Will You Change for the Better?

A

s locals, we all have walked the beach many times. I notice that it never looks the same. Sometimes the change is gradual like at Gould’s Inlet. And other times a winter Nor’easter will blow through and completely rearrange the landscape overnight. Each time I look out at the ocean I am reminded that there are forces beyond my control that shape the world I live in. Whether we like it or not, the wind, waves and tides create a different beach every day. Just like the beach is always changing, so is life. Certainly since I started EIL back in 2002, we have experienced a gradual change in the way we work, shop for retail, buy online, travel, date, watch TV and movies, and many other things. These are the expected slow currents of change.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

But this spring we were hit with a “hurricane” in the form of a virus and our lives have changed dramatically. Through all of the uncertainty, we have started to hear phrases like “new normal” and “return to normal” to describe what life will be like when we are

no longer in lockdown mode and are able to go back to our offices, restaurants, stores, etc. But if you really think about it, we don’t ever “return to normal” because whether the change is gradual or sudden, the world we experience is continually shifting and reshaping itself. So, with that in mind, consider this: Change is normal. While it’s reasonable to question and wonder how the world will change, the more important question to ask is, “How will I improve and grow from the change?” After all, it doesn’t really matter how the world changes if you don’t adapt to thrive in it. Change is inevitable but whether you evolve is a choice. Don’t return to “normal,” but instead return as someone who is changed for the better and is ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.

IT’S MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY!

¿Or is it? Although that’s a commonly held belief, it’s not an accurate one. Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is actually a holiday that celebrates the date of a single battle in the Franco-Mexican War. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army secured a victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. It was a battle that lasted from daybreak to early evening. The French had lost nearly 500 soldiers by the time they retreated and the Mexicans suffered fewer than 100 casualties. Although this clash was not a major strategic win in the overall war against the French, General Ignacio Zaragoza’s success on May 5 with his vastly outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexican troops represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and bolstered the resistance movement. In 1867, with some military support and political pressure from the United States, France finally withdrew. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday. But you know how we Americans get with holidays that show our international heritage – just think St. Patrick’s Day! In the U.S., the holiday has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. For some, it’s just another excuse to drink margaritas. As if we need an excuse!

The Mysterious Origins of the Margarita

J

ust like Cinco de Mayo, our favorite well-known tequila and lime concoction isn’t really that big of a deal in Mexico. While it was Tijuana restaurant owner Carlos “Danny” Herrera whose obituary named him the inventor of the

popular cocktail that debuted at Rancho La Gloria in 1938, others have also claimed ownership. According to Herrera’s version of the cocktail’s origins, he was inspired by a picky restaurant goer named Marjorie King. He “reinvented” the standard tequila-salt-lime shot combination as a cocktail for her when she advised she was allergic to all spirits except tequila, but didn’t like to drink it straight. The margarita has also been credited to another Danny. Legend has it that Danny Negrete created the cocktail as a wedding gift for his sister-in-law, named Margarita, of course, and bestowed it upon her at the Garci Crespo Hotel. Rita Hayworth interestingly has a footnote in this version of the story, because Negrete worked at Agua Caliente Race Track, where budding starlet Margarita Cansino (Hayworth’s real name) often performed. Don Carlos Orozco insisted that he was the one who gave birth to the drink while tending bar in Ensenada, Mexico in 1941. It was named after Margarita Henkel, the daughter of a German ambassador, who first tasted his experimental cocktail. No matter what or where the true origin, the margarita’s popularity endures today and it remains a centerpiece of many Cinco de Mayo fiestas.

Memorial Day

T

he holiday weekend when Memorial Day is celebrated has always served

as our official gateway to summer on St. Simons Island. It’s a time when we honor our heroes and also celebrate the freedoms that their sacrifices have afforded us. We may not be able to gather in the normal ways we’re used to, but we can still observe our holiday traditions.

The Power of 24 Notes

O

f course, Taps at Twilight always concludes with the playing of “Taps.” According to Jari Villanueva, a “Taps” historian and a retired trumpeter for the United States

Air Force Band, the “Taps” bugle call as we know it today was inspired by an earlier call used prior to the Civil War. That call, “Extinguish Lights,” came from the French as early as the 1800s, and was used as the signal for soldiers to turn out the lights and retire for the night. In 1862, General Daniel Butterfield called upon his brigade bugler, Oliver Wilcox Norton, to revise the bugle call into something less formal. The 24 notes that make up “Taps” were the result. Villanueva recounts that the call extended from regular use as a daily “lights out” signal to a military funeral tradition when, shortly after the song was revised, a captain named John Tidball decided to use it instead of firing the customary three volleys over the grave during a funeral in one of the artillery companies. He was worried that firing the volleys might be a signal to the enemy that fighting would resume. Following the Civil War, the playing of “Taps” and the three volley salute became the standard for military funerals. Accordingly, it has become a custom to recognize fallen soldiers on Memorial Day and Veterans Day with those poignant 24 notes.

are always a big hit. You can keep

it simple and just make traditional hamburger/ cheeseburger sliders or you can add other choices by grabbing some pulled pork and smoked turkey from Southern Soul Barbeque. Serve ’em up with lots of little rolls, including those yummy Sweet Hawaiian rolls that are always popular. Condiments should include ketchup, mustards, mayonnaise, barbeque sauces, relishes and chow chow, cole slaw, onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles, banana peppers. And don’t forget bacon and cheeses!

all make this a fun and easy party theme. Watch That Thing You Do to get a feel for the styles of the era. Full or pencil skirts and big hair for the ladies with glamour girl makeup. Sideburns or mop tops (this is also when the British Invasion began!) and skinny pants for the gents. Hawaiian shirts and board shorts are too casual, but be creative and dress that style up.

hile rock of all genres was popular in the 70s, there’s no question that disco took the world by storm, for better

or worse. It’s a fun theme to bring to life, however. Disco balls, colored lights, colored floor tiles. Black and white linens. No holds barred glamour! The more it sparkles the better! If you need fashion inspiration, just watch Saturday Night Fever to get some pointers. And don’t forget to steal a few dance moves from John Travolta.

T

he 90s were another decade that was wildly diverse in themes from pop to punk and goth to grunge. Boys bands and the Seattle sound competed for radio time.

Plaid shirts and ripped jeans with long shaggy hair ruled the day. But actual prom themes were big, extravagant escapes like Moulin Rouge and Monte Carlo. You can do things Romy & Michelle style or Turn Back Time with Cher. In contrast to the day to day grunge and punk styles, formal party looks were chic. Updos and tuxes aren’t out of place here.

he beginning of a new millennium was marked by time. Clocks striking midnight figure heavily in the theme here. The move from Prince’s “1999” to R.E.M. “The End of the World as We Know It” is a perfect musical transition to represent the decades we were leaving behind for the dawn of Y2K, when we were

warned everything might crash. But what do you bring to life from the decade of flip phones, Crocs, Blockbuster Video, Juicy sweats, P. Diddy, Pimp My Ride, Punk’d and

a time when hip hop infiltrated every aspect of pop culture? Capture the memories with a photo booth. Props galore should include plenty of bling, sports jerseys, furs, and hats.

when we return

I

n these past couple uncertain, and sometimes uneasy, months, we’ve learned some things. We realized that it’s difficult to stay at home and we enjoy the energy of the events that keep us busy. We discovered anew how caring and compassionate our neighbors can be. We have

keenly felt the physical absence of our friends and family during this period of social distancing. What we know is that our community is resilient and continues to adapt to these changing times. Chris Moncus Photography both demonstrates this and captures the spirit in the innovative quarantine “porchrait” sessions he’s been shooting.

As more doors start opening to the public again, and when you are comfortable, we’ll need to work together to make our island home the most wonderful place for residents and tourists alike once again. With an eye toward the future, we’ve come up with some ideas of how to celebrate those days when we return to some sense of normalcy.

Plan a progressive dinner with friends, but instead of going from house to house for each course, hit some local restaurants. Start the night out at Georgia Sea Grill’s wine bar for their fabulous drinks and light bites. They have terrific specials and the crab-stuffed hushpuppies are always on the menu. Head to Delaney’s Bistro & Bar for your main course. Their steak Diane and rack of lamb are hard to beat! For dessert, head back to the village for a dish of the notorious “chocolate stuff” or a key lime tart at Barbara Jeans. Yum! End the evening with a stroll down to the pier to walk off some calories and say goodnight to the moon shining on the ocean.

Welcome a newcomer. This can be someone who just moved in down the block, became a member at your church, or you met through an online yoga class. Show some old school Southern hospitality and bake them a pie or cake. Or, if you’re not the baking type, pick up a basket of Georgia gourmet goodies from Golden Isles Olive Oil. Add a welcome note with your phone number. You never know, they could turn out to be your new best friend.

Treat your parent friends to a “night off.” Offer a night of babysitting services to friends with children, so they can have a date night out with a little time alone. Whether they want to act like kids by playing miniature golf, then grabbing a burger and shake at Zuzu’s, or enjoy a movie followed by a romantic dinner in the warm ambiance at Sal’s Neighborhood Pizzeria, they’ll appreciate getting a night to themselves.

Support our local retailers by starting your Christmas shopping early. Once a week (or more, if possible), buy a gift for someone on your list from a shop around town, rather than on Amazon or at a big box store. Cloister Collection and Allie Harper always have stylish finds. For more than just fashion, Ronne’s on Market Street has a little bit of everything and some great gift ideas. The Golden Isles bracelet by Evocateur at Joseph Jewelers would make any island girl’s eyes light up. For the gents, a vintage style T-shirt or hat and complete set of spices or sauces from Southern Soul Barbeque is a sure winner. The options are endless!

Contact one of our local libraries or elementary schools to find out if there are opportunities to read to children. Story time is a fantastic way to bring some joy to the children of our community and to let their enthusiasm and wide-eyed wonder rub off on you too. EIL staffer Molly Duckworth has been reading to students at Goodyear Elementary for several years. She says of the experience, “What began as simply volunteering has turned into a fun and fulfilling time for both the students and me. It’s a true blessing that I look forward to each week during the school year!”

Make time for live music. Oh, how we’ve been missing concerts! By attending the Little Light Music performances presented by the Coastal Georgia Historic Society on the lighthouse lawn and the Sounds by the Sea series at Neptune Park presented by Golden Isles Arts & Humanities, you support those important community organizations too. Grab a bottle of your favorite wine and pick up some sushi at Fancy Q or some Nashville hot chicken from Porch to enjoy a picnic supper while you catch up with friends and neighbors on these select Sunday evenings in the summer.

Go island hopping! SSI residents and mainlanders should head over to Jekyll Island for the day. For close encounters with our native wildlife, visit Tidelands Nature Center and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Stop for lunch at The Wharf. We recommend pairing an order of the peel & eat Georgia shrimp with the fried green tomatoes for a delicious Southern lunch in a beautiful setting. Afterwards, wander the Historic District and pop in the Jekyll Island Commissary to pick up some treats like peach butter, Vidalia onion salsa, or some fresh ground Southern Pecan coffee.

Throw a block party in your neighborhood. We’ve been longing for the days when we can all get together and safely enjoy each other’s company again! Make it a potluck where everyone brings two dishes: a favorite take-out item and a homemade dish. An Italian Queen specialty pizza from Hildy’s or a chocolate cream pie from Café Frederica would have everyone clamoring for a slice.

Take a cooking class or workshop with a friend. Simmer & Soak offers periodic cooking classes with local chefs preparing multiple dishes and providing liberal tastings in their kitchen. We’ve heard nothing but rave reviews! Golden Isles Olive Oil generally has a full calendar of evening and weekend workshops with local and regional culinary experts. Past classes have included preparing cheese boards, making chocolate, and healthy menus. Visit their websites or call for more information about their class and event schedules.

Pamper your body and satisfy your soul by scheduling a Spa Day with your girlfriends. Carmen and her staff at Island Day Spa offer head to toe services from manipedis to massage. You can find a full menu on their website and book online too. No matter what treatments you choose, you’ll leave there feeling like a million bucks!

What a spa day is to women, a day of fishing is to men. Gather the guys and book a charter with one of our many local guides. Whether you want inshore or offshore, tarpon or trout, there’s a captain here who can put you on it. And if you need the day’s haul cooked, bring your catch on over to Catch! Call ahead of time to make arrangements and Catch 228 will prep and cook your fish, then serve it to you for dinner. There’s nothing better! Head to Historic Downtown Brunswick for First Friday. We’re eager to experience the fun that happens around Newcastle and Gloucester on the first Friday of each month. Go early to visit the Mildred Wilcox Gallery at The Ritz, SoGlo Gallery and the Brunswick Stewdio to check out any new exhibits. Drop in and see our friends at Cunningham Jewelers and Main Street Frame Shop, among the other retail stores open late for shopping. Grab dinner at Indigo Coastal Shanty, where EIL staff favorites include the Bahamian Chicken Curry, the Jerked Tostadas, and any of the desserts! If you want live music, catch Annie Akins doing her thing at The BoomBoom Room, or head over to Tipsy McSway’s where bands play outside in the adjacent square if the weather permits. Dedicate a day to island history. Explore Fort Frederica. Do a little learning in the Historic Harrington School. Visit the St. Simons Lighthouse and World War II Home Front Museums. Book a sail on the Tall Ship Lynx, while she’s still in the Golden Isles, to learn more about how privateers fared back in the 1800s. The story of this beautiful schooner and her historical namesake is an interesting one.

Harness some horsepower. Schedule a family outing with The Stables at Frederica. Saddle up and enjoy a trail or beach ride with their friendly and experienced guides. For a different kind of equine encounter, visit The Farm at Oatland North on a Sunday afternoon during their Open House hours. You can meet Cheyenne, Brugge, and their friends, as well as goats, cows, cats, a pig, and more at this animal rescue and sanctuary on the north end of the island.

Kayak the marshes. Get a different view of our island home and maybe get up close and personal with some native wildlife on a guided kayak tour with Southeast Adventure Outfitters. With 25+ years in the business, SEA knows their stuff. They’ve got terrific guides and offer tours that vary in size, duration, and route. Choose the one that best suits the kind of day you want to spend paddling. Take advantage of a privilege that maybe we took for granted until recently: the ability to just sit and relax on the beach. Invite your family and friends for a beach day and call The Tent Guys to arrange set up. With a family beach package, they’ll hook you up with a canopy, beach chairs, towels, a cooler with drinks, sand toys, and a cornhole set. All you need to do is bring the sunscreen, music, and snacks! If you need a good beach read, pop by Righton Books to pick up a book or three. Play with the dolphins. Okay, maybe you won’t really be playing with them. But you can watch them fish and frolic alongside the boat with a dolphin tour. Jekyll Island Boat Tours offers daily dolphin tours, including an evening tour where you get the added bonus of watching the sun set. What better way to wind down a day?!

We sin cerely hope

that the community

gets back on its feet as

quickly and safely as possible, because we can’t wait to see you all out and about again.

CCGF RECEIVES GRANTS Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation (CCGF) recently received a $100,000 grant from The Anschutz Foundation dedicated to assisting coastal area residents who have suffered temporary or permanent job losses due to the economic impact of COVID-19. The grant will be added to the Community Emergency Needs Fund established and managed jointly by the United Way of Coastal Georgia and the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation. Scott Steilen, President and CEO of Sea Island, approached The Anschutz Foundation to support this effort. Steilen also issued a challenge to the community to match or exceed these donated funds. Davis and Robin Love quickly accepted this challenge by pledging $50,000. Paul White, CCGF President and CEO, extends his thanks to both The Anschutz Foundation and the Loves and encourages the community to accept this challenge to help those directly affected by the loss of their jobs. SAVE THE DATE In our April issue, we told you all about Frederica Academy’s 19th Annual Derby Day signature fundraiser. This worldwide “pause” that cancelled school for the remainder of the year and caused the Kentucky Derby to be postponed dashed plans to have that event in May as scheduled. But hold on to your julep cups, it will still happen. The running of the 146th Kentucky Derby has been rescheduled for September 5 at Churchill Downs. Accordingly, Frederica Academy’s event is planned to take place on that date at Sea Island’s Retreat Clubhouse as well. We’ll have more information for you closer to race day, but right now, it’s safe to say it will be the same great party and just the date has changed. More information will be provided by the school on the Derby Day page found in the “Support FA” section of their website at fredericaacademy.org.

TORRAS FOUNDATION HELPS FEED FAMILIES The Torras Foundation recently donated a total of $15,000 to Manna House and Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia to help food insecure families in our community. The family foundation was established by respected local businessman, the late Robert M. Torras, Sr., and funded by the profitability of various companies owned by his family. These companies include Brunswick Landing Marina, Torras Properties, West Point Plantation, Atlantic Southeast Properties, Torras Realty, Torco, Kennesaw Mountain Business Park, and the Kut Kwick Corporation. The Torras family has been a part of the Golden Isles for six generations and has greatly benefited from the unparalleled resources this community has to offer. In appreciation for the support shown for their business endeavors, the Torras Foundation was created to return that same kindness. The donation enabled 1,000 families in Brunswick and 558 households in Darien to be served over the past two weeks.

History’s Helping Hands

T

he current global pandemic causes us to reflect on crises the United States has faced in the past. The massive social and economic upheavals of World War II immediately come to mind. While today’s crisis calls for isolation and physical separation to overcome the threat, the war years of the 1940s were a time when Americans worked side by side as never before to fight a common foe. As young men went off to battlefields overseas and businesses transitioned to producing war materiel, Americans on the Home Front looked for opportunities to support the war effort. Volunteering became an important way to make a difference, even for children. Almost 20 million children volunteered with the American Red Cross during the war, comprising about 75% of schoolaged children. One of those young volunteers was June Pilcher. June was in third grade when her family moved to Brunswick from Ellaville, near Americus, Georgia, in 1943. Her father had found work as a carpenter at the J.A. Jones Shipyard, where Liberty Ships were being built. One of the ways June supported the war effort was through bandage rolling. As a Red Cross volunteer, she learned to fold, roll, and securely tie bandages in a sterile environment to be sent overseas to dress battle

wounds. The Red Cross rolled over 2.5 billion surgical dressings during World War II. Then, as now, health care workers and volunteers were essential to meeting the challenge of a global threat. This month’s photo from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s Liberty Harbor Collection shows

June standing with Mrs. Jack Chapman, another Red Cross volunteer and family friend. Both are wearing the regulation head covering, or coif, adopted by the Red Cross during World War I and required in surgical dressing workrooms. The snug fit of the coif kept hair from falling on the bandages as they were rolled.

June married Asa Richard Brown in 1955 and now lives on St. Simons Island. In 2007, she generously donated to the Society the toolbox her father, Elmo T. Pilcher, used at the Brunswick shipyard. Several of the tools are now displayed in the Liberty Ship Gallery at the World War II Home Front Museum on St. Simons Island.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission to tell Coastal Georgia’s inspiring stories. The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
