KID ON THE CASE

present perfect passive / zero conditional / adjectives

Agatha Christie In our last issue of Kid we had a look at one of the great fictional detectives ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and his unfailing* ability to solve crimes. Today, we’re going to take a look at one of the world’s best-known murder mystery writers with an introduction to two of her most famous fictional detectives. So, read on to find out more. The early years Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in the county of Devon in the South-West part of England. She was married twice and had one daughter. She started writing in 1916 and her first novel was published in 1920. In her lifetime she wrote not only novels, but short stories and plays as well. She wrote a total of 80 detective novels and 4 billion copies of her books have been sold! And even if someone doesn’t understand English, it isn’t a problem! Her books have been translated into more than 103 languages!

Her inspirations In her books, she often uses places she has visited as her settings*. In fact, she wrote one of her most famous novels Murder On the Orient Express in a hotel in Turkey. If you visit this hotel, you can see her room as it has been kept as a memorial* to her.

Star of the big screen Most of her books and short stories have been made into films or TV series and they have also been adapted to the radio, video games and comics. Another record she holds is that one of her plays has been on stage at a theatre in London since 1952 and is still showing after nearly 60 years. There have been more than 24,000 performances and it’s necessary to book a seat a long time in advance if you want to see it! She received many awards from the Queen for her literary works.

Her characters Most of her novels revolve around one of two fictional detectives, both of which are well-loved and well-known around the globe. So, let’s take a look at them and find out more about them.

Vampires... are in! The eagerly-awaited* Breaking Dawn is at the cinema. Vampires are ‘in’. Let’s take a look at the trends and changes of a genre which has both frightened and intrigued people throughout the ages. Once upon a time there was terror At the beginning, many vampires looked awful. The vampire Nosferatu, in the film by the director Murnau (1922), was really tall and ugly. He was made up* with a really pale face, big ears and sticking out* teeth.

Mysterious and elegant Dracula, the most famous vampire, was a bit more elegant. In Bram Stoker’s book, which the 1931 film Dracula was based on, he’s described as a mysterious gentleman that in the evenings goes to parties

and at night looks for his victims. He was played by Bela Lugosi, a Hungarian actor who wore long black cloaks and was always well-groomed*.

Twilight: charm wins On 5th October 2005 in the USA Twilight was published. In Stephanie Meyer’s book the young vampire Edward Cullen is charming and is in love with the young Bella Swan who’s also in love with him. Thanks to Edward she is saved from some really bad vampires. The books in the series (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn) have been translated in more than 50 countries, and have sold more than five and a half million copies. The films have been seen by millions of people. The image of the vampire has been transformed for ever.

Twilight dictates fashion The outfits* worn in Twilight have been studied

by the American costume designer Wendy Chuck: the black cloaks and strange clothes worn by vampires in the 1800s have been done away with*. The young vampires in the Cullen family wear cold colours (grey, sky blue, dark blue). They don’t wear famous brands* but they are very stylish and their accessories are beautiful and practical. This fashion has been really popular amongst teenagers.

brands: a product that has its own name and is made by one particular company done away with: get rid of, eliminate eagerly-awaited: wait for something with excitement made up: put make up on someone’s face outfits: a set of clothes worn together sticking out: not straight, at an angle well-groomed: elegant and smart

Harvest Festival

POSTER

In Britain, it has existed since pagan times and it’s a celebration to give thanks for a successful harvest. To celebrate people sing particular songs and decorate churches and schools with baskets of fruit and food. People bring in food from their gardens or farms and usually the food collected is given to poor people or elderly people in the local community. A similar celebration exists in North America, but here it has become a national holiday where people get a day off work. Here it is called ’Thanksgiving’ and takes place in November.

It’s a celebration that takes place every year during harvest time, when the fruit and vegetables are collected from the fields and trees.

KID CULT

so and such / reported speech / phrasal verbs

Welcome to the world of Miley Cyrus Actress, author, businesswoman, fashiondesigner, singer-songwriter, musician, dancer… Is there anything this talented youngster hasn’t done? Let’s read on to find out more. Her early life She was named Destiny Hope Cyrus as her parents expected great things from her and I imagine they

haven’t been disappointed. She was born in 1992 which makes her 19 years old. She changed her name to Miley Cyrus after her grandfather who she was very close to. She has quite a big family and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus is a well-known country singer. She also has the famous country singer Dolly Parton as her godmother*. In fact, Miley was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the home of country music.

Her lucky break

Life after Hannah

When she was 11 years old she heard about some auditions* for a new TV series on Disney Channel about a schoolgirl with a secret double life. She decided to go along to the auditions but she tried not for the lead role but for a part as the best friend of the main character. However, they were impressed with her and asked her to turn up* to the audition again for the main part. Although this time they told her she was too young and too small for the lead role. However, she persisted* and in the end she won the part.

Miley has also had huge success with a solo career. She released her first solo album in 2008 called Breakout and she also began a career in films. In 2008, she was the voice for the character Penny in the animated film Bolt. In 2009, she played in the film Hannah Montana: The Movie. However, at the beginning of 2011, she said that she’d had enough of acting for the moment and wanted to return to music. She went on tour from April to July this year and now she’s planning her next album.

Hannah Montana

Miley has had such success for a person so young and it is estimated that between June 2010 and June 2011 she earned a massive $54million. This month sees the release of the film So Undercover in the USA where Miley plays a private detective who is given a job by the FBI to go undercover* in an American college. However, now she’s going to concentrate on her music but I’m sure she’ll be back on the big screen one day soon!

The new TV series was called Hannah Montana and starred Miley as the characters Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana. By day she was an ordinary schoolgirl but by night she turned into* a famous pop star. Only her family and close friends knew about her double life. The public were unaware* of her real identity. Many of the songs from the TV series had great success and Miley became a teen idol. There have been four series of Hannah Montana and the final episode was shown in January 2011.

What the future holds

Miley Trivia - Miley is left-handed but as a child her dad taught her to write with her right hand - She wakes up at 5am every day, reads her Bible and then goes back to sleep - Her grandmother is the only person who still calls her by her birth name - Destiny - One of her favourite singers is Shania Twain, because she is fun and not afraid to be different with her music - She’s afraid of spiders

FAMOUS FACES

Muse The long-awaited new CD is in progress and people are already talking about it and the new songs proposed by these three famous English singers. The melodies After a wait of two years, Muse have finally started work on their new CD. Dominic Howard, the drummer said: “Some songs have already been written by Matt Bellamy. Maybe some melodies are more delicate than usual, but when the music is played by me and Chris (Christopher Wolstenholme, the bass player), it will be more energetic!”.

New writers? Rumour* has it that some of the songs on the new CD could be written by Chris, which is a novelty*. Muse’s songs which speak about important topics such as life, war, religion and the universe have always been written by Matt Bellamy, ever since they started in 1996 at their school concert in Teignmouth.

Around the world Since then, the group has sold more than 13 million CDs, and has won many prizes - just a few of them are the MTV Europe Music Awards, 5 Q-Awards, 2 Brit-Awards and this year Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards for Resistance. In 2011 Muse went on a long world tour and were called by U2 to accompany them on their tour in South America.

Live emotions Many of the prizes they have won have been for live performances, where large crowds are swept away* by their way of playing. Often they play for charity like at the Albert Hall in London in 2008, for children in need. However, maybe some changes will be made to their style of touring. Bellamy has declared that he feels the need to play smaller and more intimate concerts.

Why Muse? The three members say that the name wasn’t only chosen because it’s short and sounds good, but at the time many music bands were forming in their town and one of their friends said “Here in Teignmouth there must be a kind of special force, an inspirational muse”, In fact, the Muse were the Gods of art in ancient Greece.

Chris W. was convinced by Bellamy to join Muse... ...leaving behind another band and his favourite instrument. But what did he play before? a. b. c.
