Do you know about huemuls? If you don’t, you’ll find out about them in this story. It will take you on an adventure from the museum where Dr Domuch works to the land of the huemuls, in the Andes mountains in South America. Dr Domuch and the children, Ben, Pat and Sally, become involved in trying to solve the mystery of a theft in Dr Domuch’s museum. At the same time, the children meet some local people, learn about the endangered huemuls and think about the philosophical idea of what is right and wrong.

Dr Domuch and the Huemuls Illustrated by Gustavo Mazali

2 CHAPTER 1: The necklace

Ben, Pat and Sally were on their school holidays. They were at the Natural History Museum with their aunt and favourite person, Dr Maureen Domuch. Dr Domuch was the Museum Director, but the children called her Aunt Mo.

2

Pat was drawing a beautiful Egyptian necklace. Suddenly Sam, one of the museum curators, came into the room. He didn’t see Pat and he began to take photos of the necklace. ‘Why is he doing that?’ thought Pat. 3

3 The next day when the children went to the

museum there were two police officers with Aunt Mo. ‘A thief came last night and stole the beautiful Egyptian necklace,’ said Aunt Mo. She was very sad.

4

Pat said, ‘Yesterday I saw Sam, the museum curator, taking photos of the necklace.’ ‘Thank you,’ said the police officers. But Aunt Mo said, ‘I’m sure Sam isn’t a thief!’

5

4 That evening the police officers spoke to Sam.

He was at a café playing dominoes with some friends. Sam said, ‘I often come here to play dominoes in the evening and last night I was here too.’ He pointed to the camera. ‘You can look on the CCTV camera.’

6

The police officers spoke to Dr Domuch. ‘We looked on the camera and it’s true. Sam was at the café playing dominoes all evening. He can’t be the thief.’ ‘Thank goodness!’ said Aunt Mo.

7

5 The children were on their way from the bus

stop to the museum. They saw Sam outside the cinema. He was talking very quietly on his mobile. He was saying, ‘I think we have enough now. Meet me at Mount Cathedral. At the usual place.’

8

‘What is he talking about?’ asked Pat. ‘I don’t know. Let’s go and tell Aunt Mo.’ said Ben. 9

6 CHAPTER 2: Mount Cathedral

The children told Aunt Mo about Sam. ‘Mount Cathedral is in Argentina, in Patagonia,’ said Aunt Mo. ‘Hmm! Why is Sam going there?’ She thought a bit. ‘How about a holiday? We can go skiing!’ ‘Skiing?’ asked Sally. ‘But it’s summer!’
