Chicago’s identity stretches far beyond the metropolis it is today. its Native American ancestry along the beaches of the Chicago river to the city’s cultural breadth in food, music, and art, the city’s existence is rooted in respecting the past while progressing towards the future. With this in mind, the design of the 875 Michigan Avenue clinic is inspired by the interconnecting journey that humans experience as they progress through life. Inspired by the Miami tribe’s word one, Nkoti, this idea works to connect all people while celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of individuality. Through this concept, all visitors and guests of the clinic will feel the unity and inclusion of representation within the space. Organic forms and lines will represent the common thread of every human and the journey each of us under goes. The mixture of modern patterns with those of nature will create the equilibrium of past and present of Chicago. Local art will be displayed throughout the space to capture the feeling of progression while providing positive distractions for patients. This will enhance the users’ comfort while also supporting the local community through idea of social progress. The harmony created through these contrasting ideas creates a space for human growth and progression in reaction to the environments. This idea of advancement, while respecting one’s origin, embodies the idea of opportunity and healing within the Nkoti Clinic.
