KAMALA

or the Supreme Commander of Corporate Militarism

WWhile promoting herself as a progressive candidate, Harris’ trajectory has closely aligned with the political establishment.

When President Joe Biden, under pressure from party donors, decided not to seek re-election, Harris obtained the nomination without an internal election process, which remains a point of controversy.

According to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges, Harris has advocated for large corporations and supported pro-militaristic and pro-police policies. The Vice President receives overwhelming support from large media conglomerates, such as the New York Times and CNN, whose “woke” campaigns highlight her status as a woman of color rather than her positions on issues facing the country.

Harris has faced harsh criticism for lacking clear ideological stances and contradicting herself on critical issues. In 2017, she supported Bernie Sanders’ initiative for universal healthcare but backtracked when insurance companies could be excluded. Harris’s political vision is not clearly defined.

As Vice President, she was tasked with

The United States is currently grappling with a multifaceted crisis. Americans are senting it in various aspects of their lives, including their identity and morals, as highli ghted by PEW research. The Biden adminis tration faces only 39% approval according to Ipsos, which could impact Harris’ election performance. The democratic party, which used to represent the working class, is the party of the status quo. Harris has dorsements from some 200 Republicans Dick Cheney, the controversial former President who authorized spying and torture programs, and former Hispanic prosecutor Alberto González, a vigorous defender of Iraq war and Abu Ghraib prison.

A supporter of Israel and the Gaza geno cide, Harris is viewed as the candidate of military-industrial complex by the left.

Her proposals include restoring nationwide abortion rights, implementing $25,000 sistance for new home buyers and a $50,000 tax deduction for entrepreneurs, as well allocating $500 million toward clean energies.

DONALD

Autocrat of White Christian Ultranationalism

Trump, a controversial businessman known for his involvement in approximately 4,000 lawsuits, has been a media celebrity since the start of his career. David Remnick, the editor of the New Yorker, described him as “a cruel and anti-democratic man who is only interested in himself.”

Trump was the first president in the history of the United States to have neither military nor government experience. Currently, he leads a large ultra-nationalist and anti-immigrant movement that his opponents label as fascist.

Trump’s primary backer is ultra-conservative businessman Timothy Mellon, heir to a family fortune of $14 billion, known for financing anti-immigrant laws and contributing significantly to the border wall with Mexico.

Trump has stated that he views the “enemy from within” as more dangerous than the threats posed by migrants or foreign adversaries. This group includes Democratic politicians and former collaborators he considers traitors. He has suggested that he could pursue action against them using the military, according to his own remarks.

Big Tech’s support for his campaign has attracted significant attention, particularly due to the media backing and over $100 million in

financing from Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of X. Right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Facebook’s first outside investor, managed to support his protégé, the Christian nationalist senator JD Vance, as Trump’s vice presidential running mate.

Musk, Thiel, and Vance have all separately expressed sympathy for abolishing federal bureaucracy and implementing an autocratic model of government.

Underneath his rhetoric, Trump represents the same interests as Kamala: the defense of oligarchy and the wealthy.

According to prominent political commentator Breht O’Shea, Trump will worsen the multifaceted crisis in the U.S., deepening the divisions of an empire in its final stage.

Among his proposals are the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, a reduction of taxes for local citizens and businesses, and an increase in tariffs on imports to rebuild the industrial base, which would generate millions of jobs. He also seeks to eliminate “woke” ideology—specifically critical theories of race and gender— in public schools. Additionally, he calls for a thorough review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and advocates for withdrawing funding for the war in Ukraine.

THEIR HOOKS

The Democratic candidate combines assertiveness with compassion, creating a strong yet relatable presence.

Her leadership showcases authenticity, empathy, and a robust commitment to equity. To connect with others, Harris often shares personal narratives that highlight shared experiences.

As an Asian American woman raised mostly by her mother, Kamala Harris holds strong positions on feminism, human rights, and justice. She has been identified as a liberal and pragmatic politician, a stance that has shaped her public image.

She persuades citizens with honesty, warm style, and empathy for issues impacting Americans. She supports abortion rights and contraception as a basic health service and, during her vice presidency, has reduced prescription drug costs.

She has built her reputation as a leader who understands the needs of most Americans and stands by their side as a progressive leader.

BODY LANGUAGE + POWER SUITS

Kamala Harris expresses herself vividly through her body language: her smiles, dances, clenched jaw, and playful gestures enhance her messaging.

Another effective approach is her clear communication about the challenges faced by her immigrant parents, which adds a personal dimension to her campaign. Harris strongly aligns with the progressive faction of the Democratic Party, promoting initiatives aimed at social and economic justice, such as a wealth tax and a $15 minimum wage.

With her bright eyes, warm smile, and straightforward approach, she creates a genuine sense of empathy.

On the campaign trail, she opts for tailored power suits in warm hues of blue and beige, ensuring the emphasis remains on her message.

Additionally, her hairstyle has become an iconic aspect of her persona, making her easily identifiable in posters, press photos, and commercials.

POLITICAL APPROACH

CHALLENGES WITH MEXICO

If Kamala Harris is elected, Mexico may carry on the migration dialogue begun in the Biden-Harris administration, focusing on offering legal certainty to about five million undocumented Mexicans residing in the U.S. By building on the foundations set by past administrations in both nations, the current governments could enhance collaborative migration management and bolster trilateral cooperation with a regional emphasis, striving to make North America the most competitive region globally.

Regarding economic matters, she endorses strategies to decrease inequality, including imposing higher taxes on the wealthy and implementing rigorous climate policies to safeguard the environment.

The Democratic candidate has garnered support from a broad electorate, encompassing women, African Americans, and Latinos. She champions issues like reproductive rights and racial justice, which starkly contrast with Trump’s base.

Trump’s leadership style markedly differs from Kamala Harris’s and that of many other politicians.

He represents a “CEO approach” that emphasizes swift, tangible outcomes at the expense of long-term institutional stability. Generally, he sidesteps dialogue and negotiation, opting instead for tight control over circumstances.

The Republican candidate is known for valuing personal loyalty and his skill in shaping public narratives, often utilizing bold and controversial strategies that defy traditional norms.

In the United States, a council member’s role is like that of a councilor in Mexico. But what specific responsibilities does a council member hold? These officials operate at the municipal level and oversee public works, assess road conditions, maintain traffic signs, issue business licenses, and review development proposals for housing and business projects. A vital aspect of their job is providing community services, including cultural and recreational activities for the elderly and children. Their office also allocates 40% of the public safety budget. Beyond these tasks, they manage numerous other responsibilities, reflecting the diverse needs of each neighborhood.

The Mexican community in Las Vegas is vital for keeping the city vibrant. Their skills ensure the smooth operation of hotels and casinos. Many community members are employed in kitchens, housekeeping, facility maintenance, landscaping, and the construction sector.

OLIVIA DIAZ COUNCILWOMAN WARD 3 LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

I'm already tired, as a Latina, of certain people viewing Latinos as something very negative, cycle after election cycle, instead of something very positive.’

Olivia’s parents come from the lovely town of Durango, Mexico, near Tepehuanes. Her paternal grandfather was a bracero, and back then, it was much easier for migrant workers to come to the United States due to a strong demand for labor. Family structures were also different; for instance, Olivia’s father had seven siblings! At just 16, her grandfather went to Northern California to work in agriculture. Later, an uncle in Las Vegas invited them for a visit, and it was here, in the early 1970s, that Olivia’s father met and married her mother. This union made Olivia the first child born in Las Vegas. For over 35 years, her father dedicated himself to his job as a casino porter, taking care of various cleaning duties. Like many other migrants, he did everything he could to make life better for his family. His unwavering hard work and commitment profoundly influenced Olivia, shaping her outlook on life. Meanwhile, her mother took on the incredible task of caring for six children—a real challenge in a bustling city like Las Vegas. Growing up, Olivia’s family lived in a neighborhood touched by gang presence, where it was all too easy for young children to lose their way.

Las Vegas, like many vibrant cities across the U.S., is working to address the important issue of homelessness. Many individuals who find themselves without a home may face tough challenges that impact their mental well-being or have turned to substances for relief. Interestingly, the use of fentanyl has notably increased in the city, highlighting the need for support and understanding.

To tackle this important issue, we’re excited to share that $25 million has been invested in the Courtyard, a welcoming navigation center where those experiencing homelessness can access clean bathrooms, refreshing showers, and a cozy spot to rest. Plus, there’s a caring doctor on-site to help anyone in need of shelter. Considering the city’s desert climate, the Courtyard is equipped with air conditioning, which is not just a comfort—it can truly save lives by protecting individuals from heat strokes.

Olivia recognizes her family’s cherished values, beautifully reflected in the vibrant Mexican community: a deep love for family, a strong commitment to hard work, and a heartfelt belief in earning rather than simply receiving. Every time she visits the towns from which her family hails, she feels this warm camaraderie and genuine sense of community, where people truly care about one another.

As elections approach, Latinos represent a growing demographic whose voting power is becoming more influential in the United States. Olivia hopes this increased significance will enable them to elect leaders who recognize and appreciate their worth. However, the valuable contributions of this community remain largely unacknowledged. They undertake the most challenging yet vital jobs; for example, she estimates that approximately 60% of construction union members are Latino, and a significant number in culinary unions are also from this community.

Olivia recognizes that economic conditions have declined, marked by soaring inflation and falling family incomes. The stress and anxiety tied to supporting families represent significant concerns for the migrant and Latino communities. These obstacles might affect political engagement; despite their efforts, improvements in their living situations remain elusive.

Olivia sees this as a wonderful opportunity to engage even more in local and national politics. She feels it’s important for everyone in the community to realize how vital it is to choose leaders who genuinely care about their well-being and, most importantly, show them the respect they deserve. Olivia is delighted to see that Mexico might have a female president before the United States and thinks there’s a lot for our northern neighbor to learn from Mexico in this area.

Olivia thoughtfully considers her future at different stages, reflecting on how she can contribute positively to her community. She understands that it is the community that recognizes her efforts and may invite her to continue serving them. With a rich background in politics and public service, she proudly stands as one of the first four Latina representatives in Nevada and has previously served as a state assemblywoman. Her commitment never wavers, and she believes that by staying true to her values, she can follow the path inspired by her community.

She warmly invites everyone to explore the vibrant city of Las Vegas and is excited to answer any questions you might have about your visit! Plus, feel free to follow her on social media at @oliviadiazlv. She eagerly awaits her Mexican brothers and sisters with open arms!

A PUBLIC SERVANT

DRIVEN BY CONVICTION

Edgar Flores is a senator in the state of Nevada, United States. Here, state senators serve part-time; they convene once every two years for five months to fulfill their duties. Their salaries are proportionally lower than those received by public servants in other places, averaging around nine thousand dollars every two years.

PHOTOART: ALEJANDRO OYERVIDES

Nevada has a population of 3,059,238, of which 897,415 are Latino, representing 29.3% of the state's population

More than 600,000 people of Mexican origin live in Nevada, representing 75% of the state's Hispanic population.

and hospitality employ 26.1% of District 2's workforce.

In Nevada, 32.4% of the population is registered as Democrats, 29.1% as Republicans, and 30.7% as unaffiliated.

In 2023, Mexico ranked as Nevada's 4th largest export destination, with goods totaling $851 million.

According to the LVCVA, Mexico was the second largest source of foreign travelers to Las Vegas in 2023, with over 1 million visitors.

This is why Edgar believes that political work of this nature is a commitment to the community. For him, this structure fosters genuine public service among those interested in this role, as it is not the lure of a high salary that draws them to it but rather a conviction to serve their community.

Edgar serves a community of about 150,000 people. It is part of Nevada’s second Senate district, which encompasses Downtown Las Vegas, parts of North Las Vegas, and Sunrise Manor in Clark County. This is the only Senate district in Nevada where most of the population is Latino/ Hispanic. It is no coincidence that this district has a poverty rate more than double that of the rest of the state, and the percentage of registered voters is the lowest in Nevada.

Edgar believes that traditionally, the Latino community, like his father and mother and many families, has come to the United States to focus on work. He feels it is also necessary to evolve this mindset, as such an approach leads to a belief that one must give everything and expect nothing in return. For Edgar, there must be a reciprocal relationship—not just regarding salary, but also in gratitude towards the community that is sacrificing and contributing so much.

This reciprocity should ensure that this community can also provide their families what they offer in their work, such as to tourists: access to housing, healthcare services, quality education, etc. Many people in the United States lack access to these essential services. For Edgar, fighting for these conditions is his obligation as a senator of Nevada.

And the vote must be earned. But if we don’t participate, we give up that power, and we remove the obligation politicians must acknowledge that this community is always involved ’

The lights in those casinos stay on mainly because of the Latino community’

EDGAR FLORES

NEVADA’S SECOND SENATE DISTRICT

In addition to employees, he believes the Latino community should have leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners—people from the community who are employers and not just employees. He points to the creation of a training program for youth aimed at political leadership and public service positions, such as senators, assembly members, and representatives. Among the essential questions to address are the costs of a campaign, the necessary paperwork, how to compete, and how to make an impact in a political career.

Another achievement he identifies relates to a program in the United States for teenagers under 21 who have suffered abuse or abandonment in their home countries and are currently in the U.S. If someone takes guardianship of these individuals, they may eventually apply for residency. Edgar identified an obstacle to completing this process in the state: Nevada courts refused to certify the documentation required at the federal level. A rule required judges to approve the documentation so these teenagers could proceed with their federal applications.

Another program in Nevada called the Driver Authorization Card allows individuals to obtain a driver’s license even if they do not have a Social Security number. This essential documentation can positively impact the lives of undocumented individuals, enabling them to perform crucial tasks like transportation to work and improving their livelihoods. Edgar acknowledges the contributions of his colleagues in consolidating these efforts. For him, the creation of regulatory frameworks designed explicitly for the needs of the Latino and migrant communities is significant.

The migrant community’s demands to political leaders include access to education, capital for investment, better wages, adequate healthcare, and the fight against corruption. These conditions have motivated or even forced people to leave their home countries. The senator believes that no one leaves their roots and family willingly.

Migrants come to the United States seeking the opportunity to work to support their families; they do not expect anything for free. In Nevada, in particular, the Latino community is hungry for entrepreneurship.

In this regard, access to banking is another sector with significant limitations for the migrant community. This puts them at a disadvantage when starting their businesses. “If someone wants to open a McDonald’s,” Edgar states, “the loan is approved quickly. However, if someone wants to open a taquería, it becomes complicated because bank personnel are not familiar with the needs or processes of these businesses.” Edgar fights to facilitate the community’s access to banks and government loans, emphasizing that the community is diverse. This diversity should be reflected in Nevada’s businesses—different customs, dishes, various business styles, and different tastes and needs. This representation of the community’s diversity in business would benefit the state’s economy.

Senator Edgar knows what he is talking about. In Las Vegas, there is a market called Broadacres Marketplace, filled with stalls selling clothing, food, fruits, sweets, hygiene and beauty products, electronics, toys, etc. The Mexican influence is undeniable. Many individuals start their first businesses here and learn the basics. Edgar’s family began there, selling ceramics and shining shoes. That is how he learned the fundamentals of business.

In the lead-up to elections in the United States, the political participation of migrant communities has historically been low. People have focused on working hard to get ahead, with a mindset directed toward that goal. For Edgar, in addition to economic contributions, it is also vital to have political power. There are different ways to achieve this; the first might involve placing someone from the community in a position of political power and decision-making. The second is voting and being politically active. In the mindset of a political figure, if a community votes and participates, those in public office will be compelled to engage with the community. They cannot count on their votes if they do not support projects and initiatives. Conversely, if a community does not vote or participate, politicians will feel no obligation and have no interest in their needs.

It is essential to demonstrate the Mexican and Hispanic community’s political and economic power in Nevada— through opening businesses, supporting a candidate, or making donations for campaigns.

The eternal legacy: the Dodgers’ victory and farewell to Fernando Valenzuela

SOMETIMES, FATE WRITES SCRIPTS SO EMOTIONAL THAT IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THEY’RE REAL. JUST DAYS BEFORE THIS WORLD SERIES BETWEEN THE DODGERS AND THE YANKEES BEGAN, THE BASEBALL WORLD RECEIVED DEVASTATING NEWS: FERNANDO VALENZUELA, “EL TORO DE ETCHOHUAQUILA,” LEFT US ON OCTOBER 22, JUST AS LOS ANGELES WAS PREPARING TO FIGHT FOR THE TITLE.

This loss hit the team and its fans deeply, adding an emotional weight the Dodgers carried with them in every game of the series. With each pitch, the spirit of that young man from Sonora who ignited ‘Fernandomania’ in 1981 seemed to be present, inspiring every player dressed in blue and white.

From the first game, the Dodgers displayed an intensity and dedication inspired by Valenzuela’s legacy. This World Series was more than a competition; it was a tribute to a man whose influence on baseball transcended generations. Each inning felt like a tribute in his honor, an effort to show that Fernando’s legacy lives on in each of them. And in the end, in an exciting fifth game, the Los Angeles team was crowned champion, giving their fans a decisive and meaningful victory. Freddie Freeman, who be -

Freeman hit four home runs in this series, achieving his sixth consecutive World Series game with at least one home run—an impressive feat that left a mark on the fans and the team. His performance not only stood out in the statistics but also demonstrated why he’s considered one of the best of his generation. For the Yankees, the story was different. Although they arrived with strength and high expectations, their offense was muted, and Aaron Judge, the star of the New York team, failed to rise to the occasion in crucial moments. The Yankees couldn’t overcome the drive and energy that the Dodgers brought to each game, an energy fueled by the

memory and respect for their fallen legend. The disappointment was evident among the New Yorkers, who could not find the spark needed to counter the momentum of a Dodgers team determined to win for themselves and in honor of Valenzuela. Judge and his teammates fell short in every critical opportunity, a difference reflected in the final score of the series.

Just days before Valenzuela’s birthday on November 1, this Dodgers championship is the best tribute they could offer “El Toro.” For the players, this victory is a way of honoring someone who was not only a star on the field but also a symbol of struggle and perseverance. This year’s World Series will become one of the most emotional and meaningful in the Dodgers’ history. This title, achieved through the team’s determination and collective effort, is a tribute to all the timeless moments Valenzuela etched into every fan’s memory. In each Freeman home run, in every pitch from the team, and every applause from the crowd, Fernando’s essence was present, and his legacy continues to live on. In honor of “El Toro de Etchohuaquila,” this victory will remain in the hearts of fans and the team as an eternal reminder of his greatness and impact on baseball.
