PUBLISHER’S LETTER
W
e’ve all come up with a New Year’s resolution only to see it slowly fade as January turns into February. Let’s be honest, some of us don’t even get out of
January before our New Year’s resolution dies like the poinsettia on our front porch. A Forbes Health/One Poll survey found that the average resolution lasts 3.74 months. Only 8% of respondents tend to stick with their goals for one month, while 22% last two months, 20% last three
months and 13% last four months. Most people aren’t ready to commit to their resolutions and give up because they either lose motivation, haven’t prioritized their goals, or swap their resolutions for newer, more relevant personal goals. Swapping resolutions for newer personal goals is exactly what I suggest for 2024! This year, instead of beginning the New Year with a resolution, try learning something new. Supposedly it takes approximately 10,000 hours to learn a new skill. If that’s the case, I’m an expert on binge-watching Netflix! Learning something new always sounds fun, but then we must put in the work. When it’s day three trying to master a new language on Babble and a Seinfeld episode that I’ve already seen 30 times comes on, it’s easy to put down the Babble app. According to Josh Kaufman, author of The First 20 Hours: How to Learn Anything…. Fast, it only takes 20 hours to learn a skill. He says, “20 hours are doable – that’s about 45 minutes a day for about a month.” Here are 4 steps to help you get started on your journey and stay focused: 1. Break down a skill into its components. The first thing you need to do is decide what you want to learn, and then break it down into smaller, manageable pieces. 2. Learn enough to know when you’re making a mistake. Get three to four resources about what it is you’re trying to learn. It could be books, YouTube, or online information. 3. Remove all barriers to practice. Stay focused while concentrating on your new activity. No watching Seinfeld during French lessons on Babble! 4. Practice for at least 20 hours. To overcome what Kaufman calls the “frustration barrier” (that period in the beginning when you’re painfully incompetent and you know it), you must commit to sticking with your new activity for at least 20 hours. By that point, you will be amazed at how good you are! For 2024, I’m thinking “Learn to Play Chinese Mahjong Step by Step!”

elcome to 2024! If there’s anything the past few years have taught us, it’s to appreciate our local community and this place we call home. Our award-winning Marshes of Glynn Libraries and Golden Isles
Arts & Humanities will be kicking off 2024 with the return of The Big Read. This year’s book selection of L. Frank Baum’s classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and its resonating message, “There’s no place like home,” seems a perfect theme to begin this new year. We start down the path ahead in the company of friends and traveling with courage, a heart full of love, and hopefully, some wisdom. Join us to see the wonderful ways in which it unwinds and the people and places we encounter along the way. It’s always an adventure!

Once that is accomplished, the Wizard and Dorothy plan to leave Oz on a balloon, but the balloon mistakenly leaves without Dorothy. She then sets off on yet another quest to seek assistance from Glinda the Witch of the South. Glinda summons the flying monkeys to return Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion to their respective homes and tells Dorothy that her ability to return home has been within her silver slippers all along. book written about the movie’s ruby red shoes!
It’s hard to imagine the movie without Judy Garland’s iconic rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow as she wistfully longs for a magical, colorful place that exists far beyond her stark grey surroundings. Even more difficult to imagine is Dorothy without her signature ruby slippers! In fact, you’d probably be hard-pressed to find someone who recalls that in Baum’s book the shoes Dorothy clicks together to return to Kansas are silver. Sparkling red shoes were created for the movie because they made a more dramatic visual image on the screen and now ruby slippers are synonymous with Dorothy and dreams of home. In fact, the actual red sequined shoes used during the making of the film are among the most beloved artifacts from movie history and have quite the story of their own. A " heart is shown not by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others." - The Wizard, The Wizard of Oz
The dramatic impact of Technicolor was the focus for the filmmakers once again when it came to the color of the Emerald City. In Baum’s book, Dorothy and her companions are forced to don glasses that are fastened at the back by a lock which is kept by the Gate Guardian when they arrive in Emerald City. Unbeknownst to them, it is these glasses that make the city appear green. Oz later admits that he forces the people of the city to wear the glasses to make the city seem more magical than it actually is. In the movie, there are no such glasses, Emerald City appeared green with no need for visual enhancement. Remember the horses?! In Baum’s book, the Wicked Witch of the West had only one eye. Her role and presence in the book weren’t nearly as significant as the focus on her in the film and did not include the early introduction of her character as Dorothy’s nemesis. Actress Margaret Hamilton’s brilliant portrayal further helped bring the character front and center. Her memorable performance in the film made her one of the most famous incarnations of witches, ranking the character as one of the American Film Institute’s Top 50 best villains of all time. Finally, in the book, Dorothy has significant adventures after meeting the Wizard and traveling to find Glinda that are not detailed in the movie. This was likely due to time constraints and the more fantastic elements of the story that would have been difficult and costly to create in the days before CGI. In Baum’s story Dorothy’s time in Oz is lengthy and her absence from Kansas is real, not simply explained away as a dream. Ah, but what a dream it was! Oz Museum located in Wamego, Kansas

early 150 years ago in the bohemian neighborhood of Montmartre, Paris, theatrical agent and entrepreneur Rodolphe Salis embraced the art of storytelling in a different way. By establishing what was initially called “Le Cabaret Artistique,” he began a culture in which
musicians, writers, poets, and dancers would gather to discuss their ideas and works over food and drinks. The city’s wealthy and famous mingled with the bohemians and artists of the neighborhood and the Pigalle over evening meals with entertainment that combined music, stories, poetry, and comedy with political commentary. Salis hosted these social soirées in a small club called Le Chat Noir and began each show with a monologue joking about current events. By 1896, there were more than 50 cabarets and cafes with music in Paris and approximately a dozen music halls, which hosted more lavish and theatrical productions with elaborate costumes, singing, and dancing. The Moulin Rouge, the Olympia, the Alhambra, and the summer-only outdoor venue of Printania were some of the best-known examples of these music halls featuring what we would now call cabaret-style acts. It is the spirit of these Parisian clubs and performance halls that the Coastal Symphony of Georgia seeks to evoke for this year’s signature fundraiser, Cabaret de Paris. JANUARY 2024

They have planned a grand soirée of glamour, extravagance, and enchantment to take place at Frederica Golf Club on February 23 at 6:00 p.m. You are invited to embrace your inner bon vivant and channel the chic style of Chanel by attending in sophisticated attire. Whether donning a dashing suit, a glamorous gown, or a fabulous fashion statement that is uniquely your own, you’ll want to dress to impress for this elegant event. In the style of the original Parisian cabaret artistique, dinner will be accompanied by entertainment that includes singing, dancing, poetry, and comedic performances. The audience will be treated to an original, full production show and true Cabaret experience presented by the Savannah-based Stardust Pixxies with dancing, favorite French songs as well as tunes in English, with comedy and poetry interspersed throughout. A cocktail reception will precede the threecourse gourmet dinner featuring French cuisine that will have you wondering if you’re actually sitting in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. The unique items and experiences included in the evening’s live and silent auctions are sure to stir up bidding as energetic as the traffic on the Champs-Élysée. Unraveling the Art of DENTAL SELF-CARE By Shayla Sanchez and Jennifer Symmes, Plantation Dental SSI
S
elf-care has become the coveted oasis where individuals seek refuge from life’s daily hustle. Yet, amidst the wide plethora of
wellness practices, there's often an underestimated but crucial
consideration to our overall health and confidence – dental self-care. At Plantation Dental SSI, Charles (Chase) T. Hopkins III, DMD encourages his patients to lean into the accessible intersection of lifestyle and dentistry. No longer relegated to the realm of routine, the care of our smiles now intertwines experiences that embrace both necessity and selective refinement. With Dr. Hopkins’ guidance, we’ll explain how beyond the dental chair, every day can become a celebration of your smile and well-being.

EMBRACE HOLISTIC HABITS While it may seem obvious and mundane, brushing and flossing your teeth are especially important to your oral and overall health. Dr. Hopkins explains “The mouth is the gateway to the entire body. Uncontrolled plaque bacteria can multiply and enter the bloodstream, affecting other parts of the body.” Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, respiratory ailments, Alzheimer's disease, and more. As for your smile, bacteria within plaque breaks down the sugars from the food and drink you consume and can turn it into acid, which then eats away at the enamel of your teeth. So, how long should you brush and floss your teeth to help prevent this from occurring? Dr. Hopkins recommends two minutes for each at least twice a day. He also urges people to visit the dentist regularly, at least twice a year for a thorough cleaning and check-up. Carefully managing your oral health is not only self-care, it is self-preservation.
CLEANSE WHILE YOU CHEW Spinach, lettuce, kale, and other leafy greens are excellent choices for your diet and teeth. Not only do these greens have loads of vitamins and minerals your gums and teeth love, they impressively help clean your teeth while eating them! Celery, carrots, and other crunchy vegetables are another great recommendation. “Like the leafy green vegetables, these require lots of chewing before swallowing, which helps clean

reduce bacteria that cause bad breath, and protect your tooth enamel. Drinking two to three liters of water a day will not only make you feel better, but your teeth will look and feel stronger too.
TREAT YOURSELF TO BEAUTIFULLY ALIGNED TEETH A confident smile is one of the most powerful assets a person can have. Plantation Dental proudly offers Reveal Clear Aligners to help patients achieve that desired poise with straightened teeth. Dr. Hopkins says, “Unlike other foggy aligners, Reveal Clear Aligners have a virtually invisible appearance.” The product is made of a special material called ClearWear. It is a BPA-free/phthalate-free plastic and is manufactured through a proprietary process for crystal clear clarity and perfect fit. This means that when you wear them, they blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, making them a discreet orthodontic option. Importantly, patients can rest easy under the care of a licensed dental practitioner and without messy at-home impression kits. Dr. Hopkins and his team use a quick and easy digital scanner to comfortably and accurately begin treatment. Complimentary consultations are offered at the dentistry practice. JANUARY 2024

INDULGE IN A LUMINOUS TRANSFORMATION A bright and radiant smile leaves a lasting impression, but people often struggle to find an effective, safe solution to get the dazzling white teeth they desire. Fortunately, KöR Teeth Whitening is offered at Plantation Dental. The KöR proprietary Whitening System works by restoring your teeth’s youthful ability to absorb oxygen. The oxygen from the whitening gel is absorbed deeply into the tooth, dissolving and removing stain molecules. Dr. Hopkins adds “This is a long-lasting at-home treatment that does not use harsh lights or lasers. It’s gentle, convenient, and brightens teeth 16 shades lighter on average.” Integrating basic hygiene and healthy food and beverage choices with cosmetic interventions provides a balanced and proactive approach to dental care. It promotes both functional health and confidence. And that’s a fine reason to smile! If you’d like help maintaining or enhancing that smile, new patients are welcome at Plantation Dental SSI. WITH IN-SERVICE TRAINING
ospice of the Golden Isles has launched a new initiative to support
the ongoing professional development of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and in Georgia. This
initiative marks a significant milestone in the community nonprofit organization's commitment to fostering excellence in healthcare and enhancing the skills of its dedicated staff.
Hospice of the Golden Isles now offers in-service programs covering various clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual topics. Current in-service programs offered are: Death and Dying, Dyspnea with Advanced Illness, Hospice Care Overview, Hospice Levels of Care, Managing End-of-Life Issues, Nutrition and Fluids for the Dying Individual, Addressing Opioid Anxiety, Pain Management Principles, and Advanced Pain Management Principles. Their credentialed staff present these professional development courses in a setting most convenient to their healthcare partners at their facility or the Hospice of the Golden Isles campus, which results in Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for RNs and LPNs at little or no cost.
“Hospice of the Golden Isles is excited to share our expertise with our community partners through these training modules,” said Paula DiLandro, Executive Director of Hospice of the Golden Isles. “These modules are specifically focused on the most common areas of concern. The goal is to ensure we are collectively providing the highest quality of care to those at the end of life, regardless of the care setting.” In addition to benefiting the organization's nursing staff, this initiative aligns with Hospice of the Golden Isles' broader mission to contribute positively to the overall healthcare landscape within the community. By promoting professional excellence, the organization hopes to set a standard for quality hospice care and inspire others in the healthcare industry to prioritize ongoing education. Hospice of the Golden Isles is a 501(c) 3 community-based, non-profit organization serving patients in Glynn, Camden, McIntosh, Brantley, and Charlton counties and a leading provider of compassionate end-of-life care. Their show features many of the Beatles’ greatest hits, including Twist & Shout, A Hard Day’s Night, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and, of course, Yesterday, played and sung by a cast of experienced and multitalented musicians. One performance only at 7:30 p.m. Get your tickets at goldenislesarts.org.
READY TO ROCK Get your tasting spoons ready! The Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee will return Saturday, January 27 at Mary Ross Waterfront Park. In addition to the fierce competitions between stew teams vying for top honors with judges and people’s choice award, there will be fun for the whole family. The day’s festivities will include a car show, arts & crafts vendors, pooch parade, and live music from Joe King and Dream Team. Come on out between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. so you can join the excitement and cast your votes. For more info and links to register as a vendor, stew team, pooch parade or car show participant, or sponsor, visit brunswickstewbilee.com.
SAVE THE DATE Red, white, rose, brisk, bold, and bubbly, you’ll have the opportunity to sip it all at Taste of the Vine. This signature fundraiser for Coastal Coalition for Children provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy premium wines, culinary delights, and engage in both live and silent auctions, all while supporting the welfare of children in our community. The event will be held at Frederica Golf Club, Sunday, February 18, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Tickets are $125 each and can be purchased on EventBrite. All proceeds benefit The Coastal Coalition for Children’s mission to promote child well-being by giving families the tools they need to create safe, stable and nurturing homes. Sponsorship opportunities also available. For more information, visit cc4children.org/events.

In just one day, we went from breakfast with the Grinch and friends at Golden Isles Olive Oil to the fabulous annual Holiday Market at Lord of Life Lutheran Church and a Holiday Pop-Up Market featuring local artisans at Duke’s Coastal Flooring and Restoration Import’s Carte Blanche Christmas Open House. Cookies and milk with Santa at Bailey Boys finished up the afternoon. And that was just part of the first weekend of holiday festivities! 54

Cottage 342, W. Seventeenth Street, Sea Island A home for large families with two master suites in a brilliant floor plan. Occupying most of the 17th Street block, this prized and revered property extends from Sea Island Drive all the way to the marsh. For families who enjoy staying together, Lune de Miel (Cottage 342) is lovingly placed on the land with the precision of an artist, an apt metaphor given the materials, furnishings and appointments dating from the 17th century. The enchanting grounds contain a moated gazebo with Louis XIII French limestone mantel (circa 1672), alfresco grill, pergola, lap pool, spa pool and volleyball pool, bath house with laundry room, basketball court, chess court, Dovecote (circa 16th-17th century), circular fire pit, putting green, chipping tee box, Bocce Ball court, shuffleboard and long northwesterly marsh vistas. The ground floor wing has a master suite with private office with fireplace. It’s sumptuous bath also enjoys its own fireplace. The upstairs master with fireplace is in its own luxurious world with sitting area, opulent bath, adjoining den with full bath and a 685 square foot library with fireplace. Six other bedrooms have fireplaces and there are two bunks, all ensuite. An Irish pub with baby grand piano has 17th century Roman carved black slate fireplace. The adjoining Game Room has a “Jewel” pool table, hardwood shuffle board table and 3 mounted big screen televisions. The English Victorian pine front bar has the original mahogany counter top (circa 1849) from a tavern in Birmingham, England. The back bar is from Fritzingers Hotel in Coopersburg, PA (circa 1883). Walk-in cooler. Adding to the authenticity of the home’s appointments, a 19th century bronze and ormolu French chandelier adorns the brick lined Wine Cellar. A solid European red oak and hand forged iron door (circa 1850) leads to the Theatre with rare Italian barrel-vaulted ceiling (circa 17th century). The family room limestone fireplace (circa 1600-1750) is from the Chateau Fountain in Sologne, France and belonged to the family of the wife of former French President Jacques Chirac. Indeed, this is a grand residence yet with a warm, comfortable loving ambience. Lune de Miel is the sequel of a couple’s spark of beautiful love where lasting memories were made. $17,995,000
316 Forest Oaks, St. Simons Island Club Perfect island location close to the Village, this stunning, partially furnished, Mediterranean home offers 369 feet of frontage on the 14th and 15th fairways of The Island Club Golf Course. An abundance of architectural details, lots of glass walls, high ceilings, stone and wood floors, 3 fireplaces, 5 large bedrooms and baths, an exercise room, a spectacular wine cellar, an arbored terrace with a fountain, a tile roof and a 3-car garage make this a home you want to live in! HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS
A Civil War Letter from a Son
I
n January 1863, young Robert Couper was far from home. From a military camp near Port Royal, Virginia, Couper wrote to his mother, Caroline Couper of St. Simons Island, to update her on his time in the Confederate military. He likely knew that his mother was anxious to hear from him. When Robert wrote this letter, it had been only six months since his brother, John Lord Couper, had died at Gordonsville, Virginia. Less than a year before that, his eldest brother Hamilton had died at Manassas, Virginia of typhoid. His brothers James and Alexander were also enlisted, leaving parents James Hamilton and Caroline with only letters like these as proof of their sons’ well-being.
Robert wrote to his parents amid a cold, wet Virginia winter. While he wrote that January was “usually the most severe month,” he also assured his family that he was well protected from the cold. “I have a good tent,” he wrote, “and lately I have had a chimney of mud and sticks put up at one end of it; this is far better than sitting by a fire in the open air, where we suffer at the same time from wind, smoke, and cold.” Robert Couper’s service in the area centered around the Hazelwood Farm, a property on the Rappahannock River that had once belonged to John Taylor, a U.S. senator from Virginia. Couper’s regiment placed their headquarters in the ruins of Taylor’s house and soon began picquet (more commonly spelled “picket”) duty along the southern bank of the river. As a picquet, Couper was to prevent the passage of boats in either direction, observe the movements of the enemy, and refrain from engaging the enemy in conversation. Stationed just across the river, about four hundred yards away from Robert’s regiment, Union troops were easy to observe but perhaps more difficult to avoid. One of the most dramatic moments in Couper’s picquet duty came when a major of a North Carolina battalion tried to pilot a boat to visit nearby picquets along the river. Instead, Robert wrote, “the high wind that was blowing drifted them in spite of their efforts to the other bank of the river, where they were at once captured by the enemy.” Couper assured his parents that while the Union may try to cross the Rappahannock, he did not think they would succeed. Robert believed that points on the Confederate side of the river were well-protected, and specifically promised his father that “we have great cause for confidence and encouragement. This letter, along with others from Robert, are in the Wilbur Couper Collection at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Also pictured is a small portrait of Caroline Couper, Robert’s mother.
