5 On Saturday the stepsisters were very excited.

Cinderella helped them to choose their best shoes and clothes. She helped them to get dressed and brushed their hair. The stepsisters went to the party in a carriage. Cinderella watched and waved goodbye. Then she sat down and cried. She was sad because she wanted to go to the party, too. Match the picture to the correct sentence.

Then there was a FLASH of light and a kind old lady appeared. ‘Who are you?’ asked Cinderella. ‘I’m your fairy godmother,’ said the fairy. ‘Why are you crying?’ ‘I can’t go to the party,’ said Cinderella. ‘I’m your fairy godmother. You’re a kind girl and I say you CAN go to the party!’ 11


6 ‘How can I go to the party?’ asked Cinderella.

‘You must go into the garden and get me a big pumpkin, a cat, six white mice and three green lizards,’ said the fairy godmother. Cinderella ran and got a pumpkin, a cat, six white mice and three green lizards. The fairy godmother waved her magic wand – FLASH! The pumpkin became a golden carriage. The cat became a driver. The mice became six white horses. The lizards became footmen.

is the story of Cinderella. cinderella [arrives and waves] Hello! My name’s Cinderella. I live with my stepmother and stepsisters. [stepmother and two stepsisters enter stage] stepmother Cinderella, I want a cup of tea! two stepsisters Cinderella, do the ironing! narrator Poor Cinderella! She works all day. cinderella I cook the meals, I wash the dishes, I sweep the floor… Oh! I’m tired. [Cinderella sits by the fire and falls asleep.] narrator One day the postman comes with a special letter. postman [knock, knocks on the door] Hello, this is from the Prince. [gives the letter to Cinderella] cinderella Thank you! stepsister 1 What is it? stepsister 2 Give it to me. [stepsister 2 takes and opens the letter] Look! It’s an invitation from the Prince. There’s a party at the palace on Saturday. Fantastic! cinderella Can I go to the party? stepmother No! You must do your work. And you haven’t got any nice clothes to wear to a party! narrator Cinderella is sad. On the day of the party she helps her stepsisters. stepsister 1 Look at me. I’m pretty! 24
