HOD’S MESSAGE
“
In the early days of management education, business schools conveniently mirrored the functional architecture of large corporations and thus created the current disciplinary silos of finance, sales, production or personnel management.
In emerging growth engines of world economy today, in countries like China, South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil or India, organizations are striving to find new models for global growth. Many companies from these countries are now seeking new business leadership in manufacturing, services, in high tech businesses as well as in conventional businesses.
Prof. Jayanta Chatterjee Head, Industrial & Management Engineering, IIT Kanpur
It is too early to talk about the new shape of management emerging from their winning new strategies but few important patterns are being noted and high-lighted by press and media, and lately by researchers too. The leaders of these organizations are not merely functional experts but rather fluent like players in a top rated football team, easily moving around to different positions for different attack and defense modes. Flexibility, adaptability, openness to new disciplines and new assignments are highly appreciated in these organizations. In the buzz of activity in such professional organizations there is an over-arching emphasis on innovation, ethics, integrity, communication competence and complementary blend of analytical skills with the ability to synthesize. Young managers in these leading organizations are recognized for their superior negotiations and conflict management abilities, so superior self-management is a prime qualification. The business of today still needs competent marketers, shopfloor managers or accountants but the all pervasive enterprise technology systems enable front-line employees and technicians to rise to these daily challenges quite effectively and they do not necessarily need to be “managed” in their earlier sense of command and control. Thus to be relevant as young manager one needs today to explore competencies that can be learnt but are not entirely teachable in the class room. Institutions like ours, therefore, must put the development of learning ability and action orientation at the core of purpose. The mission that we have set for ourselves is that of making our class room permeable. We not only observe but more and more engage with the society around us. We retail the academic rigor and thoroughness of our discourses for which we are well none but also seek out immersive, experiential learning in the live laboratory around us. Our evolving aim is not to train slideshow warriors but to enable the innate abilities of our graduates to be innovator –managers by grasping the systemic fundamentals and by bridging the ‘knowing-doing’ gap in business and life.
