It tells the story of Victor and his fourlegged* friend Sparky. When the dog dies in an accident, Victor decides to bring him back to life in a scientific experiment. But it isn’t that simple! Sparky is different. He manages* to escape and Victor has to face the consequences!

Gotye He’s already a star in Australia – the country where he grew up. He’s 32, Belgian and the star of the moment! He achieved success with Somebody that I used to know, the song that has conquered the radio and the hit parade* all round the world ……..but especially YouTube.

Kid | Famous Faces A passion for music Gotye has always loved music and he has learned to play different instruments, in particular the piano and the drums. Amongst his favourite artists are Kate Bush and Depeche Mode. When he was a teenager he formed a band with three friends from High school, Downstares. The band first played in Melbourne, and then all round Australia.

A solo career After high school, the members of Downstares went in different directions and Gotye decided to undertake* a solo career. His first album Boardface, came out in 2003 and the second, Like Blood Drawing, in 2006. International fame arrived after his third album, Making Mirrors, which contained the hit Somebody that I used to know.

What’s buzzing

on the net? Welcome to the first of our new feature ‘Kid News’ where we take a look at things that are happening around us. In this month’s issue, we are looking at what’s happening on the Internet and the rise in popularity of certain social networks. Read on to find out more!

The beginning of Social Networks The first Social Network was born in 1997 and was called Sixdegrees.com. It allowed users to create a profile and list and find their friends. Nowadays, there are so many to choose from and what is popular today, might not be tomorrow!

Myspace

This social networking site was created in 2007 in New York. It’s very popular with teenagers and young adults and half of its users are under-25. It’s a blogging site where you can post text, upload* photos and videos, submit quotes* and record videos. You can follow people whose posts you like or make your own blog private. In 2011, Tumblr became the first blogging site to host President Obama’s blog!

Pinterest is growing in popularity day by day. It’s a website that allows you to upload, save, sort and manage images known as ‘pins’. It’s set out in a ‘pinboard*’ style. It was founded in 2010 by Ben Silberman and its mission is ‘to connect everyone in the world through the things they find interesting’. It’s the social network site that has reached more than 10 million users in the shortest time and the website is valued at 1.5 billion dollars.

It’s one of the most popular social networking sites among teenagers. It’s now owned by Justin Timberlake. Users create a profile that they can use to make new friends and they can download music and videos from the site that they can add to their profile page. Users can also write and read blogs and participate in forums.

Without limits The internet has no age limits! It can be used by both young and old. An 80-year old grandma from Staten Island, USA is trying to get 80,000 followers on Twitter. She started using the social network site after her husband died. She has been using Twitter for only a year but she already has 76,000 followers including such stars as Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez. Users have been attracted by her very funny posts and videos.

Weeworld It’s a kind of virtual social network where users create their own animated avatars They use the avatar to explore the virtual world, to communicate with others and play social games. Users can also create blogs, watch videos and earn or buy points. It’s a social network aimed at* teenagers from 13 – 17 years old.

The Hunger Games From Book to Big Screen

The film based on the book written by the American writer Suzanne Collins has had huge success around the world. It makes you reflect – about love, justice and the meaning of life.

The book The Hunger Games is the first episode of the trilogy* by the American writer Suzanne Collins. The book has received many prizes and awards such as the Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year and the New York Times’ Notable Children’s Book of 2008, as well as being on The New York Times and USA Today bestseller list.

The Hunger Games The Hunger Games is a terrible reality show organized every year by Capitol City, to punish the districts that have tried to rebel. Only one rule exists – kill or die. There’s no place for friendship or love. Each district has to choose at random* a boy or girl between 12 and 18 years old that will have to fight until death. Everything is filmed by videocamera and broadcasted* live. But at a certain point the rules change…

The main character The main character is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen. She is an excellent hunter and very good with a bow*. She lives in the 12th district with her mum and little sister Primrose, who’s 12. To save her sister, Katniss

takes part* in the 74th edition of the games as a volunteer. The other contestant* is Peeta Mellark, a young boy that Katniss knows very well.

The film The Hunger Games has made record profits and has become a huge phenomenon. In the USA, there have been mile-long queues to see the film. The main star Jennifer Lawrence, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 as the best leading actress in the film Winter’s Bone, has become a teen idol all over the world. The soundtrack includes songs by Arcade Fire, Taylor Swift and The Decemberists.

Book Trivia

• The book has sold millions of copies and has been translated into 26 different languages. • It remained in the New York Times bestseller list for 92 weeks, until 27th June 2010. • The second book in the series is called Catching Fire and the third and last one Mockinglay, came out in the USA on 24th August 2010. • Suzanne Collins says that the idea for The Hunger Games came while she was changing channels on TV, on one channel there was a reality show while on the other images of war. • She lives in Connecticut with her family and she has two wild cats.

Chelsea FC

One of the world’s most successful football team is Chelsea. The club was founded in 1905 and the team plays at the Stamford Bridge stadium in Fulham, London.

The club’s owner is Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire. He has put a lot of money into the club and the last ten years have been the most successful in the team’s history. In 2010, they won their first ‘double’ – the League and the FA Cup. In May this year they won their first UEFA

Champions League against Bayern Munich. The team’s nickname is ‘The Blues’ as they play in a blue kit. John Terry is the team captain while other well-known player are Ashley Cole, Ramires, Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

Collecting What do you like collecting? We asked some teenagers from around the world …….. and here’s what they answered!

Baiko – Tokyo – 16 years old I love my manga* comic collection. I haven’t counted them but I think I have more than a hundred! My favourite editions are the ones that are about a rock singer and her friend and flatmate*. Both of them are called Nana (this is also the name of the comic) and I like reading and rereading their incredible adventures.

Emma – London – 15 years old What I love most is collecting the coins that I find or that I use on my travels. During the first trip with my family I found a strange coin with a hole in the centre and lots of little hearts around it. It was Danish and so nice! From that moment I started getting interested in strange coins from around the world.

Luc – Paris – 18 years old My greatest passion is photography. When I’m older, I’d like to be a photographer so in the meantime* I collect and repair all the cameras that I find. I like especially old cameras, they are more difficult to repair but they’re unique! To find them I go to antique markets in my city.

Nigel – New York – 16 years old I’ve been collecting shells for two years. It all started as a game, when I went on vacation to the ocean with my grandpa. He gave me a shell that he had found there years before and I continued the family ‘tradition’. I collect all the most beautiful and strangest shells I come across*.

Irina – Moscow – 17 years old I love collecting Rock LPs*. I look for them in second-hand markets and I often find bargains*. I’ve got an old record player at home and if I want to, I can also listen to them. My mum always tells me off as there’s no room for anything else.

Alejandro – Rio de Janeiro – 18 years old My stamp collection is one of the things I’m most attached to. I’ve had to have a lot of patience looking for them and cataloguing them and I haven’t finished yet. So many different ones exist. Amongst the ones I have, many are foreign and some are really old. I hope to continue collecting them and enrichen* my collection.

Mary – Melbourne – 15 years old I’ve got nearly fifty pairs of scarves. They’re my passion! I prefer socks that are fun and multicoloured. Many are warm, woollen* ones while many others are light, almost transparent and suitable for Spring. I often give them to friends and my mum as a present.

World Event Young Artists September sees a very important event coming to Britain. It’s called WEYA (the World Event Young Artists). It takes place in Nottingham in Central England from September 7th-15th. Let’s find out more about this cultural event.

What it is

Contemporary British artists

Over 1,000 young artists from more than 120 countries will participate in the event. With the word ‘artist’ it’s intended not only ‘people who paint and draw’ but ‘artist’ in the broadest* sense. There will be live music, dance, theatre, visual art, and gastronomy*. It’s a great opportunity for young people to show their work and make themselves known.

So, what’s happening on the British art scene today? Let’s take a look at some very popular contemporary artists.

The Olympiad The event comes at the end of the four-year Cultural Olympiad, which has taken place in the UK since 2008. This has been a celebration of the Olympic Games being held in Britain and has included concerts, street performance, music, theatre, visual arts and lots more. Twelve young British artists were chosen to carry out* an artistic project and to display* their work in different cities and regions across the UK. One example is in London where a young artist put LED* panels on top of the bus stops. Londoners were able to display* their creativity and talk about what they find special about their city.

Damien Hirst is probably the most famous contemporary British artist. According to* the Sunday Times newspaper he is also the richest British artist. His most famous works include dead animals in bottles, spots, and skulls decorated with diamonds. In 2012 there was a retrospective* of his work at the Tate Gallery London. The final room of the show was a gift shop where you could buy a souvenir of the show – at a price! A painted skull cost £36,800, a skateboard £480, an umbrella £195. His work is very controversial*; some people love his work and some people hate it. Banksy is a famous street artist. He does graffiti on walls, bridges and buildings using a particular stencilling* technique. His work is sometimes controversial* and his message is usually anti-war and anti-government. Often his work is painted over or covered by people

who are against graffiti. However, he has many fans all over the world and people are eager* to buy one of his paintings. In 2007, one of his painting reached a record – it was sold for £288,000. In 2010, he made a film called Exit through the Gift Shop, which received an Oscar nomination for best documentary. Julian Beever is an English chalk artist. He’s known as ‘the pavement Picasso’. He draws pictures on pavements using chalk*. But what’s so special about that? Well, he uses a particular technique that if you look at the picture in the right direction, it seems that it’s coming out of the pavement. It’s like a 3D effect. The effects are incredible. In addition, he also paints murals, oil paintings and collages*. In 2010, he wrote a book called Pavement Chalk Artist which included photos of many of his works. Kieron Williamson has been called ‘the mini-Monet’. Why? Because he’s only ten years old and already a successful artist. He was born in 2002 in Norfolk, England and in 2008 he had his first exhibition. At his second exhibition in 2009, his paintings sold out in 14 minutes! He sold 18 paintings for £18,200. Nowadays, he sells his pictures for a lot more money and there is even a waiting list to buy them! He uses watercolours and likes painting landscapes.

Future opportunities Thanks to the Olympics, an entire zone of London has been renovated, creating 200,000 new jobs. In the next 25 years the job opportunities will increase, in particular in the fields of education and health. The 2012 Olympics are over, but they have brought about* a positive and long-lasting change to the city and its economy.
