ON THE COVER: As we celebrate Irish Heritage Month and St. Patrick’s Day and welcome Scottish Heritage Days in March, a Celtic cross was a well-suited illustration for our cover. The fact that this one in the Wesley Memorial Garden on St. Simons Island is included as a stop on this month’s annual Christ Church Frederica Tour of Homes made it absolutely perfect. It seems only fitting that we start with one of St. Simons Island’s most photographed historical markers: the Celtic cross in the Wesley Memorial Garden, on the north end of the island. The 18 foot tall cross, cut from stone from Elberton, Georgia, weighs 15 tons and stands as the focal point of the garden. Its inscription reads: “Dedicated to the Glory of God and in memory of the Reverends John and Charles Wesley.” Captured beautifully in photo by Joe Loehle and pictured on our cover, this is one of the historic stops on the annual Christ Church Frederica Tour of Homes (read more about that on pages 26-28,) and is a popular stop for island visitors. The Wesley Memorial Garden was a dream of Albert W. Jones, Sr. of Sea Island Company to honor John and Charles Wesley, the Anglican priests who had visited St. Simons Island and were known for their roles in founding the Methodist church. That dream was realized by his son, when A.W. Jones, Jr. donated the property to Christ Church Frederica, an Episcopal church, and the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church (who later organized Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica adjacent to the garden) with the understanding that the two denominations would mutually establish and maintain the memorial there. Henry Green and landscape architect Candice Brewer designed and managed the construction of the memorial garden, and it was dedicated on June 12, 1988. Reverend Thomas Fitzgerald, Rector of Christ Church Frederica, Bishop Frank Robertson, founding pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica and Right Reverend Harry W. Shipps, Bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Georgia presided at the dedication. A trust ensures the garden will remain in perpetuity. It is a peaceful place for a walk and quiet reflection, and a visit when the more than 4,000 azaleas are in bloom is truly spectacular. There’s another Celtic cross memorial located in Queen Square in Historic Downtown Brunswick. That memorial is dedicated 22

knot are said to represent the Holy Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit but another explanation is the forces of nature and elements of water, fire, and earth.
The circle in the Celtic cross distinguishes it from the traditional Christian cross. Popular legend says St. Patrick introduced the Celtic cross when converting pagans to Christianity, combining the Christian cross with the pagan sun symbol to give newly converted followers the idea of the importance of the cross (or possibly to emphasize its superiority) by linking it with the circle that symbolized the life-giving properties of the sun. It must be noted for the record, however, that there are others who believe it originated with St. Declan of Ardmore, a 5th Century Irish saint who preceded St. Patrick. In any case, the use of the ringed cross in Ireland surged during a Celtic revival in the mid-19th Century and this cross became widely used not only as a religious symbol, but as an emblem of Celtic identity.
This is said to stand for eternal life and is believed to be one of the very oldest Celtic designs. This is another three-sided knot which stands for water, fire and earth, the forces of nature. These designs feature a single continuous line which represents oneness of spirit and unity.
Often Celtic crosses are decorated with Celtic knot designs. In or around 450 AD, before the Celts were influenced by Christianity, Celtic culture took the form of knots, spirals, plait, braid, step and key patterns to depict seven richly symbolic creations. These creations were: man, mammal, plant, insect, bird, fish, and reptile. For individuals of Welsh, Irish and Scottish heritage, Celtic knot designs can be seen as a source of great cultural pride. Although historians cannot agree on whether or not there are specific meanings for each design, a number of the most popular designs have had meanings attributed to them within the last 150 or so years.
TRINITY KNOT This is arguably the best known Celtic knot and is also called the Triquetra. The points on this three-fold
CELTIC SPIRAL KNOT
CELTIC LOVE KNOT This design features interlaced knots resembling two interlocking hearts, usually sitting in an oval shape, and represents the love between two people. It is believed that the Celts exchanged these knots in much the same way as we exchange rings in the modern age. The Celtic Oval knot is one of the oldest and simplest designs.
SHIELD KNOT This is deemed to be an ancient Celtic symbol of protection and was placed either on battle fields or near ill people as a means of warding off evil spirits or other dangers. Although the Shield knot can be made in a number of designs, its four distinct corners must always be included. Designs are usually comprised of thick strands with tight intertwined patterns as a means of depicting an unbreakable barrier.
S
o what is Celtic anyway? It’s more than just Irish and Scottish. The Celtic nation is defined as a cultural region and collection of geographical territories in Western Europe and the North Atlantic where Celtic languages and/or cultural traits have survived. In this sense “nation” means a people who share a common identity and culture and are identified with a traditional territory, in the same way we identify Native American “nations” like the Navajo and the Sioux. Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man make up the six Celtic territories. A Celtic language is spoken in each of these regions, with Gaelic languages spoken in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, and Brittonic languages in the remainder. A significant part of Europe was dominated by Celts, before the expansions of Ancient Rome and the Germanic and Slavic tribes, leaving behind a legacy of Celtic cultural traits. There are other territories in northwestern Iberia (particularly northern Portugal, Galicia, Asturias, León and Cantabria, covering north-central Portugal and northern Spain) that are considered Celtic nations due to their culture and history; however, no Celtic language has been spoken there in modern times. From the mid-1800s, and especially through the Great Famine around 1840, Irish migration to Scotland, Britain, Canada, and America increased. They weren’t the only ones heading to America either; it’s estimated that, from 1853, 50% of emigrating Scots chose to settle in the United States. Large regions of the United States were subject to migration from people of Celtic nations. Irish-speaking (continues)

Irish Catholics congregated predominately in cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. Scots were more prominent in the Southern United States, including Appalachia. When it comes down to Georgia, according to recent estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, more Georgians (more than 800,000) claim ancestry in Ireland than any specific foreign land other than England. And these Irish descendants can be found all throughout Georgia, with higher concentrations in areas of North Georgia and the counties along the coast. As we know well here in south coastal Georgia, the Irish and Scots began helping build Georgia from its earliest days. The first Irish settlers, mostly farmers seeking land ownership and religious freedom, arrived on the Anne less than a year after Oglethorpe’s establishment of the colony and founded Savannah in 1733.

Around 1760-1770, land that had belonged to the Creek Indians along the Ogeechee River was offered to settlers willing to cross the Atlantic and was advertised in Ireland, this resulted in the first “dedicated Irish settlement” in the state: the Queensborough community in what is now Jefferson County. Queensborough morphed into the newly created town of Louisville (Georgia’s first permanent state capital) after the Revolution. Families living in Northern Ireland who had Scottish roots also made their way to the new Georgia colony, and their descendants remain here today as the “Scotch-Irish” or “Scots-Irish.” About 122,000 Georgians claimed Scotch-Irish ancestry according to recent data from the Census Bureau.
When the wave of Irish immigration occurred due to the Great Famine, Southern cities like Charleston and Savannah saw an influx, with shipping routes running directly from southeastern Ireland to Savannah. Because emigration between County Wexford and Savannah was so great, today more people in Savannah claiming Irish ancestry have roots in that county than any other in Ireland. But while you might think Savannah has the highest percentage of people of Irish ancestry, census data says it’s about one person in 11 in Chatham County; whereas it’s about one in five in Chattahoochee County, near Columbus. Here in our neck of the woods? Glynn claims about 10% Irish ancestry, Camden 12.6%, Brantley 15.9% and McIntosh 11%. But Darien and McIntosh are where the Scots come in. Scottish Highlanders from Inverness were recruited by General James Oglethorpe, due to their fine reputation as soldiers, to assist in the defense of the colony. They established the port town of Darien along the Altahama River in 1736. Initially called New Inverness, the settlement was later renamed Darien in honor of “the Darien Scheme,” an unsuccessful colonization attempt at the Isthmus of Panama. Led by John McIntosh Mohr and Hugh Mackay, the Darien Scots built a fort to replace the abandoned Fort King George and served with Oglethorpe at the siege of St. Augustine in 1740. They also were instrumental in the expulsion of the Spanish invaders on St. Simons Island in 1742. The Scots brought their minister, John McLeod, from the Isle of Skye with them and introduced Presbyterianism to Georgia. In 1739, the Darien Scots protested the legalization of slavery in the colony. After the war with Spain many of them established plantations in St. Andrew Parish, now McIntosh County, an area created in 1793 and named for the family who originally settled the region. The Mackay name also lives on, and we’re reminded of it each time we cross the river via the Torras causeway.
C
eltic heritage is more than kilts, bagpipes, and whiskey, but those cultural icons are a good place to start. The origins of the kilt can be traced back to the 16th Century, when it’s well-established that both the Irish and the Scots wore a longsleeved linen tunic that reached the thighs or knees. It was not a traditional kilt as we think of them today. The Scots wore the tunics under a feilidh-mòr (great wrap) or belted plaid. This was a long length of heavy wool fabric, (often woven in a tartan pattern) wrapped around the body like a mantle or a shawl and intended to protect the wearer from inclement weather. The belted or great plaid is gathered into folds and belted around the body. This was the attire worn by soldiers on the battlefields. After the Jacobite Risings in 1746, fearing further revolt by Scottish clans, the government prohibited the wearing of kilts and tartan. It was not until the early 19th century that they once again became a symbol of Scottish identity and traditional Scottish dress. The modern kilt with the pleats and buckling we recognize today was introduced in the late 19th century. In Ireland, the long tunic had been discarded as everyday clothing, partly due to restrictive English laws imposed on the Irish, but also due to expense. Historians speculate that kilts and tartans came to Ireland about 1880. During the rise of Irish nationalism and as a response to the ongoing Anglicization of Ireland, the Irish national tartan was introduced as a symbol of Gaelic tradition. The traditional kilt associated
with Ireland is the mustard yellow Saffron Kilt, which often has shamrock appliqués down the pleat. Saffron Kilts were first worn by the Irish military in the British Army during the 20th century and are the most widely worn kilt in Ireland today. Tartans are where Scottish and Irish kilts vary the most, as each tartan has a different origin and meaning. Scottish tartans are a representation of a clan, and each family has their own tartan, distinguished by their surname. There are more than 25,000 registered Scottish tartans. Irish tartans are designed to represent the districts and counties of Ireland. You would wear a kilt made from the tartan of your county of origin. But it’s a little more complicated than that too, because you may also be representing your family in a region. Colors, patterns, and weave in a tartan are all distinctive and were designed to help families associate with their homes, whether that be a place or a clan. What goes on a kilt? (It’s NEVER polite to ask what’s under a kilt!) Pins with clan crests are often worn on the tartan by Scots on formal occasions. A Scottish wedding tradition is for a member of the “accepting” family to fasten their family’s crest on the spouse’s tartan, signifying acceptance and the union of the families. Irishmen often wear a shamrock crest on their tartan or simply leave it bare. That “fuzzy purse” men wear in the front of the kilt is called a sporran. It’s a traditional
kilt accessory for both Scots and Irish alike, because everybody needs a pocket to hold stuff. You can find sporrans adorned with Irish shamrocks or Scottish thistle or a wide variety of Celtic and other designs. Scots are invited to wear their kilts to the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan celebration of Scottish American heritage held annually (usually the last Sunday in January) at St. Simons Presbyterian Church. Legend has it that the kirkin’ tradition began in the years following the defeat of the Jacobites at Culloden in 1746, when tartan was banned. Families supposedly took small scraps of cloth to church (the kirk) to secretly have them blessed during the service. However, as no historical evidence exists to support that claim and the tradition is not observed in Scotland, that may be pure myth. The service at St. Simons Presbyterian includes music by the First Coast Highlanders, a Highland Bagpipe and Drum Band of up to 6 pipers and 4 drummers, and everyone is welcome to attend. (continues)

B
agpipes are an ancient instrument with a history that spans back to the beginnings of civilization and, to the surprise of many, did not originate in Scotland. While the Great Highland bagpipe is the most common and wellknown in the world, it is not the only type of bagpipe. The Irish also play bagpipes called the uillean or (elbow) pipe. The pipes played by the Scots in 1314 to urge clans to victory were not the three drone pipe we know today. A single drone was probably used until the 1500s, when a second drone was added, and the third in the 1700s. Like the wearing of tartan, the playing of the bagpipe was banned in Scotland after the Jacobite uprising. Bagpipes were classified as instruments of war by the loyalist government and anyone caught carrying them was punished just as if they had a weapon. Highland playing really emerged after the ban was lifted. Ironically, in the 19th Century, the English military appropriated the ancient Scots use of the bagpipe for intimidation and inspiration during war, and developed military marching bands to accompany troops throughout the colonies.

With Great Highland pipes, the player blows through a pipe to fill the bag and the pressure from the left arm on the bag sends and controls the flow of air to the melody chanter and three drones. The eight holes of the chanter can only produce a range of nine tones, spanning an octave and a tone or second. The sound is produced when the air is forced through a small double-sided reed made from cane or plastic. Highland pipers generally stand while playing and often walk slowly, measuring steps with the beat of the music. Small Lowland or Parlour pipes are a scaled-down, indoor version and are blown from a bellows strapped to the right arm. They produce a much quieter and more refined sound.
open end of the melody chanter placed and remaining on the right thigh, effectively closing the chanter when all eight holes are covered. The notes are produced by lifting one or more fingers off the chanter to open one or more holes, or lifting the end of the chanter off the leg while covering all the fingered holes. The range of the Irish chanter is two full octaves, and, with the addition of several keys, can be played chromatically. The double-sided cane chanter is longer and much more delicate then the Highland chanter reed. Think bagpipes with finesse!
The Irish Uillean (elbow) pipes and playing technique are entirely different. They are blown from a bellows located on the right arm, while the air is collected and controlled from the bag under the left arm. Pressure on the bag feeds the air to the reeds of the melody chanter, up to three drones, and three stocks, each fitted with regulator keys. The piper plays seated with the
If you hear the strains of bagpipes locally, it’s likely the beloved tradition of the Sea Island bagpiper’s sunset serenade to close the resort’s golf courses. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, you’ll also be able to see a strolling piper at dusk in the Historic District on Jekyll Island. Bagpipes also play an integral part of the St. Simons Island Taps at Twilight program on Memorial Day.

o, that leaves whiskey. If it’s Irish, that is. For Scots, it’s whisky, or if made in the homeland, Scotch. They both called it “the water of life” or “aquavitae” (uisge beatha or uisge baugh in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, respectively) and learned the art of distillation from monks traveling from the continent around 1000-1200AD. Without vineyards and grapes available, they turned to fermenting grain mash. The first written record of whiskey appeared in 1405, where it was recorded in the Irish Annals of Clonmacnois that a clan leader died after “taking a surfeit of aqua vitae” at Christmas. A 1494 record revealed that whisky distillation

was well underway in Scotland too because King James IV granted a large amount of malt to a friar for whisky production. In 1608, Old Bushmills Distillery was licensed in Northern Ireland, making it the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. A key difference between Scotch whisky and Irish whiskey is the distillation. Scotch whisky is distilled only twice in uninterrupted process stills. Irish whiskey undergoes triple distillation in pot stills triple the size of normal copper stills, giving it a marked lightness. This lightness balances the barley’s natural flavor which is retained in the Irish process by the use of raw and malted barley that had
been dried in covered kilns. Whereas in Scotch, the barley is wholly malted and first allowed to sprout. Peat smoke used in the drying process gives it its distinctive Scotch aroma. Getting the flavors right through distillation and “vatting” is the emphasis in making Irish whiskey. For Scotch whisky, they place higher value on the skills of a master blender who mixes various malt and grain whiskies following distillation to find the perfect flavor combination. Irish whiskey and Scotch are both aged in oak barrels (generally bourbon or sherry casks), but Irish whiskey is aged for a minimum of three years, one year longer than the two year minimum required for Scotch. While it’s generally agreed that Irish whiskey tends to be smoother than Scotch, a glass of The Macallan might just convert you. This year’s Tour takes place on Saturday, March 21 and includes two homes on St. Simons Island at East Beach and four homes on Sea Island that visitors will access via bus transportation from a parking area at Gascoigne Bluff. Interspersed with the homes on the Tour are historic stops. Christ Church Frederica and Parish House serve as Tour headquarters. There you will find light refreshments made from recipes from the Christ Church Cookbook, which will also be available in copies for purchase as well as other Tour of Homes souvenirs. All cookbook and souvenir proceeds and ticket sales from the Tour are donated to local charities that primarily benefit women and children. Last year, through the community’s support of the Tour and cookbook sales, the ECW was able to donate $70,000 to 31 charities. Guests are invited to tour the church, its grounds and cemetery, and to visit the Wesley Memorial Garden across the street, where you can see the Celtic cross depicted on our cover and the hundreds of gorgeous azaleas that surround it, which, hopefully, will be in full bloom. Tour Day begins at 10:00 a.m. and your schedule for visiting the stops will be guided by the wristband you’re issued for bus transportation. The St. Simons Island stops are all open until 5:00 p.m. and are accessible by car. New to the Tour this year is the addition of the World War II Home Front Museum. Admission is free with your Tour ticket. If you have not visited this wonderful museum that highlights the

servatory, artwork by the owner, and an incredible view are just some of the highlights here. The other historical Tour Stop of note on St. Simons Island is St. Ignatius Church at 2906 Demere Road. First established for former slaves in 1886 and rebuilt in 1898 following a hurricane, the church attracts visitors to see its beautiful stained glass windows and the hand carved alter rail, lectern, and other woodwork within. Also of note is the bell which came from a World War II Liberty ship. On Sea Island, you’ll find Tour Stops 5-8 to be a wide range of splendid architecture and interior design with details ranging from British cottage to Chinese Chippendale. Take note of the incredible artwork displayed, rich fabrics and embroidery, and other decorative flair that set each home apart. You’ll see wonderful entertainment spaces and whimsical appeal, lush gardens and inviting poolside escapes. There is no lack of “wow factor” in any of these Sea Island homes, so stroll leisurely and take it all in. Tour Day will be here before we know it, so make sure to get your tickets at the church, one of our local retailers (Cloister Collection, Evelyne Talman, H&H Lifestyles, Jekyll Realty, Maggie’s Boutique, Ned Cash Jewelers, Restoration Imports, Roberta’s, St. Simons Drug Co., Southern Finds, Tabby House, Two Friends, Viola’s Market) or online at christchurchtourofhomes.org. the Lynx Educational Foundation. “Frederica Academy takes great pride in its commitment to experiential learning and leveraging the Golden Isles as an outdoor classroom and hands-on laboratory. Captain Peacock and his team aboard the Tall Ship Lynx have been valuable partners in that regard. Over the past year, our teachers have collaborated with the deeply talented and passionate team of Lynx educators to design customized curricular experiences to optimize lessons about maritime history and marine biology life unique to our waters, marshes, and beaches. Each adventure has provided an opportunity for students to help navigate the extraordinary Lynx just as the explorers who designed and operated tall ships did in the early 19th century. The students’ experiences aboard the Lynx are a seamless series of STEM lessons that help spark a collective desire to learn more about applied mathematics and nautical engineering.”
here was not only a technological advance in ship building, it gave the U.S. an advantage over the British who did not have the ability to harvest from these local forests. At the outbreak of the war, the American Navy consisted of only 17 ships: eight frigates, two brigs, and seven assorted smaller vessels, including a few schooners. Of particular note was a frigate named the USS Constitution, because she was constructed with the Live Oak from St. Simons Island. The Constitution became wellknown for her actions during the War of 1812 when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships. She was memorialized in poetry and given the nickname “Old Ironsides” for her sturdy construction. Today, her home is in Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard. Due to the small size of the Navy fleet, President James Madison created his own “private Navy” made up of private vessels that were granted special permissions,
called “letters of marque,” to engage with British merchants shipping cargo on the high seas; these were called “privateers” and could not be charged with piracy for their acts against the enemy. The letter of marque acquired by Lynx cost her owners $15,000 in 1812 currency. Guided by Lynx’s educational mission, programs have been designed using “Best Researched Practices to Georgia’s State Standards” making Lynx a legitimate field trip destination under the guidelines of the Georgia Department of Education. While here in the Golden Isles, over two seasons Lynx has hosted more than 600 students from grades 4 through 8 and children attending Brunswick and St. Simons Island Boys and Girls Club programs. For school and Boys & Girls Club field trips trips, Lynx sails from both Brunswick Landing Marina and Morningstar Marina, and participating children are bused in for a sail on the St. Simons Sound that takes a little over two hours. The Lynx Educational Foundation, owner of the Tall Ship Lynx, has underwritten the expense, providing free access to children of the Golden Isles to a platform for personal development and self discovery with an underlying history lesson. John Pope also addressed the significance of this type of learning opportunity, “Perhaps the most valuable aspect of each Lynx outing is the indelible memory created of a shared experience with classmates having so much fun together aboard a beautiful ship in a stunning coastal setting. We are continually seeking partners and experiential learning opportunities that can help us prepare our students to be successful in college and adult life while also offering blissful childhood adventures whenever possible. been so eager to host our students and teachers aboard their world-class and spectacular floating classroom.” The Foundation operates using the theory, “If you build it, they will come.” We are counting on donations to follow the good work we do on deck. The Foundation is a donation supported registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, so anyone can help support the educational mission and continued access for students. Any and all help is appreciated. Lynx is establishing itself as a member of the Golden Isles community through these student programs and regular public sails in the local waters. We feel it is important to be involved in the community, whether as a Chamber of Commerce member or making Lynx available to charitable organizations as a method of fundraising for their benefit. We’re happy to say we have done this quite successfully. We’re also excited to share that Lynx will to play a role in this year’s Taps at Twilight Memorial Day program presented by the St. Simons Rotary. We have found true Southern hospitality here! The appreciation for the Tall Ship Lynx has been wonderful. In December, the Lynx Educational Foundation embarked on a relief mission trip due to the support and help from the St Simons Rotary with Beth Smith and Susan Imhoff obtaining donations and John Pope at Frederica gathering relief items and school supplies that enabled a sail to Grand Bahama Island where Rotary International of GBI received 800 lbs. of donated items for distribution to the hard-hit Abaco Islands. The Lynx received generosity from the sailing public and numerous people donated money for the acquisition of school supplies. During the planning and packing for the trip, people delivered food for the crew, and made them feel the Christmas spirit as their journey was about to take place. Finding accommodations for the demands and needs of a tall ship and a community that rises to the level of our need is a tall order,
but we have experienced a warm welcome here in the Golden Isles and know our efforts and back drop are appreciated. The ship is a world of its own; we are a small community and a family at the same time. Typically, our crew will consist of Captain, Chief Mate, Bosun, Engineer, two deckhands, and cook. While voyaging offshore Lynx sails with 11 crew members. Lynx sails over 20,000 miles a year, but this year we have found a winter home at Brunswick Landing Marina where we can use the winter maintenance period to work on the ship 6 days a week with a talented and diverse crew. During this period, Lynx is investing not only in the ship, but also in the community, by undergoing a major refit, including masts removal and deck work, as well as major work on engine and floor surfaces. Lynx’s guns will also receive attention and be delivered to Florida for reconditioning and service. The crew has moved off the ship and into a crew house. We also had a crew of shipwrights come in from Maine to work on the deck. They were so impressed with the set up at Brunswick Landing Marina that they are even considering purchasing several homes in the area. Attracting other ships to Brunswick for this kind of refit work and being able to offer crew housing is a tremendous value. Because the facilities are here and the climate is great for all kinds of production, it simply makes sense. Lynx will be underway again in April, sailing from Morningstar Marina. Weekends and sunsets are reserved for public ticketed sailings, while weekdays are reserved schools and other youth organizations. Lynx is also available for private charter, weddings and other special sailings. There are many ways to help – or maybe we can help you! We are only limited by what we do not create. Lynx’s maxim we sail by and carved into the ships wheel: “Be Excellent to Each Other and to Your Ship.” For more information about Tall Ship Lynx and its sailing and educational opportunities, visit tallshiplynx.org or call 978.479.2197.

here can you go to inspire your kids to reach for a fantastic career, talk to a NOAA Hurricane Hunters pilot, tour an airplane repair facility on wheels, and eat free hot dogs? At the 4th Annual Aviation Career Day on Saturday, March 7, you’ll be able to do all these things in one place – the St. Simons Island Airport—from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. The popular, free career expo and aircraft display has outdone itself this year with a dynamic slate of new exhibits, airplanes, and industry professionals accessible to middle and high school students and their parents. And as if that wasn’t enough, the Experimental Aircraft Association will be holding its famed Young Eagles Rally at the same time. Young Eagles flies kids ages 8-17 over the Golden Isles, rivers, and beaches as part of its career education mission. Aviation Career Day was started when local pilots were challenged by former Glynn County Airport Commissioner David English, a retired Air Force officer and seasoned industry pilot, to “do more than just talk” about two looming problems: the upcoming shortage of pilots and aviation technicians, and the need for more well-paid future careers for young people in the community. He rightly felt that the two matters could cancel each other out. And as it happened, quite a few people agreed with him, as the number of participants, guests and supporters grew over the years. This year, Golden Isles Aviation, SouthEastern Air Services, Inc., the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 905 (EAA), Civil Air Patrol Brunswick Squadron 072, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Glynn County Schools, and the Glynn County Airport Commission put in months of preplanning for the event. The news is full of reasons why their timing is impeccable. The deficit of pilots and aviation technicians has created a perfect storm in the industry. As the current pilot talent pool reaches mandatory retirement age, the global growth of aviation service has steadily expanded. The rise of low and ultra-low-cost airlines, along with the introduction of fuel-efficient regional aircraft has made it feasible to offer air service to more cities. The Boeing Pilot and Technician Outlook, published in 2019, indicated that over 800,000 new civilian aviation pilots and 769,000 new maintenance technicians will be needed by 2038. Today’s sixth graders will be 49 years old, and the graduating class of 2020 will be 56 by that time. They could already have three decades of a successful career in aviation behind them by then. Initially, the day was intended mainly for ROTC students, and those who took advanced STEM based classes at local high schools. The original committee invited other groups, including the Civil Air Patrol (continues) 36

and the EAA, to participate and bring airplanes to the St. Simons Island Airport for students to see. The inaugural year revealed the need to expand the program. “We noticed that whole families were attending with their high school students,” EAA President Jerry Latvala said. “And we were getting as much interest from middle schoolers as we had from the older kids. It’s a prime age to introduce new ideas.” The event took off, and it’s now attracting attention from other communities. Terra Winslett, Airport Property and Marketing Manager for the Airport Commission, has been approached for advice and best practices for hosting similar events from other airports across the country. When Glynn County Schools offered her the honor of serving as Principal for the Day at Glynn Academy, she took the opportunity to make sure that students knew about Aviation Career Day. That success encouraged her and other event organizers to visit local middle schools to invite those students to come. It worked. Last year, hundreds of young people and their families came to the island airport to take a close look at a variety of aircraft, from firefighting planes to a vintage DC-3, and to talk to industry experts about what their future might hold. This year, the list of exhibitors has taken a leap forward. It includes a huge C-130 Hercules airplane to be flown in by the

165 Airlift Wing of the Air National Guard, firefighting aircraft from the Georgia Forestry Commission, several different types of helicopters, and a host of privately-owned planes. Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation’s FAST truck, a state-of-the-art mobile aircraft service unit, will also be available for tours. Over the years, organizers recognized that offering students and parents the chance to speak one-on-one with aviation professionals became increasingly important. This year, Commander Nate Kahn, pilot with the renowned Hurricane Hunters of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will join other experts who will share their background and experience. Representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and the Delta Air Lines Propel Pilot Career Path Program will be ready to provide information about career options. Families can discuss degree programs and technical training certification with officials from Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University, and Middle Georgia State University’s (MGA) aviation program. Access to education is an issue for today’s high school students. Since a number of well-known aviation schools are experiencing record enrollment requests, aspiring pilots and technicians can find themselves in the anxiety-producing

position of being “wait listed.” Embry-Riddle’s highly selective program now accepts only 59% of its applicants, compared to 80% only five years ago. Georgia’s students have an advantage in considering MGA, where the respected new aviation curriculum is growing quickly. Not only can in-state students get a top-quality education, but they can access the HOPE program of grants and scholarships to defray the cost of reaching their aviation career goals. Currently, MGA is able to accept all qualified applicants, according to Cheryl Carty, Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management. An introduction to the wide range of future opportunities has always been the primary goal for Aviation Career Day, noted Deputy Commander Bill Cozine of the Civil Air Patrol’s Brunswick Squadron 072. “Aviation offers the chance to serve the nation in the military, but there are ways to serve your hometown as well,” he pointed out. “The Civil Air Patrol performs a daily Sundown Patrol here locally to search for any emergency that can be seen from the air. We’ve found distressed boaters, lost hikers and accident locations in remote areas. Medical flights such as air ambulance operations will continue to need skilled pilots and crews. For pilots who can volunteer their time and use of their planes, organizations like Angel Flight provide a very valuable service for patients who can’t fly with commercial air

carriers for medical reasons. We’ve even had local pilots volunteer to fly injured wildlife to specialized treatment centers.” One of the most popular activities at Aviation Career Day is an opportunity to operate a flight simulator, with instruction from experts with the Civil Air Patrol. Far from a video game, the simulators deliver an authentic flight experience that requires concentration and dexterity. Students who are mechanically gifted and have technology interests would do well to consider aviation maintenance careers as well. Middle and high schoolers have the advantage of being native technology users, so the trend toward innovative training methods like augmented reality and digital troubleshooting are familiar educational platforms. Some jobs
require a two-year training program, followed by a certification that can open doors to excellent starting salaries, and opportunities to work all over the world. The eagerly anticipated Young Eagles Rally will run concurrently with Aviation Career Day. The wealth of experience represented by EAA pilots is impressive. Pilot members of the local chapter, who volunteer their time and the use of their own personal aircraft, average 45 years in the cockpit and 12,000 hours of flight time. Every flight is prefaced by a quick orientation to the airplane and some information about careers in the field. Although many Young Eagles sign up weeks in advance, young people who want to fly should still register and be put on a wait list if the
flight roster is full when they go online. Should an opening occur before the event day, the next person in line will be notified. Anyone who remains on the wait list this time will be automatically transferred to the top of the order for the next rally, scheduled for the fall of this year. Aviation Career Day will be held in the Museum Hangar at 1759 Demere Road at the St. Simons Island Airport. A free hot dog lunch will be served to all guests. Pre-registration is requested. Forms can be accessed online via a link located in the Events section on the bottom of the Glynn County Airport Commission’s home page at flygcairports.com. Attendance and parking are free. It’s a great opportunity to inspire students in our community to reach for the sky and its wideopen possibilities.

TIME, OPPORTUNITY & DESIRE BY RICHARD ALTMAN
We received some very puzzled looks when we told people about our upcoming trip to South Georgia Island and Antarctica. They asked, “Why would you want to go there?” Truth is, we wanted an adventure and were supposed to go with college friends two years ago, but things got in the way and we had to cancel. When situations changed, and we still had the time and desire, we took the opportunity to re-book to Antarctica. Fewer than 30,000 people a year visit this frozen land of whites, greys, and blacks with unique animals, no inhabitants, and pristine landscapes. The cruise line we traveled, Seabourn, is one we have traveled on several times previously. They offer adventure with very nice amenities along the way.

hen you get the opportunity to fulfill one of your bucket-list adventures, don’t hesitate; it may well exceed your expectations. Our cruise to South America, South Georgia Island, and Antarctica was amazing and proved to be more than we dreamed. Buenos Aires, Argentina, Santiago, Chile and the other cities and towns we visited showed how influential the Europeans were over the indigenous people. All areas of South
American life, language, religion, architecture, even the food, showed a touch of Europe. The majestic landscapes of South Georgia Island and Antarctica with the penguins, seals, birds, whales, icebergs, and the massive mountains were grander than we expected. It is a world of black, white, and grey, with a few patches of color. The brilliant oranges and yellows on the penguins, the red and oranges of the lichens on the mountains, the dull greens
of the so called Antarctica grasses, the shades of blue skies, the deep blue of the ice on the icebergs, even the color (and smell) of the waste of 150,000 penguins was beyond what we’d imagined. Being able to walk on the Islands and Archipelago of Antarctica was truly memorable. We walked with several different penguin species: King, Gentoo, Adelie, Chinstrap, Macaroni, and Banded. was the Emperor Penguin. They live farther inland, to the south, in an even colder environment. We also walked among different types of seals: elephant, fur, Weddell, crabeater, and leopard. Neither penguins nor seals are afraid of humans and as walked within two or three feet of both, they were calm around us. We were told that during mating season they can get a bit rowdy. On land, seals and penguins coexist within a few feet of each other. In the water, where penguins feed, the seals become predators. Birds we saw included the Antarctica Shag, Albatross, Petrels, Skuas, Seagulls, and Terns. The whales seen by our group included Humpback, Southern Right, Blue, Antarctica Minke, and Orcas (killer whales), that were all putting on a show of diving and eating. Our trip took us as far south as the 66th parallel, into the Antarctica Archipelago, but not to the South Pole, several thousand miles farther south. Antarctica is the fifth largest continent, it has no permanent inhabitants, with only a few scientists and some military outposts, mostly for research and security. The countries surrounding Antarctica have agreed to a Code of Conduct, including no permanent structures, and protection of the animals and the land. These codes restrict the size of ships who may stop and disembark visitors onto the land. Those of us fortunate enough to go on the land are schooled in what we can and cannot do and how to properly leave Antarctica exactly as we found it. 42
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
Our ship’s crew included a 19-member expedition team who led our adventures. This team was made up of PhDs and other highly trained and educated people who have visited these frozen lands dozens of times. They were experts in fields such as biology, botany, anthropology, geology, and history. The group gave 3-4 lectures a day to keep us informed about upcoming activities, the possibility of seeing certain animals, and how to treat the animals and the land. The expedition team also acted as Zodiac drivers, on-land directors, and security. We even had a medical team on land each time we disembarked. Within the expeditionary group was a photographic expert who helped many of us expand our knowledge of our individual cameras. At the end of the trip, he produced a documentary using his videos and photographs as well as many taken by the passengers, all set to music. Our ship, Seabourn Quest, a 650’ long and 85’ wide vessel, was specially outfitted, including hull reinforcement, to withstand the harsh environment. With 229 staterooms, its maximum passenger load is 450 and it carried 3 captains: The Master, a Staff Captain (second in command), and an Ice Captain, whose job it was to maneuver us though fields of icebergs, making sure we did not play Titanic, during the portion of our trip through lower Patagonia, The Beagle Channel, The Magellan Straits, the Chilean Fjords, and all the way to San
The previously mentioned Zodiacs (rubber boats with a motor, no seats, and a rope to hold onto) were our means of transportation onto South Georgia Island and Antarctica. With no towns, cities, or villages in Antarctica, there are no land-side docking facilities. The ship anchors in a bay or lagoon, and we would exit the ship onto the Zodiacs for a mile or two ride to the land, where we’d be among the animals. Sometimes we spent up to two hours on the Zodiacs riding by and around icebergs looking for whales, watching seals sunning, and watching groups of penguins feeding in the open waters. It was summer in the Southern Hemisphere, yet Antarctica and South Georgia Island had temperatures much colder than our St. Simons Island winters. Most days it was 1° Celsius (about 33-34° Fahrenheit). We started the trip in Buenos Aires, Argentina and ended in Santiago, Chile, where the climate and temperatures compared to our early spring. Back to my newest friends, the penguins. They are the funniest little animals, waddling around, sliding on their bellies, moving back and forth in a pack deciding when to jump into the water. Walking so close to these animals, they appeared to look up at us with inquisitive expressions, as if to say, “you are a funny looking penguin.” They did not scatter when we, very carefully, walked past them. They are not frightened by humans. We tried to keep our distance, close enough to watch but not to impend their movements. Of course, that is rather difficult with 150,000 penguins and hundreds of seals on the rock beaches. Penguins breed during the summer months, lay their eggs, and tend their nests (both mother and father), on land areas we visited, but spend much of the year in open water in the ocean where they are vulnerable as meals for seals and orcas. We arrived in time to see 2-3
day-old chicks peeking out from under Mom or Dad. The chicks are born with a white pecking tip used to break the shell from the inside when the time is right. This beak tip falls off in a few days from these grey fuzzy balls of fur who make noises and beg for food. By the end of their summer, in mid-late March, the adult and newborn penguins will have molted and grown their winter feathers. We were prepared for rough seas leaving Antarctica heading north toward Cape Horn at the bottom of South America, across the Drake Passage. This stretch known as the most hostile piece of water anywhere in the world, was calm (1-2’ seas with a very light chop) the days we passed through, they called it the “Drake Lake.” We did get our share of rough waters leaving Punta Del Este, Uruguay on our second full day at sea. We encountered snow, winds reaching hurricane force (72-74 mph), with 6-7-meter (21-23 feet) seas/waves. These winds forced the captain to alter course. These days, as well as a few others during the cruise, caused major rocking and rolling on board the ship, hanging on to whatever was close was the regime of the day. There was a long line at the infirmary to see the ship’s doctor to get sea sickness meds. On the fourth day out, everything was worth the rough seas, when we awoke to see our first
penguins and seals at Grytviken, South Georgia Island. Only a few humans reside on the island, and only during the summer. This settlement is an abandoned commercial whaling station. Thousands of whales were killed and Richard and Andrea Altman
dragged to this and other similar locations on South Georgia to obtain whale oil. Thank goodness whaling is now prohibited and the large metal boiling tanks and 12-15-inch chain links and other equipment currently sit rusting away in the settlement. Only 30,000 people visit Antarctica each year and many of those only get a “drive by” because of the multi-country agreements permitting only ships carrying less than 500 people to stop and take excursions onto the Antarctica Continent. The agreement/rules make every attempt to prevent harm to the land and to the animals. We visited a very dry, extremely windy, uninhabitable place for
humans and most animals. It is a location of immense beauty and magnificent landscapes that needs our continued protection, so others may enjoy the Continent of Antarctica. Now we are asked, “Are you glad you went?” It was the most awesome 4 weeks we have ever spent. Each day was more exciting than the previous. However, we could have done without 3 days of continuous hurricane force (72-74 mph) winds. Would we return? We would depart tomorrow and repeat the entire amazing adventure. The next question is “Where else are you planning to go?” We have never spent much time around Great Britain and, as we are about to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, we are pulling out all the stops to fill a few additional bucket list items: Normandy and Bordeaux in France, and Bilboa, Spain to see a wellknown Guggenheim Museum; then around the entire British Isles with visits to Scotland, Ireland, N. Ireland, and Wales. What else? In 18-months, we are planning another adventure on Seabourn to Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland. The ship for this adventure is still being built and will have a 6-person submarine on it. Some cruise lines are becoming more adaptive with itineraries and excursions to lesser traveled and more unique places. Time, opportunity, and desire make our planned adventures possible.

Know Your Deductibles Save Money & Surprise Costs by C h r i s Te m p l e t o n , M o r r i s & Te m p l e t o n I n s u ra n ce
A
t Morris & Templeton Insurance, we want you to get the most out of your insurance policy. The first step in doing so is understanding the role deductibles play when insuring your home, your car, or your boat. A deductible, simply put, is the amount of money you would have to pay out of pocket in an insurance claim before your coverage plan actually kicks in. Should an accident occur, the deductible is the amount of money you have to come up with before a claim gets paid by your insurance company. Then, the amount of the deductible is subtracted from your claim payment. So why do they even exist? Deductibles protect you! They are the best way to share the risk between you, your insurer, and the policyholder. In most cases, the larger your deductible, the less you pay in premiums. But it’s not quite that simple, especially when living on the coast. Deductibles, and the premium for each, are
highly dependent on your property’s location, and its likelihood of a natural disaster to occur.
it will give you that added sigh of relief during the dreaded hurricane season.
The most common type of deductible is “All Other Perils” Deductible. Most homeowners, no matter the location, will see this on their insurance policy. Then there are three other forms of deductibles we need to understand. Wind and Hail Deductibles go into effect when the damage is caused by any wind or hail. Named Storm Deductibles are the next option. This is a big one for our coastal region and includes the damage caused by a tropical storm or hurricane. The final category is the Hurricane Deductible, as expected, this is a much higher insured retention. It will only go into effect if the damage was caused during hurricanestrength winds within 72 hours of making landfall. For property owners in areas prone to tropical systems, like our own, the Hurricane Deductible is an option to highly consider as
Deductibles are either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the total amount insured. Most often, these types of insurance take form in a percentage. Let’s say, for example, you have
a homeowner’s insurance policy of $750,000 and a 2% hurricane deductible; disaster strikes and you are now responsible for $15,000. Now is the time to look over your insurance policy and know your deductibles. Morris & Templeton Insurance helps you understand the difference so you can avoid any surprises the next time we hear the threat of a hurricane.

COME PLAY! The 12th annual bridge luncheon sponsored by the Hospice Auxiliary will be held at Marsh’s Edge, the generous underwriter of the event, on St. Simons Island, March 19th from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All proceeds from the luncheon are directed to the non-profit Hospice of the Golden Isles to support the important services they provide. Bridge and canasta players are invited to bring their cards. “We have bridge clubs, casual foursomes and couples playing any format they chose. It is strictly a social event with no pressure; just a pleasant day with friends,” said Teryl McBurney, event Chairman for the Auxiliary. “The venue at Marsh’s Edge is lovely and their executive chef prepares a beautiful luncheon and dessert. Many local merchants donate door prizes (like a fabulous dinner for 8 at Bonefish Grill) and the 50/50 raffle is always popular. Registration is $45 per person or $180 per table. Space is limited. Please mail checks payable to Auxiliary of Hospice of the Golden Isles to Teryl McBurney at 307 Kingsmarsh Way, SSI, GA 31522. RSM CLASSIC CHARITABLE GIVING TOPS $17 MILLION The Davis Love Foundation recently announced that the 2019 RSM Classic raised $4,603,021.12 for children- and family-focused charitable organizations. This brings the ten-year total raised to more than $17.6 million. “The PGA TOUR has a long history of giving back, and the Davis Love Foundation is honored to be a part of the $3 billion the organization and its tournaments have provided in all-time charitable giving,” said Davis Love III, Team RSM member and tournament host. “We’re thrilled with the amount raised through the tournament in 2019, and look forward to continuing our charitable giving as we celebrate the 11th year of The RSM Classic and the first year of a new decade. This level of giving is due in large part to the dedication of the Davis Love Foundation staff and our incredible partnership with title sponsor RSM.” The 2020 RSM Classic returns November 16 – 22. A VIEW FROM AROUND THE VAN The Island Players’ spring production, directed by EIL’s own David Butler is Two on the Aisle, Three in a Van by Mary Lynn Dobson. Sometimes the best show isn’t on stage, but in the parking lot. That’s the case with this comedy showcasing a stellar season at the Neighborhood Actors Summerfun Repertory Theatre. The fun and unusual twist is that the point of view comes from the unsung heroes who call the show, man the spotlights, sew the costumes, count the tickets, and suffer through every flubbed line, forgotten prop and missed cue. Performance dates
at the Casino Theatre are March 6-8. 23-15, 20-22. Show time is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 3:00 p.m. Purchase advance tickets at theislandplayers.com.

lantation Point is designed to enjoy the natural beauty of its surroundings. Bright sunshine mornings give brilliant hues from its eastern exposure. The terrace, elevated above the lake and lawn is a wonderful spot to enjoy lounging or brunching with lake breezes. In the afternoon, sitting on the terrace and watching the magnificent colors of the evening sun above expansive marsh views, one may see the nightly deer parade across the lake, or the reflection of a brilliant rising full moon. Visitors remark on their enjoyment of soft breezes bringing the fragrance of jasmine, wisteria, citrus and pine and conversations of its colorful history. Mounds of oyster shells and pottery found nearby tell us that long before our time, nomadic Guale tribes enjoyed these treasures of nature. It is easy to recall that the beauty that we take for granted inspired explorer Jean Ribault in 1564 to declare that here was the “fairest, fruitfullest and pleasantest he had ever seen.” Sir Robert Montgomery in 1717 as he sought to establish a Georgia colony called it: “the most delightful country of the universe”! For over 250 years Spain asserted a claim to the Georgia coast, establishing missions and converting the Indians to Christianity by “cross and crossbow”. Researchers performing archeology surveys on the Fendig property concluded that a Spanish mission was located near Fort Frederica. However, as British colonial development moved south to Carolina and threatened Spanish claims and in 1702 Spain closed its last Georgia outpost, known as Santo Domingo de Talaje, and retreated to St. Augustine, never relinquishing their claim to Georgia. In 1736 James Edward Oglethorpe arrived determined to create a colony
as a defensive buffer against the claims of Spain. He selected a bluff on the south branch of the Altamaha River just north of Plantation Point with visibility north and south from the midpoint of St. Simons Island. He began a settlement which he named for Frederick, the father of King George II and son of King George III. With settlers from many parts of Europe and reinforced by Scottish Highlanders, the town of Frederica at one point had a population of more than 1000, and extended beyond the fort to near present day Plantation Point. Fort Frederica eventually became one of the largest fortifications in Colonial America. Its purpose was tested when on July 7, 1742 an armada of 50 galleons and around 2,000 select Spanish troops captured Fort St. Simons on St. Simons sound, and marched north to eradicate Frederica, defended by 650 men, determined to end British Colonial rule. Two battles fought on that day resulted in a victory by Oglethorpe’s troops and the end of centuries - old Spanish claims to “the debatable land.” The Bloody Marsh Battle is well known but earlier that day “a fierce battle considered the most important event determining the Spanish defeat was fought.” This battle became known as the battle of Gulley Hole Creek, a creek that meanders across the Plantation Point marsh from the Dunbar River to pass near Frederica. Early on July 7 Indian scouts spied the Spaniards as they approached the Marsh and alerted the Fort. Oglethorpe himself led the charge of Highlanders, Rangers and Indian allies and rendered such heavy losses to the Spanish party that they retreated to the South and eventually abandoned St. Simons Island for good.
Adair 2_Layout 1 2/13/20 3:03 PM Page 1
A report of that Battle is described a 2019 publication by National Park Service archeologist Michael Seibert, entitled “A Converging Storm” which is highly recommended reading. But the heyday of Frederica was short-lived and by 1752, the fort was virtually abandoned. Some of the early settlers remained with lots and large land grants from the crown. Farms were established and while Frederica remained the social and economic center of Glynn County, the period between 1756 and the Revolution witnessed a transition into an agricultural era of large cotton and rice plantations. Orange Grove Plantation which included the present Plantation Point was one of 11 major Island Plantations. James Bruce’s land grants extending south from Fort Frederica to include the bluff at Dunbar
River and the large marshland through which Gulley Hole Creek runs was given to his daughter Rebecca who married Maj. Samuel Wright and their home was at Orange Grove on the Dunbar River. The home called “Rose Hill” was featured in writings of Eugenia price, Burnett Van story, Margaret Davis Cate and was later the home of George and Mary Wright Abbott. The land passed through deed and marriage through many generations including the Bruces, Wrights, Abbots, Harrisons and Fendigs, and was known at different times as Wrights Landing, Orange Grove Plantation, Rose Hill and Dunbar. In 1927, the property was brought back into the Fendig family by Albert and Gladys Gowen Fendig and named “Dunbar Acres.” In the early 1960s, a 60 acre parcel of land and marsh extending to Gully Hole creek was acquired by Joyce and Albert Fendig. Named “Plantation Point” it was reached by a private road near the Old Military Road to Frederica named Old Plantation Point Road. In 1968 the Fendigs dug a three-quarter acre deep lake fed by a deep artesian well and began Landscaping including azalea planting's around the borders of the large yard with camellias located in separate plantings. In 1968 construction began on their home sited by famed Sea Island landscape architect Miesse Bumgardner to take advantage of views easterly with the morning sun, southerly over the lake, and westerly to provide a vista over the wide marshes to the distant mainland. A huge terrace was designed to provide a raised viewpoint extending from the large living room. The terrace paved by hand made tabby supports an arbor leading from breakfast room on which wisteria vine has been woven to provide shade and fragrant spring blooms providing cascades of blooms reflecting vividly in the private lake. On the Terrace is a tabby pool flowing over an ancient tabby structure and plantings of shrubs and trees creating a pleasant transition from the terrace to the lawn below. It has become a tradition of plantation point to set aside the world affairs at "bull bat" time and with a cocktail in hand enjoy the magnificent evening. Birds abound and a multitude of feeders attract the most interesting of birdlife. Across the lake Great Blue Heron's, Egrets and other wading birds build nests in the towering pines across the lake while herds of peaceful deer feed across the lawns. Plantation Point affords peace and privacy in a world of beauty. Plantation Point is reached by a private road bordered easterly by a green space converted from a golf course for private enjoyment. The private road named “Old Plantation Point" was historically a military road leading to Fort Frederica from Orange Grove Plantation. The drive to the Plantation Point residence traverses an oak bordered segment before entering the open lawn and circular drive emphasizing old South flavor of the columned home. On either side of the circular entry are plantings of camellias bordered by hedges and tabby landing and walks. Unique plantings of the rare "Lord Holly" add to the ambience of plantings along the drive. Entering the house through double walnut entry doors the foyer reveals a handcrafted circular stairway. Situated at the southern portion of the house is a large living room with fireplace and views in three directions. Adjacent is the formal dining room with magnificent views over terrace and marsh all with high ceilings and wide oak floors. The kitchen overlooks the breakfast area with views to marsh and terrace. The den is lined with bookcases and features a gas fireplace supplied by the 400 gallon propane tank located in a garden planting. The adjacent bath is equipped with a walk-in tub featuring a low rise entry and supplemental heating. An oversize residential elevator permits access from ground level to second and third floor levels. The third level features three bedrooms and office. The master bedroom extends through the house giving views from East to West to the beautiful grounds and lake and has a private balcony permitting unique views of the landscape. A 12 foot rocking chair porch extends along the eastern portion of the home. The master bedroom has a tabby fireplace patterned to accept 22 inch logs for gracious winter fires.
Adair 3 - Dee W_Layout 1 2/13/20 3:03 PM Page 1
A large shower features a thermostatic control for hot water comfort. A Generac 27 KV generator supplies full power to operate all utilities with comfort in the event of power loss fueled from the propane supply. The Terrace is also supplied with Propane connections to enable easy grilling and mobile heaters. Major modifications to the House were designed by noted architect John Rentz and were completed in 1990 and again in 2010. Scheduled service is continuously provided to keep the home, yard and facilities updated and maintained. Performance during recent hurricanes have proven the structural ability of the home. Flood insurance is reasonable because of the elevation of the house. There are no HOA fees and the private Old Plantation Point Road is maintained adequately by the five neighbors at small expense. The deep artesian well provides excellent water and sewage is via County utilities. Oyster roasting is a great Island tradition and Plantation Point has a secluded area behind massive azalea planting “set up “ with party house to make this fun. After feasting, conversations abound around a fire pit near marsh’s edge. The party house with cypress panel kitchen has a separate potting room conveniently near the garage. The 10 acres of Plantation point can be pictured as 2 distinctive tracts. The house and lake have 5 acres of landscaped yard with irrigation for lawn and shrubbery while another 5 acres south of the lake has been kept in its natural island growth. This adjoins a dedicated conservancy area which adds to the privacy and enjoyment of the wildlife. Plantation Point oversees a vast marsh of several hundred acres with historically favored status as Crown Grant ownership. An added bonus is the 3-5 acre Albert’s Island which we have left unimproved for native life. Plantation Point is uniquely situated at mid-island’s western shore, protected by the Sea Palms green space on the East and nature on all sides.
An advantage is that it can be reached without encountering distance and traffic of north island homesites and the traffic and congestion of the Southern portion of the Island. The enjoyment of living on this special part of St. Simons can be seen throughout the years of history from Indians, Colonial, Plantation to the present. Call Adair for a private tour and you might find yourself at home.

Pink Chapel: Linked by Legend to a Fatal Property Dispute
T
here is a small chapel on the grounds of the former West Point Plantation, on the north end of Frederica Road, known as Pink Chapel. Built by the owners of West Point, the Hazzard family, the structure gained its name and color from the pinkish lichen that grows only in dense shade and colored the chapel’s tabby ruins. Island legend would say, though, that both the chapel’s construction and color have to do with bloodshed over a vicious property dispute. Col. William H. Hazzard purchased West Point in 1818, while his brother Dr. Thomas F. Hazzard acquired the nearby Pike’s Bluff tract in 1827. One of the plantations adjoining Dr. Hazzard’s land, known as The Village, was owned by the Wylly family. Over several years, Dr. Hazzard and John Armstrong Wylly had a hostile dispute over the
boundary lines of their plantations. The issue came to a head in late 1838. The December 6th issue of the Brunswick Advocate newspaper described in detail their final argument. Hazzard reportedly sent an inflammatory letter to the elderly, widowed mother of Wylly. In response, while both were in Brunswick, Wylly confronted Hazzard and struck him with his cane, before the two were pulled apart by other gentlemen. Cooler heads did not prevail, though, and Wylly came back and spat in Hazzard’s face, at which point Hazzard drew a pistol and shot Wylly pointblank through the heart. Wylly died instantly. The incident certainly put the county into a flurry. Hazzard was arrested on the spot, and an investigation ensued. Other landowners on the island, including John Couper and James Gould, wrote a joint letter to the newspaper lamenting that their peers would allow themselves to display such violent passions, and that Wylly
was lost to them at just 32 years old. Even Fanny Kemble, who coincidentally was visiting at the time, wrote in her journal of her sorrow for Wylly’s elderly mother. The Brunswick Advocate noted that Hazzard was indicted for voluntary manslaughter, but later records show he was eventually acquitted. The legend of the Pink Chapel holds that the Hazzard family, now scorned by their planter class after the shooting, no longer wished to attend services at Christ Church because of the hostile environment and thus built their own small house of worship. Local historians in the 20th century, however, disagreed over this undocumented account, leaving the chapel’s origin shrouded in mystery. This month’s image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s archives shows Pink Chapel as it appeared in 1956.
