Cindy Ambuehl is arguably L.A.’s most sought-after real estate professional, consistently ranking as a top producer in one of the world’s most competitive luxury markets while retaining the trust of the area’s savviest home buyers, sellers, and fellow agents. A familiar face who spent 20 years in the entertainment industry as a prominent actress and model, Cindy now leverages her natural ability to connect with people—not to mention her impressive capacity for negotiation and executing mutually rewarding business deals—as a full-time agent, helping clients buy and sell the most luxurious properties the greater Los Angeles area has to offer. What continues to set her apart is her unwavering work ethic, along with her tenacity and drive. In the early days of Cindy’s real estate career, when the real estate industry was at one of the lowest points in recent memory, she still managed to rank among the top 1% of real estate professionals nationwide — and she’s only gained momentum since. In 2017, she ranked #20 in California and #40 in the nation as measured by sales volume, closing almost $160 million in sales that year alone. Named one of Hollywood’s Top 30 Real Estate Agents by The Hollywood Reporter and recognized by Variety as one of the “Showbiz Real Estate Elite,” Cindy repeatedly earns a spot . 43

of the leaders of that very powerful market, what were you feeling in watching that evolve, you being you? CA: Nobody likes uncertainty, and the world that we live in here in LA, is filled with a lot of extremely successful people, and they are the movers and shakers of most industries, and they are here in LA. For them to put a lot of things on pause and hold because of the uncertainty, really spoke volumes and needed to be heard. So what I felt from the very beginning when this all happened was I need to

to start to start listening to every podcast, I need to know how to best advise my clients. It’s such an uncharted territory, and how really to listen to them because unfortunately...we’re seeing people come from a place of fear, and nothing good comes from acting from a place of fear, and so it was really important from the very beginning to just try and listen. When people come from a place of fear, they want to be heard. They don’t just want to necessarily want to be told that “everything is going to be fine, let’s go buy a house, etc.” No, they want to be asked “what are

you afraid of?” What are your biggest fears? What are your concerns? How can we create a solution as opposed to dwelling on this problem, what solution can I help you facilitate?” These are conversations I’ve been having with clients morning, noon, and night. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were probably the hardest days of my entire professional career. Buyers were backing out right and left from all price points, $3 million to $15 million, fear based. And also, when you have a “town” of movers and shakers, a town of professionals who are used to 49

being in control, whether it be studio heads, investors, tech people, whomever, they are used to being in control. Captains of their industry. Suddenly, everything’s out of their control. There are things they don’t have answers or remedies to, and that’s what’s creating so much of the fear. It’s almost like an earthquake out here, it’s not just the shake, the shake’s not what bothers us, it’s the unknown of how bad is this shake going to be. I’ve lived here in California my whole life, and it’s never about the shake itself, we all stay standing during the shake, it’s that fear during those few minutes of “oh my God, how bad is this going to be, and what’s going to be the consequence at the end of it?” And we’re still shaking right now, that’s the volatile point where we are right now, we’re in a shake. RG: So staying in that scene so to speak, it’s still shaking, and not only is it still shaking, it’s definitely not in anyway in control, and you yourself, you’re a captain of industry, speaking to these other captains of industry, and you’re typically in control of your industry, I would think with respect to your fear-based analogy and spot on comment, I think what makes it even more frightening is no one knows exactly what ultimately is going to be broken and thus who exactly is going to be fixing what, while still staying proactive and how can we engage with and help our clients. CA: Right, and not only how’s it going to be fixed, but it’s still so unknown right now, whose really going to be hit the hardest, as far as the clients? 51

The one buying the $15 million house, are they unscathed because they pulled stocks out at a high at the onset of this, they held, and now they’re going to buy [a home] at a low, they’re actually making money from this. Or are they the ones that have 20, 30, 40 employees that they’re now having to take care of, and wanting to take care of, and now they’re not in a position to buy. You don’t know the impact yet. We’re all in this at different levels, but we’re all in this. So we really don’t know what the outcomes going to be or how to help and I think it’s a case by case basis. Everyone is sacrificing so much, the fact that these small business owners are closing these restaurants or closing bars or closing shops, these people live on a week to week income and they depend on consumers coming in and they’re closing their doors and they’re doing it in the hope of stopping this virus, slowing down the spread of this virus, and it’s a very responsible, wonderful thing that they’re doing and we just hope in the end that they’re going to be in a position, hopefully the banks will lend at a lower interest rate and give people the opportunity to refinance at a lower price per month to help them while they recoup. I think that’s what’s happening, I hope that continues to happen. We all have to help and work together. RG: In regards to the comment you made on the service industry, whether it be in Los Angeles or South Beach, Miami, it’s all so tied together. Those thousands upon thousands of workers that live week to week, so that’s gone, and then you have rent being waived 54

for a month at least initially, which then hits landlords, and down the line, so… CA: Listen, we had one buyer in an escrow earlier this week wanting to back out and they were saying it’s due to the devastation of the corona virus, and in fact they in this particular situation have not been devastated by the corona virus, and they were taking advantage of the situation because they’d had second thoughts about the house prior so they’re using it and I find that really distasteful. They’re are people really struggling and those people absolutely need help and they need forgiveness, and if that forgiveness means that they can’t pay their bills then we need to help them. It’s a challenging situation and we just hope everyone steps up to their responsibility. We all have a responsibility to one another and it’s the same thing with here in real estate, we’re all in contracts together, and we have responsibilities to one another as per contracts. So everyone has to act in good faith, we’re guiding our clients that way, we’re asking them to please practice good business, good faith practices, good negotiation, fair negotiation, and just understand that the person on the other side may really be going through a hard time and we have to be sensitive to it. RG: You being you, still with so many unknowns, a master strategist, are you at a point where you can begin to even initially formulate post whatever this initial corona virus element might be? Both personally and professionally.

55

CA: We also want our kids to learn responsibility with this, so we’re also teaching them to be aware. Be aware of spending. Be aware of their social interactions. Be aware of your kindness towards others through this. At the end of it, and we will get through this and we will get through this together, I hope that we keep some of these practices with us. I think we all need to take a lesson on this and slow down. There’s a lot to be said about being forced to slow down and putting your phones away and computers away, and talk and share and watch a movie together. I think that outside of the financial part of it, the human part of it is important and it’s about taking some of these lessons and making sure we carry them with us. With our clients, it’s helping them, what can we do to help you? Do you want us to help you refinance, we know lenders? All we can be is a resource and be there to let them to know that. We call our clients everyday during this, we call them everyday. Calling them and checking in. We’re not up selling them, we’re calling them to ask how can we be of service to you, what can we help answer, that’s where we come from. My team has daily tasks and the task I gave them this morning was to reach out to a minimum of eight clients today to see how they are, to see what we can do to help them, do not up sell them, instead encourage them and be an advisor. It’s just humanizing it. It shouldn’t be that hard, right?

SILO RIDGE Discovery Land Company Opens Design Center in Amenia

Photography by Sarah Elliott

Silo Ridge Field Club, Discovery Land Company’s first Northeast property and the only gated community in the Hudson Valley, has opened a Design Center for members to work with in-house designers to plan and build custom luxury homes. Situated minutes away from Silo, the Design Center is housed in a former United Presbyterian historic church, originally founded in 1864, and features a Tiffany stained glass to honor Amenian residents who fought in the Civil War as well as an original church bell. Discovery Land Company saved the church from being demolished and has completely restored the exterior of the church, preserving

historic elements and renovated the interior. Restoring the beloved church is yet another example of its commitment to local preservation and community. The design of Silo Ridge homes is completely custom, beautiful and impeccable, with no two homes the same. They do share in common sweeping mountain views that capture the changing seasons, as all homes border a private 220acre preserve, so seemingly endless trails and adventures are right outside your door. The Design Center’s open-air environment allows for homeowners to design their home in one stop, all in one beautiful place. Homeowners see draftsmen and balcony, working with them at large tables to create storyboards that bring their vision of a perfect home to life. Homeowners work with Discovery Design as they choose flooring, cabinetry, colors, finishes, textures and textiles with samples provided to see and touch what will be in their home. Once those decisions have been made, Discovery Design does it all for the homeowner, sourcing best-in-class materials throughout. Discovery Land Company believes that building your dream home should be as enjoyable as living in it. They have even created an area where children can play – a mini-Comfort Station that mirrors the ones at Silo Ridge, replete with gourmet snacks and activities. Discovery’s focus for the 245 residences at Silo, reflects the beauty of the Hudson Valley, with re

claimed barn wood and local stone as leading design elements. The Farmhouse and new modern barn flair style homes feature those elements in addition to massive glass windows to connect homeowners to the outdoors. Beyond the glass are expansive decks, which can be outfitted with a wood oven for pizza, full kitchen and bar among other options, looking out over the 18-hole championship golf course. Silo Ridge Field Club is located 90 minutes from the city, accessible by car or a one- stop train, the private property is nestled amongst the top private schools in the country. Discovery Land Company is a US-based real estate developer and operator of private residential club communities and resorts with a world-renowned portfolio of domestic and international properties. Every community features unparalleled amenities and inspired experiences that cater to a family-oriented lifestyle. EIGHTY SEVEN PARK

Renzo Piano’s First Residential Project in the Western Hemisphere

Eighty Seven Park, prize-winning architect Renzo Piano’s first residential project in the Western Hemisphere, has opened in North Beach. Developed by Terra in partnership with Bizzi & Partners Development, the beachfront building’s cantilevered architecture creates an illusion that Eighty Seven Park is suspended to effortlessly float above the ocean and lush parkland. Created in close collaboration with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, RDAI in Paris, and West 8 in Rotterdam, the project’s fluid design blurs the line between imagination and craftsmanship.

“Seeing our vision come to life and the new energy that Eighty Seven Park has brought to the neighborhood is thrilling,” said Terra President David Martin. “We have always strived to construct projects that will have a positive impact on their surroundings and, by extension, the people who live there. Eighty Seven Park is no exception. What Renzo Piano Building Workshop created here is something that I think is a landmark for this last portion of Miami Beach and really gives a lot of dignity and pride to the community.”

residences ranging in size from one to five bedrooms, spanning 1,400 to 7,000 square feet plus a penthouse, each unit at Eighty Seven Park offers expansive floor plans, outdoor wrap-around terraces equal to 50-70% of the interior space, and floor-to-ceiling windows with custom sunken frames that minimize the sense of interior and exterior. Bookended by a 35acre public park to the south and a 2-acre private residents’ park to the north, Eighty Seven Park offers unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean and Miami skyline.

for Eighty Seven Park is the language of lightness, a sense of a lack of gravity. When I look at how the glass and suspended decks of the building appear to float, and how they catch the sun and the light of the ocean, it’s fantastic,” said Renzo Piano. “Craftsmanship is one of the essential qualities of architecture and we went back to this tradition to bring this building to life. The quality of architecture is about poetry and beauty but it’s also about detail

and perfection.” With design inspired by the natural surroundings of North Beach, materials collected from the location site, pebbles, shells, leaves and sea grass are highlighted throughout the building and residences. Light oak flooring mimics the color palette of aged sea grape leaves, the Venetian terrazzo floors echo the tranquility of Miami’s white sandy beaches, and crystal clear walls of glass lend beauty and elegance to the residences. Stone flooring and

ample planting, visually and materially, tie the ground floor lobby with the garden, pools, and park. “The palette created for this project was inspired by the surrounding natural elements of North Beach,” said Denis Montel of RDAI. “Capitalizing on the architectural vision of Renzo Piano Building Workshop, we wanted owners of this building to feel that they are one with nature from their first step inside.”

Eighty Seven Park’s world-class amenities include an around-theclock global concierge and butler service, on-staff botanist, Enoteca wine bar with sommelier and wine storage, a carefully curated TASCHEN library, two swimming pools featuring a series of cabanas, a Fugo Bar serving freshly made juices, smoothies and salads, a state-of-the-art gym, relaxation spa with Hammam, sauna and steam rooms, as well as valet services. A 2-acre residents-only private park features terraces, gardens, lounges, and sculptures, as well as a pavilion for cultural

and social occasions including yoga on the beach and meditation areas. Celebrated Dutch firm West 8 was enlisted to design the project’s landscape architecture which includes a series of private, public, and semi-public spaces that seamlessly embrace the natural surroundings and South Florida’s lush tropical landscape. West 8 meticulously designed both the oceanfront private residents park and the city’s public North Shore Open Space Park that is being revitalized for the community to enjoy.

25 Years Of Magic

Christopher Martin

The year was 1993 when Chris Martin found his tiny space in a 1950’s building in Dallas. He chose to show his own paintings, curating and carefully controling the experience his buyers would have with his work. Now after twenty five years of tapping into the “magical realm” in his creative process, we have asked him to reflect on his career, and give us a glimpse of what the future holds. Q; In twentyfive years of being in the artworld, what whould you say was one of your biggest “aha” moments? A; My most powerful “aha” moment happened twenty years ago when my whife Stacy and I got married. It was just the two of usand the Reverend with our feet in the surf of Barbados. Who you choose to spend your life with is in my opinion the biggest decision one can make. It takes a while to realize the signifigance when you are young, but twenty years later the impact is undeniable. Q; What was one the the most powerful moments in which you learned from what you might call a mistake? A; When I realize a mistake in my work it usually comes from a lack of focus or distraction. Iknow when it happens immediately. If I don’t trash the peice all together, I look for the oppertunity in it. How can I lean in to the mistake to find the unexpected turn it maybe presenting? Possibly taking the painting in a different direction than my initial intention. In my experience, life is often the same. When you 97

98

realize the mistake, look to find A; I would make sure that my the meaning in it. Is it really a young self knew how challenging it mistake or just an alternative to would be to span the decades as an artist. There will be moments of your expectation? flow and ease, feeling like you are Q; ClichĂŠ question: What would bullet proof, followed by times of you say to yourself now at that mo- doubt, loneliness and indecision. ment you were starting out with There will be failure, signifigant your dream, your passion, your mistakes and miscalculations. inspiration twentyfive years ago, Many times you will overestimate not knowingthe road ahead? your abilities, and take risks that

are disproportionate to the reward. Learn to rest and not quit, make an alley of your instincts. Find your anti depressants in the studio and not at the pharmacy. After being asked by a young artist, I wrote a list of things to consider about choosing art as a career. 1 - The process of making art can be physically demanding, lonely and psychologically exhausting.

2 - You set your own standard of what art is. Your work is never done, you could always spend more time in the studio and less time doing anything else. 3 - You cannot count on a paycheck. You invest most of what you make to make more work. 4 - No matter what you do someone will say it is derivative of someone eles’s work and they will

be right. 5 - You will want to quit many times and find it hard to start many days. 6 - You will always feel you’re only as good as the last peice you created. 7 - You will always feel that you have to live life as an artist and options other than that will never be fully considered. That being said,

living the life of an artist is an amazing way to live. The joy and satisfaction of creating something you and others feel better after being next to is rare air and worth every bit of the conflict that comes along with it. Q; Has your inspiration changed significantly since when you first began twentyfive years ago ? 99

10o

My inspiration has been consistent, to create paintings based on organic patterns with a painterly expression, I like to refer to my work as Organic Expressionism. Finding a balance in the painting is the intention I set for my work. Sometimes I feel that this focus has been too narrow, but then I review the last 25 years and fnd the linage these works all share, the i

paintings, when the idea and execution come together that furthers your vision and rewards your commitment. These paintings are the fuel I use to move to the next place, they give me the mental break, the Q: What piece or pieces over the respite from the creative process past 25 years have been the most that I need to pursue the next body of work. Armira, Fortuna, Zeven, meaningful to you and why? Kesho, Pandora, Wicked Garden A: Several, they are all Basecamp and Pantheon have all given me incremental steps in order to get where I am now ad feel that I have created a visual vocabulary that is uniquely mine, which I find tremendously satisfying.

the energy and encouragement to keep painting. I am so appreciative to have had them in my life. Q: What pieces have been the most lucratie and why? A: Fortuna, without a question, painted in 2017 with broad strokes of vibrant color and a very positive vibratio. It started a series that has lead to some amazing paintings that have been shipped all over the world. I also created a limited edition of that piece that has only a few editions left. Q: Now having succeed, grown with your accomplishments at an ever accelerated pace, as you look ahead 5, 10, the next 25 years, what are our next mileston goals? A: I’m not one ot set goals, I believe that they are limiting and tend to put blinders on that obscure opportunities. We live in such a goal-oriented world and to operate without them seems counterintutive. Staying healthy, working hard, being a good husband and father are the objectiives or principals that I try to stay true to; by doing so it allows good to flow in my life that I hope is apparent in my art. Q: Why did you choose the pieces you did for this feature? A; I selected some of the basecamp paintings. These are examples of my work that started entire serises, coming together in a way that creates a sense of accomplishment and mastery. These types of paintings feel like artistic gifts, keeping me creatively inspired. 103

RG: We’re always looking to evolve the brand in the most organic fashion. This seemed like the natural next step. RICHARD: It took 700 samples to perfect Casamigos Tequila. What was the process like to refine the mixers and salts to be a perfect fit to Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal? RG: We collaborated, perfected and tasted every mix and salt to make sure it was what we wanted before we bottled it. RICHARD: How did you select the flavor and taste profiles for the mixers and salts? RG: We wanted to create a flavor profile that everyone could enjoy. The line launched with signature cocktail flavors including a margarita, paloma, blackberry basil smash and ginger mule. Each mix is special because they’re handcrafted in small batches and inspired by cocktails we’ve curated ourselves. Our new flavors feature a cucumber chile mix and pineapple smoke mix that are great for spring and summer. RICHARD: What inspired your design for the Casamigos-branded barware? RG: Design is very personal for me. I wanted to create a line of glassware and bar tools that I would want to use and feel good in your Photo Courtesy of Casamigos

RG: We have people drinking Casamigos that never drank tequila before as well as customers that switched from vodka and other types of liquor and are now fans of Casamigos. They love and appreciate the authenticity and quality of our brand. The fact that we are the fastest growing ultra-premium tequila in the country is based on the quality, taste, smoothness and numerous awards we have received from tequila experts who all want and appreciate the best. RICHARD: What makes Casamigos different from all other brands?

RG: We made Casamigos for us to drink and don’t follow any rules or look at other brands. We do everything in house and do things our own way. RICHARD: What’s next for the brand? RG: We are always thinking ahead and have some ideas in the works to expand our brand. We are really proud of what we have done and are focused on the continued growth of our Tequila and Mezcal. RICHARD: When hosting, what are your tips on gifting? How can you make your gifts memorable? RG: Have a gift for all your guests, wrap them nicely and include a personal note. Gifts you give should always be something someone wants or needs. The Casamigos x Williams Sonoma cocktail mixes and salts make the perfect gift. RICHARD: The Williams Sonoma collaboration makes it easy for anyone to be their own bartender at home. Which Williams Sonoma x Casamigos products will you be using on repeat? RG: All of them!

ANDREW McDONALD Magic In The Making

From Orange County, CA to Orange County, FL

The Magic Touch When the Italian design powerhouse, Pininfarina of Ferrari fame, partnered with Magic Development and hotel giant, Wyndham – the largest hotel franchise in the world, in order to create tourist luxury properties bordering Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, they weren’t thinking about Andrew McDonald, real estate entrepreneur in Orange County, California. They didn’t know him, but were seeking another magic touch for their next world class development.

What they were creating, in this #1 tourist destination in the world, is a residential complex which sets the bar in designer vacation sophistication, complimenting their dramatic show piece, Magic Place, a planned state-of-the-art multi-use vacation village. Magic Village by Pininfarina, and its nearly 800 luxury condominiums, will be part of the ambitious development sitting on over 460 acres of land with almost 1-mile of frontage on the 192 Freeway. The epic project, which bears the Disney Corporation “Stamp”, consists of Two hotels, twentytwo

restaurants, a gourmet market, retail stores, long-term residential buildings and plans for a convention center. The residential concept was phenomenal, the market was ripe, but the sales machine was left over from the previous international focus -- used on their first two successful residential developments. Enter McDonald, of Pacific Sotheby’s in Laguna Beach, CA. “They had used a global shotgun

approach primarily aimed at South American and Asian tourists and investors. It was highly effective in selling out both earlier phases of Magic Development. Their third and pinnacle project, Magic Village by Pininfarina, called for an adjustment in marketing -- a laser sharp plan to target domestic investment-oriented tourists. And that involved aligning with a powerful and exclusive, sales and marketing partner.” You might say it was a case of “the right place at the right time”, except Andrew was 3,000

miles away.

he worked with Magic’s head of North American Sales to craft a deal. Negotiating that “win-win” and the framework formula proved to be a complicated task. Once all had been flushed out, the group he had brought to the table discovered their lack of “bandwidth” to deliver on the terms. Fortunately, Andrew’s eggs were not all in one basket.

At this point in his career, however, he is poised and eager to be in that right place, at any time. “I’ve been creating a network of trusted real estate professionals and investors for over two decades now, with the goal of having a profound impact in the business. My focus became that of elevating Orange County real estate on a global level. And collaboration has been my chosen “Prior to my move to Sotheby’s, I method of operation. THE ABACO CLUB Owning an Island Home in Paradise

There are a handful of places in this world so astoundingly peaceful and beautiful, you never want to leave. This is one of them. The Abaco Club on Winding Bay was created to be a rare kind of community: a tropical paradise where club members, homeowners, and visitors can escape the rigors of everyday life and relax, recreate, and rejuvenate in a setting so beautiful as to defy description. A true sporting club, The Abaco Club offers a world of wonders including the #1 golf course in the Bahamas, a spa and fitness facility, water sports, tennis courts, gourmet dining, and the club’s crown jewel—an incomprehensibly beautiful, 2-mile, powder-soft beach that serves as the gateway to the tranquil waters of Winding Bay. In the surrounding waters, club members and guests can avail themselves of the area’s world-famous saltwater flats fishing, thrilling deep-sea fishing, and the serene boating and sailing waters of the Sea of Abaco. For members, the club is a place to return to again and again—for walks on the beach, golf events, soothing spa treatments, and lazy days spent under the warm Bahamian sun. For homeowners, it’s all these things plus the opportunity to own a personal residence on one of the most beautiful island properties in existence. In short, the Abaco Club is a quiet refuge from the world, where families come together, friendships are made, good times are enjoyed, and a lifetime of memories is created. The only thing better than having the opportunity to visit The Abaco Club is owning a residence here.

It happens all the time. People visit The Abaco Club, dip their toes in the clear, turquoise water, or relax by the pool as the soft Bahamian breezes escort the sun across the sky, and decide in an instant that they never want to leave. Or they vow to return— again and again. With your own private residence at the Club, it’s easily done. Bahamian vacation homes at The Abaco Club come in several shapes and sizes, ranging from cozy cabanas and charming cottages to stately villas and grand oceanfront estates. Homeowners may, if they wish, place their home in a rental program for Members and guests of The Abaco Club. The opportunity to own property at the Club and make Abaco your island home-away-from-home is here today—so that you can enjoy a future filled with unforgettable tomorrows. The Estate Homes With an Abaco Club Estate Home, if you can imagine it, you can have it. It’s your tropical dream home, set on the private lot of your choosing, with the view you’ve always wanted to see from your terrace or window, and unlike anything you’ll find with any other Bahamian or Caribbean real estate. Its design reflects your preferences, your taste, and your lifestyle. This is the backdrop for the beautiful future that you envision for yourself, for your family, and for your friends—a future filled with wonder and endless opportunities to make lifelong memories. The club has a limited number of beachfront, Atlantic, and golf course lots available for sale (some with up to 200’ of beach or

or ocean frontage). Most of these spectacular Caribbean real estate lots are over an acre in size, providing ample room for your architectural vision to be realized. Owners may, if they wish, put their home in the club-managed rental program, which provides many benefits, ranging from rental revenue to property tax abatements. Your island home awaits—and it’s no fantasy. Simply Exceptional Oceanfront Cottages Each of The Abaco Club’s colorful two, three, and four-bedroom island cottages beautifully reflect the quiet grace of its surroundings. These turnkey Caribbean homes offer ocean or beach/bay views that are almost too magnificent to be real. Inspired by traditional Bahamian architecture and with floor plans ranging in size from 2,200-3,000 square feet, the Cottages offer features and finishes that exude quality—including expansive decks and sunny outdoor spaces where you can stretch out and make the most of your time in the tropics. All of the Cottages are conveniently located on the property’s “Upper Ridge” area just a short walk to the Spa, Fitness Center, Pool, and Cliff House Restaurant. There are four unique cottage designs to choose from – North Ridge, Oceanview, Reef, and Clearview. Each Cottage floor plan offers an array of customizable features, design options, and turnkey furnishing packages to choose from, ensuring that your cottage is the island beach home of your dreams. What’s more, Cottage owners also have the option to put their home in the

club-managed rental program, which provides a number of benefits, ranging from rental revenue to property tax abatements. Luxury Flats - Inspired Island Living With A View Simplicity and elegance—that’s what island life is all about when you own one of The Abaco Club’s planned Luxury Flats, where stepping into the good life will be easy as stepping through your front door. Each 2-, 3- or 4-bedroom flat will offer an open-concept floor plan that’s luxurious, comfortable and inviting. And each will be meticulously crafted with a long list of wonderful features and finishes throughout. From the veranda of your Luxury Flat at The Abaco Club, you’ll enjoy views so dramatic they have to be seen to be believed. The Bay House, Parrot House and Beach Club residences will be sited just steps from the beach and offer 180-degree views of Winding Bay and its charming inlet, Sugar Cay. The Coral House will overlook the acclaimed golf course’s signature 18th hole and churning Atlantic. Whichever you choose, you’ll enjoy from 2700 to 3200 square feet of unforgettable island luxury. The Cabanas - Like a Suite, Only Sweeter The perfect low-maintenance alternative to an expansive Bahamas beach house, The Abaco Club’s Cabanas are delightful, cozy, and affordable 1-bedroom residences nestled amidst lush tropical foliage along the first fairway, adjacent to the more than two miles of powder-soft Beach fringed by

the turquoise waters of Winding Bay. These freestanding, octagonal Cabanas come fully furnished and offer a spacious living area, beautifully tiled bathroom, king-size four-poster bed, and expansive screened-in porch. In addition to being a great place to stay when visiting The Club, The Cabanas also make an ideal guest house for any Cottage or Estate Home owners who wish to host visiting family or friends in a Bahamas beach home. If they wish, owners may put their Cabana home in the club-managed rental program, which provides many benefits, ranging from rental revenue to property tax abatements.

CASA TUA A Home Away From Home With Miky Grendene Written by Richard Gerding

From Aspen to Miami, Miky Grendene is the ultimate tastemaker, creating intimate, delicious experiences. He first opened Casa Tua in Miami Beach, and has opened Casa Tua Cucina in Miami’s Brickell City Centre along with Casa Tua in Aspen. Since 2001, Miky and his wife Leticia have cultivated and brought the luxurious dining experience to life with their love of food, family, and art in an unparalleled way that is not to be missed and is celebrated by all fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to enjoy any of their famed locations. Richard Gerding: What is the Casa Tua lifestyle? Miky Grendene: Good living. Each one of us is different, but my vision is centered around ‘less is more.’ Keep it simple, give back, and enjoy every detail - the small details make a big difference. For me, lifestyle is remembering to laugh a lot and approach everything with a smile. You need to be able to make fun of yourself, be light, be happy, be soulful. It’s also about embracing nature and protecting it. We try to make a difference and create awareness. Everything I do with Casa Tua is aimed towards reminding people to enjoy life. RG: What inspired Casa Tua’s “home away from home” model? And how are you able to achieve this for guests? MG: I am a host by nature. My wife Leticia and I have always loved to have our home filled with friends laughing, eating and creating memories together. When we moved to Miami over 20 years ago, Photo By Rafael Balcazar

we wanted to build an extension of our own home - and that is how Casa Tua was born. The building itself is a historic Miami Beach house so there’s an inherent level of intimacy built into the space. Paired with good food, familiar service and privacy, we were lucky enough to develop a place with soul. It is the soul that keeps people coming back. RG: In addition to your second outpost in Aspen, you have a third location in Miami – Casa Tua Cucina, a gourmet Italian and Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and marketplace in Saks Fifth Avenue Brickell City Centre. What was your inspiration for this? MG: I have an intense passion for food and love sharing that with everyone. I have always believed the kitchen has soul, it’s the heart of a home – it’s where families share, cook, eat and laugh together. I wanted to recreate this experience on a larger scale, for people to be able to see how we work and how we prepare our food. We believe that sharing good, ethically sourced food is one of the highest expressions of love. At Casa Tua Cucina we want our guests to feel like they are enjoying a meal at home, so we created an environment of sharing, a place where you can enjoy food and drinks with family, friends and co-workers on a daily-basis. There are 10 gourmet dining stations, with chefs preparing everything from handmade pasta to fresh salads and hamachi right in front of you. Each station offers A distinct product and specializes in different ingredients, allowing us to serve a better quality meal to our guests.

ANDIE OHDE Like Nothing On Earth Written by Richard Gerding

From white sandy beaches to crisp mountain air, every resort destination has its own alluring essence that captivates people from around the globe. Coined “like nothing on earth”, Vail is no exception. For decades, visitors have flocked to this slice of paradise to escape the busyness of life and experience the relaxed vibe of this mountain town. Ask any longtime local and they will tell you, “I came for the winters, but I stayed for the summers”. It’s still breath-taking to me after 36 years” Andie Ohde exclaims. It seems only natural that Andie’s path would carry her to the real estate industry as she has a rich family history in the business. Her father, a renowned real estate speaker and author, would often bring his little protégé along with him when touring homes, assisting in remodels, and entrusted her to sell his best-selling books and cassette tapes at CAR and NAR conferences across the country. “It empowered me to have him believe in the natural salesperson inside of me. He knew that I loved to sell his products especially since I saw how enthusiastic and engaged the audience was with him. This was back in the 70’s where most of the realtor’s were women, and they loved that my dad had his 15-yearold daughter working with him side by side. My dad taught me early on that women have great value and power to go out and do anything that they set their mind to”. Today, Andie brings that same passion, in-depth knowledge and marketing expertise to every detail of her career. Andie’s background is rooted

firmly in the real estate realm, having started in Real Estate Sales she then, after eight years, transitioned into the Title Insurance industry. “I was recruited at an opportune time to expand my knowledge and experience. I still kept my real estate license active to keep up with the market and continuing education so I could relate closely to my broker clients.” Andie also partnered up with a short sale facilitation company prior to the Recession as she felt there was going to be a shift in the market. She coordinated several conferences for the brokerage community with a panel of experts to help prepare and navigate through, what she felt would be a soon changing selling and buying environment. She was correct, the Vail Valley, like most areas of the US, felt the brunt of a Recession. The brokers that were once her colleagues were now her clients, and the trust that she built with them in the Title industry and short sale facilitation company has proven to be very fruitful for her current and past clients. With over 36 years in the Vail Valley, she has garnered a sphere of trusted resources including bankers, lenders, brokers, stagers and world-class photographers to deliver a seamless, full-service experience with maximum return and minimum bother. “I consistently have friends and clients alike that call me asking questions about my resources and opinions. I am not only their real estate advisor, but their life advisor, it really makes me feel good to help others”.

the town’s equivalent to a secret menu. The summers come and go quickly in this “playground of the Rockies”, but there is something for everyone here… Hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip lining, horseback riding, camping, rock climbing, golfing, outdoor symphonies and concerts, drive-in movies, and world-renowned food and wine festivals. But the heartbeat behind this amazing place is the community that serves it. One of Andie’s passions is to bring that lifestyle and community to life through social media and her YouTube channel. Over the years, she has interviewed local businesses, change-makers, and local museums to spotlight the true warmth of the community. Her out-of-town clients tell her they love getting to know the local community before ever looking at a potential new home.

Right now, the world is experiencing a disruption to normal life. This disruption has caused us all to slow down and consider our priorities in a different way. Normally during this time of year, our town would be buzzing with Spring Break tourists and the locals would be reveling in warmer temps and Spring skiing before the mountain closes. This year is a bit different. “The town is calm and quiet; reminiscent of when I first moved here over 30 years ago”. Local residents are uniting in every neighborhood to help in whatever way they can. Our community is rallying togethVail may be best known for skiing er in an amazing way by coming its legendary back bowls and pic- up with creative ideas to not only turesque European inspired vil- support our small business ownlage, but the summer activities are ers, but to give back to those on

the front lines at the same time. When this is all over and we adjust back to “normal life”, the community will still be the bedrock of this special mountain town. Real estate in resort towns is a particularly unique segment of the marketplace. Those who choose to purchase a home in a destination town do so for one reason – to have a place to escape to. A place to leave behind their day-to-day

and experience a soulful respite. I don’t see this changing anytime soon. In the last few weeks, two of my clients have continued their initial plan to put their properties on the market resulting in interest. “We’ve experienced a low inventory trend in the Vail Valley for the past six months, so buyers who were already in the market and ready to make a move are still

active in our market right now”. As a broker, “I am adapting to the current environment by emphasizing the technology in the palm of our hands. Whether it’s hosting virtual open houses on Facebook and Instagram Live, doing Face time showings or utilizing 3D Matterport technology, I will do everything I can to safely meet the needs of my clients during this time. For my own personal

development, our industry has been fantastic at hosting virtual mastermind meetings, sales meetings and business groups to offer support and to share what is happening in other parts of the country and world. At the end of the day, Andie lives and breathes the lifestyle and community that is the Vail Valley, and she loves sharing it with others. During this unprecedented

time, we may need to keep our social distance from one another, but we should never turn our backs. “For my clients who continue to have real estate needs right now, I am firmly grounded in my commitment to you and will do everything I can to meet your needs while placing safety and health first. Remember, it may be stormy now, but it never rains forever.

LANA RADEMAKER

Focus & A Resilient Mindset in the Bahamas Written by Richard Gerding

Lana Rademaker is co-owner and Chief Brokerage Officer for Damiano’s Sotheby’s International Realty and Lyford Cay Sotheby’s International Realty in Nassau, The Bahamas. Damiano’s Sotheby’s International Realty was established in 1945 by Lana’s grandfather, Nick Damiano’s, and is now a third-generation, family-owned business. Since joining the family company in 2002 as an estate agent, Lana has firmly established a reputation as a trusted adviser with a strong commitment to the highest level of professional service and who provides undivided attention to her clients and her team. When Lana Rademaker launched her real estate career in 2002, she was one of four women working for Damiano’s Sotheby’s International Realty, and one of those was her mom and co-owner of the company, Virginia Damiano’s. Eighteen years later, Rademaker is now Chief Brokerage Officer for the firm, owns half of the company (Rademaker stepped into her mother’s role after Virginia passed in 2014), and oversees 33 agents, 16 of whom are women. “The number of female agents in our company has increased significantly in the past five-and-a-half years, and there’s this kind of unspoken competitiveness among them,” Rademaker said. “They’re from all different backgrounds and each has a unique focus on their success and are invested in their path. They’re not here to look pretty and be accessories. I enjoy watching them become power agents in the firm and establishing their presence in the business community.” Rademaker attributes this increase in the number of women agents to the company’s culture which encourages support of one another and professional development along with the day-to-day face time every team member receives from her. “We have a holistic approach to teamwork and the agents work directly and closely with me and our leadership team,” Rademaker said. “The relationships we have are transparent and offer a constant support system through coaching, mentoring and a peer-based accountability program.” It’s the same support that Rademaker herself received from her mother, Virginia, who took over the family business in 1995 along with her brother after their father passed away. “My mom was the best mentor I could have asked for and the epitome of what it means to be a Power Woman long before anybody recognized women in this way,” Rademaker said. “She genuinely cared for those around her and had an interest in making them the best version of themselves. Her smile could light up a room and people just felt that energy flowing from her. I try to embody that.” Rademaker is quick to point out that her uncle and business partner, George Damiano’s, has also had a significant influence on her career trajectory.

“Mom and George are and were excellent teachers and coaches. Both were extremely deliberate in the way they went about teaching me the ins and outs of the industry,” Rademaker said. “They taught me how to conduct business, write contracts, navigate negotiation terms and resolve pricing issues with professionalism and ethics always at the core of anything I do.” “They also instilled in me the importance of avoiding shortcuts and to think strategically and long-term. This was all done in such a methodical, consistent way that over time these tenets became my natural instincts.” Perhaps most importantly, Rademaker said, they taught her the value of never making anybody feel like they’re being used. “My mother’s passion was this business and our team,” Rademaker said. “She was a stickler for honesty and sincerity. She always made decisions that were in the best interest of our clients and our team members, and she impressed upon me to do the same. This remains the foundation of our corporate culture, and what attracts high-level talent to our company.’Woven into the training of how to thrive day-to-day in the real estate business was the consistent drumbeat of maintaining a positive mindset— specifically, to embrace the ‘get to’ mindset over the ‘have to’ mindset. “As a leader, a huge part of supporting people’s personal and professional growth is emphasizing the value of a positive mindset not only through words but also with actions,” Rademaker said. “To me, a Power Woman is a person who gets up every day with a fresh outlook, no matter what happened the day before. She’s focused on moving forward and not getting stuck in the negative. Most of all, she remains positive in front of other people. I personally accomplish this by surrounding myself with people whose energy I can draw on for inner strength. It’s very much a reciprocal relationship. No true Power Woman stands on her own, nor does she want to. It’s all about give and take.” To further hone her leadership skills, Rademaker worked spent most of 2018 working with an executive coach. “I strongly recommend executive coaching to anyone who wants to be a better leader—not just women,” Rademaker said. “My coach and I worked together to identify my strengths, challenges, blind spots and opportunities for growth. This process taught me how to better communicate with my team based on their personality types and their innate motivations. Gaining an understanding for the frequencies that different people operate on allowed me to adjust my own style and language so that both parties achieve what they need to from the conversation. It was very eye-opening. It improved my relationship with about 50% to 60% of the people I work with every day and my ability to lead them.” This focus on sharpening specific areas of expertise rather than casting a wide net is partly due to the real estate guidance Rademaker received from her mother and uncle who emphasized excelling in targeted markets rather than settling for mediocrity in all levels of the market. It’s also a result of what Rademaker has come to learn through her own experiences as a mother, a wife, a business owner, and a leader in the community.

JENNIFER SHELLEY Long Lasting Partnerships in Montana Written by Richard Gerding

As a little girl growing up in rural New Jersey, Jennifer dreamed of living in the Rocky Mountains. Always the tomboy, Jennifer started her outdoor life early... dirt biking at 6, exploring in the woods, blazing trails, building forts, and learning to drive the WW2 Willy’s Jeep at 10 years old. Whenever her dad returned from his trips to the Rocky Mountains, Jennifer would pore over his photos knowing it was just a matter of time until she came west. Finding Big fork was a predestined accident. A planned float trip on the Smith River ended up being canceled, so Jennifer and her dad came to Big fork to visit friends. When they flew into the valley, Jennifer just knew this was going to be her home, with the unmatched beauty of Flathead Lake and surrounding Rocky Mountains. Jennifer recalls turning to her dad as they stepped off the plane and saying, ‘This is it.’ “I knew I had found my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow... my OZ!” Two months later, she packed up her VW Rabbit and drove cross-country to Big fork. For many years, Jennifer worked in the software development and technology industry but in 2009, she finally acknowledged that real estate was her professional calling. Starting a real estate career in the midst of a major real estate recession is not a task that most people would take on, but that is exactly what Jennifer did! While agents and brokers were exiting the industry in mass numbers, Jennifer jumped in with both feet. It wasn’t easy, sales were hard to come by, and Jennifer worked multiple jobs

to support her family while getting her new career off the ground, including cleaning the office for $50 per week in order to have gas in her vehicle to show property! By 2013, through persistence and dedication, Jennifer’s sales ranked her as one of the Top 5% of all agents in the Flathead Valley. By 2015, Jennifer had climbed into the Top 1% of all agents in the Flathead Valley—a position she has maintained ever since! All this while raising her four children and becoming the Montana Women’s Sporting Clays Champion (2010, 2011 & 2016). When Jennifer Shelley joined the ownership team at Pure West Christie’s International Real Estate in 2018, she brought with her 10 years’ experience partnering with buyers and sellers in the Flathead Valley. And as a top producer, Jennifer knew that the exclusive affiliation Pure West has with Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World would allow her to continue building lasting relationships with her clients, friends, and business associates. Jennifer searches tirelessly for new ways to provide her clients with the best possible service, marketing opportunities, and support. As Jennifer always says, “My philosophy is to create genuine, lasting partnerships with my

clients so the Pure West Christie’s motto—Relationships for Life—is an excellent fit!” This past year, the Pure West office building in Big fork underwent an extensive remodel. The charming historic cabin on Electric Avenue, dating back to 1905, was transformed into a beautiful mountain modern style building that currently houses 10 agents. Jennifer is extremely proud of the new look and feel of the building and invites you to pop in for a look! Becoming the best takes commitment. Whether it’s in sports, real estate, or life! And for someone who was pulled so strongly to the West—who found her home in the Flathead Valley and never looked back—it makes sense that she’s driven to help others find their home or their special retreat in the place she loves. Jennifer is committed to helping her clients find exactly what they are looking for in a home, investment, and most importantly, a lifestyle. According to Jennifer, “I consider it a privilege to walk these beautiful parcels of property and help clients find exactly what they are looking for. I don’t just sell real estate; I sell a lifestyle, and I’m committed to helping my clients realize their dreams in the Flathead Valley!”

The Hyper-Realistic Paintings of

MARC DENNIS

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, (The Transfiguration of Snow White)

Marc Dennis is an American artist known for his hyper-realistic paintings that celebrate the subversive potential of beauty and identity and explore the charged subjects of love, loss and sensuality. Interested in transformative possibilities Dennis merges various movements throughout the western art historical canon, with modern tropes in order to create fresh paintings rich with hype and narrative where elements of the Renaissance, Pre-Raphaelites, Grimm’s Fairy Tales and Walt Disney’s magical universe intersect. The real and staged figures, flowers, and forest dwelling creatures in Dennis’ paintings are beautiful, powerful, wicked and wondrous that open a window into the contradictions and complexities of abundance and isolation, strength and weakness, and love and death.

The Photographic Genius of

ERIC RUBENS

If you ever fly into Bora Bora, make sure you grab a window seat. The water color there is one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Whether it’s from the air or sea level, you can’t go wrong on any island in French Polynesia. 96

Chasing sunsets across the California coastline has always been my favorite way to end the day. There’s something so relaxing about watching the color reflect on the rolling waves. Watching everyone come together and enjoy moments like these makes California the perfect place to call home.

I did not know about Laguna Beach growing up, but i am sure glad I found it at this point in my life. There’s something so comforting about the golden California coast. It is a mesmerizing energy that pulls you in, and sunset is really when it shines brightest! 103
