There’s no question, cannabis does a body good. Although because cannabis is a Schedule I drug and federally illegal, research is sparse. But we do know anecdotally that it works. Cannabis contains hundreds of cannabinoids which directly impact how well your body functions. With the most prominent being CBD and THC, cannabinoids help to keep your body’s endocannabinoid system [ECS] in homeostasis offering beneficial effects. Here is a brief sampling of what cannabis can do for specific diseases and conditions. • Regulates and Prevents Diabetes With its ability to regulate insulin and manage caloric intake efficiently, cannabis can help regulate and prevent diabetes. Research conducted by the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis (AAMC) has linked cannabis to stabilized blood sugars, lower blood pressure, and improved blood circulation. •Regulates Seizures Research conducted on CBD has shown that it can help control seizures with many ongoing studies seeking to determine the effect cannabis has on individuals with epilepsy. • Mends Bones Cannabidiol has been linked to helping heal broken bones and quickening the process. According to Bone Research Laboratory in Tel Aviv, it also helps strengthen the bone in the process of healing. • Provides Relief for Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis leads to painful muscle contractions and cannabis can help reduce that pain. • Helps with ADHD/ADD Individuals with ADHD and ADD have trouble focusing and tend to have problems with cognitive performance and concentration. Cannabis has

shown promise in promoting focus and is considered a safer alternative to Adderall and Ritalin. • Fights Cancer One of the biggest medical benefits of cannabis is alleviation of side effects from cancer treatments. There is a good amount of evidence that shows cannabinoids can help fight certain types of cancer. • Helps Treat Depression and Alleviate Anxiety The compounds in cannabis can help in stabilizing moods which can ease depression. Taken in monitored dosage and in the proper way, cannabis can help alleviate anxiety and calm users down. • Shows Promise in Autism Treatment Cannabis is known to calm users down and control their mood, helping children with autism who experience frequent violent mood swings. • Slows Development of Alzheimer’s Disease Cannabinoids contain antiinflammatories that fight the brain inflammation that leads to Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive degeneration. • Deals with Pain Linked to Arthritis The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, commonly found in creams, salves and balms, help arthritis sufferers deal with pain. • Helps with PTSD Symptoms PTSD doesn’t just affect veterans but any individual who goes through a trauma. Cannabis helps control the fight or flight response, preventing it from going into overdrive. As more research is conducted, cannabis has the potential to be a natural cure-all for many ailments and conditions. It truly can do a body good.

NEED A DOSE OF GRASSROOTS UPLIFTER? Get it when 311 brings 311 Day celebration to Las Vegas’ Park Theater By Josh Bell

F

or the members of veteran alt-rock band 311, cannabis isn’t a bandwagon to jump on. It’s been an integral part of the band’s lifestyle since the members first came together in their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska in 1988. 311 has been promoting cannabis use and performing at cannabis festivals for years, well before launching their own line of cannabis products in 2016. “It kind of makes us elder statesmen of a certain ilk in that community,” says bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Willis, one of the group’s founding members. Willis and his bandmates are not only elder statesmen of cannabis; they’re also elder statesmen of rock, recently celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band and still going strong. Casual listeners probably remember 311 best for their string of alt-rock radio hits in the 1990s, including “Down,” “Come Original,” “All Mixed Up” and “Don’t Stay Home,” but the band has cultivated a massive following in the ensuing decades outside of the mainstream, pursuing a career more similar to jam bands like Phish and Widespread Panic than altrock contemporaries like The Offspring or Incubus (although 311 has recently booked co-headlining tours with both of those acts). The band’s music combines elements of rock, reggae, funk and metal, for a sound that was completely unique

on ’90s rock radio, and remains so today, allowing 311 to fit comfortably on a variety of touring and festival lineups. Thanks to relentless touring and an improvisational approach to concerts (rotating up to 80 or 90 different songs in a given tour), 311 has the kind of fans who follow them around, attending multiple shows on each tour and keeping track of set lists to spot rare covers or deep cuts. “Music’s too fun to have it canned and have it all be three-and-a-half-minute little pop songs,” Willis says. “We can take you somewhere.” For Willis, guitarist Tim Mahoney is the trailblazer of that musically adventurous spirit. “His tones that he pulls off, and the time that he takes into making the crunch ride and making the dreamy as dreamy as possible is something to witness,” Willis says. “I know he’s got his own circle of fans that appreciate what he does and the details that he puts into it.” For hardcore 311 fans, the most important holiday is 311 Day, an event held every other year on March 11 (or 3/11, if you will), in which the band packs a massive number of songs, from the popular to the obscure, into a single concert (or, these days, a few concerts), as a thank-you to all the fans who support them. “It really started from the fans getting together on March 11 and having listening parties and stuff,” Willis explains. “It happened so much, in such a cool way,

march | elevatenv.com 9

organically, from our point of view, that we turned it into an event.” The first 311 Day concert was in 2000 in New Orleans, and the event moved to Las Vegas in 2010, after which the two cities have generally alternated. This year’s 311 Day is a three-night event at Park Theater, a smaller venue than some of the arenas that have hosted past events. That allows for a more intimate connection between the band and fans, and the three-night structure (the longest 311 Day yet) gives the musicians even more of a chance to branch out. “It has a wow factor of 10 on a scale of 10 for any attendee,” Willis says of the venue. “It just makes it fun for the audience, and it makes it easy for us to say yes, because we can bet on it selling out.” With fans coming into town from all 50 states, 311 Day is a sort of combination 311 fan reunion and convention, and Vegas is the perfect place for that. “Vegas is just an inevitable place to put on an epic, fantastic show,” Willis says. “It’s magic.” Vegas is also a place where 311 fans can have access to legal cannabis, something that the band supports both casually and officially, with its Grassroots Uplifter line of vape pens and CBD products. Frontman Nick Hexum is the driving force behind the band’s cannabis operations, but all of the members actively participate. “Nick is very involved, especially on the business side, trying to find the right fit for our ideas and just having the name behind it and having it be a product that we are really proud of,” Willis says. “That’s his world, but we’re all into trying it all out. Those are fun meetings.” The rising popularity of CBD led to the recent expansion of 311’s cannabis business, and Willis hopes to see Grassroots Uplifter grow at a measured pace, always reflecting the band’s values. “[That’s] something we’re really excited about as a new product,” he says of the CBD line. “It’s good for everybody, or so it would seem.” The expansion of legalization helps 311’s businesses in cannabis and in live performance, and it’s a relief for the band’s fans, too. “We’re just happy to have people be arrested less for it,” Willis says. “It’s been the go-to,” Willis says of cannabis’ place in the band’s creative process. “It’s a stress reliever, a creative little nudge in the right direction, if the right direction is the unknown.” For a band that’s all about being bold musically, that nudge into the unknown is key. Whether it comes from cannabis or from getting lost in the music, 311 fans go on a journey with the band during every concert. “At the end of the day, we’re going to make you sweat and dance if you come to the show,” Willis says. “It ends up being fun because of the audience. They bring the party every time.” 311 Day. March 11-13, 8:30 p.m., Park Theater at Park MGM, $200-$300.

Wrestling legend Rob Van Dam champions healing benefits of cannabidiol

Rob Van Dam has won 21 total championships, and is the only wrestler in history to have held the WWE Championship, ECW World Heavyweight Championship, and TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

Dam, is highlighted by not only numerous championship wins, but also his participation across multiple global brands in epic matches that would become as legendary as Michael Jordan’s “Flu Game.” As of this moment, Van Dam, 49, is the only wrestler in history to have held the respective World Heavyweight Champion titles of WWE, Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and Total Nonstop Action (TNA). Staying true to his title of “The Whole F***ing Show” even to this day, Van Dam has consistently proven to be one of history’s most entertaining, acrobatic and hardcore wrestlers. His illustrious career in the ring all started as a plant in the audience of a 1987 WWF show in his hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan. A 16-year-old Van Dam was paid $100 to kiss the foot of iconic wrestling villain Ted “The Million Dollar Man” DiBiase. With a persona as an aristocratic millionaire, DiBiase wanted to prove that “everyone has a price,” so he gave the energetic teenager a $100 for the task and Van Dam excitedly accepted. Harnessing a combination of that first appearance, his childhood desire to become a championed professional wrestler, and hobbies in martial arts and kickboxing, Van Dam pursued his dream upon graduating from high school in 1989. Martial arts turned out to be a gateway to wrestling superstardom for Van Dam when he joined the Lansing-based Big Time Wrestling brand owned by Edward “The Sheik” Farhat, a wrestling titan who was later inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. During this time, Van Dam wrestled across the Midwest and Northeast, starting with his first match in Toledo, Ohio. During the 1990s, Van Dam’s popularity and success as a professional wrestler skyrocketed. In 1991, he joined Jerry Jarrett’s Nashville-based United States Wrestling Association and World Championship Wrestling soon after. By 1998, the same year that a seven-year-old version of myself would see him wrestle live in Houston’s Astro Hall, ECW World Television Champion Van Dam had gained the persona of a stoner with a number of cannabis references throughout his appearances despite not trying cannabis until he was 21 years old. During an ECW show in Queens that same year, Van Dam noticed a fan holding a sign that said “RVD 420,” much in the same vein as Texas hero “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s “3:16” mantra. Whereas “Austin 3:16” meant “I just whooped your ass,” RVD 420 carried the definition of “I just smoked your ass,” a blatant reference to the plant he clearly had become associated with. Moreover, one of his signature moves was titled the 420 Leg Drop and Van Dam humorously admitted that cannabis was certainly a prominent part of his personal life as well. “I was known to partake in the parking lot with other

long with the National Football League and National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment has a reputation as one of the hardest hitting leagues in professional sports. And just like the NFL and NHL, an increasing number of retired professional athletes are being diagnosed either while alive or posthumously with serious medical conditions that come from years of performing the exciting and sometimes extreme stunts and physical feats that put the entertainment into WWE. The physical shape a growing number of professional wrestlers are in upon retirement isn’t a healthy one. Injuries abound, from career-ending neck or spinal injuries that result in decades of pain to the associated traumatic brain and skeletal injuries incurred from jumping off a 20-foot Hell in A Cell into one or possibly more tables. When examining chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) alone, the number of diagnoses is astounding and frankly horrifying. In 2017, a class action lawsuit was filed in Connecticut against the WWE by more than 50 former wrestlers. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claimed the many traumatic brain injuries received during their matches in the WWE have resulted in debilitating conditions and even the deaths of some of the plaintiffs themselves, most notably wrestling legends Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Chris “King Kong Bundy” Pallies. While the lawsuit was eventually dismissed by the presiding judge, its implications are still notable. Professional wrestling, even with the action-packed excitement and personal childhood memories that the sports entertainment genre has provided for millions throughout the world, can be equally as dangerous and physically taxing as football and hockey. Similarly, wrestling has resulted in a number of former athletes with one or more chronic or degenerative conditions resulting from their tenure in the squared circle. In the same vein as former athletes from the NFL and NHL, a handful of former wrestlers have come out in medical support of a plant that is widely prohibited throughout most professional sports leagues. A prime example is a wrestler/ cannabis advocate who, if you followed his career and the many inclusions of cannabis into his wrestling persona, shouldn’t be too surprising. The 30-year career path of professional wrestling superstar Rob Szatkowski, better known by his ring name Rob Van

wrestlers or fans who would bring flower and I thought standing up for marijuana would be the perfect fit,” recalls Van Dam. “It’s something I enjoy doing and through opening up about it, pretty soon I’m doing an interview with High Times magazine in 1998 and that’s where I really knew I was crossing a line with it.” For a professional wrestler who travels over 300 days a year and regularly has to entertain crowds of thousands, life can occasionally be stressful. “Everything negative, whether my stomach is upset or I’m anxious about the crowd or match, it changes your spiritual vibration,” shares Van Dam. “Your spirit vibrates and it effects the way you feel and how other people perceive you. Cannabis allows for those distractions to step to the side and allows me to raise my spiritual vibration. The higher vibration that I have, the better me I am.” Although his fellow wrestlers advised him against being so publicly in favor of legalizing a stigmatized plant and that he should keep his marijuana usage and viewpoints in his private life, Van Dam was as public about cannabis and hemp as Snoop or Willie have ever been. “It became something I never shied away from because I’ve always believed in the benefits of the plant itself. Holy crap, it could help so many people,” he implores. Yet, his open love of a plant still very prohibited didn’t go without punishment. Most notably, Van Dam was arrested in 2006 for possession of 19 grams of marijuana after speeding through a traffic stop in southern Ohio, a low-level charge that is currently legal in a quarter of the United States. Still though, this arrest occurred while RVD was holding the titles of WWE Champion simultaneously with the ECW Championship. Due to the backlash from the arrest and subsequent action from WWE, RVD had to drop both titles. “I wasn’t that apologetic though,” Van Dam admits, “because I realized this is how we’re going to change laws. People like me, people like Michael Phelps being associated with marijuana and being successful athletes at the same time.” Even through that, Van Dam has remained as strong of an advocate for cannabis as he is in the ring. During the countless interviews he’s done over the decades for publications that range from Wrestling Inc. to The Washington Post, RVD has touted the medicinal benefits that he and several of his fellow

wrestlers have received from the plant. In 2009, Van Dam served as a keynote speaker for NORML’s National Conference in San Francisco and appeared on MSNBC’s program “Morning Meeting” to debate cannabis legalization with former Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Barry McCaffrey. However, as anyone with a basic understanding of human physiology would imagine, 30 years of performing Rolling Thunders and Five Star Frog Splashes among other high-flying stunts haven’t been the easiest on Van Dam’s body. “As a professional wrestler, I’ve had over 500 concussions. I used to think it was just part of the job and none of us understood the concussion damage until we got educated on it,” says Van Dam. Van Dam’s struggles with lasting concussion conditions particularly during 2016 and 2017 was documented in “Headstrong.” The 2019 documentary directed by Joe Clarke details Van Dam’s foray into stand-up comedy which is interrupted by severe concussion-related medical issues and concerns that he may have acquired CTE, the same condition that many athletes are now struggling with following retirement from physically intensive sports. ““Headstrong” is very relative to the reason why I wanted to look into CBD products and in particular, something for the brain,” explains Van Dam. “Although I don’t have CTE, I’m tired of my friends killing themselves over depression they got from acquiring several concussions so I wanted to do something that would help all of us.” In the eight years since cannabis was first recreationally legalized in Colorado and Washington state coupled with the emergence of CBD’s popularity, the emerging topic of professional athletes using cannabis is the very topic that eventually led Van Dam to use his clout in both professional wrestling and cannabis culture to create a spot for himself within the CBD industry. “They’re already talking baseball and allowing the players to use cannabis. The NFL is talking about utilizing CBDs to help with concussions and head trauma, and that’s something that motivated me to start my own CBD line,” he explains of premiering his CBD brand RVDCBD at the 2019 CBD.io trade show and convention held in Las Vegas last fall. “I’ve never been part of a project that’s had such good energy,” Van Dam states of RVDCBD. “The entire cannabis industry is welcoming us with open arms to an extent that I couldn’t have predicted. They tell me that what I’m doing is such a great thing by coming out as a professional athlete and helping out other athletes learn what they can do for longevity and quality of life.” Made using a whole plant approach including extraction from stems and leaves, the RVDCBD product line has a CBD oil tincture and topical cream each containing 3000 milligrams of cannabidiol (CBD). With RVD’s input into the development of the products, he made sure a generous amount of menthol was added to the muscle and joint relief topical to mimic

Cannabinoids play essential role in keeping endocannabinoid system in balance

C

By Justin Alexander

annabis holds one of the keys to keeping the body functioning properly. There are many cannabinoids that make up the cannabis plant and play an integral role in keeping the body’s endocannabinoid system [ECS], or the body’s self-regulation system, in homeostasis. “By introducing cannabidiol [CBD] and other cannabinoids into our body to stimulate receptors, we get reacquainted with our natural state of balance. Cannabinoids are part of a greater whole that helps your body heal itself,” explains Serjio Gutierrez, founder of Vida Flor Hemp. “Think of cannabinoids as activation switches that amplify your own healing responses within. These cannabinoids [CBD, THC, CBG, CBN and more] work synergistically with each other and your body—working in unison to promote a higher state of healing.” All of this is key to a properly functioning ECS. “It’s important to remember that our bodies don’t stop functioning when we go to sleep, our bodies go into a state of repair when at rest. The endocannabinoid system [ECS] is a network of receptors that are vital to our healing process. CBD and other cannabinoids interact with our bodies in a variety of ways,” says Gutierrez. One way is assisting in keeping your ECS in check. “The ECS focuses on two areas: the firing of brain cells in the nervous system, and the inflammatory response of the immune system,” says Manny Meza, Planet 13’s marketing coordinator. “The body is very particular in how it wants its cells and systems performing at a certain regulation to make sure everything runs smoothly. Without proper regulation, someone might have chronic inflammation and a very poor immune system that leads to an array of harmful consequences.” With that in mind, in this month’s review we have compiled a variety of products from Nevada’s cannabis marketplace that have been developed to do a body good.

CANNA FUSED RELIEF ELIXIR For holistic relief, one product to reach for is Canna Fused’s Relief tincture, a 1:1 CBD to THC blend that is taken orally via a dropper. “When you have THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids working together you create what is called the entourage effect. This can yield a better result in terms of wellness,” says Hailey Stone of The Apothecarium. Created with health and wellness in mind, Canna Fused’s Relief tincture is just one of many different blends of terpenes and cannabinoids that produce a specific experience—other varieties are Calm, Sleep, Euphoria and Focus. And because of the 1:1 ratio, these products are typically known for anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects. “This ratio can be a good starting point

for many due to the multitude of conditions it may help with minimal impairment,” says Stone. Backed with ingredients that promote wellness, Stone points out that THC can help with nausea and relaxation and CBD is helpful with inflammation. “This tincture also has cannabigerol [CBG], which is a less common cannabinoid. In some research it has been said to be good for reducing intraocular pressure which could be effective for a glaucoma patient,” Stone says. This demonstrates how important the endocannabinoid system is to overall health. “The ECS is the reason some of us experience euphoria and others find relief but the main goal of the ECS is to bring our bodies back to homeostasis when we’re out of whack,” Stone says.

KABUNKY’S TINY TIN

There is nothing quite as soothing as cannabis in edible form and Vert’s Trinity Dark Chocolate indica diamonds are the perfect treat to deliver a full body wellness journey. Longer lasting than traditional cannabis candy and with a low amount of sugar at only 1 gram per 10 mg dosage these are very effective sleep aides and pain relievers. “Although low in sugar, the taste of our Belgianmade dark chocolate is still rich and creamy making them the perfect post-dinner treat before bedtime,” says NV Sales Manager Margaux Hansberry. “Not only does cannabis help with general mood enhancement, but a recent study by the University College London has found dark chocolate contains psychoactive ingredients that contributes to euphoria. The study suggested the neuromodulator phenylethylamine found in dark chocolate helps contribute to decreased symptoms of depression.”

A big sativa in a tiny package—Kabunky’s Tiny Tins are designed with moderation in mind. The brand’s most popular strains are prepared in ½-gram pre-rolls with five pre-rolls per tin. This is an easy and effective way to promote wellness wherever you go. “The beauty of offering multiple strain types is that people can tailor their canna-wellness habits to their preferred cannabinoids and terpenes,” says Nevada MMJ’s Josh Ranck. “This product was developed with daily wellness habits in mind. By reducing the average size of the one-gram pre-roll, users can dose as needed. Not only do they not have to worry about rolling their own, they don’t have to extinguish and re-light a full one-gram pre-roll when managing their dose. “While CBD has gotten most of the attention lately, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and even the essential oils and lipids found in the plant all have the potential of increasing the effectiveness of our endocannabinoid system. We’re very excited to see the plant science unfold in the coming years,” Ranck says. For instance, caryophyllene, effective for combating pain and inflammation, is a dominant terpene common in Kabunky’s Orange Zkittlez and Fire OG strains. Ranck recommends testing a variety of different strains to see what is best for your overall wellness and well-being. “It’s up to the individual to find the cannabis compounds that give them the relief they’re searching for. If you already know the compounds that work best for you, great—if not, explore different options. Try strains with different terpene and cannabinoid profiles until you come across the ones that give you the results you’re looking for,” he says.

Trinity Dark Chocolates are infused with Fire OG, a powerfully euphoric indica perfect for stress relief and unwinding after a long day. They are individually wrapped so melted chocolate is no longer a messy issue that decreases consistent dosing.

HUXTON’S ZEN PRE-ROLLS, FLOWER ONE All-flower blends of cannabinoid and terpene entourages, Huxton’s Zen pre-rolls were developed with effect goals that include help with loss of appetite, difficulty falling asleep, and anxiety. “The genetics in each of our products are hand-selected for their effects, which are the result of great cannabinoid profiles,” says Christine Vanover, brand manager for Flower One Holdings Inc. “We believe in the full profile of cannabinoids, and not prioritizing any single cannabinoid as the main driver of value. If new genetics become available to us, we have no problem iterating and upgrading to assure our products are achieving what they’re designed to.” Huxton’s main goal as a company is to help patients achieve personal wellness and they speak to that with both their product development and consistency. “Huxton goes a step further by sharing our belief that the best form of wellness is found in our good times. We design our products to the experience they bring so it’s easy to understand how your good times can be brought about or complemented with an effect that’s meant to pair,” Vanover says. “Our products ‘work’ when people find a new grasp on what motivates their interests and happiness about the world. In a word, our products help with control, and we’re proud of that.”

PLANET M’S CBD:CBN 3:1 NIGHTTIME TINCTURE The time we sleep is the most important eight hours in our day. It is the biggest factor in any wellness plan because fatigue and cloudy thoughts make easy tasks into difficult ones. “For plenty of people, sleeping is not as easy as closing your eyes. It takes hours of tossing and turning to finally fall asleep and for many they do not stay asleep,” explains Manny Meza, Planet 13’s marketing coordinator. Providing both the rich benefits of CBD and CBN, as well as affording users a restful night of sleep, the 3:1 CBD/CBN Nighttime Tincture, with 300 mg of CBD and 100 mg of CBN, is a miracle worker designed specifically to induce a good night’s sleep consistently. Containing 0 percent THC and using lavender essential oils to give proper ZZZs—one serving contains 10mg of CBD and 3 mg of CBN. “This Nighttime tincture can make all the difference in someone’s sleep schedule to finally be able

KYND BALM Created to offer pain relief for skin, joint, and muscle issues, KYND balm has a potent blend of 17 individual ingredients, including arnica oil for inflammation, shea butter for moisturizing, and argan oil for its essential nutrients and skin-boosting benefits. “Every ingredient was chosen specifically for its medicinal and therapeutic properties and expertly blended with premium cannabis oil to create an effective balm,” says KYND’s David Robison. Proven to combat inflammation, there is no shortage of anecdotal evidence relating to its relief properties. You can use on your temples and back of the neck to address headaches, or on the abdomen for menstrual pain. Try it on aching knuckles and knees or dry, irritated skin too. In addition to a high level of limonene, KYND’s Balm contains a 2:1 mix of CBD:THC. “By providing CBD and THC in ratio, both the CB1 and CB2 receptors are being activated to provide relief from inflammation at point of contact,” Robison says.

to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for a day with energy,” Meza says. “This product will aid in relaxing the body of pain and aches while also minimizing the anxiety and/or stress that will lead the user to sleep through the whole night restfully.” The cannabinoids included in this tincture create an entourage effect that binds with the cannabinoid receptors to act as a neuroprotectant. “This is how CBD and CBN can interact with the brain to help regulate mood, memory, pain sensation, appetite, and overall wellness,” Meza says. The high content of CBD and CBN will aid with many different ailments such as arthritis, epilepsy, pain relief, anxiety disorders, cancer-related symptoms, fibromyalgia and many more. Symptom relief includes antiinflammatory, anti-nausea and anti-anxiety properties. “CBN has been found to be a powerful sedative, an antibiotic, and a pain reliever. Combining both of these cannabinoids is what makes it effective with sedating the body and providing all the medical properties to achieve better sleep and overall wellness,” Meza says. “It is also effective with pain relief that will in turn make it useful for sleep. With better sleep, the body will have a better immune system and the brain’s cognition will be more productive to make concentration easier.”

comfortable and functional high that is great for outdoor activities. “We designed this product for recreational use and soon after, our customers reported their love for using this strain before and during physical activity,” says Floravega’s Sam McAdam. “It is known to enhance workouts and has been reported to create a better mind to muscle connection.” 13Gorillas provides the energy of a sativa without inducing anxiety or paranoia. It’s a great daytime medication for symptom relief without sedation and appetite stimulation which comes in handy when it’s time to refuel. “THC is the primary cannabinoid in this flower. Accompanied by terpenes of pinene and caryophyllene, 13Gorillas is able to provide mental focus and antiinflammatory physical properties,” McAdam says.

VIDA FLOR, BOOMER NATURAL WELLNESS

KYND all-natural cannabis products are specially formulated to provide premium healing on an elevated level.

BEKYND

Keep out of reach of children. For use only by adults 21 years of age and older.

Vida Flor was designed with wellness in mind, especially when you are looking for more natural relief compared to prescription medications. “We recently introduced a Vida Flor Blends line so now you can smoke a blend of hemp CBD with lavender for more of a relaxing effect and a blend of hemp CBD with St. John’s Wort for more of a focused effect,” says Serjio Gutierrez, founder of Vida Flor Hemp. The goal was to create products that are safe, legal and lifechanging. “We decided to focus our efforts into a product that you can smoke and receive a more direct effect of CBD and other cannabinoids. Our Hemp CBD blunts are made with top quality flower. There are no seeds, no stems and we avoid any biomass or shake at all costs,” says Gutierrez, who adds Vida Flor blunts are wrapped in natural hemp with a hemp wick which provides a cleaner smoke without the worry of inhaling butane from a lighter or sulfur from matches. Hemp CBD Blunts put the mind and body in a relaxed and aligned state, allowing the body to repair itself in a heightened state of calm. “Hemp acts as a bronchodilator opening the airway passages and aids in respiratory health. Smoking Hemp is one of the fastest delivery systems to get CBD and other cannabinoids into your circulatory system,” says Gutierrez, adding that stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, allergies, pain, inflammation, brain fog, sleep disorders, nicotine withdrawal, OCD, tension and migraines all melt away. “Our Hemp CBD Blunts make a great alternative to smoking nicotine cigarettes as well. Smoking hemp is not addictive or habit-forming and may help kick that need for nicotine.”

Let’s talk cannabis.

I Puff Tuff goes to the core

elevatenv.com | march

Exercise mantra builds strength and bulk while losing negative stigma by Beth Schwartz One of the more prevalent myths that seems to cling to cannabis like muscle to a tendon is that smoking marijuana makes you lethargic and lazy. Sure, that’s a possibility. If you smoke an indica, then you’re probably “in da couch” for the duration. But if instead you reach for a sativa or hybrid, chances are you become focused, alert and have unlimited energy to get plenty done whether that involves an exercise routine or just ticking things off your to-do list. Joe “Niz” Nisivoccia has not only experienced the latter but has turned it into a mantra for his fitness routine. The 32-year-old works out six days a week between an hour and an hour-and-a-half each time and cleverly refers to his zeal for fitness in combination with cannabis as I Puff Tuff. “When I smoke, I am focused on my workout. It [cannabis] really allows me to focus on me and get into my zone. Sometimes I will do a dab in between my workouts and that allows me to just keep going, allowing me to do up to an hour and forty minutes of cardio,” says Nisivoccia, who has always used cannabis as part of his fitness regimen. “Since I was about 17 or 18, I started smoking before my workouts,” explains Nisivoccia. “I used to compete. I did men’s physique. I’ve done three fitness shows, I won first place in two of them. I have smoked heavily before every workout and during my workout. To me it doesn’t affect me any differently to where it makes me lazy or tired, it just more so makes me—it takes that bitching factor out of your head where you put aside internal dialogue

like ‘oh I’m tired,’ ‘I don’t wanna go,’ or ‘I don’t feel like staying.’ You just don’t think about the stuff that you have to do.” Nisivoccia found out firsthand one of the biggest misconceptions about cannabis has allowed him to get in the zone much faster. “A lot of people don’t understand that cannabis is not really something that always puts people down or makes them lazy. A lot of times it helps them focus. I had ADHD when I was growing up to where I had a lot of energy that I didn’t know how to funnel it correctly. Working out gives me that ability to burn off this energy and be more of a focused person to where I can run around all day long and put out fires and solidify sales and build relationships,” explains Nisivoccia, who works in sales for cannabis brands that include Summa, Trust CBD, Virtue and Reina. About a year ago Nisivoccia’s enthusiasm for both working out and cannabis led to his exercise mantra. “I Puff Tuff is a statement where people declare they use cannabis before, during or after their workouts,” he explains. “I just started saying it and then I made an Instagram [ @ipufftuff] for it where I would post my workouts. I was tagging people and they were posting it and it was creating traction.” Over the last several months the I Puff Tuff movement has grown organically without Nisivoccia doing much to foster its viral popularity. “It’s more of a statement of like we aren’t lazy, and I want to break that stigma

that people who smoke are. If you smoke and you work out and you tag it, I repost it. People thought it was catchy. And it just caught on.” It caught on to the point that in September the first I Puff Tuff group hike took place at Red Rock National Conservation Area. “It was a lot of industry people and people who just smoke cannabis. We are all coming together and meeting each other and helping each other,” notes Nisivoccia, who emphasizes, “we are bringing the community together over the common denominator of working out.” In January another group hike was held in Reno. And last month, I Puff Tuff devotees assembled at NuWu Cannabis Marketplace for a cannabis yoga event called Stretch Sesh which involved two 45-minute sessions with a 30-minute break in-between for a trip to the Tasting Room to do a dab and bong rip. Eventually Nisivoccia wants to set up group training sessions that are boot camp style with trainers at parks. But you need not worry if your fitness is somewhat flabby. “The whole thing with I Puff Tuff is I didn’t want to appeal to just super-fit people. If you can roll up a joint and go walk your dog, then you can do I Puff Tuff because you are doing something active. You don’t have to go on a hike or do a super-fit crazy class—just some type of activity. Some people jump rope, some

people like to hike or walk their dog...whatever you want to do as some type of activity that aligns with cannabis is I Puff Tuff. I don’t want it to be anything too intimidating to where you would have a woman not want to try it because she thinks it’s for guys—it’s for anybody who wants to work out and use cannabis to assist them with recovery or pre-workout.” This brings us to another important point about cannabis in combination with exercise that Nisivoccia wants to give strength to. “Cannabis helps someone to focus during their workout and focus is the most important thing when working out. When working out you need mind muscle connection to actually stimulate your muscles properly. “It helps connect a lot of receptors. We all have an endocannabinoid system in our bodies that when we smoke a lot of these receptors are linking to where you are getting better functions throughout your body. So, a lot of times people don’t even know it, but your body is going to operate better with cannabis in it.” As I Puff Tuff gains traction and builds upon itself, be advised Nisivoccia will continue to push his healthy mantra as hard as he pushes himself during his daily cardio routine. “The passion for what I do is like a never-ending gas tank. It’s just never empty because I am just passionate about what I do,” says Nisivoccia. “Now that I am involved in fitness which has always been a huge part of my life and into cannabis too, I’m doing what I am meant to do.”

Cooking Cannabis CELEBRATE NATIONAL Π DAY WITH UBE PIE By chef Jesse Garza Photos by sincity_Crook

28

elevatenv.com | march

National Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 and it not only commemorates a special number, but it also acknowledges the birthday of scientist and mathematician Albert Einstein. Because Pi (π) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter National Pi Day has become a day to celebrate numbers and math. All of the numerical whimsy is often accompanied by pi-centric food items such as pizza pie, fruit pie, and even pot pies. Chef Jesse Garza volunteered to aid elevate readers in observing everybody’s favorite never-ending number by sharing his recipe for Ube Pie. Originally from the Philippines, ube is essentially a bright purple sweet potato with an even sweeter, more mellow taste than its orange relative with a slightly nutty, vanilla taste that is high in healthy carbs, vitamins, fiber and extra-high levels of antioxidants. Cheers to your health and neverending numbers!

UBE PIE (PURPLE YAM) INGREDIENTS 12 ounces (1 1/4 cup) ube halaya (jarred or homemade) 1 teaspoon ube extract 3 cups whole milk, divided 4 egg yolks 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/3 cup cornstarch 1 cup heavy whipping cream

DIRECTIONS: Peel ube and steam until soft. Then mash ube and push through a fine mesh sieve to create ube paste. Add 1 teaspoon of ube extract. This step is laborious and can be completed up to two nights before assembly.

Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, whisk 1-1/2 cups milk, 4 egg yolks, 4 teaspoons of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/3 cup corn starch until smooth. In a saucepan, heat remaining 1-1/2 cups milk and 4 teaspoons sugar until warm. Slowly whisk heated milk mixture into the 4-egg yolk mixture. Return mixture back to saucepan and cook over medium heat. Whisk constantly and the pastry cream mixture will thicken as it cooks. Pour pastry cream into a bowl and mix in ube paste mixture. Chill for at least 4 hours before adding to the crust. Even it out with an offset spatula. To finish off pie, make a whipped cream topping by beating 1 cup heavy whipping cream and 2 Tbsp. of sugar on mediumhigh until soft peaks form. Or you can top ube pie with whatever you desire. Chef Garza used City Trees Blue Agave tincture, black sesame seed ice cream, and coconut cream.

Please remember when cooking with cannabis you are cooking with a medicine and the medicine amount and portions of the food ingested should always be taken into consideration. Always start out with small portions or doses and wait 30 minutes to an hour before eating any additional portions of food that has been medicated.
