In 2013, a fairly famous op-ed piece ran in the New York Times that declared dogs were people. Authored by Gregory Berns, a professor of neuroeconomics at Emory University and the author of “How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain,” it ignited quite a debate. Berns and his colleagues had been training dogs to go in an M.R.I. scanner— completely awake and unrestrained with the goal to determine how dogs’ brains work and what they think of humans. After training and scanning a dozen dogs, Berns’ conclusion: dogs are people, too. Through Berns’ study he found a striking similarity between dogs and humans in both the structure and function of a key brain region: the caudate nucleus. “In humans, the caudate plays a key role in the anticipation of things we enjoy, like food, love and money. Caudate activation is so consistent that under the right circumstances, it can predict our preferences for food, music and even beauty,” wrote Berns in the Times piece. The neuroeconomics professor goes on to conclude: In dogs, they found that activity in the caudate increased in response to hand signals indicating food. The caudate also activated to the smells of familiar humans. And in preliminary tests, it activated to the return of an owner who had momentarily stepped out of view. Do these findings prove that dogs love us? Not quite. But many of the same things that activate the human caudate, which are associated with positive emotions, also activate the dog caudate. Neuroscientists call this a functional homology, and it may be an indication of canine emotions. It's fascinating to consider, which brings me to my point. If dogs are people, it would make sense that they would react to cannabis much like humans. We already

know dogs have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which means their bodies can become out of balance just like ours. This means when their ECS is off or not in homeostasis, they can get sick, anxious or susceptible to ailments and diseases just like we do. So, to find out dogs may have emotions adds another layer to the debate about giving them cannabis to calm their anxieties when they see their pet parent packing for a trip or when fireworks start inexplicably going off all around them. In my story, “Calming Canines with Cannabis,” I interviewed Dr. Lukina Burks, owner of Companion Animal Rehab Plus and a relief veterinarian for the Animal Foundation, who treats dogs suffering from social anxiety, separation anxiety, stress, and canine noise aversion using a hemp derivative of CBD or cannabidiol. “I have my pet patients on CBD in general because I do rehabilitation and physical therapy so a lot of my clients have anxiety or pain. I try to slowly taper them off of Western medicine and try to do more through acupuncture and herbal medication and most are on a hemp derivative of CBD whether it’s for osteoarthritis or for separation or social anxiety,” explains Dr. Burks. “It works so well for stressful situations. I have their pet parent give them a calm and quiet treat 30 minutes before I come and it’s like a brand-new dog. I can do all of my physical therapy, acupuncture, everything I need to do with the animal.” Hmmmm...that reaction to CBD sounds familiar. Maybe people are more like dogs than I thought.

CANNABIS CINEMA:

THE BLUEBERRY FARMER THE FRUITS OF HIS LABOR MAKE HIM EVERYONE’S FAVORITE FELON

6

elevatenv.com | june

by Josh Bell

“I knew immediately that man had a story that needed to be told,” says Valerie Whitcomb of her first encounter with Bernie Ellis, the subject of her documentary feature The Blueberry Farmer. The Tennessee-based musician and filmmaker had never made a feature film before, but when she heard Ellis speak at a meeting of the progressive Indivisible movement in 2016, she decided immediately that she had to get him on camera. Ellis had garnered some local press when his farm outside Nashville was raided by police in 2002, and later when he was sentenced to time in a federal halfway house, all for growing cannabis plants he used for his own medical needs and to help people suffering from AIDS, cancer, and other illnesses. Ellis had lived on the farm for decades, throughout his career as an epidemiologist, studying the AIDS epidemic, substance abuse and other public health issues, often pioneering programs to combat those problems at the state and federal levels. Providing cannabis to those in need was an extension of his work improving public health, but the 2002 raid put an end to that, setting off years of struggle in which Ellis had his career, his freedom, and parts of his land taken away.

“He was a graduate from Vanderbilt, he was an epidemiologist with the CDC, and he was making good money every year,” Whitcomb explains. “And then he went from that to literally nothing. Can’t find a job, lost his career entirely, and on food stamps because he’s literally hungry.” Ellis returned to his farm after serving his sentence, and he shifted his focus to the blueberries and other fruits he’d been growing as a side project, building a new small business delivering produce to local restaurants and offering visitors the chance to pick their own berries on his farm. Whitcomb’s film finds Ellis upbeat and optimistic, even as he recounts the years-long ordeal of his legal case. The bearded, gregarious Ellis sits on a porch swing or stands next to his crops, the very image of the rural farmer. “Bernie’s personality is great for stuff like this because he’s a talker,” Whitcomb says. “All I had to do was turn on the camera, and let’s go.” It’s easy to sympathize with Ellis, and it’s also easy to admire him for the patience and fortitude he demonstrated as his case dragged on for years. Instead of carrying around anger or bitterness, Ellis channeled his frustration into activism, and Whitcomb’s film shows him advocating for medical cannabis (which remains illegal in Tennessee), speaking at political rallies

and petitioning for the return of his voting rights (which he lost when he was convicted of a felony). “He has very strong political beliefs. I admire that about him,” Whitcomb says. “He’s right down the line with what he believes, and he doesn’t have any qualms about walking the walk.” Ellis’ story has only gotten timelier since Whitcomb started working on her film, and she hopes that the movie can inspire more activism and lead to real progress. “When we started this, the conversation really about cannabis was not going on in the country,” she says. “It was just at the start of the line.” Now, laws continue to change, and The Blueberry Farmer is one of many documentary films and series that explore the history and culture of cannabis. “I wanted to tell [Bernie’s] story because I wanted people to see what was happening to an individual—using one person as an example of how screwed up our drug laws are,” Whitcomb says.

Ellis’ efforts to influence medical marijuana laws in Tennessee also ultimately stalled, at least for now. “[Bernie] had a whole plan mapped out, and he had a legislator that was working with him to write the legislation,” Whitcomb says, but that bill was just one of several that have failed to move forward in Tennessee. “They’re not going to do recreational around here for a long time,” Whitcomb scoffs. “You talk about the Bible Belt—this is the buckle.” In the meantime, though, The Blueberry Farmer continues to reach new audiences, and Ellis continues to work on his farm. Whitcomb hopes for a hometown screening at the Nashville Film Festival in October, and the movie is already an official selection of the online Hollyweed Film Festival, whose top prize is the chance to smoke a joint with Tommy Chong. “If I win that, I’ll send Bernie,” Whitcomb laughs. “He would enjoy that.”

The Blueberry Farmer is available on DVD and digital download via theblueberryfarmer.com.

june | elevatenv.com 7

Whitcomb raised more than $8,000 on Kickstarter to fund The Blueberry Farmer, and the movie has played in a handful of film festivals so far, as well as at private screenings. “I was very honored that so many people stepped up, some in a big way, and really got behind the project,” Whitcomb says. “I'd like to continue to push The Blueberry Farmer as far as it can go. That’s my main goal, for people

to see it, and maybe take something away from it about the subject.” Although the movie explores the idea of Ellis running for office, Whitcomb says that he’s dropped that plan. “He’s slowing down a little bit, and I think he’s thinking about his retirement, because it’s an awful lot of work that he does out there,” she explains.

Finding bridal cannabliss at wedding expo where “green” is the theme By Josh Kasoff

o simultaneously get a deeper understanding of the potential uses of cannabis at weddings while also giving my mother the false hope that I’d be interested in tying the knot soon with someone that isn’t Gal Gadot, I attended Las Vegas’ inaugural Cannabis Wedding Expo (CWE) where I was awestruck at the scope of businesses hawking their products and services. In late March MEET Las Vegas opened its doors to several hundred attendees, a decent chunk being engaged couples, and close to 50 different companies and freelancers vying for new wedding clients. From photographers and interior event designers to catering companies, florists and wedding venues, every traditional wedding-related business was present with the majority employing a clever cannabis twist to the otherwise normal wedding concept. “It’s a really eye-opening experience going to the Cannabis Wedding Expo to see the elegance in which cannabis

is being presented. All the creativity and incorporation, whether that be internally or externally,” explains Philip Wolf, CWE co-founder. For every conceivable product and service that would be necessary for a traditional wedding, CWE vendors had a cannabis or hemp-centric version. The inaugural Las Vegas expo proved that from couture hemp wedding dresses created by Southern Oregon-based Cannaflage Designs to stunningly gorgeous centerpieces which double as a high-class bong courtesy of My Bud Vase to save-the-dates and invitations by KushKards, there is no wedding-related matter that couldn’t be handled magnificently—all while having subtle references to Snoop Dogg’s favorite plant. “From a societal standpoint, people want options. And people are starting to feel obligated to have a cannabis option at their wedding for their guests because that fits more with their lifestyle. I think we’re at the point of making it trendy to have cannabis at weddings,” observes Wolf.

GIVING NEW MEANING TO A GREEN WEDDING After years of consulting for cannabis cultivation companies in Colorado, Cultivating Spirits founder Philip Wolf conceived the idea for a cannabiscentric wedding expo. The idea bloomed from a conversation with a friend who constructs cannabis bouquets who would either be flat out rejected from traditional wedding expos or have to pay astronomically more for a booth to show her merchandise. Outraged by this blatant discrimination, Wolf and said friend created the full-fledged wedding expo in September 2015 with its all-encompassing theme that was sure to raise some eyebrows while concurrently reddening eyes. Their vision for CWE was a multi-city touring expo that would stay true to the staples of a more traditional wedding expo but showcase vendors who’ve cleverly incorporated cannabis into their products and/or services designed for the happiest day of a couple’s life. Booths would consist of stunning floral displays interspersed with delicious samples of delectable cuisine and enough sweet desserts to skyrocket your blood sugar to the stratosphere. All while weed Instagram influencers, strutting bouquet-in-hand across the expo floor, would show off full bridal makeup and wedding dresses.

BUDDING LOVE Even without cannabis-centric wedding expos, cannabis inclusions and uses in weddings has become increasingly mainstream in nearly every aspect of the wedding planning process with the weakening of both cannabis laws and associated stigmas. Although Jackie Plummer, co-owner of cannabis wedding planning company Elevated Engagements, notes that one of the most, if not the most, common roadblocks facing cannabis weddings is the lack of venues willing to allow the use of cannabis on premises because of the space’s legal grey area. But even absence of venues, the amount of possible inclusions of cannabis in any wedding is still vastly numerous as evidenced by the vendors showcasing their wares and services at CWE. “Starting with the getting ready aspect, what we’ve done is created little party favors for inside of the suite in which they (the wedding parties) are getting ready. We have little groomsmen and bridal party boxes usually with a joint among other items that they can consume privately as opposed to outside,” details Plummer. “For the bridesmaids, we have cannabis bouquets. A lot of the brides have requested that different types of cannabis be used in the actual flowers in their dressing rooms and as part of their corsages.” As for wedding reception possibilities, according to Plummer, without exception one of the most popular is “bud bars.” “Clients have an option to choose the different styles of cannabis that they want present, from the actual flower to edibles to concentrates and CBD,” she says. “It would be four different bars and within those bars, they (the clients) would specify what types of product and we then offer different types of options within that category.” Plummer explains that bud bars operate in the same sense as an open bar, in that the client purchases their respective cannabis products beforehand and are allowed to keep whatever is left over. She also shared that, to stay in accordance with the wedding theme, clients usually personalize their products based on either the colors or the imagery of the theme. “If they have a theme or coral or pink, we can get joint papers to match those colors,” says Plummer, who also mentions medicated chocolate fountains as another example of a popular cannabis-related spin on a traditional wedding food that’s become ever more common.

Although this particular expo occurred in the Silver State, the influence of our much more populated, kale-eating and higher tax-paying neighbors to the west was evident. The Golden State represented heavily that Sunday afternoon with vendors that included everything from LA-based Babinka Treats with its decadent array of exquisitely crafted and infused wedding cakes of every style to the Flower Daddy, a full-service cannabis wedding planning and hosting company out of Hollywood whose services extend across both Northern and Southern California. The appropriately named cannabis florist Bitchin’ Bouquets also calls SoCal home as does San Diego’s Southern Girl Sweets’ with its signature Red Velvet Cupcakes. Wolf also mentioned that the Cannabis Wedding Expo received arguably the highest honor in the cannabis community, a visit from cultivation royalty. “We had a lot of people come down from Humboldt and Mendocino (counties) which is nice to get the support from people who were really the backbone of this plant for such a long time,” reveals Wolf. Other parts of the U.S. were also represented at CWE. “We had Beetlebug, a flower company from New York City. They see how the cannabis industry is going to be out there soon, so they came out and vended,” explains Wolf. The

aforementioned My Bud Vase’s headquarters isn’t located anywhere remotely near a recreationally legal state, with their hometown being Charleston, South Carolina. Terpene-infused Kush Candles and the completely customizable Dry Hollow Cache smokebox company are both from Colorado while Blue Dream Brides is stationed in Mesa, Arizona. “This is the forefront of a huge unveiling of different opportunities and I compare it to alcohol in that alcohol started with one way and now we have mixologists doing tricks and specialties. We have the same capabilities in the cannabis industry to take it to that level as well. With the right education and the right marketing, that’s how we’re going to take it to the next level,” explains Plummer. “I think that the education behind it (cannabis) is going to open up a lot of doors for people to at least be able to open their minds or even consider cannabis at their weddings or elsewhere.” Wolf agrees, concluding, “If cannabis can be accepted at weddings, it can be accepted everywhere in my opinion.” Meanwhile I long for the day that a rabbi is equally able to officiate my wedding ceremony and roll a thick joint to smoke as me and my betrothed, outfitted in our hemp suit and dress, respectively, host a reception that includes the throwing of a cannabis bouquet, a multi-course infused meal, and a bud bar. Now that would be quite a weeding.

June marks the start of summer sun and fun. And, coincidentally, this year marks the 40th anniversary of “Grease”—the musical that starred Olivia-Newton John and John Travolta as seniors at Rydell High that has acquired a nostalgic cult following. We decided to weave all that together for this month’s review and find cannabis products you should consider adding to your vacation packing list for some “summer lovin’.” Whether you are staycationing on the Strip, headed to the beach or camping in the mountains, there are plenty of products that could make your trip more enjoyable. From tasty edibles and smokeables to vapes and topicals, which are especially handy if you have had too much fun in the sun, the Nevada cannabis marketplace has a variety of products to help you relax and make the most of your time off. For this review it looks like vape is the word. “Vapes are a discreet and effective way to medicate,” says Remedy/TerpX’s Randy Villarba. “They are easy to travel with and allow you to be on the go with your medication. No lighters, no additional smoking devices needed.” So go ahead, make the most of those summer nights.

HOT MESS KUSHMETICS’ BAKED AFTER SUN RECOVERY SPRAY, LOTION, FACIAL SERUM AND LIP BUDDER If you sat out in the sun for just a little too long, reach for Baked After Sun Recovery products by CBD-rich brand Hot Mess Kushmetics for relief. “Summer is just around the corner and no matter how much we try to be smart and prevent sunburns, we’ve all been caught with a painful burn…when that happens you want fast relief,” says Hot Mess’s Heather Vanek.

The first thing that will strike you about these beautifully packaged beauty necessities is the fresh scent of tropical fruit. “We use the same fragrance in Baked as we do in our very popular Pineapple Express products,” Vanek says. “We originally wanted to give Baked its own fragrance but despite testing dozens of different scents we just couldn’t find anything that we loved as much as Pineapple Express. So, the two product lines are kind of like sisters.” Even better than that sweet and delightful essence—is what Baked does for the skin. CBD, as we all know by now, relieves pain and inflammation, which makes it perfect for after-sun care. “What most people don’t know, however, is that it’s also a fantastic antioxidant, which means that it will help the skin to heal faster and regenerate the cells while preventing further damage from the sun,” Vanek says, noting this means instant relief and less peeling.

WILLIE’S RESERVE SUPER LEMON HAZE FROM KYND There’s nothing that says summer like a blast in the face of lemony sunshine and that is the best way to characterize the effects of the classic strain Super Lemon Haze—a cross between Lemon Skunk and Super Silver Haze for a tart citrus flavor with buttery notes. “Super Lemon Haze is tasty and potent with a powerful, uplifting, cerebral effect. It’s been beautifully and fittingly described as a soaring sativa—great for daytime use,” says Kynd Cannabis Company’s David Robison. All around this flower offers an uplifting aroma and vibe at 23% THC and primes you for a myriad of fun-in-the-sun activities. Also expect relaxation without the sleepiness. “If you’re after that easy-breezy summertime thing, Super Lemon Haze is a great way to get it,” Robison says. “It’s consistently high in terpinolene, caryophyllene (3.5 mg), and limonene (1.8 mg), so it strikes a great balance somewhere between relaxed and focused.”

FLORAVEGA PINEAPPLE EXPRESS FLOWER

KABUNKY KANNON, #9 STRAIN An epic accessory to any outdoor summertime affair, the Kabunky Kannon gets people talking due to its sheer size. Packing 14 grams of flower into one pre-roll, the sight of this monster joint really sparks curiosity even before you light it up—it is the size of a tall man’s forearm to put things into perspective. According to Nevada MMJ’s Josh Ranck, the Kannon is available in all Kabunky strains, but the most popular is #9 for the ultimate body high. “It's a heavy indica,” he says. “We designed the Kannon with group festivities in mind. This is

Do your summertime activities consist of hikes, cookouts and days by the pool or lake? Then FloraVega’s Pineapple Express flower (28% THC) is the ideal daytime smoke for this season. “It provides an energetic and upbeat buzz that won’t slow users down or knock them out,” says Floravega’s Sam McAdam. A cross between Train Wreck (hybrid) and Hawaiian (sativa), making it a potent sativa dominant hybrid, Pineapple Express tastes like a juicy pineapple with hints of pine and cedar. “Pineapple Express’ effects are not only energizing but long-lasting too, a great choice to enhance activities without compromising productivity,” offers McAdam. While this buzz is enjoyable and upbeat, it is definitely better for focus than relaxation due to a combination of betacaryophyllene (1.61 mg), myrcene (3.21 mg) and limonene (1.97 mg) that give Pineapple Express it’s properties. “While beta-caryophyllene is not known for intoxicating effects, it does boast stress relief properties,” McAdam says. “Myrcene is often associated with ‘couch lock’ and relaxation but when combined with limonene, can provide an uplifting high with pain relief.”

a product meant to be enjoyed with friends and shared on social media. A half-ounce pre-roll is special, unique and should be enjoyed [as a memorable] occasion. This is something you celebrate with.” Just like anything in the summertime, a relaxing smoke session is always best enjoyed with your closest circle and a Kannon is the perfect way to ensure that there is plenty to go around when lounging at the pool. “Many consumers have seen plenty of mammoth joints on the internet, but never in person. It's just a lot of fun,” says Ranck, who recommends Laughing Laughlin for those who want a heady sativa, and for a balanced hybrid, spark up the classic OG Kush.

STATE FLOWER’S 5-PACK, THE APOTHECARIUM When we think about going on vacation, one concern that inevitably arises is how to pack and consume your medicine. State Flower’s convenient pre-rolls are an easy solution. The small matchbook size container holds five pre-rolls with three grams of full flower cannabis in kickback-and-relax strains such as King Louis XIII OG and Super Glue. “When you’re on vacation, it’s difficult to always have an elaborate smoking set up, so when you’re on the go, these State Flower pre-roll packs will be your new best friend,” says the Apothecarium’s Hailey Stone. The strains that are available also pair well with the vibes of a quick beach trip or a last-minute weekend getaway. Take Super Glue, for example, with terpenes of caryophyllene (8.8 mg), humulene (2.2 mg) and myrcene (6 mg), making it great for outdoor activities because it’s not a super heavy hybrid, but it still leaves your body feeling relaxed.

LEAF & VINE STARKILLER CARTRIDGE, PLANET 13 When heading out to the pool to soak up some vitamin D, grab Leaf & Vine’s Starkiller cartridge. Leaf & Vine specializes in premium cannabis concentrates outfitted in a design that is female-forward and discreet— making it the perfect accessory to toss in your pool bag so you can medicate on the go. After a few puffs, you will feel a flood of myrcene (11 mg) and linalool (7 mg) to take you to the next level of relaxation with a THC level of 77%. “It’s the perfect vacation, outdoorsy pen that packs a punch,” says Planet 13’s Brandon Zimmer. “Limonene (25 mg) elevates your

mood giving you pure bliss. The feminine style, plus the relaxing feel, is for any consumer looking for the perfect mixture.” Planet 13 launched Leaf & Vine in April for those looking for a casual cannabis experience—it uses strains with a higher CBD content and is positioned for those seeking a complement to a night out or those who want to spice up a talk session with friends.

NLVO KISS LIP BALM AND GG4, DEADHEAD OG AND WEED BROTHERS OG FLOWER

CITY TREES RELAX CARTRIDGE Nothing quite takes it out of you like a day in the sun, but you can mimic that happy relaxed feeling with a few puffs from City Trees Relax cartridge which tests at 76% THC. Formulated with 100% THC distillate and a proprietary blend of terps, this pocket-friendly gem is a great way to relax and it boasts an earthy taste to match the gems of mother nature.

june | elevatenv.com 17

NLVO considers itself a cultivator of couture cannabis and this summer they have a range of products to complement any outdoor, fun-inthe-sun activity. Starting with a delicate yet important body part that doesn’t get far enough attention: the lips. Lather on some Kiss Lip Balm and keep that dynamic duo protected from sunburn during outdoor activities. Smooth and moist is the name of the game with this 1:1 ratio (THC:CBD) product containing shea butter and nourishing oils. Once those lips are protected, put them to good use on a pipe or bong with NLVO’s Flower One strains. Sales manager Mark Bozza says that GG4 (25% THC), Deadhead OG (30% THC) and Weed Brothers OG (28% THC) are the buds to reach for this summer, each working well with different activities. “GG4 is a perfect hybrid for both outdoor activities and relaxing by the campfire at night, Deadhead OG is great for summertime concerts or shows and can help get a good night sleep under the stars,” Bozza says. “Weed Brothers OG is perfect for daytime hikes or bike rides.” When looking to focus, get creative and be active, reach for GG4 since it is high in limonene for those perfect spurts of ingenious ideas. When it is time to wind down, go for Deadhead OG, which is high in myrcene to bring on peaceful sleep and pinene, and should infuse campfire stories with lots of creativity. Weed Brothers OG proffers limonene and pinene, which serves the perfect mix for outdoor activities or relaxing in a hammock reading a good book.

Imagine you are out for a day of fishing or a hike and are looking for a way to enjoy the scenery even more, that’s when Relax is most handy. “Myrcene (57 mg) and linalool (32 mg) are the main terpenes in this blend. Myrcene is one of the most synergetic terpenes to THC, it is also a sedative and known to ease the symptoms of chronic pain and inflammation,” says City Trees’ Kawehi Galuteria. “Linalool is a common terpene found in household plants like lavender and coriander. It is known for lowering stress levels and combating things like depression and anxiety.”

EFFEX SUPPLY CO.’S X-SHOT When relaxing by the pool, grab an X-Shot to kick your vibe up a notch. X-Shot gives a double shot of euphoria and exhilaration to turn things around when you start to feel sleepy. “The X-Shot combines energy and cannabis in a discreet, handy 10 mg dose. When you mix energy and THC, how could it be anything but fun?” says Effex’s Marc Baldwin of the X-Shot which is a quick, drinkable supplement of cannabis that comes in four flavors: berry, citrus, fruit punch and grape. “These drinks are definitely not relaxing. They are specifically formulated to shift people into a higher focus/ higher performance-driven mindset,” says Baldwin. “The Effex Supply Co. X-Shot helps you concentrate better on [any] activity where you want a little extra zing and focus with your buzz. It’s a little pocket rocket.” This convenient bottle is also perfect to shoot prior to going into the pool or club for a fast way to consume your medicine when smoking is not allowed.

CAMP HAPPY CAMPER CARTRIDGE, THE+SOURCE NV Organic Remedies has just made it easier for your summer to be full of happy campers with the introduction of its Camp Happy Camper cartridge. “Happy Camper is made from Anslinger flower and Grapefruit Durban terpenes for an incredible, fresh-flower flavor,” says Kara Roessner of NV Organic Remedies. “This clean-tasting rosin provides a cerebral buzz that inspires your mind to wander without that heavy body feeling.” When smoking this strain, you get the best of both worlds. After a few inhales, the edge comes off and the mellow comes on but there is no couch-lock, you can still get up, walk around and enjoy your environment. Then comes the enhanced feeling of wellbeing and the ability to ease into the rest of the day’s activities no matter what they may be.

“Thanks to our proprietary process, Camp’s solventless rosin is naturally high in terpenes—nearly three times that of other brands. In Happy Camper in particular, you’ll find high amounts of caryophyllene (66 mg), myrcene (29 mg), and limonene, as well as pinene and linalool. We use only natural, steam distilled terpenes in all our products for a more delicious, robust flavor,” Roessner says.

FLEUR’S ORANGE COOKIES FLOWER

DOGWALKERS, ESSENCE CANNABIS DISPENSARY

19

Inspired by leisurely walks with man’s best friend, Dogwalkers aims to be your trusted cannabis companion by creating products that are consistent, convenient and high quality, enhancing any journey. A favorite for summertime fun is pre-rolls, which they call “sessionable” size. “Dogwalkers pre-rolls exist in a variety of premium, full-flower strains and are never produced using shake, trim or flower blends,” says Brand Manager David Bleicher of the Dogwalker portfolio which is divided into three main categories: “Sit,” “Stay,” and “Play” for indica, hybrid and sativa strains, respectively. “We would recommend our “Play” products to those looking for a little extra “pep in their step” as they look to enjoy all that summer has to offer.” Hendo Cream (21% THC) is a sativa-dominant hybrid so expect to play and stay—a good medicine for anxiety, depression, tension and pain; and the Banana Cream (20% THC) is an indica-dominant hybrid so expect to sit and stay and it also gives a great body buzz.

A cross between orange juice and the renowned Girl Scout Cookies, Orange Cookies is a flavor-packed strain that expresses itself with a strong aroma of sweet citrus that closely resembles a fresh tangerine. Testing at 24% THC, this sativa-dominant hybrid helps you stay focused and relaxed no matter the summertime activity at hand. “I call this our "happy” strain,” says Fleur Cannabis’ Amber Jansen. “The flavors of Orange Cookies give way to deep calming body effects that mingle with a euphoric cerebral buzz to leave you happy and relaxed.” Containing limonene (3.53 mg) for its taste of citrus and high in linalool (2 mg), the terpene that offers relaxation, this strain is good for any time of the day and is the cannabis trifecta: tastes good, smells good, and smokes great.

These handcrafted pre-rolls are a classic delight. Also delightful is the brand’s commitment to giving back to four-legged companions by partnering with deserving animal shelters across the country. “Every year, Dogwalkers donates a portion of proceeds in the state of Nevada to the NSPCA who helps to save the lives of our four-legged friends—through these partnerships, the brand works to make sure more dogs are loved, and walked often,” says Bleicher.

When it gets hot in Las Vegas, we take a blast of cool wherever we can get it, even if it comes in the smokable variety. “Our Sativa Spearmint ISH cartridge by O.penVAPE is a refreshing blast of minty flavor infused into a high potency 82.8% Delta 9 THC distillate oil,” says O.penVAPE Sales Manager Margaux Hansberry. “Imagine how refreshing a mint mojito is when you’re sweating profusely in our 120-degree Las Vegas weather. Everyone loves the invigorating tingle even as an alternative to chewing gum or a breath mint. Just a few puffs will leave your mouth feeling freshly brushed.” With a combination of limonene, linalool, and pinene, the Spearmint ISH takes the edge off and helps you stay alert and energized. “The linalool content in this batch of Spearmint ISH has a calming effect that won’t put you to sleep but is meant more for relaxation,” Hansberry says. “Don’t worry about getting too far from motivated because the limonene and pinene are great at keeping you energized and alert.” This is also an ideal accessory for festival season, keeping you active and minty fresh. “The combination of taste, terpenes and high potency THC combine for a vaporizer experience that uplifts and motivates—great for keeping you on the dance floor or calming anxiety before a first kiss with your summer love,” she says.

Cannabiotix has two suggestions to get the love and happiness flowing this summer: L’Orange flower and Banana Treez shatter. “L'Orange tastes like summer with very happy effects to get out and go hiking and other adventures,” says Cannabiotix’s Megan Little. “Banana Treez Shatter is perfect for sitting by the pool, hanging out with friends.” Originating from Banana OG and Lemon Burst, L’Orange, testing at 21% THC, is a very uplifting high that produces creative effects and has an incredible taste and smell. “L'Orange is definitely better for staying focused and getting things done,” says Little of the terpene rich sativa high in limonene (10 mg), b-caryophyllene (4.7 mg) and linalool (4.1 mg). Banana Treez Shatter, a cross between Oregon Lemon and Orange Crush, by Justin Little takes one of Cannabiotix’s most sought-after strains, which tastes just like Banana Runts candies, and turns it into a high potency concentrate at 81.6% THC. The first hit is strong and deep and will leave you happy and satisfied for hours in a relaxed and calm state from a terpene blend rich in limonene (18 mg), caryophyllene (5.8 mg) and myrcene (3 mg).

INHALE/EXHALE Reader has many questions about safety of giving French Bulldog CBD for hip dysplasia

Dear Reader, I STRONGLY identify with this question. I have a Staffordshire Terrier Pitbull Mix named Madame. She is between 12 and 13 years old. We have been keeping each other company for eight years or so and I could not love her any more than I do. Although Madame is in excellent condition (she has been a regular running, hiking and even bouldering companion for me for a long time) because she is 12, I have been forced to acknowledge that she will not be the Energizer Bunny I’ve been so lucky to have by my side in the past. And, I found out this past year, she has developed a pretty advanced heart murmur due to a degenerative disease affecting her mitral valve. I gave Mad glucosamine chondroitin for years, but eventually, as she got older, she began rejecting her chewables and I decided to see what she was like without the glocosamine (our family’s Golden Retriever responded to GC for sure). I will be honest, I

didn’t see an appreciable difference in the immediate. What I have witnessed though, is that once she hit 11, she began to slow down. More than a mile jog was out of the question. And then I found out she had developed a heart condition. This transition has actually been tough for me. Both Madame’s companionship in general and on adventures in the outdoors has been an aspect of my life that has been very joyful. So, adjusting to life with Madame being older and less mobile has been a process. With that said, it doesn’t feel like what I need to do is pump her full of things to mask any discomfort she has. It feels like I need to respect her station in life (e.g. not expect her to do long hikes or runs in the mountains) and at the same time, see how I can enhance her quality of life so that she is as comfortable and happy as she can be. For Duke, it seems like the situation may be similar. It sounds like you just want him to have as great a quality of life as is possible. And, as much as you are willing to go outside the box and seek “alternative” therapies such as CBD, you are looking out for Duke’s safety and want to make sure you are working with as much information as possible when it comes to making decisions about your dog’s health. This makes you a responsible pet owner and a responsible cannabis consumer. My advice to you is based on both my experience as a pet owner and as a conscious consumer of cannabis. And that is, consider these questions the same way you would for treatments you were investigating for yourself. By that I mean, when you are assessing options outside of those a physician is prescribing, is there a clear ingredient list on the label of whatever you are buying? Are there instructions as to how to consume the product in line with its intended use(s)? Does it specify where the product was manufactured? Does it contain information as to how much of its active ingredients, such

Dear Shoshanna, I have a beautiful 10-year-old French bulldog named Duke who is in constant pain as a result of hip dysplasia. I have heard about CBD and how wonderful it is for canines especially those with chronic pain and arthritis. I would like to give it a try but am very concerned about Duke’s safety. I would like to know about CBD’s side effects and anything else pertinent I need to know such as will Duke get high or become lethargic. Also, how is CBD best administered to a dog: orally, as an injection or as an edible treat. What dosage do you recommend? When can I expect improvement and for Duke to feel better? Finally, I have seen it in dispensaries and online, where do you recommend that I buy from?

as CBD, are present? For me, a brand I feel comfortable experimenting with fulfills all of that. In terms of possible side effects, if you read my column in the May issue of elevate, which explored CBD from every conceivable angle, you know that when you are buying a hemp-based remedy, you are buying a product that is not supposed to contain any more than .3% THC, the cannabinoid that gets you “high.” Further, if you are purchasing anything that is sold as “pure” CBD, the same can be said. That is, if you can trust what the packaging and labeling on a product tells you. How do you know if you can trust this, you ask? Well, to be honest, it’s tough. There are no clear requirements put in place as of yet that forces CBD manufacturers to state all of the criteria I listed above in order to assess the credibility of products we find on the market. We also don’t know if what is on that package and labeling is accurate. We are in an in-between stage where the FDA is on the verge of regulating remedies with CBD in them, including for animals. However, currently, there is no statute holding producers’ feet to the fire. Lots of what is involved here is trusting your manufacturer because you know them, knowing and trusting others whose animals have seen benefits from a product, or trusting the recommendations of your veterinarian, if they are willing to make such recommendations for you. Keep in mind, we are not talking about a veterinarian writing a prescription or “recommendation” for your pet the way physicians in some states have been “prescribing” and “recommending” cannabis to people. That is a different type of process. What we are talking about is finding out if your vet’s office can steer you in the direction of a manufacturer whose products other patients have reported back about positively. While many vets have been reticent to do this in the past for fear of garnering attention for even peripheral involvement with the cannabis industry, the recent de-scheduling of hemp per the 2018 Farm Bill has been shifting this conversation for many who have up until now held off on wanting to outwardly participate in or even endorse the CBD industry. At this point, vets who are not comfortable providing information about or referring patients to others who are knowledgeable about CBD are not doing their patients a service. And when you seek that advice from your vet, you are helping to push forward this conversation on behalf of many animals, not just Duke. For Madame, here’s what I have discovered: she will

typically eat anything, and that has included various CBD treats I’ve offered her over the years. She will consume tinctures, but only the bacon-flavored one so far. A THC-based salve once really helped an inflamed paw. But CBD-only salves I’ve tried have not been overly effective (at aiding in the healing of skin irritations, abrasions, etc.). She does not enjoy smoke of any kind. And wow…we have not had any need for an injection, but again, I would say this is an exciting avenue of medicine to explore, with your veterinarian’s input if that is possible.

Adopt an amazing shelter pet.

Regarding where to make your purchases—I hate to sound like a broken record but consult with your vet or find others in your community who have had success with particular brands and remedies. Do NOT assume that because one person had great results with a certain dosage of CBD for a certain condition in their dog, that that is empirical research you can rely on as a perfect fit for your dog and his or her particular situation. Just like people, there is diversity among animals, and you need to identify brands that you can trust and go from there to find specific treatments and dosages that make a difference in terms

of quality of life. And, know that when you order products online, you have even less of an ability to hold your supply chain accountable. Locally sourced—and licensed—products where the people who manufacture these remedies are known and can respond directly to any of your questions is the kind of operation you ideally want to be transacting with.

CALMING CANINES WITH CANNABIS As fireworks season approaches, CBD could be the answer to alleviating your pet’s anxiety By Beth Schwartz It’s nearly on a daily basis that veterinarian Dr. Lukina Burks is having to school her pet patients’ parents about the perils of cannabis. “Almost daily I’m having this conversation, educating people that their animals can’t have THC, but they can, however, have the hemp derivative of CBD,” explains Dr. Burks, DVM, CVA, CCRT, CVMMP, owner of Companion Animal Rehab Plus and a relief veternarian at the Animal Foundation. “Some people don’t know the difference between THC and CBD and are giving their dogs THC. That tends to have a downside and a horrible effect.”

Certified in physical therapy, acupuncture, rehabilitation and chiropractic medicine for animals, Dr. Burks has been a practicing veterinarian for seven years in Southern Nevada and has seen the growing emergence of cannabis as a treatment option for pets, especially in the last two years. “When I first worked here in Las Vegas I did emergency medicine so I would see a lot of that,” she acknowledges of the confusion surrounding THC and CBD. “So, for the last two years I’ve been trying to educate people on which ones to use with regard to safety and dosages because if we don’t say anything, they tend to go and do the wrong thing.”

Like humans, dogs—or anything with a backbone—have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for creating homeostasis in the body. “Just like in people, animals have this same system and when they stress out it can offset a little bit,” explains Dr. Burks. “So, when we give animals CBD, it acts on the endocannabinoid system we already have, and it helps it to stay balanced.” The endocannabinoid system regulates a lot of basic functions. “CBD works on the receptors in the body effecting pain, inflammation, moods. CBD triggers on these receptors to calm them down,” says Dr. Burks. “The effects of CBD on the endocannabinoid system tries to clear up any imbalance— working on sleep, neurogenesis, immune system, pain perception, mood, their overall well-being—in other words, the body’s ability to maintain a healthy balance.” The other connection with the ECS is serotonin. “In the past veterinarians have been using anti-anxiety medications and things that suppress the serotonin uptake, we have discovered CBD does the same thing but in a safer way,” explains Burks, who treats dogs suffering from social anxiety, separation anxiety, stress, and canine noise aversion. “Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t have that psychoactive effect that makes animals high. CBD calms them and works on the

endocannabinoid system. It actually helps relieve a lot of those stresses that elevate through these anxieties.” Holistic wellness coach and reiki master Melinda Bohlmann gives CBD to her Chihuahua for overall health as well as anxiety. “Chihuahuas are typically easily scared so it does help her with loud noises or fireworks,” says Bohlmann. “When the body is under duress there are certain things that are released in the body and CBD, which is produced naturally by the body, goes to where it is needed. If you have a CB1 or CB2 receptor that’s basically misfiring, CBD will go to that location and correct what’s happening. So, a pet under duress, whether it’s fireworks or thunderstorms, have these enzymes in their body preventing it from working correctly. CBD can fix that.” Beyond stress and anxiety, there are many different conditions and ailments CBD can be used to treat. “Definitely any type of arthritis or inflammation, allergies or if they are recovering from any type of a procedure, even a dental cleaning,” says Bohlmann of CBD’s applications. “CBD also helps with chronic pain, intestinal inflammation, osteo arthritis, neuropathy,” says Dr. Burks, noting, “there’s a plethora of positive aspects of CBD and what it can do for animals. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and is used for seizures. Sometimes they even use it to help with chemotherapy’s side effects like nausea.”

A Dose of Happiness

THC is Highly Avoidable

As for THC, it’s a no-go says Dr. Burks. “No matter what dosage, THC has a psychoactive effect which causes a ripple effect in an animal, they don’t metabolize it well. So, at this point, I say no to THC in animals. It’s just too harsh of a side effect,” she explains. But the vet hasn’t completely given up on it. “I think more research will have to be done on how to dilute that down,” she continues of THC’s effects on dogs. “THC is really potent for them. They are unable to focus, they are extremely high, their blood pressure drops, it can almost kill them if they overdo it. A large breed dog can definitely handle some, but they will still have that high effect and it can get really bad for smaller dogs. It’s out of the question, you can almost kill your dog by giving it THC.” In addition to avoiding THC, there are other ingredients you should definitely not give your pets when shopping for

cannabis products. “If they are going to do a treat, they should make sure the ingredients are okay. I would doublecheck with a holistic vet who is familiar with it to make sure the ingredients are okay,” says Dr. Burks, who recommends treats, topicals and tincture containing a hemp derivative of CBD. “The reason I tell them they need to pay attention to ingredients is because sometimes there are additives that animals are allergic to. It’s the little things they don’t realize they shouldn’t add like artificial flavoring such as grape or the owner tries to make their own treats and puts in Macadamia nuts. Those are things people forget that animals can’t digest properly,” advises Dr. Burks. Bohlmann adds that you have to also be really careful with essential oils. “Some cats are deathly allergic to essential oils even in a diffuser in your home. So, you have to be really aware of what scents are being put out there,” she says. “Also, Xylitol is toxic to pets. It’s a natural sweetener but it’s toxic to animals and it will shut down their organs.” Pet parents should also be sure to check that any products they buy are 100 percent natural and lab tested, soy-free and have no GMOs, instructs Dr. Burks, who recommends Therabis and HempRX as two products that are certified and safe for pets.

Preparing for the Main Event

Dr. Burks advises pet owners to be proactive and start preparing for July 4th ahead of time by desensitizing their animals. “If they are going to try a new medication like CBD or thunder jacket or want to try classical music of some sort, they don’t want to do that the week of or day of because it no longer becomes a normal thing,” she advises. “Whenever you want to introduce something new, you want to do it a month out to see how the animal responds. That way the dog or cat will get used to it and understand that it’s normal behavior. If you introduce these things early on, then that day just becomes a normal day.” As for the day of the event you are preparing for, Dr. Burks recommends having a regular day with your pet but just do any walks or regular activities early in the day. Later in the day, during the fireworks, create a safe place for your pet such as a favorite bed or a nice quiet area where the dog or cat can go and begin the routine you have been practicing. “Sometimes when the dogs or cats are in the midst of the fireworks their owners tend to want to go to them and cuddle them. That makes the dog or cat feel like something is wrong,” explains Dr. Burks. “It’s very important on that day for the owner to look at the animal’s behavior and determine if it wants to be cuddled or held.” In other words, read the body language of your pet and give your dog its day.

june | elevatenv.com 31

As far as dosing CBD, pet owners should talk to a veterinarian with experience in the field before they give it to their animal, advises Dr. Burks. “When it comes to dosing, labeling is important because you have to see the milligrams per ml. Everybody is trying to figure out what is the proper dosage for a specific animal based on their weight, age and what they are dealing with issue wise. That’s the gray area and that’s why veterinarians are having a hard time tapping into the CBD world because weight, age and the symptoms of the animal don’t always agree with what the dose is,” she explains. “So, there is no set formula yet. There is only us weighing the milligrams per ml based on what we see and what has been shown to work in studies and that’s how we calculate what the animal should have.” “It’s trial and error a lot of time,” agrees Bohlmann. “CBD is one of those things where you can’t get too much of it necessarily. If you take too much you may get sleepy or it may not work as well. It’s based on weight, so we always say start low and work up from there and see what works best for your pet. “My 80-lb. dog gets way more than my six-lb. dog,” she notes. “And it depends on the severity of what’s going on. If it’s 4th of July, my little Chihuahua gets a lot more than what she gets on a daily basis just because I know she’s going to be in a stressful situation. I kind of prepare her body for that by giving her a little bit more in the morning and I usually give her some right as the fireworks are starting.” For administering CBD, Bohlmann recommends tincture as the best method. “I would say 98 percent of them will take tincture because, for some reason, they love the taste of it,” she says. “I would not get treats with CBD in it, the minute you bake the CBD you are changing its property so it’s not as effective. I would just buy regular treats and drop CBD on it.”

GETTING OUT OF THE WEED(S) Debunking the hype surrounding CBD and your pet

I

by Cathy Brooks, Chief Human Officer for The Hydrant Club, hydrantclub.com

It sounded too good to be true. Standing in front of me at the 2018 SuperZoo Pet Retail conference was a former military K9 officer who was regaling me, in hyperbolic verse, about the miracles CBD oil had bestowed on his retired military dog. The dog, as most all military and law enforcement K9s, had substantial physical pain and joint issues, wrought by a high intensity job. Only seven years old, the dog had to be picked up and put into the car and then lifted out again. It was also having trouble walking. Attempts to use standard, high-powered, pharmaceutical solutions to alleviate the pain were wreaking havoc on the dog’s kidneys and liver. As the story was told, just a few days on CBD oil, the dog was walking normally. After a few more days the dog was jumping in and out of the car unassisted. He didn’t just tell me stories. He showed me pictures and videos. It was amazing. Transfixed by the possibility, I glanced down at Truman. My just-turned-12 Labrador/Standard Poodle mix had ceased

leaping into the car with joy. He’d never been a particularly bouncy dog, but over the last few months a distinct shift had occurred. He had slowed down, and I could see he was in discomfort. I wanted to avoid putting him on drugs that would have a potentially catastrophic impact on other aspects of his health. I’d been studying the rapidly evolving and expanding world of hemp products, and cannabidiol (aka CBD) in particular, as a powerful asset in the health of dogs and was at SuperZoo specifically to assess options. After months of research and three full days of intense conversations with various vendors, one thing was abundantly clear. There is very little clarity. As of today, there is still no comprehensive, scientific data regarding the efficacy of CBD for dogs (or any pet for that matter). Anecdotal evidence, absolutely. Some small studies and initial data, for sure; but the nascent nature of the market and of the product has, to-date, limited the ability of any group to gather data sufficient to state unequivocally that

Is the CBD product full spectrum or an isolate? To get the full power of the hemp plant’s properties, you need the full spectrum of the plant. That means the entirety of the plant is utilized, each piece serving as a key to unlock each element. On this topic, we need to mention THC. The psychoactive element of the plant, the component that gets you “high” is a delicate matter, because in any substantive amount it is deeply toxic for dogs. Veterinarians have shared with me (again, anecdotally) a rise in pets coming in with THC toxicity. Increased legalization for medical and recreational cannabis use has also resulted in an increase in THC-infused edibles in people’s homes. Where dogs would be unlikely to consume a plant—a bag of cookies, or brownies or gummies capture a pet’s attention and appetite. When it comes to therapeutic CBD products for pets, some claim these products must be entirely THC-free. That is not the case. There will be trace, as in undetectable amounts, in the product as a necessity to fully unlock the true potential and value of CBD. Without it, it’s like having a combination lock but missing one of the numbers. While still nascent, the explosive growth of the pet-related CBD market implies that it is only a matter of time before more substantive data—anecdotal and otherwise—will be readily available. In the meantime, the best judge of how well these products work for your own pet, is you.

CBD absolutely does or doesn’t answer specific health needs for our pets. The best CBD pet products I’ve seen on the market do not promise anything. Their language speaks of “possible” and “potential” benefits. Still with me? Good. Now let’s talk about what we do know. Hemp is among the most versatile and powerful plants known to man; and as noted, while data doesn’t exist, anecdotal evidence does. There is proof of great efficacy on issues from joint and hip pain to injury recovery to arthritis in pets. From overt injuries to relieving discomfort, the highly anti-inflammatory properties of CBD make it a superb augmentation to and, in some cases, replacement for more toxic pharmaceutical solutions. Some groups claim CBD can and should serve as a central solution for pets’ behavioral issues and anxiety. Evidence here is far less clear and also far less consistent. While cases of anxious dogs experiencing a reduction in that anxiety after the use of CBD exist, much like with people, there is no real consistency across those cases. For pets with extreme anxiety/ behavioral issues, you would be more well-served to tackle the issue using modification training and allow CBD to be an augmentation or supporting element. When evaluating CBD products to use for your dog, there are many elements to consider. Here are two major ones: How is the CBD grown and extracted? Hemp is an extremely absorbent plant. That means whatever is in the soil, whatever is used to grow or treat that plant, will end up in the plant and by default its byproducts. For that reason, making sure the hemp is organically grown—pesticideand chemical-free—is crucial. That organic process needs to start with the seed and continue all the way through to how it’s grown and harvested. It’s also important to know how the CBD is extracted. Many extraction processes use chemicals including butane (lighter fluid) or even ethanol to leach CBD out of the plant. That not only means the core product has been exposed to harsh chemicals, it also means the end product will retain some of these toxic elements. If a product is an “isolate” it means even more harsh processing was involved to essentially tear apart the whole spectrum of the plant’s CBD component. Also, worth noting, about 90 percent of CBD isolate products are sourced from China. Brooks (pictured with her pooches) is founder and owner of Downtown Las Vegas’ Hydrant Club.

LEGALEASE

A LOOK AT FEDERAL AND STATE LAWS REGULATING CBD PET PRODUCTS by Derek J. Connor, Esq. & Natice Locke

amounts of THC.8 However, significant restrictions are imposed and hemp remains heavily regulated by federal and state governments.9 Each state is responsible for regulating the sale of pet food. In other words, the state of Nevada must license all manufacturers, distributors, and guarantors involved in the sale of pet food after an application process.10 As of now, the distribution and sale of pet food that contains cannabis is a violation of federal and state law.11 The Nevada Department of Agriculture is the state agency responsible for commercial feed licensing.12 Commercial pet food falls under this category.13 Both the Nevada Department of Agriculture and the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) prohibit the use of cannabis in pet food and animal health products.14 The Nevada Department of Agriculture defers to the policies set forth by the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).15 AAFCO is an association of volunteer local, state, and federal agencies that regulates the sale and distribution of animal feed and health products.16 AAFCO proposes model regulations that individual states may adopt and follow.17 Lawful pet food ingredients must first receive approval.18 Each ingredient in animal feed must be the subject of a food additive petition or generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for the intended species.19 The CVM takes guidance from state regulators and the AAFCO to determine which ingredients are permissible in animal feed.20 For now, the AAFCO does not classify hemp as GRAS, nor is there an approved petition for hemp to be added in pet food.21 More simply, the AAFCO does not allow hemp in pet food, so the FDA and state of Nevada do not either.

Products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are gaining wider acceptance and are growing in popularity across the country. CBD is being offered in a wide range of products such as cosmetics, ointments, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverages. Likewise, CBD enthusiasts rejoiced when the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp. As evidence for the health benefits associated with CBD becomes more accepted, people are looking for ways to implement CBD in their lives. The CBD market has even caught the attention of pet owners, with many looking for ways to provide it for their animals. Although there are several examples of CBD-infused pet products available on the market, the legalities associated with CBD pet products remain challenging. President Trump signed the Farm Bill into law at the end of 2018 which legalized the production and sale of hemp. Overall, the 2018 Farm Bill is a win for cannabis advocates. The 2018 Farm Bill allows for the production and distribution of hemp that contains no more than 0.3 percent THC.1 Although hemp and marijuana belong to the Cannabis family, there are notable distinctions between the two. Generally, there are physical differences between plants used for industrial hemp and those used for marijuana production, but their uses are what primarily set them apart.2 Marijuana contains large amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component responsible for producing the “high marijuana is known for.3 Marijuana is usually smoked, inhaled, or ingested.4 Pet supplements do not typically contain THC.5 Hemp, on the other hand, is produced for more industrial purposes.6 Hemp is capable of producing paper, clothing, building materials, biofuel, and food products.7 Additionally, hemp generally contains higher amounts of CBD and low

On the contrary, pet owners may notice that many CBD pet products are already on the market. This seems to contradict the hemp prohibition imposed by the federal and state government. However, a regulation loophole seemingly allows CBD in pet products that are classified as a “pet supplement.22 That is because diet supplements are regulated for humans, but not for pets.23 Additionally, diet supplements are not considered drugs.24 The result is a gray area that allows for unregulated pet food products on the market, most commonly in the form of pet supplements or treats.25 With the cannabis market vastly expanding, consumers now have more options than ever for both themselves and their pets. As of now, the FDA has still not approved any food items or supplements that contain CBD for human consumption. And as with many other aspects of the cannabis regulation, the pet food industry still has a lot of catching up to do. The sale of pet food that contains CBD remains illegal for now. However, pet owners may elect to provide their animals with alternative supplements and food products that contain CBD. Cooking Cannabis COSMIC MUFFIN’S BONES FOR DOGS

44

elevatenv.com | june

by chef Deborah L. Costella

INGREDIENTS

(makes about 4 dozen bones)

2 cups whole wheat or brown rice flour 1 cup wheat germ 2 cups soy flour 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder 1 cup nutritional yeast 1 egg ¼ cup grapeseed or olive oil 1 Tbsp. molasses 2-3 Tbsp. CBD oil 1 cup warm vegetable, chicken or beef broth–low sodium ¾ cup warm tomato juice or water

PROCESS Heat oven to 320° degrees. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, wheat germ, soy flour, cornmeal, milk powder, and nutritional yeast until well blended. In a medium bowl combine egg, oil, molasses, CBD oil, broth and tomato juice or water. Stir wet ingredients into large bowl of dry ingredients until well combined. Mixture will be thick and stiff. Cover with plastic wrap and allow dough to rest for about 30 minutes in refrigerator. Remove from fridge and divide dough into three parts. Keeping unused pieces covered with plastic, roll out sections of dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness. Do the same for the other remaining pieces of dough. Using a bone shaped cookie cutter or doughnut cutter, cut out shapes, and place on parchment lined sheet pan. Bake in preheated oven for about 15-25 minutes until bones are cooked through and crisp. Allow to cool completely then store in air-tight container.

Please remember when cooking with medicinal cannabis you are cooking with a medicine and the medicine amount and portions of the food ingested should always be taken into consideration. Always start out with small portions or doses and wait 30 minutes to an hour before eating any additional portions of food that has been medicated.
