1% PARTNER

You Shop, We Save

The 1% for St. Simons program launched in October 2017 with the support of the media and a number of popular restaurants. It quickly grew to include lodging, recreational services, and real estate. A year later, the program continues to grow and has recently expanded into the retail market.

When you shop at Two Friends, Uncle Don’s Local Market, or Island Bridal Boutique, you now have the opportunity to donate 1% to preserving the island we all love. In partnership with the St. Simons Land Trust, proceeds from the program are used for land acquisition, land management, education and outreach, public access to waterways and wildlife preserve, and to the protection and preservation of historic properties forever.

Two Friends

Nestled under the moss-draped live oaks at Redfern Village, Two Friends is a shop that showcases an impeccable mix of clothing, shoes, jewelry, art, home accessories and gifts. Owner and curator, Marti Tolleson designed her boutique to capture the essence of this Southern resort destination as well as her style and philosophy on life.

Tolleson feels that “the decision for Two Friends to be a St. Simons Island 1% partner has the unique feature of being both good for business and simply something that makes us happy! The Land Trust and its efforts offer many ways for businesses and individuals to have a positive impact on our

quality of life. We consider it a privilege to take part in this worthwhile program and would encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to make a difference.”

Uncle Don’s Local Market

When you step foot into Uncle Don’s Local Market, you are welcomed warmly by owner Don Maxey. Here, as the name of the market implies, the theme is local! The produce and honey are locally sourced, as are many of the

furnishings and gift items in the charming antiques market.

“I joined the program to help the St. Simons Land Trust preserve the character and beauty of our island. I admire the work and efforts of the organization and we are excited to be a part of the program,” says Maxey.

He reflects on the first month of participating in the program, “We have had a very positive response. Many who have asked questions about it are very willing to participate. The contributions over the course of one month were significant, and with several businesses supporting this project, it is easy to see how valuable the program will be to help the St. Simons Land Trust reach its goals. We feel especially proud that our customers see the need to step up and actively contribute to the betterment of our community.”

Island Bridal Boutique

Island Bridal Boutique (IBB) is the first bridal salon on St. Simons Island and the only one in the Golden Isles. Owners Dana Carpenter and Tammy Hamby have been best friends for the past thirty-five years. When Dana’s daughter-in-law, Lexi Carpenter, began looking for her own dream dress for her special day, they realized that there was nowhere to shop locally for gowns. That’s how IBB came to be.

Not only does Island Bridal Boutique appeal to the brides of the coast, but also to bridesmaids, flower girls, and others in the bridal party. The store also carries lingerie, garters, bridal and everyday jewelry, as well as gifts for attendees and brides.

“When we learned of the Land Trust’s 1% program, it was a no-brainer. How perfect an opportunity to give back to the community as a business!” says manager Lexi Carpenter. Bridal consultant Jori Acosta is also enthusiastic about the program, saying, “I love that the business I work for has a chance to be a part of a great program to help preserve our treasured island. It lets me be involved as well and it’s exciting!”
