t Elevated Luxury Life, we believe in dreams, dreamers and the tenacity that often serves as the infrastructure for success. I am honored to be penning my first editor’s letter in an issue containing such proof of mind over matter and energy as the true conduit to great returns. As Lindsay Ell so beautifully expressed, “Through every set back and transitional time in your life ...transitional to the point you feel like you've been through the work and setbacks to the point you reach a breakthrough...it is worth it once you get to the other side.”

2019 has been a year of cultural highs and lows. As our technology advances, we all seek the rhythms of the seasons and marvel at the innovation that comes from a merging of analog with otherworldly invention. Who better to give us a glimpse of what’s ahead than astrophysicist Lawrence Krauss who points to the leaps made from mettle of spirit and skeleton in his last projects with Stephen Hawking, “He would have been so excited to see the photo of that distant black hole, an amazing vindication of our understanding of science.”

With every page we bring you a personal interaction with the best of the best in their field, from Guillermo Zapata, restaurateur-entertainer to Desmond Child, one of the worlds greatest hit makers- both standouts in the field of American Dreams come true. With each of these dreamers and doers we meet the spark within ourselves and ask, “What if...I do?” as they teach us that the only “never-ever” they faced was the prospect of not trying. Here’s to our three years in review: Mayer, Lambert, Clooney, Leto et al. They pushed us as they graced our covers. As we met the challenge, we grew to learn that with intention and action we are unstoppable and anything is possible. America lost one of our true heroes in the passing of Paul Volcker in December who said “Vision without execution is just pure hallucination.”

dreamed of having a number one song ever since I was a little girl.

That just happened during CMA week in Nashville!” Lindsay Ell’s dreams are coming true. In technicolor. She’s on tour in Germany.

We got a hot minute with this hot and supernatural star on a fastpaced rise and learned her time is precious and so is she.

Olivia Daane (OD): How is Germany? What’s the vibe? What’s the response?

Do you enjoy touring?

Lindsay Ell (LE): “It’s opening my mind to how small the world is. They sing to the lyrics of the songs which is crazy! We played a little bit of Kings of Leon and everybody lost their mind. I’m building every market. Earning the next stripe up the totem pole. Growing my music on an international platform opens doors you wouldn’t have thought possible.”

OD: Of all the countries, what has been your favorite you have toured so far?

LE: Listeners in the UK invest so much in an artist. They know your whole catalogue. Uk fans will hold a special place in my heart because of their dedication.They are not there for a single...not for a moment...they are there for your whole career. But Tokyo is my favorite city so far. I have people coming up to me saying “Can I touch your hair?”...like they've never seen a blonde in real life.

OD: What do you mean by “How logical everything is” in Tokyo?

LE: The train system...it is three times the size of London and yet it is so efficient. It is the biggest city I have ever seen. When you are driving into downtown Tokyo, it is like three Manhattans from one end of your peripheral vision to the other! I walked into a 7-11 and a stranger walks up and helps me. Everybody is helpful and friendly in a city that is so big you wouldn't expect that. It's so clean. Not one gum wrapper.

Everybody is so dedicated to their job. If their job is polishing a spoon, they are going to be the best at that.

OD: When it comes to earning your stripes...building your career… what is your goal in the next 5 years?

LE: My goal would be to travel worldwide headlining arenas and crossing genres.

OD: Like your Continuum project covering John Mayer...what other genres and artists interest you for collaboration and interlacing sounds?

LE: I don't consider everything I do straight country. Country has become so broad. If I am going to be a Sheryl Crow or John Mayer, I want to write real songs with real lyrics. I would love to be able to collaborate with Shawn Mendes, Charlie Puth. At the end of the day music is music. Boundaries only hold back experiences for the listener to discover new music. I believe this album I’m working on now (with producer Dan Huff) will sit in that space, in the blurred line arena.

OD: Gorgeous, talented and intelligent! How does Lindsay Ell not have a boyfriend?

LE: I was on the road 280 days last year. Right now I am single. It’s the time to hit things hard. Good luck finding a boyfriend who doesn’t mind this schedule! I’m hoping that one fine day I will meet someone in this walk of life. I just turned 30. I have a lot to do. Being a woman in this industry, it's like being the energizer bunny that needs to run faster. My friends are starting families. I wouldn’t trade this for anything, but sometimes you look in the

mirror and say when is a balance going to be something I prioritize. It’s a weird head space….you set these goals for yourself in life. You always move that bar higher and higher, which is good, but at the same time...when are you happy or satisfied?! It’s a lot of pressure on your psyche.

OD: It can be mind unraveling that constant seeking. You can become addicted to the next stripe. How do you fuel this ongoing desire. What is that next threshold?

LE: Will I ever stop?!! Do I push things away? Am I scared that the wrong things in my life will slow me down? At least I will know I tried my best and hardest. There's a part of this that is out of my hands. That is out of all of our hands. Do we become perfectionists to the point we lock ourselves out of everything?

OD: Like locking out relationships? Do you ultimately want a family?

LE: I definitely want to get married and share all this with someone. Whether I want to have kids or adopt them will depend on timing. I try not to stress about my biological clock until my doctor just told me my eggs are the best for freezing they will ever be now! Everything is coming so fast.

OD: You electrify an audience. It is moving so fast. It must seem surreal how it is coming faster and faster.

LE: Just when I thought I couldn't fit one more thing in my schedule, I fit five. Just when you think you've reached the fastest speed that you can feel, life surprises you. It’s fascinating and scary at the same time.

OD: What’s scary about it?

LE: I guess it is wondering if there will ever be relief or release from the pressure. I know it is pressure I put on myself. Being in a continuum of that is terrifying. Like I will always have that weight. Ever since I was little. I graduated as valedictorian from high school a year early. I was such a nerd. My parents made me go into university and I was trying to do two things at once. So...completely unlike me, I dropped out of business school because I knew if I didn't do this I would be the most miserable person.

I could have never gone to a show without a pit in my stomach. You just figure out ways to keep staying alive. Like figuring out ways to stay relevant through so many cycles. I am most proud of staying alive. I have had to fight and kick and scream. I haven't had the easiest path. I will kick and scream to gain respect in a confident way.

Never lose that drive because of the love you have for your path.

OD: What have you learned the most from being onstage this past year and a half?

LE: I feel like I know who I am more. There is a level of honesty you can have in front of an audience. This next album is going to show that. I am peeling the layers. This is me behind closed doors. Coming out the other side as being somebody who is going to be able to take control of their life. The band I have right now is the band I have always been waiting for.

They push and inspire me. I have clicked into a whole new gear. As a live performer, my show is the best it's ever been, and I am always thinking how can I make it better. I've never been comfortable in my own skin until now. Through every set back and transitional time in your life ...transitional to the point you feel like you've been through the work and setbacks to the point you reach a breakthrough... it is worth it once you get to the other side.

TYPE-A BOHEMIAN, OLIVIA DAANE, FINDS HER VOICE ELEVATED WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS

n 2011 my wife and I walked into LivAspenArt Gallery on the Aspen mall; the exhibit was hip and flowing with good vibes. Young and old were mixing and mingling over a group showing of local artists. The vivacious, captivating gallery owner introduced herself as Olivia. An intoxicating enthusiasm carried the

conversation. Her animated gestures and the passion she held for her artists was apparent. We felt very comfortable in her gallery and interested in the artists she represented with such zeal. My wife and I bought a piece from her that night... and I remember thinking that she was the type of person any artist would be lucky to have as a champion of his or her work.

“IT’S THE ENERGY OUTSIDE THE BOX I SEEK”

Olivia, 49, was top of her class, receiving a B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1992, she then went on to study at the University of Syracuse undergraduate and graduate courses in Florence, Italy followed by an apprenticeship with respected artist Paul Harmon.

Our paths were to cross again in the near future.

After finding my studio at Aspen Highlands, it put me in the special place of being Olivia’s closest neighbor. Our studio doors are twenty feet apart. We share many ideas of the art world and the creative process. What works, what doesn’t, how to manage the business of being an artist, other arty and not so arty things as well. The opportunity to write about her came to me. So on a blustery afternoon at her Aspen studio, I got to talk artist to artist about what makes her a Type-A Bohemian atop the Continental Divide who shares her love of painting through the beautiful wings of butterflies.

“Holy lucky me!” is the first thing out of her mouth as we settle into the chairs in her studio, where canvases are in various states of completion.

She is bouncing with excitement as I begin the interview. Mostly because she is heading to a self-admitted major milestone; showing her work at Aqua Art Miami during ArtBasel and ArtMiami week where she will be unveiling an impressive ceramic installation.

I ask, “What makes you think you are so lucky?”

“Because you channel something and share it with someone whether it’s paint or words, and it touches them.”

“And that makes you lucky?”

“Yes, to do it for a living is fantastic”. It is apparent to me that she has embraced the sacrifice it requires to deliver your vision and connect with your audience.

“Do you feel like you work all the time?”

With no hesitation she answers, “YES, there is the sense that your work is never done... always thinking the next piece will be better, always more to give and no guarantee that you will receive what you seek. Always thinking, what could be? Then finding the time to do it.”

As most things that happen in Aspen, where the world’s most influential come to share ideas and play, she sat next to the Chief of the Open Forum at the Aspen Ideas Festival who was working for Mike Pompeo the Secretary of State. Being in charge of selecting persons to participate in the summit, he asked Olivia to participate after learning of her multi-faceted talents. At the conference, she interacted on The challenge of being supported by one’s artistic efforts design, biomimicry, and how limits are self-imposed. The conference alone can be monumental on its face. Olivia does this in reinforced the idea to Olivia that we should look to nature for design addition to being a super mom to her 20 year old daughter, and ideas that might improve our odds of sustainability. Describing Ki-Lin and her 11 year old son, Daane. her experience she excitedly states, “I like to think outside the box.”

The buoyancy, her enthusiasm, is ever present in each stroke through the wings of the beautiful butterflies she paints. of the brush.

I can attest to the power of her work, one of her baby butterflies resides in my daughter’s room, a beacon of energy and excitement to anyone close to it. One of her truly favorite possessions, as I imagine it is to the hundreds of collectors that have one as well.

Walking by the Opera Gallery Aspen, which is one of thirteen global locations, I see her butterfly paintings hanging next to a Sam Francis. I can’t help but smile. The Type-A bohemian atop the Rockies has truly found and continues to find herself in the best of company. I feel very lucky to call her friend, and colleague.

To those who collect her beautiful work, they should feel lucky as well.

ome artists are made. Others are never known or long forgotten. Anthony James is the artist of right now. He

is hip without even trying. He will hate that sentence. Collectors are gathering and wanting a piece of his abstract sculpture that speaks to the transformations in the world we all sense coming. He is not being “made” as an artist and he is unforgettable. That praise and identity of “it man” is not a goal, for he dismisses the idea that he can or should control the truth he attempts to convey with his abstract sculpture. In fact, he would rather the gesture that is “art” be left alone, perhaps, as he says with part sadness and part disappointment, “The minute we touch truth, we make it dirty.”

Anthony tries to explain why he is a sculptor by telling the story of how he loved boxing when he was younger. He was quite good at it, as he is at most things…a natural. He really does not want me to cite this prowess. As for boxing, “I liked the one-shot-kill of it,” he says with a bit of danger in his tone as he compares it to the strokes that work in painting and sculpture. I managed a few words with this intelligent and seductive artist during some of his needed downtime. Really though, he is creating and thinking about creation all the time. His latest series Icosahedron is selling great guns through Opera Gallery and Anthony is freshly off resounding success in Miami during ArtMiami/ArtBasel and just “done with it all” for the moment, enjoying just “being a human being.” I am sorry to tell you Anthony, but there is nothing “just” anything about the mind and man harnessing perfect, hard surfaces to hold infinite expressions of beauty, nature and creative catastrophe.

Olivia Daane (OD): How did you become interested in visual arts?

What made the young Anthony James tick?

Anthony James (AJ): I grew up in Essex.

Mum took me to the museum every Sunday. It was the best day of my life every Sunday. She loved the impressionists...Degas, Cézanne. I had no idea of any trauma at that time that this might be soothing. I just loved escaping to the museum.

OD: So there you are staring into Monet’s water lilies and delicious paint, drawing and painting yourself with what was quite a mature hand at an early age. What pushed you into your current medium and genre?

AJ: As an artist I realized there was something different than what was experienced in this art (the representational and expressionist work in the museum). I want a visual display of the spirituality of the cosmos. The divine, the divine within us all.

OD: Your work “Birch Quad,” birch contained in boxes held in aluminum and glass walls, evokes a sense of an interplanetary forest. Forests both truncated and reflecting the infinite. They are beautiful and

elegant like a glimpse, a sliver of the multi-dimensional universe, but also seem like an investigation in a lab where we are viewing a specimen of a time long gone. Birch is known as magical material and at one point was used for switches in the classroom to quell spiritual disobedience.

AJ: I am never married and I’m never single.

AJ: We are all connected. It is all connected. There is nothing coincidental about the birch tree being used and being hermaphroditic...I like this idea of infinity...because it reminds of the divinity inside us all.

AJ: I hate the word scarce. I am not in the business of scarcity. The opposite of scarcity is abundance.

OD: All I can do is use words to talk around a subject and hope the reader lands in some experience of knowing as they add their eyes to the marks. How do you convey the intangible, the spiritual through constructed materials? What do want me to write about your work Anthony?

AJ: All I do is I make an object. I make a philosophy. Art, like boxing, the perfect strike, is only a gesture.

OD: How old are you?

AJ: I am 46. Old enough to be your daddy.

OD: Are you single? Married?

OD: What do you love?

AJ: Beauty.

OD: Dislike?

He seemed dismayed by this. I reminded him in other dimensions “full” and “empty” co-exist; that energy can be quaquaversal. He let me speak and agreed on the difficulty of definition, containing meaning, stopping time like his initial

breakout work of a smashed and burned Ferrari suspended in a box- a beautiful disaster. You can almost hear the metal bending, the tragedy both faked and real.

One can sense the alchemy of his materials going from paper to ash and metal to liquid.

I have never had an interview like this. The pauses in conversation are as tantalizing as the words. I feel like I want to go on a magic carpet ride with him. He flew on one as he told me how Madonna once invited him over “for a cuddle.” How she and Blondie were the only true loves of one man. He wants normal time home watching a movie in bed.

I asked if there would be popcorn. He said that would be spoiling someone. He also became very quiet and intense as he explained, “When you try to evolve and make yourself better…it is deceitful. You must surrender to your true self.” Anthony is BEING an artist, his true self. Success, in his world, is setting your mind to something and making it happen. Make it happen he has with hit songs, Broadway plays, an autobiography and documentary Two: The Story of Roman and Nyro which chronicles one of his proudest achievements, raising his sons Roman and Nyro in a twodad household, with friends cheering them on like godfather Bon Jovi. Desmond grew up “very poor” in the projects of Liberty City, Miami, “think the movie Moonlight,” he explains, with a songwriter, single mom staring into the windows of furniture showrooms with living rooms where everything matched and hadn’t been scavenged and wrapped in plastic. Now he likes to make his nests as unique as his music. His family unit, home environments and work successes are all those of dreams.

Dreams he makes come true. Desmond draws his own life lines. The picture he paints daily is an inspiration to both fellow musicians and audiences and a reminder that anything is possible!

Desmond Child (DC): My solo write for Barbara Streisand, Lady Liberty. It’s an important song, now more than ever.

OD: You believe in the melting pot of America. The American Dream. What is you background? Were your parents musical?

I saw him in the New York Times and I said I have to work with this person! We just completed Livin’ On A Prayer: Big Songs Big Life!

OD: What fuels you?

DC: I just keep going! I’m a Scorpio.

Generally, I wake up and look forward because NOW IS NOW!

Elena Casals. I didn’t know people didn’t write songs. My mom, DC: I’d be a visual artist, a sculptor. aunt and uncle were Cuban exiles. At age 14, I would sneak into hotels with my cousin Iggy with all the “snowbirds.”

OD: What is on your screen?

OD: Someone who inspired you along the way?

DC: I watch the news and try to find real news: NBC, BBC.

DC: Laura Nyro (named one of Rolling Stone’s “most gifted OD: Listening to? singer/songwriters of modern times”) and her album, More Than Just a New Discovery.

DC: Buika. She’s an African woman raised in Spain. I love Latin music. It brings me back to my roots.

OD: A performance of note?

OD: Something you dream of doing?

DC: The Appel Room as part of Lincoln Center’s “American Songbook” showcase.

DC: I want a show of my music like Burt Bacharach & Friends. I would invite singers to come with me like a troop OD: Labor of love? to perform all over the world.

DC: I’ve spent three and a half years on my autobiography with OD: What are you reading? my co-writer David Ritz. He wrote the books on Ray Charles, DC: Curtis is the reader! Deepak Chopra.

Olivia Daane (OD): You always have so many irons in the fire. What recent current creative endeavor excites you?

Desmond has more than eighty top 40 hits to his name, #1 hits spanning five decades, a broadway musical Cuba Libre on the way (a true story about two glamorous sisters Bebe and Miriam who were mistresses to Batista and Castro). He has worked with everyone from Ricky Martin (who influenced his merging of Latin and Rock sounds) to Alice Cooper. He has carved out, created and now serves as Chairman of the the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, is raising twin boys, age 16 now, “They are businessminded,” created homes that redefine individual environment (one called “The Birdhouse” in Nashville, another a tribute to the Jazz Age in his NY apartment). With his music, he merges Rock with Latin, anthem with pop, history with current events.

He tells stories. Real ones like the real news he seeks.

From a disjointed and difficult childhood, “I am trying somehow to bring my mom and dad together,” Desmond has a big life indeed. When he wants something, he unapologetically will get it. He knows no other way and by the way, it is working.

It is the 40th anniversary of the band that gave him his start while a student at NYU, Desmond Child and Rouge (dance club hit Our Love is Insane). They are going back into the studio. The album, “DESMOND CHILD LIVE”, was just released via BMG in Oct of 2019 showcasing Child's global mega-hits recorded at Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City. His documentary about raising his sons with lifelong partner Curtis Shaw, Two: The Story of Roman and Nyro garnered awards as “best of” and “audience favorite” at film fests around the country. His performance series An Evening with Desmond Child directed by Richard Jay-Alexander met with rave reviews. “I didn’t have a B plan. I just said the A plan’s gotta work.” Desmond believes in socially conscious albums like Walls which he just produced for Barbara Streisand. He has a husband who is his biggest fan and loving partner. There is simply nothing he cannot do. He is living proof of the benefits of taking life on in a big way, bravely and with passion. What is next for this music legend? Thriving is the only option. Expect big results.

atagonia Heliski (PHS) has taken flight.

“Patagonia is not just puffy coats...it is a place”, exhorts Justin Lozier, the owner and co-founder. He and his wife Catalina Lalor have created “more than a ski vacation and ski trip. It is so much more than going skiing, it is a chance, an opportunity to be part of something new, exploring a region for the first time in history. It is a unique opportunity to be a modern day explorer.” Patagonia defies ordinary and so does this crew and heli operation. PHS has been running for four years in Argentina and now they have opened this space in Chile at the The Mitico Puelo Lodge in the Puelo Valley. It is small. The potential is vast.

Olivia Daane (OD): Why Patagonia?

Justin Lozier (JL): I met my wife in 2005, who is now the General Manager of Patagonia Heli Ski. I was ski-bumming in Vail and she was on a work travel program. Her work visa expired and I followed her to Argentina. I wanted to find a place I could carve out my own life and style of living. I have never gravitated to the commercial lifestyle. Nice things are nice but I am a seeker. I am after a deeper meaning. I believe there is something more to life than what it seems. So, I went to Patagonia. I spent a ski season in Bariloche. I have been guiding since I was 19. I fell in love with the place, the culture and with Catalina as well! I was 4 when I started skiing in Michigan. My father was a National Ski Patroller and taught the whole family how to ski. I was a seeker with an affinity for nature.

far away it feels like Khubla Khan. Your crew is unparalleled. You said you would rather be called founder than owner and leader than boss?

JL: I oversee every aspect of PHS. I am not foolish enough to think I am the best ski guide in the world. If you intend to do something great and want to be the best at what you do, it is imperative that you surround yourself with the best people possible to accomplish the task. It is not my intention to dictate orders...I have found a team. I believe in them and their abilities. I lead following the vision of this business and its future. I put the pieces in place to follow that path. Anyone can be an owner if you have the money, but to truly create something from zero is much more special.

OD: How do you fuel yourself for the intense physical and mental work each day holds?

OD: I have seen in the past few days, terrain unlike any I have ever seen. The climates from ocean to temperate rain forest to massive glaciated terrain…

JL: It is pure passion! It is just passion. I do not do anything special. This is just what I love and care about deeply.

JL: It is extraordinarily diverse, particularly from the Chilean side where we go from our new base at Mitico Puelo Lodge. From a temperate rainforest, to an alpine glacial environment within a 10-minute flight, there is a lot going on.

Massive fluctuations in humidity, temperature, wind and storm systems, from a hanging wet and warm event, you can go up into a meter of snow, things then get cold, starry skies and you are skiing powder!

OD: You are putting a lot of high stakes energy out there! How do you wind down?

OD: This can pose strategic issues. You have surrounded yourself with some incredible people on and off the snow to help make the best, sound decisions and create a rich experience: GM Catalina guides like Harrison Brickman (lead guide and director of Snow Safety), guide Mark Rikkers of Global Powder Stoke, pilots like Erich Hermann and Patricio Letelier of Eco Copter, hostesses (and Mitico Puelo lodge manager) like Valeria Kurguzkina and her staff serving up incredible meals and wines from her nearby vineyard. They help create a rarified elegance, comfort and expert s k i exploration in a place so far,

JL: Honestly, when I am out in the field doing my thing, it is a lot of work and taxing on the body but it is not taxing on the soul. I do not feel like I need rest after that. I feel enriched. I feel good you know! PHS is a compounded challenge: to run a competent and safe heli ski operation, to do it in a part of the world where it has never existed before, to do it with the very small team we have. I am the leader of this effort but it is the people in our organization that help me rise to the occasion and achieve the goal.

Catalina Lalor: The dream was to adventure as a family. Our two daughters live with us at the lodge. I wanted to help people. It is exciting because the pieces are falling in place.

JL: This is all I have ever wanted. This is everything to me. Oh the glaciers, it is tremendous. You can never forget the power that they ultimately have and just to respect them.

“I AM A SEEKER”

Some people have taken on the role of mentors in this quest to join forces with, and champion this magical world of omnipotent nature. Justin Lozier, Founder Patagonia Heliski, and his wife Catalina Lalor, General Manager, have birthed and are trail-blazing with PHS, taking lucky snow seekers into raw terrain, not to besmirch and tamper with nature by touristic overuse

and exploitation, but to educate us, to make us earn our adventure, to give people a taste of these WILD PLACES we need so badly for our existence, both body and soul. Global Powder Stoke owner and guide Mark Rikkers recently kept all engaged and alert on this previously unexplored terrain in Patagonia. He extols “traveling the world and skiing remote, wild and untapped terrain.”

He is another leader, his own curiosity sparking ours.

Mark brings together people, curating groups that will jive like the Shilling family and Bill Oliver, travelers on this journey in September. Mark curates groups who will handle the terrain and each other in global, exotic destinations to exceed their personal goals of doing things in ways few get to experience “places a bit more experimental,” Mark says with a gleam in his eye.

113 JL: Patagonia is so much more. It is so beyond me. My interest truly lies in sharing that experience with other people. It is just real. I love powder skiing and the mountains; bringing people into that environment, to feel something inside themselves, to experience a sense of freedom, wonder, to be overwhelmed by earth and its natural beauty while being kept safe. That is where I find my joy.

awrence Krauss was just back from recording eighteen podcasts in sixteen days around the world “involving the most interesting people in the world, everything from art to science to literature,” for the new Origins Podcast which was released in June. “I have created two new, independent organisms: there is the non profit called The Origins Project Foundation and for-profit Origins Project, LLC. We have recorded everyone from Ricky Gervais, Brian May, Nobel Laureates to Noam Chomsky, amazing people from all areas of life. People in science, literature, Hollywood, it’s just amazing!” Lawrence Krauss is a famous theoretical physicist and cosmologist,

former professor at ASU, Yale and Case Western, author of best-selling books including The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe From Nothing. His awards include The US National Science Board Public Service Award, Humanist of the Year, AAAS Award for the Public Understanding of Science, Book of the Year for Quantum Man and the Oersted Medal. He is both lauded and determined to help the public understand and get excited about science and galaxies far away. ASU ended his original Origins program in July of last year. Lawrence wound up on the wrong side of a misconduct accusation that was subsequently proven false. That tangle did not stop the momentum of his illustrious career. He is already light

years into his new project. He has never marched to anyone’s drum and thankfully the world continues to benefit from his mind-expanding research and ability to convey it in an appealing way to the public at large. OD: What is something in nature that excites you?

LK: Everything about nature fascinates me! The universe continues to surprise me. Most recently the fact that we are surrounded by gravitational waves, these undulations of space and time that we can’t see, that I thought would be impossible to ever detect. We built detectors that can detect even those! That allows us to see into distant universes and black holes! We are opening new windows in nature. Each new window surprises us. The imagination of nature is so much greater than the imagination of human beings.

OD: Something man-made that wows you?

LK: I guess self-driving cars surprise me.

OD: If you were not a world-renowned cosmologist, teacher, thinker, author...what would you be?

LK: I have dabbled in acting. I have been a villain in a Werner Herzog movie and we are making some more. I like movies. A movie star. What I would love to be is a musician, but my problem is I have no musical ability. Although, I look good on paper. I soloed with The Cleveland Orchestra. I wrote a libretto for Gustav Holst The Planets. I was front and center between each movement. I read the narration along with images from NASA for each next movement. I got a Grammy nomination for the liner notes for the music from Star Trek. I talked about how the music captured the themes, the feeling of Star Trek.

OD: On your bedside?

LK: I always have about seven or eight books open. I read twenty-two in the the eighteen days we filmed the first podcast research on topics as diverse as recovered memory, to paleontology to novels. I will open my Kindle and see...I just got home and everything is a pile. For personal pleasure, I just read The Doomsday Machine – Daniel Ellsberg. For the podcast, I have read everything from A Natural History of Beer – Rob DeSalle & Ian Tattersall, Tyrant: Shakespeare on Politics – Stephen Greenblatt, The Myth of Repressed Memory – Elizabeth Loftus, Regenesis – Ed Regis & George Church, The Challenge of Things: Thinking Through Troubled Times – A.C. Grayling and transgender author Jennifer Finney Boylan’s book, Long Black Veil: A Novel.

OD: What is on your playlist?

LK: With playlists, I let Apple choose it for me.

I like independent music, blues, rock and roll. I work out to music every day.

OD: How do you refuel from all this brain expansion and physical exertion?

LK: I enjoy binge watching on Netflix...Amazon.

Last year it was, Game Of Thrones.

OD: Can you share some thoughts on your work with Stephen Hawking?

LK: We talked about many things from the nature of black holes to the possibility of a universe from nothing(also the title of Krauss’ 2012 book). That was a subject of great interest to us both. He was remarkable. When I was with him, he was the most pig-headed, stubborn person I ever met and that’s probably why he survived so much. Just to be able to get up each day required the most intense dedication of anyone you can imagine. He would have been be so excited to see the photo of that distant black hole, an amazing vindication of our understanding of science. Steven changed our thinking on black holes and seeing the image is something I never thought I would see. They took eight telescopes turned into earth-sized ratio telescope so they could image a black hole fifty-five million light years away.

OD: You think that things are likely or unlikely, that there is no prime mover, but nature is so brilliant...we are a part of nature! So do we have a purpose within a larger system?

LK: Enjoy that illusion. If it keeps you going... I have no problem with it. We make our own purpose. It (life) is a remarkable accident that we should just enjoy. Rare events and coincidences happen all the time.

Krauss is a non-conformist with a tremendous mind. Instead of listening to the choir preaching to the choir, he is bringing the choirs together. He does not want to disturb your worldview, he just asks you to peer inquisitively into his. And the Oscar goes to‌

PM: Everyone has access to information, but so few use it. I believe everyone is an artist.

OD: Latest National Geographic exploration?

PM: Abu Dhabi. We made a series of short films about what global composers and artists like me can engage when we look at complex cultures around the world. I am intrigued by the paradoxes of moving toward a post fossil fuel economy in Abu Dhabi. It’s complicated. We shot footage at the Louvre, Masdar, and many other amazing places in Abu Dhabi. I plan on going back in 2020.

OD: Something man-made that inspires you?

PM: I’m deeply into architecture and I have to admit, I’m a huge fan of architects like David Adjaye and Bjarke Engels. Bjarke’s ideas around environmental resilience and New York are amazing - The Dryline.

OD: Something nature made?

PM: The most amazing thing we can see nature doing is the fact that weather is a chaos driven system. The Lorenz Effect shows chaos theory in Nature, or something like the “Three Body Problem” of Edward Poincairé - are phenomena that show the amazing complexity in Nature. We think we are above nature - we have barely scratched the surface.

These kind of things inspire me. Plus the fact that they are super cool.

OD: Mentor? Inspiration?

PM: My biggest inspirations are from composers like Iannis Xenakis and John Cage on one hand, or GrandMaster Flash on the other.

OD: Greatest strength? Biggest challenge?

PM: I’d say my greatest strength is to be flexible.

You’d be surprised at how far that can take you. My biggest challenge is to remember that many people OD: How do you wind down? are totally inflexible, so it’s a bit of a paradoxical PM: I read books all the time. scenario.

PM: I really wish I had time to focus on urban

planning and design. That’s something that has really fascinated me for years. All the kinds of music I make is kind of a reflection of the urban context. I’d love to see if there’s more ways I can bring that to the forefront.

OD: What’s on your bedside(book)?

PM: I’ve been listening mostly to old stuff like jazz from Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, or dub reggae from Scientist and King Tubby. And a bit of FK Twigs.

OD: What’s next?

PM: I am focusing more on my art in 2020 and beyond.

I’m writing this to you from Bonaire but yes, I love islands Places like Ascension Island where Darwin really saw his theory of Evolution in action. That’s on my bucket list.

I remember the first time I tasted Nouvelle cuisine in France prepared

by Les Frères Troisgros. I was 9. It was unforgettable: elegant, artful, beautiful food; so delightful in its presentation, each bite was a bittersweet dissolve. The kitchen and stage from which this gastronomic genius appeared was behind closed doors. L'Atelier Paris Haute Design, a French luxury kitchen design company, just relaunched in 2019 with Ricardo Moraes at the head of the table. Their bespoke kitchens speak to this power of cuisine and aim to marry a level of function and elegance born to inspire the modern-day chef with each kitchen environment rich with history and style. Here is why Ricardo has taken the reins and is quickly earning the equivalent of Michelin stars for kitchen design.

Olivia Daane (OD): Where are you now?

What is your vision for L’Atelier?

Ricardo Moraes (RM): Right now I am in Miami. We have showrooms in Miami, Paris, New York and LA to give people a taste of the possibilities. My wife Maria (who is an architect and interior designer) and I are bringing this brand, that began in the 1830’s, back to its glory. I always loved entertaining. Our projects are unique and customized for people who are passionate about cooking. We start with the floor plan and work with the person or chef who uses the kitchen and what they need it for...meals for events, 200 people or small dinners. The goal is to bring this brand back to glory and open showrooms in London and possibly Dallas next...to continue to innovate and do something no one else is set up to do.

OD: Your designs are sigh-worthy. Literally swooning. You are modernizing but not losing the roots of artful construction. What is a ballpark on one of your fabulous and functional kitchens?

RM: It’s pretty open-ended...$150,000-$800,000. We are integrating design and technology for home cooks and professional chefs alike.

OD: This type of attention to design must make for some high performance days onsite. How do you refuel to stay creative and innovative?

RM: We have a vineyard in Bordeaux and we try to put the noise of the city behind us. We go there about five times a year and for sure during harvest. I avoid reading the news because it is not going to help me in any way shape or form. I listen to chill music. I am a fanatic about cars. I love my new 911 I just got for my birthday. It is just incredible. I am loving spending time on this farm cultivating a crop and watching the whole cycle of a plant growing into a fruit. It is pretty magical. It is all up to the weather.

OD: What would you be doing if not designing and bringing these spaces to life?

RM: I have no idea! I didn’t plan for this. That is how I have been my whole life. I knew I wanted something smaller than my last company and more curated to just bring enjoyment to people.

Ricardo is a lover of life and loving his ability to carefully hone these kitchen environments just like he has learned to slow down with the wine growing seasons. He is installing a kitchen in his chateau in France which dates back to the 1400’s. “This will be my dream kitchen. Let’s put it this way...it is going to be stunning!

If someone really loves cooking and has the budget...we are above mainstream but we are not stratospheric. It looks incredible. Never insult your customer by being outrageous. We are happy to do a range with 6 burners up to a full-blown commercial kitchen. I wanted to make sure we were in line with reality.

Guillermo Zapata (GZ): “I was born in Argentina...in the city of Buenos Aires. At the age of 22, I came for the first time to L.A. I was an actor in Argentina and my goal was to see Hollywood, not to live here. I took a vacation in 1992, and after 10 days, I loved it so much.

The day I was to leave, I was drinking a coffee at Cafe Luna and they hired me as a dishwasher. I knew I had to start at the bottom.

I never went back to Argentina.”

Olivia Daane (OD): What was your first big break in that L.A. scene? You were already an actor in Argentina and your father Rodolfo Zapata was true entertainment industry royalty in Latin America.

GZ: The job opened the door. I got a job! I told my father... and they all thought I got a part in a movie...about the dishwasher job...he hung up the phone. The key was to know the language, so I studied hard and focused every day on learning English. The restaurant involvement was an accident, but I liked it! I did some modeling and then in 1998 I opened SUR which is open still...so, I must have done something right!

OD: You are an actor and a restaurateur.

Tell me about Vanderpump Rules and what you are working on now and how acting came back into the picture?

GZ: My father just passed at eighty-seven. He was a famous, Argentinian legend: a singer and actor. So, I got the desire for performance from him. Like a musician, that gene never goes away but sometimes it takes time to make your first love come alive the way you want it to.

Now I’m producing, filming. Just never give up! Always pursue your dream. I am just at the beginning of what I want, it will never stop. In 2005, I partnered with Lisa Vanderpump Todd, Ken Todd along with my wife Natalie and we made SUR go to the next level. It was 2,000 square feet, now it is 9,000 square feet. The food is great but we also innovate...I am always thinking “What else we can do to entertain people?” Lisa became very popular on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Bravo was looking to do something. The restaurant is a show! I mean everyone working here is a character.

I see it every day. Voila!...

Vanderpump Rules became a reality.

OD: If not this triple threat of dashing restaurateur, entrepreneur and actor, what would you be doing?

GZ: Zoro? Superman? Astronaut?….I wanted all this as a kid, but I wanted to be a performer most, so for me I am just blessed to be doing this at the top. In 2020, you will see me in my film I am acting in and producing, “La Sombra del Gato” directed

by Jose Cicala. I am excited for the next things that are coming in my life.

OD: It is tangible, your ability to inspire. Who is your inspiration?

GZ: My father. He started from being very poor and became very successful. Every person around me has been an inspiration from my teachers to my co-workers, wife, kids.

There is not just one person. I believe in God and the energy that comes from God. I bring the positive from each person I meet into my life. My wife (and partner in SUR Restaurant) of seventeen years is a great mother to our two daughters, Lou (14) and Miarose (11).

DT: I have the ability to grab a large sector of audience. I have never worn blinders.

Olivia Daane (OD): How long have you been in Miami with Douglas Elliman?

OD: So...there is no myopia.

Darin Tansey (DT): I have been with them a total of seven years now, thirteen in South Florida. Each year gets better and better in my career. Eklund/Gomes wanted someone to continue their expansion into South Florida. Given the North Eastern migration here, it is constant growth. I was one of four selected to Eklund/Gomes. The exposure that this particular team has within the massive company and global presence of Douglas Elliman...it is impactful.

OD: What is a property you are excited to have your hands on right now?

DT: I am really excited about 35 East Dilido, a brand new 7,000 square foot home on the Venetian Islands (6 manmade islands dating back to the early 1900’s - spanning between Miami Beach and Miami). The causeway, aka the bridge that connected them, was the longest wooden bridge in the world at one point.

The architecture of this home is ultramodern with a warm touch. It is placed on Biscayne Bay overlooking the city skyline of Miami Beach, but there is also an interior garden, which you don’t see often in South Florida.

It is highly coveted because of the location which makes it easy to take a car to the Wynwood/Design District or the new hip and trendy Sunset Harbor neighborhood.

OD: What is a factor that is important to you in your own living space?

DT: Quality of life. Location in the US and within a city. I love my South of 5th neighborhood. I can walk to the beach, marina, fifty-plus restaurants, entertainment.

OD: You are cranking and living the life! What do you do to unwind?

DT: I am up early with my rescue lab/chow mix watching the sunrise on the beach.

Sunset Harbor is a healthy neighborhood. I am an avid golfer. I go to the gym. I love to drink and collect wine.

OD: Where do you go when you hit the road?

DT: The Dominican Republic. I leave the glitz and glam of Miami Beach to go to a thirdworld country and give back to the world.

DT: I am a salesperson at heart. I have been selling something ever since I was sixteen. I always want to get better. I just had a twelve-million dollar sale. You celebrate the win and you go on to the next. January 1 is coming up and in my mind everyone is back to zero. I am a competitive guy.

DT: There is a culture within and a family. There is a certain feeling within Douglas Elliman. They don’t just take anyone. It is a good feeling to be in a group of select professionals dedicated to being the best of the best.

OD: Something manmade you admire?

DT: The Freedom Tower has a level of significant architecture and meaning behind it. It changes us and moves us. The pieces that shape and change the fabric that we live in.

OD: What is a passion within your career?

DT: Mentoring younger agents is a passion of mine. The basics can get lost. A lot of money at stake tends to bring the wrong qualities out of people. But for the professionals who look at this career as consulting,

CC: I am humble...but I am the #1 agent for all the agents in Santa Barbara...

CC: I would be involved in landscape. I absolutely love landscape. I love being in gardens. I would be a landscape architect. Santa Barbara has the most amazing garden, Lotus Land.

Patrick Barrett (PB): Our team is set up to service anybody, any type of client.

With our diverse backgrounds and experiences, we know how to identify with different clients, and different client needs. I have a great deal of experience with Latin American clients,

and speak fluent Spanish from time I spent in South America as a volunteer after college. That has been an integral part of my success in the real estate business, as we have a strong international clientele in Vail.

Tom Dunn (TD): I was raised in Galveston an graduated from the University of Texas. I moved here to ski and ride my bike. I spent time on the mountain and went from concierge to property management. My service background and lifestyle choice helps me serve clients who want what we have.

Bari Wiens (BW): With a graphic design and marketing background and from a real estate family myself, I knew real estate would be on my career list. I love the Sotheby’s brand with their global reach. We are a team and act like our own individual brokerage. Brooke is extremely efficient in handling all of our back of house items.

OD: What is the landscape of the Vail market? Is there a finite amount of property to move in a place as sought after in your gorgeous mountain valley?

TS: We deal in obsolescence replacement. Right now we have five or six new construction projects. We have a reputation for handling those projects soup to nuts.

We employ technology to make those come alive: elaborate floor plans, renderings, animation; we do it all under our umbrella of service. We can start from the beginning or come in to sell at the finish line. This last year we shattered records!

OD: What is a goal as a company, a brand and a leader?

TS: We just celebrated that we were the only group passing 100 million in sales for a few years now. We have our eyes set on $200 million and we would have reached it had we not moved a big deal into January.

We look at numbers not as a metric but how we achieve a quality level of service: 3-D tours, professional copyrights, copious notes on finishes and unique features in the homes. More than 90 percent of our listings don’t involve electronic lockboxes...we show up and we greet people. We don’t want to be #1 by a little bit, we want to be #1 by a mile!

Tye loves skiing, hiking and fishing, the outdoors, time with his kids and wife and tinkering with his 78 landcruiser. He promises, “Selling real estate is still one of my favorite hobbies. Balance in life is a battle.”

There are clearly no halfway’s for him at home or as a business leader.

“I task my team with staying involved in the community, not because it is good for business, but because you care about it.” Tye serves on the board of Bravo! Vail, for whom he used to set up stages and Ski Club Vail because he wants to support his own kids and others to get outside.

His drive comes partly from athletics with his background as a college baseball player. “We can keep kids pushing themselves, we can increase their chances to be good citizens and active and successful in whatever their endeavors are in life.”
