trust’s members to acquire the two acres on the east side of the road. This beautifully landscaped little “preserve” contains walking paths and seating. If biking, it is a peaceful place to catch one’s breath before continuing your jaunt to the north. Guale Preserve 110 Lawrence Road History abounds at this 258-acre preserve that was once part of a family compound formerly known as Musgrove Plantation. For decades it was rarely seen by anyone who was not a guest at private events. In recent years, Musgrove has hosted dignitaries from around the world, and it was the site of Jimmy Carter’s first cabinet meeting after being elected president. But evidence of human occupation on the preserve goes back thousands of years and it was once home to different Native American tribes, including the Guale Indians (pronounced “Wah-lee”), the indigenous tribe from which the Preserve gets its name. Parcels of Musgrove were purchased in three phases by the Land Trust over a period of three years. Visitors can hike a series of trails or bike the two-mile loop. Recently a photographer who was on the property identified more than 70 species of birds. The preserve is also filled with native plants and a hickory forest. Currently Guale Preserve is open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily. Bring the whole family and enjoy a picnic on the grounds.

Alice Richards Botanical Trail 2201 Lawrence Road In 2008, the Sea Island Company donated twenty acres on Lawrence Road to the Land Trust and partnered with the organization to create the first new park of significance on the island in fifty years: Frederica Park. A $1 million grant from the estate of Alice Richards, a former part-time coastal resident, facilitated the development of the nature trail named in Mrs. Richards’ memory. Today the park and trail are managed by Glynn County. Thirteen interactive signs highlight the native plant species that have been reintroduced on the trail. There are also “faerie houses” among the plantings, delighting children of all ages. Inside Frederica Park there is a picnic gazebo, a children’s playground, a sports field, and a fenced-in dog park. The park is open daily and has public restrooms. Cannon’s Point Preserve Cannon’s Point Drive The island’s northernmost major attraction is a 608-acre peninsula that is protected by a perpetual conservation easement held by The

Nature Conservancy and owned and managed by the Land Trust. The largest land conservation project on St. Simons Island, Cannon’s Point Preserve is an extraordinary wilderness area, with more than six miles of river shoreline and salt marsh. The Preserve is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet and is home to the island’s last intact maritime forest. Scientific research and a ground-breaking reforestation project are taking place on site. The Preserve is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. Saturday-Monday. Visitors can bike or hike along trails and paths on the south end, take a break in the guest pavilion, fish or kayak at the waterfront, and stand among the forest canopy at the south-end observation tower. They can also walk or bike the two and a half miles to the north end, where the path is surrounded by undisturbed habitat and ends at the site of a former 18th century home. Here, guests can climb another observation tower that provides amazing perspective on the archaeological ruins of the former Couper Plantation, including outbuildings and slave quarters built in the early 1800s.

THE ST. SIMONS LAND TRUST was founded in 2000 by a group of community members who were concerned about overdevelopment on the island and were determined to help preserve the cultural and natural features of St. Simons Island. Today, the organization has nearly 1,500 members as well as more than 100 volunteers who assist with property maintenance and helping host the annual Oyster Roast fundraiser. To learn more about other Land Trust properties, become a member, or volunteer, please visit sslt.org or call their offices at 912.638.9109.

ne of the things which epitomizes island living is the ability to enjoy the vast array of beautiful waterways meandering through the marshes coupled with the diversity provided by the inlets to the Atlantic Ocean. The opportunities to explore those waterways have recently multiplied with the opening of a local branch of Freedom Boat Club on St. Simons Island. Freedom Boat Club has over 25,000 members nationwide, over 2,300 boats in the national fleet, and more than 190 locations. Most locals are familiar with Dunbar Yachts, the longstanding sail and powerboat dealership located at Morningstar Marina that has been offering boating opportunities to the community and its visitors since the 1970s. Lucy Bowie, one of the owners of Dunbar Yachts, explains the thinking behind opening the local Freedom Boat Club branch: “We are committed to providing opportunities for everyone to get out on the water. We had people come into the dealership who had either never boated before, and were a little daunted about becoming boat owners, or people who had owned boats but were finding the maintenance overheads to be burdensome. So, we decided to bring Freedom Boat Club to 46

the Golden Isles because it offers truly hassle-free boating.” With unlimited access to thousands of boats of various styles across the country, all members receive free unlimited training which caters to those with no previous boating experience and can even provide offshore certification. All training is performed by US Coast Guard Licensed Captains. New members Michael and Jackie Black rave about their experience. Michael says, “My wife and I just retired and moved to the Golden Isles. It’s been a lifelong dream to own a boat. Joining Freedom Boat Club was such a great alternative to owning for a fraction of the cost. Being new to the waterway and boating, Freedom Boat Club offers unlimited training and we have taken advantage of it. The staff, trainers and owners are knowledgeable and very friendly. Freedom Boat Club staff are committed to giving us a safe and fun way to enjoy boating. Freedom Boat Club walks the walk; it’s not just a bunch of talk!” Once trained, members have access to an online reservation system which they can access 24

hours a day to book a boat in the local fleet or at one of the other 190+ locations. “The reciprocal access to other clubs both in the USA and now worldwide is a great benefit for members,” says Lucy. “Whenever you go on vacation or away on business, you can enjoy time out with family and friends on the water and there are no additional fees for this.” Insurance, maintenance, dockage, and even cleaning is all included in the membership. The local fleet on St Simons Island already includes a variety of brand new deck boats and center console fishing boats. The members literally walk down the dock, get onboard their chosen boat and get straight out on the water. Member John Barker says, “I joined Freedom Boat Club of the Golden Isles in January of 2019. It’s a great way to enjoy boating without all the hassles of buying a boat. The Free-

Some members also report that they boat so much more as members of the club than they ever did as boat owners. Without the prep and clean-up, they don’t feel the pressure to set aside so much time to spend a day on the water. With an unlimited number of drop-ins, the prospect of walking straight down the dock and getting on a boat is the reality of membership.

For many, it’s a great way to spend family time and enjoy the true beauty of island living. Member Lauren Agresti shares, “The Freedom Boat Club has given us the ability to have quality family time out on the water and share the love of boating with our children without the hassle and stress of boat ownership. We love that we can get out to fish, take day trips up the rivers or to Jekyll then get right off and head home without worrying about maintenance, prep or storage. It’s the best way to boat in the Golden Isles!” Member Ann Talarico sums it up perfectly, saying, “To get out in the water and experience the marshes for us completes island living!”

hen you’re looking for a unique and downright exceptional whisky, it’s hard to beat Maker’s Mark. The opportunity to add your own personal touch to a barrel of the revered Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey makes it even more exceptional. Before we get to our journey to the distillery in Loretto, Kentucky to dip the distinctive red seal, let’s examine the many factors that play into constructing this smooth, handcrafted spirit. Start with the storied history of co-founders Bill Samuels, Sr. and wife Margie Samuels, 48

and their desire to construct smooth bourbon to share with friends and family. In 1953, this dynamic duo modified an old family recipe and was hands-on in the creation of this internationally acclaimed brand known for its certain “front-of-palate sweetness.” Margie Samuels created the Maker’s Mark name and label, as well as the instantly recognizable signature red-wax-dipped necks. She was truly a trailblazer in her day. Segue to the actual precision and consistency of its production, year after year. Maker’s Mark has been carefully handcrafted for three generations.

“Handcrafted” is a term that is thrown around liberally these days, but Maker’s Mark insists on keeping the process pure and true to its original roots. Even though it uses techniques that are quite labor intensive, the brand refuses to hand over time-honored methods to automation. It all begins with red winter wheat (as opposed to rye), corn and barley as its basis. Next up is exceptional filtration, for which they use on-site sourced limestone water. My husband Don, a fine spirit connoisseur, signed up to participate in the Maker’s Mark Ambassador Program some seven years ago. Having his name etched onto one of these exclusive 525-pound bourbon barrels was too intriguing and, frankly, too much fun to pass up. His barrel would go through the same meticulous aging process as others in production on site in Loretto. Periodic updates were sent via mail and email to Don throughout every year, with special gifts being sent during the holidays, including festive red ear muffs perfectly sized for the Maker’s Mark bottle in

our home bar. I delighted in dressing up our Maker’s bottle at Christmas and taking photos, while throwing together the obligatory eggnog or Don’s favorite classic Manhattan. Anticipation grew until we received notification in late 2018 that his barrel was indeed ready for consumption. A March 2019 date was set for the trip up to Kentucky to “fetch the juice.” With great expectation Don and I set out to claim the ultimate prize: his very own whisky collection, complete with personalized labels. With the help of our guide, Christopher, Don was schooled in the proper art of handdipping the bottle neck into the famous red wax (just about half way down), then quickly

This remarkable concept to attract brand ambassadors is wildly successful and a truly brilliant way to draw upon consumers’ already existing enthusiasm for the Maker’s brand. OPPORTUNITY ZONES MEAN BUSINESS FOR BRUNSWICK by Joey Strength

M

y number one recommendation to business owners for the remainder of 2019 is to consider how your business might benefit from the Investing in Opportunity Act legislation contained within the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act. The Investing in Opportunity Act authorized governors to designate up to 25 percent of low-income census tracts within their states as federal opportunity zones. Investors who make qualified investments of capital gains in these zones through a qualified oppor-

52

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

tunity fund may receive three forms of tax benefits: deferral of tax on the invested gains, partial forgiveness of the tax on the invested gains (up to 15 percent if the investment is made in 2019 and held for seven years), and full forgiveness of the capital gains on the sale of the investment in the qualified opportunity fund if it is held for ten years or more. This third benefit is the most significant one for many business owners. It allows a business owner to create a new business, relocate an existing business, or expand an existing busi-

ness in an opportunity zone and then structure the sale of that business, if held for more than ten years, without owing any tax (capital gains and perhaps depreciation recapture) on the sale. Officials from the U.S. Treasury have acknowledged the possibilities of this incentive and suggested that they hope it, along with the other incentives, will be significant enough to encourage the next Amazon to be started in an opportunity zone. Significant portions of Brunswick, including most of downtown, and parts of mainland

Glynn County have been designated federal opportunity zones. While the next Amazon may not locate in Brunswick, the program is likely to attract interest from new or existing business owners: (1) who intend to start or have a business that is likely to appreciate in value and, if new, can be located in an opportunity zone or, if existing, can be relocated into or expanded within an opportunity zone; (2) who have capital gain to invest in the new or existing business; and (3) who can utilize the invested capital gains to acquire or lease property in an opportunity zone so that, following the investment, 70 percent or more of the tangible property of the business is newly acquired or leased. For newly acquired property, the property can be property (such as equipment) not previously located in the opportunity zone and initially placed in service by the owner. For property already located within an opportunity zone (such as a building), it can be property to which substantial improvements will be made (over a period not to exceed thirty months following the purchase).

pany whose officers and employees manage the operations of its business from headquarters leased in the opportunity zone. The business performs services for customers both inside and outside the opportunity zone, but its equipment and supplies are stored at the business headquarters. Will an incentive like this one encourage a landscaping company or, for that matter, any other

business owner to relocate its operations from St. Simons Island, Atlanta, or some other location to the revitalizing Brunswick downtown? I think so. The program is already spurring real estate activity. The next and possibly more significant impact the legislation will have on the communities within opportunity zones will be the strategic decisions business owners make to locate in these opportunity zones – like downtown Brunswick – in the coming years.

Any other types of businesses may qualify, though there are additional tests that must be met, which are generally intended to have real operating businesses with employees and equipment located in the opportunity zone. BROOKE MARTIN INTERIORS LAUNCHED “I’m not working, I’m living the dream,” says Brooke Martin about her new interior design business, but she’s also helping others realize their dreams. Brooke, a St. Simons Island native, has worked in the interior design industry for over 15 years on both high-end residential and commercial projects. “When people dream of living here, they buy a property. My job is to help them transform it into their dream home.” Brooke works closely and creates lasting relationships with clients to ensure they’re getting exactly the space they imagined. While Brooke’s style gravitates toward “traditional with a twist,” she says, “Every room starts as a blank canvas and from there, we discover its personality. No two rooms should ever look the same, so not being wed to one certain style is a plus.” Her goal is to create a cohesive design that reflects the clients’ taste. Wish You Were Here

B

efore email, Instagram, and Snapchat, postcards were a popular means of communication during summer vacations. Postcards from the Golden Isles reveal scenes from the past and take us to a moment in time when the writer shared a new or pleasurable experience. A postcard depicting the Steamer Attaquin, dated July 12th, 1907, recalls the days before the Torras Causeway, when visitors had to take a ferry to St. Simons Island, with stops at Gascoigne Bluff and the Village Pier. The message reflects the sentiments of many through the years, “Hello, am having a fine time, only wish you were here. Please send me some money, for I may stay another week or more.” Earlier that year, Congress had passed an act allowing the back of a postcard to be divided so that a message could be written on the left side and the address on the right. In the 1920s, a postcard of the Ocean View House on St. Simons included a description of the accommodations and amenities. Rooms rented for $3.00 per day or $20$22 per week. The property advertised an artesian well, bathing suits for rent, and the “finest and safest surf bathing.” It also provided dining facilities for island visitors. According to the handwritten message on the back of the card, “The Arnolds own and run this place. We ate all our meals except supper here.” In 1957, a visitor to Jekyll Island sent a postcard depicting the original Sidney Lanier Bridge, which opened in June 1956 and shortened the trip from Brunswick. The central section had a vertical lift, requiring traffic to stop even when shrimp boats passed through the span. A toll was charged in both directions, and the writer commented, “The bridge is new. John just figured up that in 26 hours it has cost us $2.75 in tolls. ...Jekyll is beautiful, remote, and we saw a deer last night. (A live one on the hotel grounds.)” Between 1907 and 1957, postage for postcards rose from one cent to two. Today, the rate is $.35. This month’s images are representative of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s significant collection of local postcards, which spans over a hundred years.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the World War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast Guard Station. To learn more about the Society, its diverse programs, and the benefits of Society membership, please call 912.638.4666, or visit coastalgeorgiahistory.org.
