ike many highly desirable locations throughout the United States, Frost Creek, a private luxury golf and mountain club located in Eagle, Colorado, saw a surge in interest during 2020. Sales of home sites, presale home construction, custom home starts, and club memberships dramatically increased throughout the summer and fall seasons. The club, celebrating its 5th anniversary, has a unique character and community that has emerged from the ownership’s vision. Located just 13 miles from Eagle County Airport, a major point of entry to the Vail Valley, many have found Frost Creek to be an easily accessible “sanctuary” in the mountains. Louis and Jayme Rinn, joined Frost Creek in 2015 and are now full time residents. The Rinns have also played a unique role in the growth of Frost Creek. Rinn Builders, Louis and Jayme’s building company, has completed six custom homes at Frost Creek to date. They have five more homes currently under construction and are already scheduled to build another six homes at the club over the next two years. In February of 2020 the Rinn Family moved into one of the homes they built at Frost Creek, fulfilling a dream Louis and Jayme started years ago. The Rinns shared their Frost Creek story in a Q&A exclusive. How did you first become aware of Frost Creek? “We knew about the golf course and clubhouse and the natural beauty of the place long before it was purchased and launched as Frost Creek,” said Jayme. “We lived in Eagle and would come up and walk the property and talk about how amazing it would be to live here someday.” So, when did you become involved with Frost Creek? “It was early. I was asked to look at a remodel for a portion of the clubhouse. While there, I was introduced to Chad Brue, Frost Creek’s owner. We began talking about his vision for the club, which I found intriguing”, said Louis. “Jayme and I are avid golfers. We joined the club shortly after and purchased two of the first three home sites made available with the intent to build spec homes.” “The plan, at that point, was to build and sell the first two homes and then build our own home. We fell in love with the first one and thought about keeping it, but before it was fully completed, buyer interest became overwhelming. We stuck to the plan and sold it. The rest is history and what led to Rinn Builders becoming so involved in the construction of homes in the Frost Creek community”, added Jayme.
“It’s true. Soon after that other members saw the first home and began approaching us about building their custom homes,” said Louis. Now his friends at the club jokingly call him the “Governor” of Frost Creek. What’s it like to live at Frost Creek? “For us it’s a dream come true,” said Jayme. “What started with conversations about a distant goal is now our everyday life. We live in this beautiful place, surrounded by a growing and wonderful community that we are helping to shape.” “We’ve really gotten to know many of the members very well through spending so much time living, working, and playing here at Frost Creek. There are so many families that are members and the recreational activities are endless. Our daughters are 14 and 17 and love having their friends come over whether they are locals or from out of town. There is so much for them to do here and the club activities are set up for all ages”, added Louis. What’s your favorite thing about Frost Creek? “The golf course!,” Louis said. “Golfweek Magazine just rated Frost Creek in the Top 10 Private Courses in Colorado. It’s by far my favorite in the Vail Valley, and there are some great courses here.” “For me, it’s the type of people Frost Creek has attracted that really makes this place special. It started with the silver rush in the 1870s — the idea that fortunes could be made in difficult places — and was reborn in the wake of World War II as a ski destination. Leading the way was a former member of the 10th Mountain Division, Friedl Pfeifer, who banded together with industrialist Walter Paepcke and his wife Elizabeth to make the town and its mountain a destination for those seeking renewal of their mind, body and spirit. As Walter once said, “Aspen had fishing, climbing, skiing. Aspen had so much to add to leisure, to the renewal of the inner spirit. hen it comes to safety, value and convenience, there’s no substitute to flying direct to a yacht by seaplane. This is more important than ever since avoiding large crowds at international airports or cities has become paramount for travel. KAMALAME CAY THE GREAT ESCAPE WRITTEN BY VIIA BEAUMANIS
L
ounging on a poolside chaise in a coconut grove, the hawks fly so low that I can see their tiny orange feet, pointed for aerodynamics, as they windsurf against the clear blue sky. Easter weekend, the pool, the adjacent Tiki Bar, the oceanfront restaurant, the island, would normally be bustling. Instead, it’s just me having a dip, glass of Rose in hand, halfway through my third novel in two weeks, walking back to the beach house along three miles of deserted white sand coast. Or, if I take the mangrove side, wandering passed white egrets and blue herons; undisturbed by the sight of a lone human as they scan the turquoise shallows for fish and crab. A 97-acre private island in the Bahamas, Kamalame Cay is the length of Harbour Island but home to just one small resort with 20 bungalows, cottages, and villas. Charmed by the family who transformed this, once uninhabited, cay into their idyllic tropical home, it’s been my favourite island escape since I first arrived here on a travel assignment in 2004. With backgrounds in architecture, design, and landscaping, Brian and Jennifer Hew, then in their 30s, sailed by the island in the mid ‘90s and decided to buy it. Christening it Kamalame for its unique red bark trees, they installed 5,000 coconut palms and a string of bougainvillea-draped West Indies-style guest houses. Over the next few years, the duo would add an overwater spa, clay tennis courts, a freshwater pool, a palapa topped beach bar, a marina and Dive Centre, the Great House. But the finest thing the Hews endowed their tropical paradise with was an inherent gift for gracious island living. Childhood sweethearts who’d met in the third grade when Brian saved his allowance to buy Jennifer candy, the couple descended from a sixth generation West Indies clan. Jamaicans of Portuguese/Chinese descent, now spread across Miami, Toronto, London, Jamaica, and beyond, the Hews are a lively, multi-racial family with a shared yen for dinner parties, dancing, cocktails, dogs, music, food, laughs, children, card games, and good times, to whom hospitality comes naturally. In 2010, a second generation took over island operations. The Hews’ son, David, returning from the U.K. and his career in the art world with his future husband, Michael King, a branding and advertising exec who’d recently sold off a stable of luxury lifestyle publications. Adding a new level of gloss and panache, the duo redesigned menus with a South Asian flair, enhanced wine and spirits lists, and ushered in new directions in design and décor. The monthly Luncheons they introduced, wine-paired and DJ equipped, a fashionable date on the local social calendar as insiders from Nassau and Harbour Island flew or boated in for the day. Serena Williams lobbing balls on the seaside tennis court, the Rockefellers booking the island for Christmas; everyone drawn to the island as much for its remote, natural beauty and off-the-cuff chic, as the convivial vibe of the family that called it home.
Over the years—coming for a week, staying a month—my nickname for the cay became Hotel Kamalafornia (“you can check in, but you never leave…”). A cocktail-in hand hopscotch between drink and dinner parties, beach bonfires and BBQs, Kamalame’s assortment of homeowners added another cozy layer to the melange of friends, family, and ever-returning hotel guests. I’d always joked that this was where I’d spend The Apocalypse. Then, it actually happened. Avoiding the worst of the Canadian winter, I’d arrived in-February, before anyone knew the world was about to go berserk. Facing border shutdowns, by late-March, most of the island’s guests had departed. Betting it was going last awhile, a few remained. Weighing the advantages of staying here or flying home—a tide of infections, and worse, spreading across the West—we were hardpressed, especially the Americans, to locate the upside of self-isolating in a shutdown, plague-ridden metropolis. I imagined myself back in Toronto—a city blessed with, not only a pandemic lockdown but also, April blizzards. What friends described as ‘Styrofoam’ hail. A place where I’d only leave the house to vigilantly mince my way through the grocery store in a facemask, foraging for provisions I’d have to sterilize when I got home. Kamalame, on the other hand, has a working farm. No shortage of beans, bell peppers and tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, or fresh organic eggs. Also, global crisis or not, I could gleefully live on raw fish—ceviche, tartare, sashimi, sushi, poisson cru—and, a few expert fishermen among us, the daily catch was Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Snapper. There’d be no shortage of fresh drinking water; neighbouring Andros Island home to the largest well reserves in The Bahamas. More crucially—long walks and bicycle rides, kayaking the mangroves, snorkelling the coral gardens, laps in the ocean—the outdoor diversions we’d always taken for granted … suddenly seemed like incredible luxuries. Contrasted, as they now were, with the fines that authorities abroad were handing out to people ‘caught’ roving city parks and urban beaches.
Social as it is, was, Kamalame’s charms have always rested in its Either/Or quality: one’s ability to spend every hour mingling with others—or Never See Anyone at All. Tucked into lush jungle gardens overlooking vast swathes of secluded coast, the island’s beach houses are located at such a generous remove that guests could retreat into total privacy. Downing wine, skinny dipping, dialling room service, ordering platters of prepped food to grill on veranda BBQs—if you felt like cooking—larking around on the kayaks and paddleboards assigned to each house; all services appreciated during the quarantine period now implemented for new arrivees. Even the non-essentials are on hand. Luxe toiletries, all the SPF you could ever need, an excellent wine cellar. Riffling through the silky kaftans, tasselled earrings, straw hats, and brightly coloured swimsuits in the boutique, the Dorothy Parker maxim springs to mind: ‘Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves.’ I then immediately feel like an asshole for thinking that—given what most people are going through. The Hews, some resident staff, a handful of homeowners and hotel guests. Grateful, not just for the peace of mind, the freedom to roam, the calming qualities of a natural environment, the rolling waves of an endless sea, but also for the good company. have to wonder how the crisis impacts travel, long term. How do once-bustling destinations with their behemoth hotels, cruise ships, throngs of visitors, adjust to this new reality? Can crowds ever make a comeback? Boats and properties with hundreds of rooms? Amusement Parks? Disney World? Mykonos? Aren’t places like this—the very antithesis of mass travel—the foreseeable future? Hummingbirds and dragonflies flitting just off the veranda, I wander inside to pour myself another glass of wine. Night fallen, I notice how the halo of light off Nassau, now shut down, glows less brightly on the horizon.

When Christopher Columbus came upon Virgin Gorda in 1493, he saw in the island’s shape a portly woman in repose and thus named the island “Virgin Gorda” (“Fat Virgin”). When Laurance Rockefeller first encountered Virgin Gorda, the island was home to a struggling agricultural community. In 1958, the conservationist began buying up land with the dream of establishing a resort in harmony with nature. He chose a sandy crescent bay he dubbed the “wilderness beach” for the site of his environmentally minded endeavor. When it opened in 1964, Little Dix Bay represented a new style of island retreat. The hideaway featured cottages tucked unobtrusively into the surrounding landscape just steps from a pristine white-sand beach that would quickly earn a reputation as one of the finest in the world. In 1993, Little Dix Bay joined Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. The resort continued to draw legions of loyal guests who appreciate its understated approach to luxury and respect for the environment. Following its golden anniversary, the legendary property closed to undergo a multi-million-dollar renovation. So, the design was created to do exactly what it is doing now, serving as a home.” Nicholson also points to what he calls “the sprawling nature” of the gated community affording privacy for all. “With its many amenities, Grand Isle lends itself easily to the new model of luxury long-term accommodations for those who want a safe and secure place where they can live, work, play in a picturesque setting that has all the warmth of a home.” While the concept of re-aligning hotel properties into residences for extended periods is not new, Grand Isle Resort may be the first major property in The Bahamas to embrace the concept so fully and reap the benefits so readily. “No one saw the coronavirus coming, so in the first few months, we were all caught between being in shock and in denial. Then we got down to work and said, ‘What other options are there when people are not doing short-term travel because of restrictions, limited airlift, quarantine requirements, and the like?’ We looked around and the answer was in front of our eyes. Grand Isle’s villas are far more than a hotel ‘room’. rystalline waters and white sand beaches may be hallmarks of many Caribbean destinations, but there’s something about South Andros’ gentle turquoise waters and empty expanses of beach that pull you in and leave an indelible mark on the psyche. Barbara Moore has called South Andros home for more than 60 years. Barb leads ‘bush medicine tours,’ where she takes travelers along the treelined trails, telling stories and plucking various herbs and plants along the way. The plants she will later use to make a do-all tea, “Seven Man Strength,” so named for the seven local plants that contribute to its complex, earthy flavor. She expertly slices bamboo stalks into straws travelers can use to sip cocktails with ecofriendly flair in the evening. The tour concludes with an excursion to the island’s famous blue holes. They’re like Mexican cenotes, but bigger, deeper, and brimming with mythical creatures, should you subscribe to the local legends. It’s when you first float in those cool waters and look up at the cloudless sky that you’ll truly understand why South Andros is so special. Perhaps Canadian television personalities Bryan and Sarah Baeumler had a similar feeling when they found their way to South Andros’ shores three years ago. Once they docked their boat and their feet were in the sand, The Baumler’s knew they wouldn’t easily leave. Whether by fate or fortune, on that same trip the couple came across the Emerald Palms, an abandoned resort that had sat empty since the 1960s – too long for even Barb to clearly remember. Bryan and Sarah took the opportunity, purchased the property almost instantly, and set out to make their mark on the remote Bahamian Out Island. Three years and two television shows later (one in the Baumler’s native Canada and one in the US), Caerula Mar Club debuted in February 2020 as South Andros’ first ever luxury resort. Caerula Mar infuses South Andros into every facet of the property. It is not a resort on an island, it’s a resort that’s part of an island. Tucked away on the east side of South Andros on a stretch of beach where you’ll rarely see another person, six Signature Collection villas dot the shoreline like seashells.
Each has its own unique design that reflects the surrounding nature. With a neutral palette of sandy hues with pops of coral and turquoise to mimic the sea and large framed black and white photographs of island locals, the villas capture the natural and cultural essences of South Andros. Completely absent are the standard TVs and alarm clocks, in their place are porches and ocean-facing reading nooks to allow nature to be the star of the show. The 18 Clubhouse Suites were also designed with their own private patios and ocean views, ensuring that wherever you stay, the waves will beacon you. Back on land, Barb’s husband Dennis Brown, shows visitors the local, cultural side of the island. He takes groups to artists’ studios, the Driggs Bay Dock, and waterfront mom-and-pop restaurants where fresh-cracked conch and fried grouper are best enjoyed with an ice-cold Kalik beer. Bryan and Sarah frequented many of these spots while they lived on-island full-time during their renovation of Caerula Mar Club. While the locals’ spots on island provide intimate ambiance and the true feeling of island life, Caerula’s three culinary concepts are standouts. Named for the folkloric monster rumored to dwell in the depths of blue holes, Lusca – the island’s first fine dining restaurant – is helmed by Chef Sebastian Perez and features a menu that changes nightly based on what’s available and in season. In fact, there is such flexibility with the menu that if a guest wants something particular, all they have to do is ask. During the day, Driffs Pool Bar and outdoor lounge is the perfect place to recline with full pool and ocean views while enjoying a lively cocktail or lighter fare based on the day’s fresh catch. The Caribbean-chic Switcha (so named for the Bahamian limeade-like drink), features vibrant pink palm wallpaper and a menu of coffee drinks and fresh fruit smoothies. Though on-island experiences like strolling through the dense mangrove forest and bush medicine tours don’t fail to inspire, divers and boating enthusiasts might find that South Andros is somewhat of a Mecca for water sports. Beyond its renown for blue holes, South Andros is home to the world’s third-largest fringing barrier reef and is only a short boat trip from the Tongue of The Ocean. Travelers can take advantage of kayak and paddle board rentals from the resort or head off on a fishing or diving excursion with one of Caerula Mar’s island partners.

n her novel Frenchman’s Creek, Daphne du Maurier, a famed British author, tells the story of a French pirate on the run who finds refuge in a small Cornish waterway and later wins the heart of a local lady.
