CUPSHARE PROJECT
IN T R OD U C T ION Coffee is one of the most common beverages for adults around the world and the number one food service beverage service in Canada. In Vancouver, 14 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year, with 35% of them served as “to-go” (Hennig, 2017). Waste of cuts causes serious environmental problems. Although both the municipal government and several community-based organizations have come out with better recycling systems and solutions, Vancouver still produces 2.6 million paper coffee cups as waste every week. This problem cannot be solved only by addressing it at the declining stage. Our proposal is to create a cup sharing service called “Cupshare” which aims to reduce waste at the beverage purchasing stage. This service encourages consumers to use light-weight to-go cup with an easy return system that will reduce the waste and lower the cost of product disposal and labour. In addition, Cupshare aims to improve consumer’s routines by providing an achievable service which also provokes conversations about a more sustainable future.

CONCEPT For the demo video, we tried to present the steps of service with an easy but dramatic way. By showing the tools and steps of this program (app and cup), the viewer will have a good understanding of CUPSHARE in a short period of time.
POSSIBILITY If we can take this video further, we can put in more described steps and some background information to motivate customers. This video can also act as a promotion of CAPSHARE. By putting this on websites or social media, we will be able to increase the media exposure.

CU P S H AR E EC O - F R I EN DLY C ONV ENIEN T ACH I EVABLE Cupshare is a reusable cup sharing system that promotes a more eco-friendly environment. This program is an easy and effective service for both customers and businesses. Instead of using your own travel mug, simply buy an annual membership that allows the customer to go in a coffee shop with a tap card or app. A 20 cent cash back to the customers at the point of purchase is the incentive that would be offered. and has a ‘share cup’ to go. When the drink is done, the user can easily drop the mug off in a collection bin at any participating cafe in the city. This service provides a convenient solution for users to cut down waste without the complicated process of bringing a mug. Furthermore, participating coffee shops could help to reduce cost and waste and support to a more sustainable future.

MOT IVAT ION
Grabbing a coffee to go from a coffee shop in the morning seems to be a common habit in modern society. People rely on an aromatic coffee jump-start their day. However, have we ever thought of the environmental cost behind a tasty cup of coffee? A recent CBC news, showed that over 350,000 of single-use beverage containers go to the landfills every day in British Columbia. In addition; the amount of energy and trees used to produce a disposal cup is much more than we would imagine. With a low percentage of cups getting properly recycled and a high cost of laboring and recycle processes, our ecological system suffers from the dramatic waste of cups. The fact is, a single-use coffee cup is not recyclable because of the plastic liner and coffee contamination. In addition; the cardboard sleeves and the lids are often thrown into landfills without any effort to recycle them. resource: https://globalnews.ca/news/3806846/with-millions-of-coffee-cups-thrown-away-in-vancouver-every-year-advocates-push-for-refund-deposit-system/ INTD 210 #3 PROJECT

IN T E RV IEW S EVERY DAY CUSTOMERS
With the research and ideation in mind, we pull out some interviews on the street to everyday customer, as well as our peers and families, in order to find out consumer’s habits and thoughts of single-use cup.

IN T E RV IEW S EVERY DAY CUSTOMERS QUESTIONS * Do you know how many coffee cup you use a day? * Do you have the awareness of the single-use coffee cup waste and how it connect to the local environment issue?
RESULT With 25 interviewees in our database, 40% of the interviewees use over 2 single-use cups a day. 65% of them do have the awareness on the environmental issue that is caused by disposal cup. However, even half of our interviewees do know about this serious problem, most of them do not bring their own mug. With the answers we received, people either think the reusable cup is too heavy or fragile to carry around or just simply do not want to wash the cup. Some others pointed out the cup could drip into their bag or consumers sometimes go for coffee without planning; therefore; bringing their own cup is inconvenient and not be consistent.

In order to know more about the mindset of coffee shop owners, we also pull out some questions for the owner to understand their cup usage and their participation in environmental problems.

QUESTIONS * What is the usage of coffee cups in a day? * Do the shop has the awareness of the single-use coffee cup waste and do you paritcipate in any kind of environmental events?
RESULT With 5 of the coffee shops we interviewed, cafes with a big transaction such as Starbuck or Wave Coffee use more than 200 disposable cups in a day. On the other side, local coffee shops or cafe with a bigger sitting area create less waste in cups. Since not much coffee shop has the awareness of the problems of waste, the huge amount of single-use cups create a tremendous environmental issue in Vancouver.

Therefore, we will make sure to look through coffee shops’ cleaning equipment and see if it meet the standard of dining restaurant in order to provide a consistent sanitation.
COFFEE SHOP TRANSACTION Morten had a concern about the passager flow with our service design. He thinks there will have cup supply problem with a coffee shop that has a big transaction, since we cannot predict how many cups were being taken. Therefore, we have come to a solution that there will be the delivery every night. CUPSHARE will look through the passenger flow of cafes during the proposal stage. After knowing how many cups we need to provide for the shop. The program will count the number of cups at night and deliver the cups equally (the original number we provide) into different coffee shops.

Elicia is good and consistent with visual layout and branding, therefore, the overall representation of CUPSHARE was created by her. Since Grace is greate a combining and collecting data, she had the job of transforming number and sentence(from interviews) into concise and organize data for this service. Janice is responsible for documenting the processes of our discussion and meeting in order to combine them into our presentation and process book. Since Jacky has experienced on 3D modeling, he creates a beautiful CUPSHARE cup mockup with a well-considered design. Although the original idea was proposed by Elicia, all of the group members contribute to question the service and also find out the solution together as a group. Since CUPSHARE is a big service project for a city, our group worked hard and jointly which aim to propose a better solution.

The third project was very frustrating at first, I was worried about that the short period of time will limit the work and processes we can provide. However, I am very lucky to all of the CUPSHARE groupmates. The works were well divided, full attendance for group meetings, and most importantly, everyone is calibrated and responsible. We all contribute in different parts of the service, whether it is the service itself or the supported physical avoidance. Since CUPSHARE is a big program that involves the city, consumer, business owner and a serious environmental issue, there are lots of elements and ethics we need to consider. I love how Janice is always questioning the possibility of our service, Grace is well-considered of the steps of journey map, and Jacky has always been supportive and warm as a person! I really do think we tried our best for this project, and I cannot ask for more. We all deserve a bravo! Best group experience ever.

In our group we kind of separate the work, and we combined things together. I did interviews and personas/ empathy map. It was a great experience to work in a group which allows me to meet these amazing groupmates because we did so many things on time and efficiently. In the process of interview I got a chance to understand different types of consumers. They gave me some thoughtful ideas like the impact on environmental problems and also knowing the current situation of coffee shop owners, how they dealing with the cost for single use cup and reusable cup and also some problem that may be faced in the future. However, we gathered so many research and data. We discussed and find a way to solve this problem. Within our cup prototype I think we could do better on this part. For example, the surface/ shape of the cup which can design a curve shape and allows people to hold it tight. Overall, I really satisfied with the outcome for this project, especially Elicia had done an awesome job on the visual (app design and our branding) and I hope that one day our concept of sharing cup system could be achieved in Vancouver and makes our city toward green and eco- friendly.

In this group, I can feel my teammate’s motivation in this project. I have such a great experience in this group. Everyone is friendly and willing to spend extra time on this project. This is the first time that I have a better chance to get closer to service design. We first separate each part of the works in order to have a better understanding of what to do first. Each of us was required to do interviews and personas in order to gather more information to complete our journey map and empathy map. This group allowed me to have more freedom to think and do my project. My group mate who has edited the video with me has listened to my thoughts and also allow me to find the music that matched with the video. I like how my teammate would ask and meet together and complete the work together. During every meeting, it was more like a friends talk which was relaxing. I have such as great experience to get to understand more about the environmental issue which makes me more festinated within our project “Cup Sharing.” In this project, my teammates are willing to listen and combined the possible solution together which I can feel that this project can go future and benefits the environment.

Project 3 is a group project and It is appreciate and lucky to be a group with Grace Wang, Elicia Han and Janice Wang who are a diligent and ideal teammates to have a chance on doing service design. Everyone in this group had been assigned for separate works, and I was doing the Video part and cup design part. As a group, we went out and went to Starbucks together for filming and I was using a program called Solidworks which I learned from last semester to build the mock up of the cup. Moreover, I was satisfied with the final outcome of our project because everyone in this group put lots of effort on it and even though we were feeling exhausted every time after gathering and working together, I felt fortunate that I experienced and completed those essential progress with my teammate. I love my team and hope we still have a chance to work together in the future.
