On Sunday, November 11, sixtyfive young musicians led by conductor Jorgé Peña will welcome you to an afternoon at the movies, but you won’t be at the theater. Experience the world of the silver screen through a recital of popular movie melodies in the opulent setting of the Mizner Ballroom at The Cloister on Sea Island. The concert will take place 5:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception beginning at 4:00 p.m. Pianist Christopher Smith will entertain guests at the reception.

In addition to its regular repertoire of classical pieces, GIYO members enjoy playing modern pieces that are familiar and loved by the audience. This fall recital will have the full orchestra playing themes from Oklahoma, James Bond, the Magnificent Seven, Showboat, the Way We Were and others. Long-time GIYO supporter and friend, Jim Bishop and A.W. “Bill” Jones III are the honorary chairs. The recital supports two important summer music experiences for local musicians, one for high school students that takes place at the College of Coastal Georgia and one for younger students that takes place at Frederica Academy. Last summer nearly 100 young people took part in a week-long CCGA Summer Music Camp at the College of Coastal Georgia and another 100 at the Federica camp. Taught by 20 professional musicians, students had intensive daily private lessons, ensemble coaching, section practice and full orchestra rehearsal. All proceeds from the November recital will be used strictly to fund next year’s summer music camps.

Students in the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra take music lessons, rehearse weekly in the orchestra and perform two public concerts per year, the first on December 18 and the second in May. A younger group of 31 students play in the Symphonette, a training group for the orchestra. An introductory program of violin entitled “String-On!” is being offered to all Glynn County 5th graders this year. Violin classes are offered in several area public schools as well and The Golden Isles Youth Orchestra Ensemble provides music at many community events.

It’s important to note that 33% of GIYO musicians come from low-income families and100% of participants graduate from high school and continue their education. This demonstrates the lasting legacy of community support.

Board members Barbara Sullivan and Jane Thau, along with a committee of volunteers, are chairing this event. Please contact Barbara at 912.434.9344 with any questions or for more information. Tickets are $125 per person. To purchase, send a check made out to the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra (GIYO) to PO Box 603, Brunswick, GA 31521.
