Greek Culture Patterns to Think and Print Students Works

Γκλίνου Ελένη

The department of Graphic design of TEI Athens (Technological Institute of Athens) is the only Public higher education institution in Greece in this area of studies. The faculty of graphic arts is an integral educational unit and at the same time a vehicle for the dissemination of scientific cultural and social values, functions that are widely acknowledged by the professional educational and artistic media in the country. I worked In this department as a full time professor for 15 years. , I taught theory and the course of visualizing poetry part of which are the presented projects supervised by me and KANELLA ARAPOGLOU, a great graphic designer, artist and cheerful person , I was lucky to work with. This book is dedicated to all the amazing students whom with we shared this wonderful road of creating a book together. I wish them all many meaningful experiences and successes in their professional life. Greek culture patterns to think and print Modern Greek culture’s main theme is its ongoing interaction with its ancient counterpart in both visible and invisible ways. Far from being closed to the new and foreign ideas and practices Greek culture becomes really interesting as it tries to combine classic undercurrents with the waves that emanate from our fast changing cosmos. Being Greek is about understanding the world with a certain way of thinking, of finding yourself in it and act with spontaneity , warmth, open hearted manner towards life. This book is a representative collection of the works of 5th semester students of TEI Athens* and were created in the years 2012 -2014. This work is inspired by the theme of ancient Greek monsters as they are coming in a variety of beings related with different ancient Greek myths. The students were given a band new theme to work with. Then , they had to look for their favorite myth , choose a monster out of it, analyze it’s characteristics connect with it and write a very small poem about it. Then this monster, drawing by drawing became an abstract form that was used to create patterns with different applications in printing mostly for fabrics. . Students had to employ different skills in this project such as creating an in-depth experience with the aspects that their chosen monsters reflected in relation to their personality. Then they had to read and discover contemporary recognitions and similarities of the monsters with the present emotional, political, social and cultural stereotypes (process of the poem writing). The next stage was to decide how to turn their drawings to an abstract form that represents their research the best in contemporary visual language. To continue into their pattern creation was a very challenging process that took a lot of hours of tests and trials. The main difficulty here is inventing the pattern as what in the beginning as a single abstract form was very strong, when multiplied was becoming week and indifferent. This demanding process is manifested here as students in their second year of studies had to resolve many design problems. Pattern creation might be very popular but also very demanding depending on the patterns that will be used. Doing silkscreen printing in a space out of TEI facilities with a group of so many students was a great experience with lots of fun but also very hard work in small groups . The purpose of this project was to familiarize students with the steps from creation to production; Understand the rich Greek culture identities, derive inspiration from this area and to see the potential of design applications and branding. It is my belief that this orientation will open creative forces that if married with market demand will lead to a strategy for the exit of the country from the miseries of its economic decline.

This project was exhibited at the GDA of Greece in February 2013.
