PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Out on a Limb
S
ince there were no cameras in George Washington’s day, a person’s image was either sculpted or painted. Portraits of our nation’s first president often showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back. This led to a commonly held, yet easily debunked, belief that the phrase “it’ll cost you an arm and a leg” came from artists charging a price for the painting not based on size or number of subjects, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Not true, but it makes for a good story. Today, artwork is being turned into nonfungible tokens or NFTs and purchased with cryptocurrency. In layman’s terms, an NFT is a kind of digital collectible item that is stamped with a unique bit of code. These collectibles can be bought and sold. Society is becoming more virtual, especially after this past year. NFTs are incredibly alluring. An artist by the name Beeple, sold a tokenized collection of his art at an online auction at Christie’s for more than $69 million! So when I read that a journalist wrote a column about NFTs and turned the column itself into an NFT and sold it for $560,000, I decided I wanted in on the action! The first step was to go online and type in “How To Create and Sell Your First NFT.”

So, I need to set up an Ethereum Wallet, purchase a small amount of Ethereum and connect my wallet to an NFT Marketplace. Sounds easy enough…
✔ Go to the app store. ✔ Search and download Coinomi. ✔ Open the app and write down your recovery sentence of 24 words. ✔ Set a strong password. ✔ Add ethereum to your wallet. ✔ Use your receiving address to receive ether.
Wait a minute! The process of “minting,” as it’s known in crypto-speak, and then selling an NFT can cost more than $1,000! That sounds like an arm and a leg to me!

ashion is a reflection of the times. Post-war decadence produced the sassy, flashy flapper dresses of the 1920s. Free love and the rejection of tradition in the 1970s gave us psychedelic colors and flowing fabrics. When
women flocked to the office in the 1980s, power suits and tailored styles helped them convey their professionalism. Now in 2021, the aesthetics we’re leaning into focus more on comfort, functionality, and fun. We see old trends being recycled in new ways and value expression of personal style over replicating cookie-cutter fashion plates. We’re throwing off constraints that were imposed in traditional workplace or other public settings and embracing clothes that make us feel free, both physically and spiritually. This is what it means to be wild and free.

ohemian style is closely related to hippie fashion. Natural fabrics, retro patterns, earthy neutrals and warm shades merge with 70s style accents and a flair for statement accessories. Although closely associated with the hippie counterculture fashions of the 1960s and
70s, bohemian fashion today is part of mainstream culture. The wide variety of boho clothing and accessories currently available make the style an actual phenomenon, one that follows the lines of effortless, relaxed fashion, with loose-fitted apparel, casual accessories, and an overall artistic, creative mishmash of elements. Bohemian fashion is laid back, unconventional and highly expressive, often considered romantic. Like hippies, bohemians are free-spirited wanderers who refuse to dress in order to conform. Like “la vie Bohème” in Paris of the 1800s, the hippies of Haight-Asbury in the mid-1960s generated a historically significant dress reform movement. It’s hard to imagine that the outrageous and anomalous style revolution that occurred could have been born anywhere other than California, or more specifically, San Francisco, following the British Invasion and the American’s eager embrace of fashion, arts, and culture from London. The hippies’ protest against capitalist society led them to eschew any traditional strictures or etiquettes about clothes. Clothes and colors gleefully clashed. Old recycled clothes were considered proudly worn pedigree and ecologically conscious. They embraced Native American and folk dress and lifestyle. Fashion moved away from mini-skirts with the adoption of long peasant skirts and unconstructed flowing silhouettes and tent ABOVE: Embrace your free spirit

f course, we can’t talk about retro hippie fashion without mentioning tie dye. The term “tie-dye,” which describes the process of folding, twisting, or crumpling a textile before tying it with string or rubber bands and then applying dyes,
entered the mainstream American lexicon in the 1960s. While the dying process had been used for decades prior to this, there was a surge in its popularity during the hippie era because it was a simple and inexpensive method of creative self-expression. In 1964, Don Price, a marketer at Rit, saw an opportunity to introduce the dye brand to some creative types he’d discovered in Greenwich Village. Rit followed Price’s advice to replace its boxed powders with squeezable liquid dyes, better for creating multicolor designs. But Price’s real marketing genius paid off when he learned about Woodstock and

Romance Returns R
omance and nostalgia are major
themes this season. When times seem gloomy and uncertain, we tend to
look for happiness in old familiar places or indulge in a little romantic escapism. You can see this reflected in the runaway popularity of Bridgerton, current reboots of popular TV sitcoms we grew up with, and virtual reunion specials for some of our favorite movies. How does it translate to fashion? When it comes to style, romance and femininity go hand in hand, with soft colors or whimsical prints, girlish ruffles, flowing fabrics, ample volume, and flowery motifs in dreamy dresses, skirts, and tops. Instead of layers and layers of ruffles, however, this season’s look is more

Embrace Your Animal Spirit L
ike a leopard never changes its spots, animal print is another fashion trend that never truly goes out of style. With such an array of patterns and ways to wear it, how could it? It’s a perfect
way to glam up jeans or add interest to monochromatic ensembles with patterned shoes and accessories. We’ve definitely seen the trend explode over the past few years, with leopard spots adorning jackets, shoes, belts, t-shirts and home décor pieces too. 2020 and 2021 runway shows (even when virtual) have demonstrated that wildlife-inspired patterns are still here in full force. Beyond the classic leopard spots, zebra patterns, sleek tiger stripes, snakeskin prints, and even tropical bird plumage have been appearing from designers. And they’re coming at us in every color from monochromatic to metallic. While zebra stripes took top billing in 2019, and last year the bizarre popularity of Tiger King inspired everyone to unleash their ferocious feline side with tiger stripes and cheetah and leopard spots, Forbes says that in 2021 the hottest animal print trend is the western-inspired cow print. Generally natural in color, with brown or black spots, it’s a perfect print to pair with anything from subdued neutrals to bright neons and it’s showing up on everything from jeans to jackets, and hoop earrings to handbags. We’re also seeing more snakeskin prints, frequently merged with other animal patterns for a truly wild statement.

broken circles of black around a gold center. Cheetahs have spots without rosettes. Ocelots have elongated rosettes. Jaguars have spots in the middle of their rosettes.
2
While humans wear leopard spots to stand out, they are camouflage for the leopard. The spots are an evolutionary adaptation that help leopards blend in to their natural environments when they hunt.
3
Animal print popularity has regal roots. Zulu chieftains often wear leopard capes and crowns. Henry VIII forbade commoners from wearing leopard.
Animal print became all the rage in 18th century France after King Louis XIV imported animals from Africa for his menagerie and decorated Versailles with exotic skins. After Marie Antoinette, the infamous bride of King Louis XVI, disguised herself in an attempt to escape revolutionaries, she was depicted in a caricature as a leopard – one who couldn’t change her spots. Not long after, some of Napoleon’s officers used leopard skin to decorate their helmets and saddles.
4
With his debut collection in 1947, Christian Dior made leopard print a sensation in haute couture when he presented a leopard
sheath dress. The inspiration came from his muse, Mitza Bricard, who was known for wearing a leopard-print scarf as a wrist-tie. He introduced the print saying, “If you are fair and sweet, don’t wear it.”
5
Leopard print appeared on lingerie in the 1950s, when the Vanity Fair brand launched the style in a tantalizing marketing campaign that lasted more than
two decades. It was a staple in the sexy catalogs put out by Frederick’s of Hollywood. The print hit the swimsuit scene around the same time, and it’s popularity surged through the 1960s, especially after the introduction of the bikini. LEOPARD PRINT BIKINIS
were all the rage in the 50s, and they’re hot now too. Cloister Collection has sexy animal print suits by Vitamin A similar to the style shown here.

FUN FACT ABOUT BUBBLE GUM: It was sheer chance that made it pink. In 1928, Walter Diemer, an employee of the Fleer Chewing Gum Company first developed an acceptable bubble gum while experimenting with new gum recipes. One recipe he tried turned out less sticky than regular chewing gum and stretched more easily, making it perfect for blowing bubbles. As the gum was a grey color, he added dye to it to make it more appealing. Why pink? Simply because it was the color Fleer had the most of at the time. Diemer’s gum became highly successful and was marketed as “Dubble Bubble” because of its stretchy texture. It was the dominant brand of bubble gum until Bazooka entered the market following WWII.

Ancient Textile, Modern Trend
H
ooray for linen! Once considered such a luxury that it was used by Egyptians as currency, this lightweight, cool sustainable fabric has been identified as a key fashion trend for 2021. With ethical fashion designers
and more traditional designer names on the catwalk embracing its versatility and durability, linen is finally getting a modern moment in the sun. Including being used at fashion houses like Fendi and Dior, according to Alexandra Van Houtte, founder of fashion search engine Tagwalk, linen is seeing a 102% increase in use in 2021 Spring and Summer collections. Industry insiders report that more and more labels are loving linen and using it more. According to Van Houtte, 64% of brands, including Dior,
Fendi, and Louis Vuitton, used linen extensively for the first time. More than a quarter of those were luxury brands, including the aforementioned, plus others like Stella McCartney and Maison Margiela. Among the major fashion houses (Prada, Acne, Miu Miu), 16.1% of their collections contain linen. Approximately half of all designers showcased at least one linen look in their collection. All in all, reports indicate that linen is experiencing an enormous growth in popularity, both with luxury brands and other fashion houses. The versatility of linen is also being demonstrated. No longer limited to the romantic and bohemian styles described earlier, this season’s linen plays on current trends such as minimalist, outspoken color, workwear, and androgynous styles. It was combined with satin, wool, and mohair by designers like John Galliano of Maison Margiela. Van Houtte says of the variety of designs, “Although linen has a strong presence of Bohemian/Nomadic and extremely feminine romantic looks (stitching, lace and linen, long dresses by Alberta Ferretti and Dior, delicate embroidery, feminine midi dresses and wide pants by Fendi), tailoring also has its big day coupled with the success story of the season: oversized pants often worn with a blazer for a complete look.”
Utilizing accessories like interesting or unexpected jewelry, detailed belts, and printed scarves is a perfect way to add depth to a simple linen ensemble. Necklaces and other pieces of jewelry by Fiddlesticks feature rolled fabric “jewels” and can be found locally at Indigo & Cotton.

T A S S E L High school graduation is a special ceremony, carrying great significance to each graduate and immense pride to those who supported them. It’s the closing of a chapter and the beginning of a fresh page. It denotes great accomplishment and hope for a long journey of successes ahead.
For most, commencement means entering the work-force, college, technical school or the military. For the students of Communities in Schools (CIS) of Glynn, it may mean even more. These kids have made it to the stage to receive their diploma while hurdling adult-size problems and challenges that many other students may not have faced. Turning their tassels signifies a mighty achievement. For the staff, board of directors and supporters of CIS of Glynn, it marks another successful school year of changing lives.

CIS of Glynn works tirelessly to prevent students from dropping out of school by surrounding them with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Following this mission, CIS focuses on increasing the graduation rate by providing services and support to enable students to overcome
FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR, 100% OF STUDENTS AT BRUNSWICK HIGH SCHOOL AND GLYNN ACADEMY WHO RECEIVED CIS SERVICES GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL. those life challenges they face. CIS currently serves eight schools in Glynn County: Brunswick High School, Glynn Academy, Glynn Middle School, Needwood Middle School, Altama Elementary School, Burroughs-Molette Elementary School, Goodyear Elementary School, and Glynn Learning Center. McIntosh County Academy joined CIS of Glynn for the 2020-2021 school year thanks to the generous funding support from The Sapelo Foundation and diligent work by former active CIS program member and McIntosh County superintendent Dr. Jim Pulos. At each of the schools, CIS hires a site coordinator who works with school administrators to determine which students are in need of intervention. They meet with these students, their teachers, the CIS staff, and in some cases their parents and/or social workers to devise a plan and address the issues to improve academics and behavior. “A lot of our work is behind the scenes,” says Tonya Barbee, Clinical Program Manager for CIS. Tonya uses a specific training method with site coordinators and CIS staff, applying research-based language on a developmental framework of five levels. The first – just listen and be warm. The support needed varies for each student, as all have individualized needs. From providing eyeglasses to a child struggling to make out words or numbers to finding the right tutor for after-school help or more intensive approaches to provide therapy for a child in need, CIS gathers the resources required to find solutions. By working alongside the Glynn County School System, CIS of Glynn case manages those
students most at-risk of dropping out of school by tracking academic, behavior and attendance data and providing the support they need to stay focused on the goal of graduation and success in life. They believe that every child needs and deserves the “Five Basic Needs”: a one-onone relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and a healthy future, a marketable skill to use upon graduation, and a chance to give back to peers and the community. While successful promotion to the next grade level is the goal for all students, high school caseloads remain the largest among all levels of CIS’ nine schools. CIS served more than 531 students in the Glynn County School System during the 2019-2020 school year. For the third consecutive year, 100% of students at Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy who received CIS services graduated from high school. Promotion rates from last school year reached 97.7% among all levels. When CIS of Glynn was formed in the mid2000s, Glynn County’s overall graduation rate was just above 50%. CIS has become an integral partner in helping to increase graduation rates by more than 40% over the past 15 years by providing a community-wide focus on a systemic problem. The organization is proud to have grown from two high schools to nine schools of all levels, but they won’t be stopping there. CIS of Glynn is dynamic in its approach to problem solving, providing distinct support to each student throughout their school career as well as changing needs and resources during
the school year. 2020 was a year marked with new challenges for all, and certainly for those in education. Glynn County Schools have seen school closings through hurricanes and severe weather advisories for unknown amounts of time in the past, but nothing like the impact of the global pandemic starting in March of last year. CIS of Glynn’s team sprang to action to overcome students’ academic obstacles faced by transitioning to virtual learning, to provide basic needs students normally would receive attending school, and went beyond the call of duty to be sure these kids had what they needed to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS of Glynn is indescribably proud of the 47 students at Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy that received their diplomas after the 2019-2020 school year, socially distanced in masks at the Glynn County stadium with plans to continue their education with a bachelor’s (37 graduates) or associate degree (3 students), attend a technical school (5 students), or

join the military (2 students). CIS also congratulates the 175 elementary school students, 158 middle school students and 139 undergraduate high school students in the program that were promoted to the next grade level after the 2019-2020 school year. 2021 has brought great promise for three CIS graduates that signed letters of intent to receive college football scholarships, as well as four seniors that graduated early in January. Brunswick High School, Glynn Academy and McIntosh County Academy seniors in the CIS program will finish well in 2021. Despite the shift to virtual learning, distress generated from increasing needs, uncertainties of the days to come in education and in life, and all the emotions and personal strife that ambiguity caused these developing children, the CIS of Glynn seniors and underclassmen have worked with profound diligence to overcome their circumstances. CIS of Glynn’s staff and Board of Directors are immensely proud of these students and thankful to the Glynn and McIntosh County School Systems, business community, foundations, government entities, and individual partners that dedicate their time, talents and resources to the CIS mission.

House Guest Etiquette
W
ith summer on the horizon, it’s great time to talk about etiquette while being a house guest. Growing up in the same small town as past generations of my family, we rarely traveled to stay overnight with family or close friends. I didn’t really experience being a “guest” until I was in college. I remember calling my mom to tell her that I was going home for a weekend with a girl I had met in the dorm. I’m sure my mom ended our conversation saying, “Be kind and help out.” Twenty-five years later that advice still applies. Whether visiting a cousin for a beach weekend, overnighting at your inlaws, or caravanning to a college friend’s home, there are a few rules of courtesy to follow.

Always let your host know the dates of your visit. Three days is a good limit. Be sure to let your host know what time you will arrive and depart.

Bring a Gift
When at a guest home, treat your cell phone like you’re at the dinner table – don’t use it. Check emails and texts in the privacy of your room. If you’re expecting an important phone call, let your host know in advance that you might need to step away to take it. Time with your host should be your main priority.

Say “thank you” when you arrange the visit, upon your arrival and your departure, and always follow up with a handwritten note. The words “please and “yes, please” are music to every ear. Use them often.
Help Out
Make your bed, keep your bathroom clean, and always offer to help in the kitchen. Ask where your host would like dirty sheets and towels placed when you are leaving. If you brought children with you, get them out of the house for an hour or two, especially if your host is an empty nester.
Enjoy Your Travels
Most of us missed travel time with family and friends the past year. So this year it will be so much sweeter.

The Elegant Live Oaks by John Adams
O
ne of the challenges that all island homeowners must face is obtaining insurance on their real property. Many major insurors openly discriminate against island property, leaving little choice to the resident. I recently got a notice that my insurance would be cancelled in 30 days unless I had a tree that they claimed was a threat to the house removed from my backyard. When I complained to the local agent, he replied, “Yeah, that happens a lot.” I called the insurance company and got the same runaround. The tree in question, estimated at over a hundred years old, is simply majestic. So I reached out to a local arborist who said, “I would never cut that tree down; it just needs a haircut!” He went on to explain that live oaks do best when they have dense clusters of branches trimmed so that hurricane force winds can pass through, and that this trimming would not harm the tree in any way. A thousand dollars later, I was able to maintain my insurance coverage. To witness the elegance of Quercus virginiana, also known as the Southern live oak, you may wish to 1) overlook the construction of the roundabout at Frederica Road and King’s Way and 2) drive slowly south on Retreat Ave.
toward The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club and be inspired by Avenue of the Oaks. This remarkable double row of trees was planted in 1826 by Anna Page King as the entrance to Retreat Plantation, which she had inherited, making these stately trees nearly 200 years old. And if that doesn’t impress, head over the causeway to Brunswick, and cast your eyes on the visual delight known as Lovers Oak. At the intersection of Albany and Prince Streets, Lovers Oak is estimated to be more than 900 years old. The tree’s trunk is approximately 13 feet in diameter, branching into ten main limbs with a diameter of 1-3 feet each. For a little perspective, this tree was flourishing when King Richard the Lionhearted died in Europe. Wood from the live oak is hard, heavy, and difficult to work with, but very strong. In the days of wooden ships, they were the preferred source for the framework timbers. The natural trunk and branch angles were used for their strength. The frame of the USS Constitution was constructed from Southern live oak harvested here on Gascoigne Bluff. The density of the wood
grain allowed it to survive cannon fire, thus earning her the nickname “Old Ironsides.” My advice is to slow down, look up, and revel in the majestic beauty of our remarkable live oaks. They’re one more reason why we love St. Simons Island so much.

FOUNDATION FOCUS
A Healthy Partnership In this issue of Elegant Island Living, the Davis Love Foundation (DLF) continues its partner and charity spotlight with a look at its partnership with Southeast Georgia Health System and its Foundation. Last month, DLF began this series with a look at The RSM Classic Charity Putting Challenge.
E
ach May, the nation celebrates National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate time to spotlight the meaningful partnership between the Davis Love Foundation and Southeast Georgia Health System and its Foundation. It’s also the perfect opportunity to thank the men and women who are on the front lines of health care every day. The partnership between the two organizations began in 2010, the first year of The RSM Classic (then McGladrey Classic), when the Health System signed on as the tournament’s Official Medical Provider. The Health System operates medical stations and provides a Wellness on Wheels mobile vehicle at the tournament to serve players, volunteers, and spectators requiring medical assistance. In 2020, Southeast Georgia Health System provided invaluable expertise and guidance as they worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the PGA TOUR and tournament leadership to develop COVID-19 safety and testing protocols for players, caddies, staff, and Pro-Am participants. “We had an extremely efficient and effective operation due in large part to the expertise of the medical professionals at Southeast Georgia Health System,” said Tournament Director Todd Thompson.

Patton Kizzire
In addition, the Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation is one of the community non-profits that benefit from charitable dollars raised through the tournament. The goal of the Health System Foundation is to create awareness and support for the community. The impact of donations can be seen in all aspects of the Health System including its Brunswick Campus Master Renovation & Expansion Project.
In its first eleven years, The RSM Classic, hosted by Davis Love III, has raised more than $22.2 million to support local and national charities. The 2021 PGA TOUR event is November 15-21 at Sea Island Golf Club. For partnership information, regardless the size of your business, contact John McKenzie, Director of Sales, at jmckenzie@dlovefoundation.com or visit rsmclassic.com. 70

At
home with
Mary Hunt Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. What makes a house a home is the feeling you have walking in. For me it’s homey, relaxing, and easy. I love my neighborhood, Palm Lake Estates. I find it charming and convenient. I always tell my clients neighborhoods are what they live in, they can change a home to fit their needs. I couldn’t see my family in another neighborhood, but this one. Not just for the people, but also for its location. Our home fits our lifestyle being very casual and open. One of my favorite places to spend my time is in my bathroom. When my husband, Brendan and I built our home 17 years ago we installed a 1950’s claw foot tub in our master bath. After a long day I love to relax and soak in my tub with a glass wine under my candle lit chandelier. Often times my husband will sit next to me as we discuss our day. We have raised two children here and the memories we have created in our home are priceless. I love to decorate using art pieces created by my oldest child who is currently studying at SCAD. I am amazed at how my child has such an imagination and eye when it comes to creating. Another one of my favorite pieces of décor is a painting by Gustav Klimt, “The Kiss”. Many years ago prior to our engagement, Brendan and I saw this painting in an art gallery. We both fell in love with it, but didn’t buy it. The following Christmas he hinted he was giving me something “wrapped in gold” I just knew he was going to propose! But to my surprise it was the painting instead. A few months later he came to his senses and proposed. The painting now hangs above our bed. To me, the painting symbolizes our love and everything we have created together since.

Fueling the Light: The Oil House
W
hile the lighthouse tower is the shining star of what used to be the St. Simons Island Light Station, there is a small building on the property that, though easily missed, served an important purpose in safely keeping a light shining over St. Simons Sound. The Oil House, constructed of brick and measuring 10.5 feet by 12.5 feet, is painted white purposefully to blend in with the white lighthouse tower. In the late 19th century, petroleum-based kerosene became the standard fuel for the oil lamps that illuminated America’s lighthouses. The scientists of the U.S. Lighthouse Board were always searching for brighter, more efficient and economical lamp fuel. They began experimenting with petroleum products as early as 1855. Kerosene was first reported in use in 1877. Although kerosene was by far the most abundant and lowest cost option, its flammability greatly concerned the Lighthouse Board and its keepers. For this reason, it was at first only authorized for use in lighthouses with Third Order Fresnel lenses or smaller, of which the St. Simons Lighthouse is one. The massive First and Second Order lenses were considered too valuable to risk destruction. Since the fuel posed a severe fire hazard, the Lighthouse Board began suggesting the addition of well-ventilated, fire-proof oil houses to many
light stations. Previously, the fuel for lamps had been stored within the lighthouse towers or adjacent work rooms, such as the hallway that connected the St. Simons Keeper’s Dwelling to the tower. Dating from 1890, the St. Simons Oil House was among the first ones built. Not all stations were as fortunate, and it wasn’t until 1918 that almost all land-based stations had a separate oil house. Typically, within the oil houses there were wooden shelves that held hundreds of 5-gallon containers of kerosene. The light keeper was required to inspect the building daily for fuel leaks from storage cans. Additionally, the Lighthouse Board kept a close watch on how much kerosene a light station consumed to ensure that this valuable commodity was being used efficiently and only for approved purposes. The use of electricity within lighthouses eventually made oil houses obsolete. Often they were transformed into regular storage sheds. The St. Simons Oil House has served many purposes over the years, including a brief stint as a gift shop for the first Museum of Coastal History. Today, it stores hurricane supplies for the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum.
This month’s image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives is a postcard, circa 1920, showing the Oil House to the left of the Lighthouse. Also shown is the Oil House as it appears today.
