When My Home Shook
My name is Grace. I’m 13 years old. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand’s second biggest city. In February 2011 an earthquake hit my city. 185 people were killed. This is my story.
I was with my uncle Michael. We were at the pet shop when I heard a lady say, ‘This weather isn’t good, so sunny one day and cold and grey the next, perfect earthquake weather you know?’
After about 10 minutes the earthquake hit. The ground started moving under my feet. I ran under the doorway inside the shop. The power* went off and all the things on the shelves were flying off and landing on the floor. All of the animals started making noises. All the fish tanks* started falling on the floor.
After the earthquake finished I ran outside crying. A man looking so frightened ran up to me and said, ‘Can you please run in and save as many animals as you can?’ So I ran inside and picked up all of the fish off the floor.
Then I started trying to text my mum and dad but they didn’t answer. About 10 minutes later my mum arrived. I ran into her arms crying and shaking with shock. She was so proud of me. I asked her if my dad and my sister were OK. She said that they were fine. It is not a nice place to live in right now. Hopefully there will not be any more earthquakes. I think it is fair to say that Christchurch has been shaken enough, don’t you?
