Five Life Lessons I Learned from My Dog

D

ogs know a thing or two about living life to the fullest. Whether they’re romping in the surf at the beach or rolling over for belly rubs, our canine companions tend to savor each moment life gives them. Here are five ways our pups live that we should follow. Love unconditionally. Dogs love without expecting anything in return, and we should all do more of that! Express gratitude. Being happy comes down to focusing on what you have, rather than what you don’t. Obviously, the last 8 months have been a challenge. Yet, every time you feed your dog, they react like it’s the first time they’ve ever seen food. Dogs remind us that even though something may be routine, we should always take time to appreciate things. Don’t judge. Dogs don’t judge people based on skin color, gender or anything else. What dogs rely on when separating the good humans from the bad ones are simply people’s personality traits and actions.

Be forgiving. Have you ever accidentally stepped on your dogs paw? You feel terrible, yet your canine companion seems to forget about it after just a few seconds. Dogs really are one of the most forgiving species out there. We humans could learn a thing or two from dogs about forgiveness and letting go of grudges.

Love thy neighbor. And thy neighbor’s neighbor. Dogs never meet a stranger. They are always open to meeting other dogs and people. Take your dog for a walk and you are guaranteed to meet a neighbor. Dogs are always there to remind us to focus on the “pawsitive.” Even if it’s something small that brings us joy. After all, things can’t be too bad when your pup rolls over and gives you a look full of love that says, “I’ll take a belly rub!”

Community A f l o at

Community is defined both as a group of people living in the same place and as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Unity is the state of being united or joined together as a whole. In this month’s issue we embrace the sweet spot where these concepts converge and celebrate #CommUNITY. Everyone who lives, works, and plays in the Golden Isles is a part of this larger community that’s at its strongest when we support and lift each other. These uncertain times amplify that need and have shown how valuable that support can be. Our local non-profits and charitable organizations are where many turn when they are struggling to keep their heads above water, and act as our buoys. In the same way, these organizations need our support through giving and volunteerism to keep them afloat and able to render aid. We’re sharing stories about local non-profits and the services they provide, as well as the ways you can assist them through volunteer opportunities and/or donations. You’ll also see individuals from several of these organizations modeling fashion from local retailers while enjoying an evening cruise we arranged with Legacy Charters aboard the Edmond Dantes. The Community Connections catalog provides contact information so you can connect with our local nonprofits whether to seek services they provide, participate in their programs or events, or to offer your time, talents, or treasure. By lifting each other, we keep our community afloat. 22

WE LIVE HERE WE GIVE HERE Photography by Tim Rude, Fierce Strategy + Creative

F

all is the time of year when many non-profits hold the annual fundraising events that are critical to their ongoing operations and services provided in the community. This year, many organizations are facing unprecedented challenges that will require taking a different approach. The “We Live Here, We Give Here” idea started with a phone call from Nancy Kaufman, Vice-Chairperson, Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity Glynn County to Virginia Schlegel, Executive Director of the Humane Society, Nancy and Virginia were determined to think outside the box this year in order to encourage continued support for local non-profits. As a result of that initial conversation, the American Cancer Society Victory Board, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia, Habitat for Humanity of Glynn, and the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia are coming together to support each other. These organizations have always benefited from the generosity of the community to continue their missions of helping people and animals. Although they are not able to host their traditional in-person fundraisers this year, they still depend on donations. 24

If in the past you have attended the Victory Gala, Merry Mixer, Hunt Ball, or Blue Jean Ball, these organizations are joining forces to encourage you to continue your support. Although the landscape of giving has changed, the needs have not. There are still people and their families struggling with cancer, children in need of mentoring to reach their full potential, people needing affordable housing, and homeless animals needing care. If you purchased a

ticket to any of these events in the past, this year perhaps you would consider making a monetary donation in the same amount. Here, each of the “We Live Here, We Give Here” charitable organizations share information about their mission and stories about the work they do. Together, they hope you will extend your generosity and open your hearts to those who still need your help.

HUMANE SOCIETY OF SOUTH COASTAL GEORGIA

T

he mission statement of the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia (HSSCG) reads as follows: “HSSCG is dedicated to promoting the compassionate treatment of animals in our community through adoption, public spay/ neuter services, sheltering and education.” That’s a great mission statement. But really, it is much more than that for the animals 26

and people at the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. For the people involved, it is a calling. For the volunteers and supporters, it is a passion. For the animals in their care, it is a guarantee. The Humane Society was founded in 1967 to help the homeless animal population. Since the beginning, the Humane Society has taken in and found homes for well

over 15,000 dogs and cats. Hundreds of animals were also reunited with their families. In 2011 with the help of their generous supporters, they built a bigger, better facility to house even more homeless animals. Sadly, all too often the dogs and cats arriving at the facility require special medical care, X-rays, surgery, heartworm treatment and sometimes have other issues. Many have not been socialized or have not received the love they so desperately need and deserve. It is so gratifying to see an animal respond to kindness and attention and even learn to play. Some have had to undergo complicated surgery or treatment and learn to function in a different way, sometimes with three legs or one eye. They are all loved and nurtured and sent to families who will appreciate them as they are. One success story is Hudson, a handsome black and white Spaniel mix. Hudson was in and out of shelters and homes at a very early age. It was a struggle to find him a home that was the right fit. Hudson was needy, with separation anxiety and an abundance of Spaniel energy. His foster reached out to HSSCG in the hopes that we might have the perfect family for him. Hudson is now thriving in a home with HSSCG Executive Director, Virginia Schlegel. Virginia is familiar with the needs of animals like Hudson who just need a nurturing environment. Many animals, both cats and dogs, arrive at the Humane Society needing that special touch. Some animals have medical or emotional needs or may be orphaned. This is where the Humane Society steps in with bottle feeding and fostering. Other animals transferred to HSSCG from open admission facilities where they have no future.

The simple truth is that all of these life changing stories are made possible by those who donate. HSSCG’s annual fundraiser, The Blue Jean Ball, benefits the animals in a tremendous way. Co-chairs Brenda Kilgore and Elizabeth Powell have been a huge part of this fundraising in the past years. However, this year has been a new challenge for this nonprofit. For the safety of both the supporters

and staff, the Humane Society has had to cancel this critical fundraiser. The ones who have the most to lose are the homeless cats and dogs who count on your support. This year you too have a challenge. Will you be there for the animals? They are still in need of your help. If you’d like to make a donation to support HSSCG, please do so via their website at HSSCG.org/blue-jean-ball.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GLYNN COUNTY

W

hen Brunswick native Rose Mary Flowers, a single mother of three boys, went to deposit her paycheck one January afternoon in 1994, she was intrigued by a sign in the lobby promoting affordable housing from Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County (HFHGC). Rose immediately headed upstairs to learn more. “We’d moved into a two-bedroom rental after living with my mom for a while, and to say it wasn’t well-maintained would be an understatement. My boys were 9, 7 and 5, and I had started

to think about getting my own place. I asked (executive director) Sherrye Gibbs how much the down payment was for a Habitat home. ‘Three hundred hours of sweat equity,’ she replied. ‘Well, sign me up,’ I said. Truthfully, I didn’t think I would qualify. When she called me to say my application had been accepted, I was thrilled.” It’s a day that Rose’s eldest son, Benjamin Sterling, Jr., also remembers well. He and his brothers, Jerrold Sterling and Craig West, had already moved three times, but this time was

special. “Mama had always done a great job of making wherever we were living feel like home, but from Day One, she started saying, for the first time ever, that this house was ours. That it would always be ours; we wouldn’t ever be moving again. Twenty-six years later, she’s still here. We all get together here with our own kids for holidays.” Rose recalls, “I climbed a ladder and helped shingle the roof and build the A/C support. The boys enjoyed the construction part significantly more than I did, but helping to build your forever home is an unforgettable experience.” Both mother and son extol the vital importance of having the foundation of an affordable, permanent family home. “Owning your own home gives you a peace of mind you can’t get anywhere else,” says Rose. “I paid off our twenty-year Habitat mortgage in seventeen years, working minimum-wage jobs and with arthritic knees. I’m mighty proud of that.” Becca Randall, HFHGC’s interim executive director, agrees. “The Flowers family reflects the multi-generational impact home ownership has in an economically-challenged community. We know that children from Habitat homes tend to do better academically, as well, and we are all tremendously proud of Rose and all of her sons.” Benjamin became the first in his military family to graduate from a four-year college.

While the academically gifted introvert aspired to attend UNC, he was told it was ‘an Ivy of the South’ and not to aim so high. “But once we were settled in our own house, Mom made sure we didn’t have to worry about anything at school but getting our lesson, and that stability gave us a confidence that I try to emulate with my children today. The more they said ‘You’ll never get in to Chapel Hill,’ the more that lit a fire in me to go nowhere else. I was accepted early decision.”

pensively, “Community isn’t just defined by who we look like or associate with. I tell folks to dig deeper to find our common bonds, because they’re there. I know they are, because I grew up in a house built by strangers. But once they got to the build, they didn’t remain strangers for very long; they became family, every time. Even though we never knew the name of every person who helped build this house that we still call home, they are family. We all are.” HFHGC is unable to hold their signature fundraiser, the Hunt Ball, but still needs your assistance to keep the dream of homeownership alive for others. If you’d like to make a donation to support HHGC, please do so at hfhglynn.charityproud.org/Donate or by calling Becca Randall at 912.265.7455.

After graduation, Benjamin pursued a career in retail and, in 2015, he married Tashina Baker, the daughter of Mark Baker, pastor of Brunswick’s Greater Works Ministries. Today, they live in Brunswick with daughter, Caden, 10, and 4-year-old twins Benjamin III and James. Now the director of retail operations for Coastal Georgia Historical Society, Benjamin is a rising figure in the local civic and charitable firmament. “I’m big on giving back,” he says. “I know my family had an opportunity not many of my neighborhood friends had growing up.” From the front porch of his mother’s Habitat home, Benjamin says

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTHEAST GEORGIA

F

or more than 50 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia has enabled young people most in need to achieve great futures as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Some of you may have attended a Club growing up or have a child or grandchild that attend today. Their mission is to enable all young people, especially those most in need, to reach their full potential as they become adults. They aim to assure success is within reach of every young person who enters their doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Georgia alumnus Rashaun Whipple was a member of the Club from kindergarten through high school. After graduation, Rashaun started working part-time for the Boys & Girls Club. Today, he holds a leadership role as a Director of a Club.

Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia has ten Clubs in Glynn County, serving over 5,000 young people through Club membership and community outreach. They provide a safe place, caring adult mentors, fun and friendship, and high-impact youth development programs on a daily basis during critical non-school hours. If school is out, they are most likely open. Through the after-school program and summer camps, Club programs promote academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

Along with the rest of the world, the Club has been closely monitoring the evolving situation with the coronavirus pandemic. It has brought uncertainty and disruption to our communities, but Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia’s top priority has not changed: the health and safety of the children they serve. From March through July of this year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia were able to provide more than 260,000 snacks and dinners to families in Glynn County.

The focus at the Teen Center is to help Club members get ready for what life looks like after graduation. For some, that may be college; for others, it may be direct entry straight into the workforce. Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast

With generous support from the community, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia are making a difference in the lives of their members and within Glynn County. They can’t do this without your commitment or investment in

their mission. Every time you give your time, talent, or treasure to the Clubs, you give one more child the chance to achieve their full potential. Because of your support, dreams come true! AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY VICTORY BOARD

F

ifteen-year throat cancer survivor Greg Gordon is very open about his cancer journey and always willing to help those with a recent diagnosis or going through treatment. But his cancer cause hit even closer to home with the recent passing of his sister from lung cancer. He understands the importance of hope when battling this disease. “I always tell people, don’t get depressed,” said Gordon. “It’s easy to lose your will but your mind is a powerful thing when it comes to beating cancer.”

32

E L E G A N T I S L A N D L I V I N G / #CommUNITY

The Brunswick resident underwent 35 radiation treatments and three chemotherapy treatments. His doctor recommended a feeding tube, but Greg thought he was a tough guy and didn’t need it. He regrets that decision and recommends it to other throat cancer patients. Even though he is 66, Greg doesn’t have plans to slow down and continues to work as a senior executive in the St. Simons Island office of McGinty-Gordon & Associates. Greg is just one example of the many local cancer patients the American Cancer Society

(ACS) Victory Board has been able to help over the past 50 years. The chapter has raised more than $2 million to fight cancer in Glynn County, and while COVID-19 has impacted some of the organization’s in person fundraising events, it hasn’t dampened the groups passion to continue to help cancer patients in their community. The ACS Victory Board was founded in 1969 when Mrs. James B. Gilbert, Sr. hosted a fashion show luncheon at the Sea Island Club Room with 200 ladies in attendance. Harriet’s

Fashion Show evolved into the Victory Gala. From this, the ACS Victory Board was created and has since hosted numerous events to not only raise awareness of the ACS Victory Board, but to raise funds to support many of the local ACS programs in Glynn County. Coping with cancer can be an immense and complicated burden. The reality of cancer is that many patients, especially those with limited resources, must overcome numerous hurdles to access timely, high-quality cancer care. Some patients may not have reliable transportation to medical appointments. One year, the chapter purchased more than $2,500 in gas cards that were distributed to cancer patients at Southeast Georgia Health System. The ACS Road to Recovery program also provides free transportation to and from treatment for cancer patients who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Lodging expenses may be another barrier to cancer care. Some cancer patients may not be able to afford out-of-town lodging during treatment. The ACS Victory Board recently donated to the new Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Hope Lodge in Jacksonville where free nights of lodging are provided for patients and their caregivers who must travel far from home for treatment. Supporting the ACS Victory Board helps to ensure cancer patients, survivors, like Greg,

The 2020 Victory Gala Co-Chairs: Katie Widener, Lindsey Crabb, Nikki Maichle, Mary Margaret Shiver, Lauren Lavin

and caregivers continue to get the support they need. While the annual Victory Gala will not be held in 2020, the ACS Victory Board hopes to be able to return to in person events with Merry Movies in December, the annual DaddyDaughter Dance in February, and a golf tour-

nament next spring. For updates, check their website and social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. If you’d like to make a donation to support the ACS Victory Board, please do so via their website at acsvictoryboard.org or by Venmo @acsvictoryboard. (continues)

By supporting the We Live Here, We Give Here organizations, we can build a stronger, more united community. You are that community, and these charitable non-profits need you now more than ever. Together we can make a difference.

PRESERVATION JUST MAKES CENTS Photos by John Krivec Photography

A WORLD UNTO ITSELF IS ONE WAY TO DESCRIBE YOUR SURROUNDINGS WHEN YOU WALK DOWN THE LONG SANDY DRIVEWAYS THROUGH TWO PARCELS OF LAND THAT WERE ONCE PART OF ST. SIMONS ISLAND’S HISTORIC OATLAND PLANTATION. NESTLED WITHIN MARITIME FOREST THICK WITH LIVE OAKS, PINES, PALMETTO, AND OTHER INDIGENOUS COASTAL PLANTS ARE TRACTS OF MORE THAN 70 COMBINED ACRES OF OATLAND NORTH THAT THE ST. SIMONS LAND TRUST ACQUIRED IN 2018. THROUGH AGREEMENTS DEVELOPED WITH THE PROPERTIES’ FORMER OWNERS, THE ACREAGE IS BEING PURCHASED IN INSTALLMENTS BY THE LAND TRUST OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

ssisting with this major land conservation project are literally thousands of individuals, including residents, part-timers, and vacationers, who are customers and clients of popular local businesses. The businesses themselves are loyal partners of the Land Trust and serve as facilitators of a voluntary giving program that was launched in October 2017. Sara Baker, who developed and manages the program, said that the initial idea came from donation programs started at The Cloister at Sea Island Resort and Barbara Jean’s Restaurant. In 2001, Sea Island began including a voluntary Land Trust donation of two dollars per each night’s stay at The Cloister. Shortly thereafter, businessman Jim Barta, who co-

owns Barbara Jean’s Restaurant with his wife Barbara, started something similar. “Jim began asking his diners to donate twenty-five cents with every meal purchased to support the work of the Land Trust. He knew that a quarter is not much money to tag onto the price of a nice meal, but that those quarters quickly add up into sizable amounts,” explains Baker. “They were true visionaries in thinking that small contributions from many could make an enormous, positive impact on the whole community.” That initiative inspired that small contribution concept became a highly successful giving program that quickly grew from a few partici-

pating restaurants to include retailers, service providers, multiple lodging companies, art galleries, and media partners. In 2019, the program won the Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Hospitality Award for Partner of the Year. With more than 30 business partners serving the needs of thousands, the vision held by Sea Island and Jim Barta of community-wide support for land conservation had become a reality. many small coins can soon fill a large jar, the Land Trust decided to refresh, rebrand, and rename the program to say just that. This month, the original 1% for St. Simons program is being relaunched as Pennies for Preservation, A Voluntary 1% Giving Program. Program partner Clay Caldwell from Commonground Creative made the brand come alive with a new identity. “It’s truly pennies that most people are contributing when they participate in this totally voluntary program,” added Baker. “And, as Jim Barta showed us, pennies really do add up.” In fact, the countless small contributions have created funds that are sizable enough that the program’s business partners wanted to make certain the money went to something tangible. And lasting. Since few things more lasting than the preservation of land, especially seventy-plus acres of marsh-fronted, forested land with historic significance, important habitat for rare plants and animals, and other high-value environmental features, the Land Trust’s leadership completely agreed. With input from its program steering committee and partners, instead of Pennies for Preservation revenue going into a general land acquisition account, the Land Trust has designated those contributions to help pay for and conserve forever the Oatland properties. The two tracts of land are comprised of roughly thirty-five upland acres each and are located on Lawrence Road on the island’s north end. The northernmost tract, that contains an inholding where Bascom Murrah’s animal rescue, The Farm at Oatland North, is located, is contiguous with Cannon’s Point Preserve. The southern tract also has an inholding that is owned by Murrah’s sister-in-law, Jackie Davis. The two properties together have more than 500 acres of protected marshlands. Adjacency to the salt 38

marsh creates an important connection to the lower Altamaha River corridor, a rich estuary that has been listed as a high priority for conservation since the 1970s by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. Except for the Davis and Murrah homes, the land has remained relatively undisturbed since it was purchased by the parents of Jackie Davis, Barbara Hasell Murrah, and their brother Nat Hasell. Their father Buddy Hasell was a native of St. Simons Island who, before World War II, worked as manager of the McKinnon St. Simons Airport, later served as a caretaker for Little St. Simons Island, and had a long and distinguished career as a pilot. After retiring from Eastern Airlines as a captain, he and his wife Jackie returned to their beloved St. Simons and built their dream home overlooking the marsh at the eastern edge of the Oatland property. Evidence of human occupation dating back thousands of years has been discovered on this land, including environmentally important shell middens created by Native Americans. What became known as Oatland Plantation, where Sea Island cotton was grown, was previously owned by colonist James Bruce, whose descendants still own many acres south of the former Davis property. In setting up management plans for the Oatland tracts, the Land Trust followed conservation best practices it had established with other properties, including Cannon’s Point Preserve. The management of that 608-acre wilderness area is informed by professional expertise from six task forces that provide invaluable advice in the areas of recreation and infrastructure, history, education, and conservation of environmental attributes. More than thirty task force members represent state and federal agencies, colleges and universities, conservation organizations, NGOs, foundations, and others in the scientific and environmental communities. With so many dedicated experts from the University of Georgia

Marine Extension, College of Coastal Georgia, GA DNR, TNC, Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Preserve, Georgia Forestry Commission, Coastal Georgia Historical Society, Little St. Simons Island, and many other institutions actively collaborating with the Land Trust in the ongoing management of Cannon’s Point, the Land Trust and its Pennies for Preservation partners are excited that the former Murrah property will soon be rolled under the CPP Ecological Management Plan. And with TNC holding and monitoring the conservation easement on these combined 643 acres, Pennies for Preservation proceeds will indeed be ensuring tangible and lasting benefits to St. Simons Island. Such concrete, positive impact is evidenced by the protected ecosystems found on the Oatland tracts. These natural areas provide essential habitat and ample food sources for wildlife, including protected and rare species of birds such as the wood stork and the painted bunting, a species that nests on the acreage during summer months. In addition, several bald eagles that roost in the vicinity use the area for foraging. The properties’ salt marsh also performs invaluable services such as reducing storm surge, minimizing erosion, supporting essential habitat for fisheries, and provides habitat for manatee and the diamondback terrapin, a species of concern in Georgia. Acquiring the Oatland properties represents land conservation at its finest. It’s an example of multiple organizations, businesses, and countless contributors collaborating with one another to protect and preserve a community’s most cherished assets and ensuring those assets remain healthy and viable for future generations. “The program donations are only one penny of every dollar,” says Pennies for Preservation program partner Justin Henshaw, owner of Henshaw Companies, which includes Fuse Frozen Co. and Golden Isles Wedding Association. “But they add up to be a substantial amount, making a significant impact on protecting St. Simons.”

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS In addition to local chapters of well-known civic organizations like Rotary International, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, the YMCA, and others, there are a significant number of non-profits and charitable organizations in the Golden Isles. Our purpose for compiling this list is to let individuals know what services may be available to them in our community through these groups, and to provide information about how you can support these organizations and their charitable works.

Coastal Coalition for Children Coastal Coalition for Children (CC4C) equips parents/guardians with the knowledge to provide safe and stable homes for their children. Brunswick Chapter of The Links Adoption-Share Adoption-Share is leveraging technology to bring transparency and reform to the adoption process. Their most recent application FamilyMatch (family-match.org) leverages data and predictive analytics to more efficiently and appropriately connect children in foster care with waiting families. Family-Match uses compatibility assessments co-authored by two former senior researchers at eHarmony that hones in on key attributes found in peer reviewed research that can predict success or failure in foster and adoption placements. Their tool provides a relational fit score which is followed once the child is placed in an adoptive home. Family-Match applies the learning from the outcomes data to reiterate their computational model used to generate relational fit scores over time. Their work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and by Anderson Cooper on CNN. They are currently seeking a parttime volunteer who has a knack for Excel and organization. They’re also super open to volunteers with design/communications/ PR background! Donations are important to fund the program. Adoption-share has a critical need of $10,000 that they are hoping to secure before year’s end. Visit the website to give. adoption-share.com

100 Women Who Care SSI 100 Women Who Care SSI (100WWC) is a group of women interested in supporting the Golden Isles community by combining their donations to impact local charities. The original 100WWC initiative began in Michigan in 2006 when Karen Dunigan gathered a group of women together as a quick and efficient fundraising idea. Following an hour-long meeting, each of the women wrote a check for $100 directly to the local charity they selected, raising $12,800 to buy 300 new cribs. Since then, chapters have formed across the country. Cathy Foley, Sandy Metzger, Susan Mundy, Melissa Stroud, and Catherine Wood created the SSI chapter, motivated by this unique opportunity to significantly impact the lives of those in need in our community. Their activism is founded in the belief that

46

E L E G A N T I S L A N D L I V I N G / #CommUNITY

when people join together they can do more as a group than they can by themselves. 100WWC’s members come from all walks of life, and believe that acting collectively they have the ability to contribute to the growth of our community in ways that they may have never thought possible as individuals. 100WWC members meet four times a year to collectively nominate and vote for a local charitable organization to receive a one-time donation of $100 from each member. Any member can nominate a non-profit and three are randomly selected to give presentations prior to the vote. So, during each quarterly nomination process, members learn about at least three charities. With that knowledge, not only do they choose the donation recipient, they also gain knowledge about these organizations, their needs, and the services

they provide, giving members the opportunity to dig deeper and find volunteer possibilities within the community. Membership in 100WWC continues to grow daily, and currently includes 220 women, thanks to this tremendous community with very generous constituents. The first charity to receive donations from 100WWC was Memory Matters, receiving $18,200 from 182 members in Winter 2020. In Spring 2020, 100WWC allowed their members to choose one of two charities that received close votes: Beloved Ministries and The Firebox Initiative. $21,550 from 208 members was distributed to them ($10,850 and $10,700, respectively). The Summer 2020 recipient was just selected at time of writing as Hand in Hand of Glynn. You’ll find information about these organizations

below. Memory Matters will be highlighted on page 79. 100WWC’s next meeting will be November 5th. If you’re interested in joining these community-minded ladies or learning more about what they do and how non-profits can be nominated, visit their website. 100womenwhocareSSI.com

Beloved Ministries Beloved Ministries helps single moms and their children encounter and experience the transforming power and redemptive love of Jesus Christ by connecting them to each other and to Him so they can begin the restoration process spiritually, emotionally, and physically. They believe single mom homes can overcome many challenges when they have a place to connect and learn both Biblical truths and practical life skills. Beloved offers bi-monthly events where single mothers and their children enjoy a meal and fellowship. Free childcare is provided while moms listen to speakers who address topics like “Finding Hope in the Midst of Hard Circumstances,” and “Parenting as a Single Mother and Boundaries.” Moms then meet in small groups where a mentor facilitates deeper discussions with Q&A and more individualized time. These mentors stay in touch with the moms in between meetings to encourage and walk along beside them. The children are also being poured into during the gatherings with their own intentional program by the Children’s Ministry team, that includes games, a Bible lesson and lots of love. Volunteer opportunities are available for Children’s Ministry team members, small group leaders, and food servers. Donations are welcome and can be made by check payable to Beloved Ministries; P.O. Box 30864 Sea Island, GA 31561 or Venmo: @belovedministries. You can also support the ministry by spreading the word to single moms you know and inviting them to come to a Beloved gathering.

Gatherings will be in the church parking lot from 6-6:45pm at Community Church on St. Simons Island on 10/6, 10/20 and 11/3 and at The Chapel in Brunswick on 10/13, 10/27 and 11/10. Email hello@belovedminitries.com to attend. belovedministries.com

The Firebox Initiative If you’ve been a faithful EIL reader for the past few years, you’re probably familiar with The Firebox Initiative, founded by the folks of Southern Soul Barbeque as a way to give back to the community in the way the community helped them following the fire that destroyed their building and disrupted their livelihood in March 2010. Their mission is to provide a helping hand in the form of financial grants to those in our local Coastal Georgia hospitality and service industry family in need of emergency assistance, as well as scholarship opportunities for qualifying applicants. During the pandemic they have served free meals to service industry employees and families and distributed funds to help with rent, utility bills, and other expenses while restaurants were shuttered and employees were out of work. While Firebox is typically funded by the multi-day BBQ extravaganza known as the Firebox BBQ on the Bluff that hosts pitmasters from across the nation, this year’s event has been cancelled. However, our Firebox friends are known innovators and creative thinkers, so keep an eye out for random pop-ups and collaborative dinners with invited guest pitmasters, chefs, and makers, with proceeds that will benefit Firebox. You can help them out directly by making donations at Southern Soul Barbeque or online via the Firebox website. If you’re a service industry worker facing financial hardship, you can apply for assistance online there too. ssbbqfirebox.com

First,” considering housing to be a right, not a reward for a positive clinical outcome. Everyone deserves a safe, dry place to call home. The group purchased a 4.25-acre parcel in Brunswick on which they are building 60 tiny homes to house those experiencing homelessness. Each 240 square foot home will have its own kitchen, full bath and bedroom/sitting area and a covered porch. Each house costs $30,000 or $35,000 furnished. Once housed, they will provide residents with services on site to help them work on other issues they may be facing. To that end, they are completing a Community Center that will house classrooms for instruction in life skills, medical services facilities, laundry, kitchen, and an office for the executive director. There will be community gardens for growing fresh fruits and vegetables. Brunswick has a 39% poverty rate and is not only one of the poorest cities in the state, but also in the nation. While their focus is to house single adults, they hope this gated community of tiny homes becomes a model for housing other people experiencing homelessness in our community and in small towns throughout Georgia. Their goal is to change the trajectory of a life, one tiny home at a time. For volunteer and donation or sponsorship opportunities, visit their website. handinhandofglynn.org

CASA Glynn/Friends of CASA The mission of CASA Glynn, also serving Camden County, is to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers from our community to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children. Each year, over 500,000 children in the United States are thrust into court through no fault of their own. Some are victims of violence, psychological torment or sexual abuse. Others have been neglected or even abandoned by their own parents. A complex legal network of lawyers, social workers, and judges work tirelessly to try to give these children the attention they deserve – but the children are often frightened and confused. They need a voice that can be heard in the court. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically

handle just one case at a time – and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant that children need in order to thrive. Volunteers are screened and fully trained. Application information and forms are available on the website. Donations are critical to maintain CASA’s mission as funding has been cut in recent months and the annual spring fashion luncheon fundraiser was cancelled due to the pandemic. The support of generous donors keeps the program alive. Donations are easy via the Donate Now tab on the website. Also keep an eye out for more information about the Jingle Bell Run fundraiser planned for December 5th. casaglynn.org

The program has two primary components: 1) Birdies Fore Love – RSM employee giving challenge. Each year RSM owners and employees raise funds for local charities aligned with the missions of the RSM US Foundation and the Davis Love Foundation. In 2019, the program raised more than $3.8 million for more than 70 charities in the communities where RSM employees live and work. The strong fundraising through Birdies Fore Love, coupled with matching contributions from the RSM US Foundation and proceeds from the tournament, has brought the program total to more than $17 million donated over the ten years of the tournament. 2) Birdies Fore Love – PGA TOUR on-course competition. In collaboration with the PGA TOUR, RSM

Birdies Fore Love will again donate over $1 Million to charitable organizations through an on-course competition over the first eleven events of the 2020-21 PGA TOUR Season. In addition to weekly winners, the top three players who accumulate the most birdies (or better) throughout those first eleven events will earn $300,000, $150,000 and $50,000, respectively, for children- or family-focused charitable organizations of each player’s choice. Last year, Scottie Scheffler (139 birdies or better) won the overall program, followed by Lanto Griffin (138) and Denny McCarthy (135). Scheffler chose to spread the love and donate $200,000 to the Davis Love Foundation, $50,000 to the Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation and $50,000 to Triumph Over Kids Cancer. Both Griffin and McCarthy have chosen to use their donations to start their own foundations to support youth in their communities. You can check out the 2020 competition’s live leaderboard, weekly winners and remaining events on the RSM Classic website at rsmclassic.com. There is also a donation link if you’d like to contribute to Birdies Fore Love to help at-risk youth in the areas of education, hunger, housing or health.

Coastal Georgia Ducks Unlimited Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. DU conserves by restoring grasslands, replanting forests, working with landowners, and acquiring land. Locally, $8.7 million dollars was invested into three projects within the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area. A total of 4,500 acres were enhanced within Altamaha WMA during these three projects. DU and its partners repaired levees and installed water-control

structures along Darien River, as well as replacing structures to regulate water levels in all three impoundments of the Rhett’s Island Unit. Ducks Unlimited always welcomes volunteers to help at the youth Greenwing event, banquet and to join their Committee. Donations can be made through the website with reference to GA011 (Local Chapter Number) or by attending or sponsoring annual banquet events. They are planning to hold a virtual fundraiser in October or November of 2020. The annual banquet is currently scheduled for February 4th of 2021. Coastal Georgia Historical Society For over 50 years, the Society has been a faithful steward of the historic collections and buildings entrusted to their care, including the St. Simons Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling and the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach, now home to the World War II Home Front Museum. Under the care of the Society, these buildings are operated as one of only a few history museums in the state accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Society opens both museums to the public seven days a week, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and conducting tours for thousands of students of all ages. You can support the Society by becoming a member, attending or sponsoring the Little Light Music concerts when they return next year, by making a donation, contributing an endowment gift, or volunteering. Volunteer

opportunities include being a docent at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum or World War II Home Front Museum, sharing talents for specific projects, organizing and staffing events, assisting with education programs, and serving as committee members. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Education Director, Sandy Jensen, at sjensen@coastalgeorgiahistory.org or 912.634.7093. The Society receives no Federal, state, or county funding and relies entirely on admissions, membership and event proceeds, individual and corporate donations, and grants to sustain operations. Contributions help the Society preserve the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, the World War II Home Front Museum, and provide year-round programming for adults and schoolchildren. A Preservation Maintenance Fund for the World War II Home Front Museum and the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and Keeper’s Dwelling have been established, and the income generated from these funds will be used to complete a regular schedule of essential work on the historic buildings. The funds are separately held and restricted so as to ensure that all funds are used exclusively for the prescribed purpose; the funds are collectively managed for efficiency and accounted for as an asset of the Society. Detailed preservation maintenance plans are available upon request. You can help preserve the rich history of Coastal Georgia for generations to come. For more information, please contact Nina Witman at 912.634.7096, or nwitman@coastalgeorgiahistory.org. coastalgeorgiahistory.org

Coastal Georgia Honor Flight Coastal Georgia Honor Flight was established to honor our community’s veterans for their sacrifices. Their mission is to fly heroes via a private, chartered airliner – at absolutely no cost to them – from Brunswick (Camden, Glynn, McIntosh and others as space is available), to Washington, D.C. so these heroes can reflect at their national memorials. Since 2015 they have made it possible for 345 veterans to see their war memorials and the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, including the famous Changing of the Guard Ceremony, the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima), Air Force and Navy Memorials as time permits during the one day trip. Priority for space on flights is given to WWII veterans then Korean and Vietnam War survivors. Veterans who are terminally ill, from any conflict, get top priority. The 2020 Coastal Georgia Honor Flight was rescheduled to May 1, 2021. There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to help with different things leading up to the flight and flight day. If interested, please complete the application on the website. Donations are welcome and easy to make via the website under the donate tab or by mailing a check to P.O. Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation (CCGF) The mission statement of CCGF is simple: Strengthening our communities through engaged philanthropy. Community foundations serve to bring together people, businesses and organizations to promote civic and community betterment through strategic and solution-focused giving. By understanding both the needs of the community and the interests of fundholders, they are able to thoughtfully match these entities as partners and provide sustained, mindful giving. “You don’t give to us, you give through us.” By establishing a fund, a donor is able to take advantage of significant tax benefits while directing the impact of their donation both now and in the future. 2020 has been a year of pivoting as we all learn how to navigate in a socially distanced world. There are several collaborative events with area non-profits that have been canceled for the remainder of 2020 due to the pandemic, but CCGF has been able to be highly impactful nonetheless. The Community Emergency Needs Fund with the United Way distributed $644,000 to 27 agencies since April, with a focus on agencies in Glynn, Camden and McIntosh counties dealing with issues related to food distribution, providing health services and then added assistance with economic recovery and business restoration to later rounds of grant giving. Community Foundations are accessible to everyone and can, quite simply, make navigating the sometimes overwhelming decision on how to direct funds a simpler process. At the end of the day, CCGF is here to help donors/fund-holders maximize the impact of their philanthropy. coastalgeorgiafoundation.org

THE ARTS COMMUNITY has been hit particularly hard by shutdowns and restrictions on social gatherings. Events and concerts have been canceled, stages have remained empty, or artists have scrambled to transition to offering virtual performances. While these nonprofit organizations may not be the first that come to mind for charitable giving, our community benefits greatly from the programs they provide and they too need our support. Please visit their websites for event schedules, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, and other ways to show your support. Most importantly, when live performances and events resume, attend them!

IN PRAISE OF WHAT PERSISTS by Linda Wright

As faithful local patrons begin to anticipate the familiar seasonal offerings of local cultural arts, many may find themselves at this moment confronted with at least some degree of uncertainty. It is essential to know, however, that we are in good company, that we stand on the shoulders of giants.

n challenging times, American writer William Faulkner was especially fond of embracing what he called recurring eternal verities, those values that provide a mantle of serenity and comfort. One of the most beloved of these is symphonic music. To that end, The Coastal Symphony of Georgia is proud to announce that, while its 38th season has been unavoidably postponed this fall, the four performances are scheduled to commence in January 2021. It is reassuring to know that what matters most somehow persists; that necessary delay is not defeat. Michelle Merrill, Musical Director and Conductor, offers a new season that truly celebrates what continues to endure and thrive in orchestral composition.

D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning), an evocative 20th Century piece written with a fresh and joyful character. Camille Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto follows, featuring Christopher Adkins, principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Tremendously demanding for soloists, this work is a perennial favorite of virtuoso cellists and is included on Yo-Yo Ma’s recording of Five Great Cello Concertos. Dmitri Shostakovich’s soaring Fifth Symphony, written during Stalin’s notorious purges, closes the evening with its affirmation of triumph in a time of despair.

Opening night on January 25 commences with Sir William Walton’s Suite One from his Façade (a collaboration with poet Edith Stillwell), weaving an innovative potpourri of familiar styles of musical expression including a polka, a waltz, a yodeling song, a tango, and a tarantella! Then, the Symphony’s principal flautist, soloist Les Roettges, takes center stage in Carl Reinecke’s technically demanding Flute Concerto in D major. Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 ends the program, concluding with a majestic movement that feels like a victory hymn.

March 29th celebrates two giants of classical composition. An intriguing Don Juan by Richard Strauss launches the program, depicting a musical interpretation of this colorful character with a blend of boldness and playfulness, followed by an inevitable melancholy as the life story comes to a close. Johannes Brahms’ revered Symphony No. 2 concludes this evening of two super stars. However, a delightful surprise awaits the audience in between the Strauss and Brahms opuses. Siren Sounds Waltz by 15-yearold Alma Deutscher rejects the notion that 21st Century music should reflect the ugliness of contemporary conflicts. Instead, her waltz uses the sounds of the modern world and transforms them into something unexpectedly beautiful.

The second concert, March 8, begins with Lili Boulanger’s

The final concert, April 12, offers a joyful presentation of a

beloved icon. As part of a global initiative to honor Ludwig von Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the program will begin with the Coriolan Overture and end the evening with the complex and original Symphony No. 3, Eroica. Richard Wagner’s musical legacy provides a bridge between the two Beethoven pieces with his symphonic poem, Sigfried Idyll, a lilting expression of both paternal and romantic love.

This newest symphonic season may perhaps help us move forward with grace, its splendid music a kind of forever promise we continue to make to ourselves and to others. Faulkner believed that we would not merely endure; we would prevail because the uniqueness of our individual spirits continues to blend with a larger community that embraces the eternal verities. This persistent, magnificent endurance, so powerfully depicted in the music compositions and performances of these four concerts, is a central fact of the human condition and a reminder to honor the intricate connective web of those who have led the way, to remember who we are, and to go in peace. The mission of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia is to engage, enrich, and inspire the community through artistically vibrant musical performances. The Election & Market Returns P r o v i d e d b y J o n a t h a n H a n e y, F i n a n c i a l A d v i s o r

W

e’ve reached that point in the election cycle where the same questions are surfacing in our conversations with clients. “How will the election affect the stock market?” or “Should I get out of the market until the election is over?” These are valid questions and we welcome these conversations; however, politics has less of an effect on the economy and the markets than the media leads us to believe. As you can see from the chart below, the market is pretty consistent across presidential terms, returning an average of 10.3% per term. The return data on Chart 1 may come as a surprise to you depending on your political leaning. You’ll be even more surprised when we look at annual return data. Conventional wisdom says Democrats are generally bad for the economy and the stock market because of their big government tendencies and high tax preferences, while fiscally conservative Republicans are good. Well, this widely accepted belief is actually misleading based on annual data going back to the end of WWII. From 1952 through June 2020, annualized real stock market returns under Democrats have been 10.6% compared with 4.8% for Republicans. (Source: Forbes, “Historical Stock Market Returns Under every President,” Klebnikov) We do not think this implies cause and effect, however, since the economic cycle does not take heed of the election cycle. Some presidents take office during 88

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

prosperous times while others take office during disruptions beyond their control. Rather, we believe these return figures simply suggest that you cannot rely on political circumstances to make investment decisions. Since Apple just recently became the first public company to cross the $2 trillion milestone, let’s celebrate their accomplishment by using them as an example of why politics shouldn’t dictate investment decisions. A little over a decade ago, analysts were worried that Apple’s

best days were over as it had lost the ability to innovate further. Its main products were the Macintosh computer, iPod, and iTunes. The company generated $19 billion in annual sales in 2006. Apple then launched a cultural revolution called the iPhone and the trajectory of the company and the world as we knew it was forever changed. Over the past 13 years, Apple has sold billions of iPhones, invented remarkable products such as the Apple Watch, iPad, and AirPods, and improved quality of life through its Services offerings such as the

tolerance is the best course of action. The chart below proves that investors who stay the course will be rewarded in the long-term.

App Store, Apple TV+, iCloud, Apple Pay, and so on. Since the iPhone debut in 2007, their stock is up over 2,700% and they now earn $60 billion a quarter! This incredible growth story is a result of relentless innovation, resilient adaptability, and prudent decision making. The political party in office had nothing to do with Apple’s success. If an investor sold Apple when Obama was elected based on the fear of increased corporate taxes, they would have missed out on a massive return. Yes, some political environments are easier and more profitable to operate in than in others, but ultimately, what makes a business profitable (or not profitable) is the actual business itself. This is why we build your portfolio using a “bottom up” approach, meaning that the process of analyzing the fundamentals of businesses guides our investment decisions. We own good businesses for you now and

we will continue to own good businesses after the election. We didn’t predict a pandemic and we can’t predict election results, but we do know that disruption always occurs, which is why we own durable, profitable businesses that will adapt and innovate through any economic cycle. The next few months may be volatile as the election tit-for-tat heats up and the media instills fear through headlines, but we firmly believe that staying invested in an allocation in-line with your risk

Lastly, remember that our political system was deliberately designed with checks and balances in place to limit the authority held by one person. Both sides are out to make the other look as apocalyptic as possible in hopes of motivating their donors and voters. Policy changes will occur no matter the outcome, but nothing as radical as proposed on the campaign trail thanks the strategic separation of powers we have in place. One election does not make or break a nation. Before long, the 2022 mid-terms will come into focus and the presidential election in 2024, with the American people ready to cast their vote and make adjustments again and again.

hange is the law of life. Whether you’re getting married, having a baby, moving, or starting a new job, your financial commitments will most likely change. That’s where a reliable insurance agency comes in. Morris & Templeton Insurance wants to help you celebrate these milestones in your life, and protect you and your family as you go through them. We’ve compiled a list of some very important life changes, that will also lead to some very important changes in your insurance coverage.

One of the most important life changes to share with your agent is when it’s time to move or buy that dream vacation home. You’ll definitely need to update your homeowners insurance policy. If you’re adding on to your home, you’ll also need a higher limit on your policy to protect every square foot and the belongings in it. If you ever change your mortgage lender, you’ll also want your insurer to know.

Are you getting married? It’s good to let your insurance agency know before walking down the aisle. They will want to make sure you and your spouse are both protected: adding both new legal names to all policies, setting up the right life insurance plans, and lining up any new home insurance.

Did you just land a new job or start your own business? Your agent wants to celebrate with you and protect your assets. If your new job comes with a new salary, you may need additional life insurance protection. Your agent will be able to look, in detail, at the life insurance your company offers. Many times, it isn’t enough to fully protect your loved ones in the event that the unthinkable hap-

been dreaming of? No matter how big or small, home-based or a new office building, you’ll need to ensure everything and everyone is properly protected. Even if these life changes aren’t happening in your life, it’s a good idea to check in with your insurance agent each year. Give Morris & Templeton Insurance a call for all of your insurance needs. The agency is here for you and will celebrate you every step of the way!

CCGA WAIVING TEST REQUIREMENTS Students applying for freshman admission to the College of Coastal Georgia will not have to submit standardized SAT or ACT test scores for the 2021 spring, summer, or fall terms. The new requirements were recently approved by the University System of Georgia in light of testing interruptions caused by the

COVID-19 pandemic. According to Dr. Jason Umfress, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, “The current pandemic has placed institutions in a unique situation and has allowed many colleges to evaluate their existing policies, including a review of the enrollment process. With test scores being waived for the upcoming year,

we will include and evaluate a student’s past academic performance as an indicator of success here at the College while eliminating potential barriers to the enrollment process.” The College is currently accepting applications for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2021 semesters. For more information, contact Tiffany King at tking@ccga.edu or 912.279.5703.

Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. I live in Oak Forest on the mid south end of the Island. It’s convenient for my lifestyle because I’m always in and out of my home and most everything is nearby. I love the neighborhood because there are always people out exercising, walking their dogs, kids playing or riding their bikes. It has a happy family feel. Inside my home I consider my décor style to be casual yet disposable. I love to keep fresh flowers on display. They instantly add life and beauty to any room. One of my most treasured pieces in my home is a portrait of my daughter that I had done when she was six years old. It brings back so many happy memories for me. When I am at home, my favorite thing to do is cook. I find it very relaxing. I cook all or part of almost every meal on the grill. We try to eat healthy and grilling makes that much easier and so much less cleanup. My new favorite recipe is grilled pork chops with a red pepper jelly glaze, rice pilaf and grilled asparagus. I also love to host and entertain friends. One of my favorite things to make for a girls night is a charcuterie board. It’s always a crowd favorite! My favorite place to spend most of my time is on our screened porch. I sit out there every morning and most evenings after dinner even when it’s hot! It’s definitely my happy place. This is also where I keep a lot of my potted plants which I recently started really getting into. I’m not that good with them, but I am enjoying learning. I have several that are doing pretty well which is a miracle. If I am not at home or working, I like to find time to play tennis. I am absolutely terrible, but I enjoy it. I also love to sit or walk on the beach in the early morning. My husband and I have a great group of longtime friends that we enjoy spending time with. All in all, I feel very blessed to live and work in this beautiful place I call home. Micki Carter is an Associate Broker at DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty.
