It would seem we all got a sly wink from Mother Nature on Earth Day last year. On April 22, 2020, which was coincidentally the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the planet was on a pandemic-induced break due to Covid-19. The national lockdowns resulting from coronavirus caused a planetary pause and, in turn, a natural experiment of the relationship between human activity and our effect on the environment. From China’s Hubei province to industrial northern Italy to New York City, pollution levels plummeted as lockdowns aimed at slowing the viral spread shuttered businesses and trapped billions of people at home. Both satellite and ground-based observations have shown significant reductions in some air pollutants. Researchers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center found that since February 2020, pandemic restrictions have reduced global nitrogen dioxide concentrations by nearly 20%. According to NASA’s study, Wuhan, China, the first municipality reporting an outbreak of Covid-19, was also the first city to show reduced nitrogen dioxide emissions, 60% lower than simulated values expected. A 60% decrease in Milan and a 45% decrease in New York followed shortly as their local restrictions went into effect. NASA study co-author Emma Knowland said, “You could, at times, even see the decrease in nitrogen dioxide before the official policies went into place. People were probably reducing their transit because the talk of the Covid-19 threat was already happening before we were actually told to shut down.” It would seem Mother Earth was sending her inhabitants a global message: There is no planet b. Her warning is one that the cannabis industry is young and nimble enough to heed and be proactive in implementing initiatives to improve sustainability practices. Commercial cannabis creates a lot of pollution both

within agriculture and manufacturing, ranging from plant waste to single-use packaging. Packaging especially could use a more thoughtful approach. I first noticed it during a trip to West Hollywood in mid-December 2018. I was standing at a crosswalk outside of a MedMen dispensary when I saw a garbage container near the stoplight overflowing with the dispensary’s signature red bag. Customers were buying product and then tossing the red shopping bags the minute they left the store. I’m well aware that government regulations require strict packaging guidelines to ensure cannabis products leave the store in tamper-proof and childproof bags or plastic sleeves. These weren’t those. The bags that customers were abandoning were slick paper branding bags meant solely to show off MedMen’s logo. I was horrified by the teetering pile of brand-new bags overflowing from the garbage can. Even though marijuana use is legal in California I imagine shoppers were not keen on advertising their cannabis use by carrying around a glaring red beacon. Read the room folks. I do acknowledge government regulations often require large amounts of single-use plastic waste to be created in the process of protecting the public. This contradiction makes it quite difficult for cannabis businesses to utilize sustainable packaging materials when complying with the law. However, as more and more states legalize cannabis and the industry continues to grow, leaders in the space need to be more creative and thoughtful about devising sustainable ideas to solve the problem. The cannabis industry is used to pivoting, especially after all that 2020 delivered, and as we know, good planets are hard to find. Happy Earth Day!

Food Network has dubbed 2021 as the year of the cookie because of the treat’s potential to be a blank canvas of endless possibilities. Whether as an indulgent treat or a form of decorating creativity, cookies are the perfect vessels for experimenting with food trends. They can be dressed up as healthy snacks like fiber- and prebiotic-packed cookies or great as a place to sneak in fun ingredients. Food Network predicts ingredient experimentation will include batches of cookies with dried herbs, flowers, and even savory spices like paprika and black pepper. Or in elevate’s case, a Snickers bar is the ingredient that ups the cookie creativity. This month we feature a recipe from Blaz’n Chef Celena Esquer, a celebrated culinary professional who was nominated for Best CBD Edibles by Las Vegas Cannabis Awards for her novelty candy company Sweedies.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup unsalted cannabutter (2 sticks softened) 1 cup granulated sugar 2/3 cup light brown sugar 2 tsp. vanilla 4 eggs 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 3 tsp. baking powder 3 cups all-purpose flour 4 Snickers bars (chopped)*

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350°. In a bowl add butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar, mix until creamy. Add vanilla and eggs and beat for 30 seconds. Add dry ingredients of flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda, mixing on high until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Once cookie dough is ready, chop up four Snickers bars into small squares and fold into cookie dough with a spatula (do not use the mixer to mix in Snickers). Use an ice cream scooper to measure dough for perfect size cookies every time. Use nonstick spray on baking sheet and place cookies one inch apart. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove cookies from the oven and let sit for one minute before transferring them to a cooling rack and let sit for 5 minutes. *For fun! Add any of your favorite candies to this recipe. Please remember when cooking with cannabis you are cooking with a medicine and the medicine amount and portions of the food ingested should always be taken into consideration. Always start out with small portions or doses and wait 30 minutes to an hour before eating any additional portions of food that has been medicated.

usic has been a key component of cannabis use for as long as anyone can remember, and musicians have always benefited from the therapeutic and creativity-enhancing properties of marijuana. So it makes sense that there are many, many songs about getting stoned, from explicit tributes to pot usage to more oblique nods to the herb, couched in abstract lyrics. No matter how vague the references, though, it’s easy for the right listeners to discern exactly what musical artists are talking about. Here are 10 classic stoner anthems that you can crank up the next time you partake.

BLACK SABBATH, “SWEET LEAF” (1971)

CAB CALLOWAY, “REEFER MAN” (1932)

Anyone who’s a regular cannabis user knows where that line is, and sometimes one toke is all it takes to go from pleasantly buzzed to something more intense. This catchy softrock tune takes on that idea in a breezy, sunny fashion, but it’s clear what the duo of Mike Brewer and Craig Shipley are talking about. It’s so clear, in fact, that Vice President Spiro Agnew spoke out against the song at the time it was released, although its gentle, affable tone now seems impossible to object to.

One might imagine that popular musicians didn’t start singing about cannabis until the freewheeling hippie days of the 1960s, but this bouncy, horn-driven tune is just one example of the many marijuana-themed songs from the jazz era. Calloway’s version, with his talk-singing intro, is the most famous, but “Reefer Man” (under various iterations of its title) is a jazz staple, and artists at the time weren’t shy about the song’s exuberant (and explicit) weed references.

BOB DYLAN, “RAINY DAY WOMEN #12 & 35” (1966) In typical Bob Dylan fashion, a lot of the lyrics of this perennial favorite get lost in the singer-songwriter’s trademark twangy mumble. But it’s easy to make out the shouted “Everybody must get stoned!” in the chorus. Also in typical Dylan fashion, he’s remained evasive about the true meaning of the song, but it’s been adopted as one of the most recognizable cannabis tunes, with covers by everyone from Jimmy Buffett to Lenny Kravitz.

It’s no coincidence that hard rock bands heavily influenced by Black Sabbath are referred to as “stoner rock,” and this Sabbath staple is a good reason why. Opening with a sample of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing after smoking a joint, “Sweet Leaf” proceeds to offer an ode to cannabis, with singer Ozzy Osbourne professing his appreciation in very clear terms. “I love you, sweet leaf,” he sings over one of the catchiest riffs the band ever wrote.

BREWER & SHIPLEY, “ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE” (1971)

MUSICAL YOUTH, “PASS THE DUTCHIE” (1982) Ironically, the effort to clean up the original Mighty Diamonds song “Pass the Kouchie” for this reimagined version only succeeded in creating new pot-related slang. British pop-reggae group Musical Youth had their only major hit with this song about being generous with your stash. Replacing “kouchie” with “dutchie” was meant to make the song about food instead of cannabis, but “dutchie” just became a term for a blunt anyway. Sharing your food while sharing your pot is still a good practice, though.

SUBLIME, “SMOKE TWO JOINTS” (1992) Southern California ska-punkers Sublime were all about cannabis, but their most famous pot anthem is actually a cover of a song by reggae band The Toyes. Sublime singer Bradley Nowell gives the song an affable SoCal surfer vibe, detailing how he goes about his day smoking two joints at every available interval. For many fans outside the greater LA area, “Smoke Two Joints” was their first introduction to Sublime and the band’s style of punk rock with a chill stoner attitude.

CYPRESS HILL, “HITS FROM THE BONG” (1993) Cypress Hill have made a brand out of being cannabis ambassadors, so it’s easy to assume that that’s what all their songs are about. But pot is incidental in most of Cypress Hill’s biggest hits, which is why this slightly lesser-known song is the definitive pot pick for the Latin hip-hop group. Over a sample from Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man,” B-Real and Sen Dog rap about the joys of taking a big ol’ rip from your favorite bong.

No other figure in popular music has embodied cannabis enthusiasm more prominently than rapper Snoop Dogg, and this early hit features one of the all-time classic choruses about chilling

AFROMAN, “BECAUSE I GOT HIGH” (2001) In some ways, this goofy novelty hit could be regarded as an anti-marijuana song, as rapper Afroman amusingly details all the ways he messed up daily tasks because he was too high. But it has such a good-natured approach that Afroman’s various screw-ups come off as endearing rather than pathetic, and it’s clear that smoking pot has enriched his life in ways that all that other stuff didn’t. Plus, it’s just fun to yell, “Because I got high!” after every line.

WILLIE NELSON, “ROLL ME UP AND SMOKE ME WHEN I DIE” (2012) It’s never been a secret that Willie Nelson is the biggest cannabis supporter in country music, but it wasn’t until nearly 60 years into his career that Nelson recorded a song celebrating his lifetime of getting stoned. If you believe the song, Nelson himself is so infused with marijuana that his ashes can be used to get people high. It’s an uptempo country tune with guest appearances from fellow pot enthusiasts Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson and Snoop Dogg (of course).

Celebrate Earth Day with a close encounter of the camel kind By Beth Schwartz

a two-toed sloth, and Thorn, an African crested porcupine. They live here now. Seeklus took them in after Roos-n-More closed in 2016. “That was out of the blue,” explains Seeklus. “I hadn’t planned on this being anything more than camels but then (Ambien and Thorn) needed a home.” This has opened the door for Seeklus to add animals other than his caravan of camels to the wildlife park he started when he purchased the land in August 2016. In turn, this year the Zoological Association of America-accredited ranch became home to a very lively New Guinea Singing Dog and two brother and sister Sand Cats, who look as if they are porcelain statues when giving you a once over. Seeklus, who is currently in the middle of machinations to acquire a Somali wild ass, says, “On a small scale we would like to make a contribution to endangered animals.” Adds Imbach, who has worked at the ranch for three years, their vision is “a commitment on our part to add a significant value with regard to conservation and education in the community.” As for cannabis, there’s none here. In September, Seeklus announced partnerships with several Las Vegasbased dispensaries to bring customers to the Desert Ranch Experience by Camel Safari. Called Canna-Camels, the adventure included making in-store purchases or doing curbside pickup at the dispensaries where guests would receive discounts on cannabis products before boarding a van for the drive to the wildlife park. During the approximately one-hour-and-twenty-minute journey, participants could imbibe and “get warm and toasty” joked Seeklus, before going on an animal encounter, and having a catered lunch. However, Covid-19 restrictions effectively dismantled the Canna-Camels program toward the end of 2020. This spring as Gov. Sisolak eases back restrictions Seeklus will pivot his program to see what attracts Las Vegas tourists to see his caravan of camels. But for the time being visitors to the ranch have two options. They can take a 8 a.m threehour Feed with a Keeper Safari to meet the wildlife or do a Day Camp Glamp Safari from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. where participants take a tour of animal encounters and make friendship bracelets during a Bactrian camel fiber arts and crafts activity. Although the timing of our visit did not coincide with a birth and celebratory cigars for Chewy or Fabio, we did get outdoors and enjoy a socially distanced and safe trip to commune with Mother Nature. t’s birthing season at Camel Safari ranch. We arrive at the ranch in Bunkerville on a briskly cool sunny day in early March to find several of the camels close to labor. While we are visiting that day there is a good chance the ranch’s camel population could very well swell from 31 to 32. Three calves were born in the spring of 2020 and the ranch’s owner Guy Seeklus estimates they could add three this spring as well, but it’s hard to tell. “We don’t really know who is pregnant and who is fat,” jokes Seeklus. “We do know one is definitely pregnant because her milk has come in. Before you leave today there could be a new addition.” More than a year in the making, the gestational period for a dromedary (one hump) camel is 15 months and for a Bactrian (two humps) camel its 13 months. According to Seeklus camels are pretty much self-sufficient during the birthing process so it’s just a wait and watch situation. Although once he was hanging out on his hammock waiting for the expectant mother to deliver and it didn’t seem to be moving along as it should. Turned out it wasn’t and Seeklus had to intervene and cut the calf out during delivery. Just one of the occurrences in the life of a keeper of a camel caravan. With the delivery of this impending development, we get in a golf cart to drive the 176-acre property that butts up to the Virgin River to meet some of the ranch’s wilder residents which includes 19 dromedaries, 11 Bactrians, and one hybrid dromedary/Bactrian cross. Our first introduction is to Chewy, a sprightly 11-year-old tawny dromedary bull and probable father-to-be, that Seeklus has owned since the Wookiee warrior-inspired camel was six months old. We next encounter another potential father-to-be. Fabio is a five-year-old paint camel, who is as extroverted as they come with an extremely active doula, which is a pink sac that could be mistaken for a tongue because it hangs out of the side of his mouth to attract females during mating season. He’s quite the flirt which explains a lot since he’s considered young to be a father, but he is dad to one of last year’s calves, Fauci. As Seeklus and the ranch’s resident camel wrangler Allie Imbach, who has a Zoology degree from Weber State University, throw oat hay over the fence, Chewy and Fabio’s many neighbors joltingly lope over to check us out and get in on snack time. Joining the others for the hay of it is a pack of alpacas as well as a llama named Hsieh (for Tony), and a zedonk, which is a cross between a zebra and a donkey, named Eeyore. There’s other wildlife here too. If you ever visited Roos-nMore Zoo located in Moapa then you’ve probably met Ambien,

PIPE DREAMS FANTASTICAL 420 IDEAS WE MAY HAVE CONJURED UP AFTER A PUFF OR TWO As we roll through April and celebrate all things 420 this month, the team at elevate started fantasizing about things missing from the cannabis marketplace. Granted the fanciful ideas we came up with are daydreams that fall far outside of regulatory parameters, we still think they would be a high-point in our daily lives. To follow are just a few things from our CBD-infused dreams that would bud up our world.

PHARM TO TABLE How about a farmers’ market where you could peruse tables of freshly picked cannabis straight off the farm and buy a bundle? Just like you would buy a carton of farm fresh eggs, a box of juicy strawberries or cherry tomatoes, it would be dreamy to buy fresh bunches of cannabis. Whether you are juicing cannabis leaves for your morning drink or need it for a canna dinner party you are hosting, shopping at a cannabis farmer’s market is an idea that has big appeal.

Just imagine it, a spa where your body would be drenched in the healing benefits of cannabis from head to toe. Upon arrival at the spa, guests would begin to decompress by enjoying a tasty cup of terpene-infused water with a hint of limonene (lemon) or myrcene (mango). Then guests would continue to unwind by selecting from a list of cannabis services such as CBD facials, massages, manis and pedis. A POSITIVE OUTCOME UFC essentially strikes marijuana as a punishable offense in its anti-doping policy

driving. There’s a blood alcohol level of 1.08 and they were trying to find what that magic number is for marijuana. And what this very detailed report says is that there is very little correlation between blood and even more so urine, THC levels, and impairment,” says Novitzky. “And that’s exactly what we’re seeing. We’re seeing fighters who have told us that days, if not weeks before a fight, they discontinue and they’re still exceeding that 150 nanograms per ml threshold. They’re obviously not impaired. I mean you’re not impaired for what you did the night before, let alone days and weeks before. This report basically recommends to Congress that the way to handle this from a driving impaired perspective is to do a field sobriety test. The blood readings of THC aren’t going to tell you much if anything in terms of impairment, you need to do some type of sobriety tests.” Novitzky continues, “There was a high level of confidence in us relying on a government report made specifically for Congress so, we followed that lead, and I don’t think by any means we’re going out on a limb here.” With the DOT report in hand, the UFC decided retroactively, as of January 1, 2021, a positive drug test for carboxy-THC would no longer be considered a violation unless the United States Anti-Doping Agency is able to prove that an athlete intentionally used it for performance-enhancing purposes. No longer a punishable offense in UFC’s anti-doping policy, Novitzky notes, “In my six years here, and I’ve been with a lot of fighters pre-fight, I’ve never seen anybody impaired and I don’t anticipate that will be the case. It would be a very rare occasion. So, we’ve taken marijuana off of our prohibited list.” But he adds, “Marijuana still could be a punishable offense, but the fighter would have to show some type of evidence of impairment when they’re getting ready to fight. So, a reading in excess of 150 nanograms per ml by itself is no longer in violation. It would have to be paired with some type of evidence that the fighter was actually impaired, whether it’s visual evidence, a confession, smell, bloodshot eyes, etc. You need that extra step. “Because, again, impairment is the thing that you’re concerned about with marijuana, how is it affecting you in your fight or your competition? And certainly, I think everybody would agree that using marijuana on Tuesday night, come Saturday night has no effect whatsoever for the fighter’s ability to fight or any performance enhancement advantage or any health and safety disadvantage. There’s nothing there.” ‘There’s nothing there’ seems an appropriate response to testing fighters for marijuana in general. Because when the effects of cannabis are considered, it’s hard to believe using cannabis the day before or of a competition would enhance a fighter’s athletic performance. “That’s a big debate, right?

The UFC was the first professional sports league to figure out how to work within Covid-19 restrictions to ensure that the show could still go on. Ever nimble, UFC announced in April 2020 they would pursue an international venue described as a “private island” to host their fights. By June that promise was delivered in the form of Yas Island, aka “Fight Island,” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates with four fights scheduled throughout July. However, as quickly as flamboyant UFC boss Dana White had his organization bubbled up and fighting, it wasn’t without challenges. “Because of Covid-19, we saw a lot of last-minute replacements. We do extensive testing, we have a bubble type environment to make sure that we do it before even a fighter travels to one of our events, they have to have a negative test at home,” explains Jeff Novitzky, UFC senior vice president of athlete health and performance. “So, what we’re seeing is positive Covid-19 tests and a lot of fighters dropping out at the last minute, and in turn a lot of last-minute replacements to those cards. This became a real issue because for a Saturday fight, we would sign a new fighter on a Tuesday or a Wednesday.” The problem wasn’t finding enough fighters to replace those who tested positive for Covid-19. The problem was finding fighters who were testing positive for a whole other issue. “I’m getting calls saying I used (cannabis) last night because I didn’t know I had a fight coming up, so what’s going to happen on Saturday? And unfortunately, we saw several instances of fighters testing positive on fight night because they had used fight week,” says Novitzky. “What I learned pretty quickly in the Covid era is that we’re talking days, sometimes weeks before fighters would discontinue using and yet still, were coming in over that level.” This led Novitzky to take a closer look at the issue. “I think it’s really inherently unfair to fighters. We had one, signed him on a Wednesday for a Saturday fight and he said, ‘Look, I used on Tuesday night. And so, we had a long discussion with him. He’s a new fighter too so he’s like, ‘Look, this is my foot into the door to the UFC. I gotta take this.’ But then the question became what happens on Saturday if he tests positive. The fighter won the fight and actually got a performance of the night bonus, $50,000. And sure, enough he ended up testing positive. He was sanctioned by the Nevada Athletic Commission and his win was taken away. He was suspended four-and-a-half months and he had a small fine. That’s really unfortunate and that’s a problem.” A problem that Novitzky found an answer to in a most unexpected place. It was in a 2017-2018 U.S. Department of Transportation report to Congress that included a section on ending alcohol and other drug impairment in transportation. In the DOT report “they were looking at states legalizing medical and recreational marijuana to try to figure out drunk

I think the argument would be potentially anti-anxiety or calming nerves a little bit. Nervousness and stress are a big part of the UFC. When you’re coming up on a UFC event, you are competing against one of the most skilled mixed martial artists on the planet whose job is to try to inflict damage and get you to stop. I think the argument would be if you’re less nervous or concerned about that, could there be an advantage? Certainly, the ability to handle and deal with pain in a fight, potentially that can be an argument,” says Novitzky. “Personally, I don’t necessarily buy that. I buy more on the health and safety aspect where your reaction times may be slowed a little bit and that would be a danger to the fighter themselves.” The health and safety aspect brings us to the reason why UFC fighters use cannabis in the first place. Athletes prefer it for recovering from injuries over opioids. “That’s another big reason why we were looking so close at this because since cannabis is prohibited in competition, it is funneling and directing athletes to what I feel are more addictive, definitely more addictive, more dangerous substances like opioids,” explains Novitzky. “So certainly, based on the research that I know of about propensity for addiction, cannabis would be much less dangerous than things like opioids. Things like anti-anxiety medications, like Xanax, certain sleep aids, like Ambien, this is what our fighters I think, for the most part, are using cannabis for—certain levels of pain control, for anti-anxiety, and to sleep. I don’t think there’s any argument or any question that comparatively cannabis versus these synthetic prescription drugs would be safer and certainly have less addictive properties.” Even though Novitzky prefers UFC’s athletes use cannabis over opioids, the former federal agent for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is anti-drug across the board. “At UFC we’re a proponent of our athletes using no drugs. We would love to see them all drug-free, but if you look at the reality of it these are high level athletes who put their bodies through things that most normal human beings don’t do. Because of that, they’re suffering consequences. They’re getting nicks and pains. A lot of them, especially during fight week, have a very difficult time getting any sleep because of the anticipation of this fight so it just was not fair to them, in our opinion, of what these strict liability rules are.” In then end, it comes down to a question of fairness. “I think we’ve done a great job of both having a really strong comprehensive program, yet on the other side, being as fair as possible and taking everything from an athlete’s perspective into consideration,” concludes Novitzky. “You’ve got to be fair and you’ve got to take the athlete into consideration. And that is, certainly as it relates to cannabis, what we are doing.”
