This month sees a very important celebration take place in the US which marks* the start of a period of shopping and spending. Not everyone agrees with this, but let’s read on to find out more!

Thank you very much Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US on the 4th Thursday of November. The first celebration took place in 1621 and was celebrated by the ‘Plymouth colonists’ the pilgrims who had sailed across the ocean from England to the New World. They celebrated their first harvest* and marked the day together with the local indigenous Indians. For more than two hundred years, Thanksgiving Days had taken place in individual colonies and states, but in 1863

President Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of celebrations. Nowadays, families and friends usually celebrate by eating a big meal together with food such as roast turkey, cranberry* sauce and pumpkin* pie. There are also parades in various American towns and cities.

Do you have a family celebration where you eat all together and have special food?

Black Friday

Black Friday is traditionally the day following Thanksgiving. It marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping period and shops open in the early hours of the morning. They offer many discounts and promotions to encourage people to buy. People often queue outside the shops for many hours and even sleep on the pavement outside and rush* in as soon as the doors open to find the best bargains*. Since 2005 it has been America’s busiest shopping day. But where did the name come from? Well, the term* originated in Philadelphia, where people used it to describe the traffic jams* that could be found on the roads the day after Thanksgiving. But it also describes the profit that shops make on the day as ‘to be in the black’ means to be in credit as opposed to ‘to be in the red’ when your bank account is less than zero.

Do you like shopping in the sales and looking for bargains?

There’s also ‘Cyber Monday’.

Do you ever buy things online? The fight against consumerism

In recent years, people have started protesting about the huge* amounts of money spent on buying things and the Friday after Thanksgiving has also become an international day of protest called ‘Buy Nothing Day’. The day was created by Ted Dave, an artist in Canada and since then many people have joined in* the protests all over the world. Examples of different protests are: where people destroy their credit cards in public, where groups of people walk around shopping centres as though they are zombies, where people swap their old coats and have free, non-commercial street parties.

The Cinema

Let’s talk about films! What’s your favourite kind of film and why? Are you keen on a particular actor or director? Over to you!

Miguel – Salamanca – 17 years old My favourite director is Pedro Almodóvar. And maybe he’s the most famous director here in Spain and I’ve seen almost all his films. His plots are always so intense that they grab* me and always move* me. When I’m older, I’d like to be a director, therefore I hope to learn a lot from him.

Mandy – Toronto – 15 years old My dvd collection is made up of* more than 200 films. Most of them are American comedies from the early 90s. They’re so funny. I love the ones with actresses like Meg Ryan or Diane Keaton. I know almost all of them by heart* and I never get tired of watching them.

Dimitri – Moscow – 16 years old It might seem strange for someone of my age but my favourite films are silent ones in black and white. I like following the story through the music and images. In these films the faces of the actors and their movements are so expressive that they recount much more than many elaborate scripts* or useless gags*.

Nayana – Bombay – 18 years old Indian cinema is known as Bollywood (Bombay+Hollywood) and I’ve always been addicted* to it. The films are true musicals - the music and the dancing are fundamental to the story. And then another characteristic that I like a lot is the use of colour, every scene is a joy for the eyes.

Hans – Berlin – 17 years old What I love most are horror movies. I’m mad about scary films! Just think that a few years ago I was afraid of watching horror films! Then I saw a documentary that explained the tricks they use in these films. When I understood that it was pure invention, and often creativity, I got hooked on them!*

Francesca – Rome – 16 years old A year ago I went on holiday to New York with my family. Before leaving, I watched some films set in the Big Apple*. Many were by Woody Allen. I fell in love with the way he depicts* Manhattan and relates it with images. I love all his films and also his gags*, they’re really witty*!

Exhibition This month sees the end of a very important exhibition that has taken place at the British Museum in London. It started in July and ends on November 25th. It portrays* London as it was 400 years ago in Shakespeare’s time and exhibits* objects that are linked to Shakespeare’s plays such as maps, drawings, paintings, coins, medals, armour and other artefacts*. There have also been performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company of some of his plays.

The birth of a writer Before we take a look at the world in which Shakespeare lived, first let’s have a look at the writer himself. William Shakespeare was born in StratfordUpon-Avon on April 23rd 1564. He’s known as the Bard* of Avon and England’s national poet. During his life he wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, 2 long narrative poems and various other poems. His plays have been translated into every major language and his plays are performed more often than those of any other writer.

His early life As a child he lived in Stratford but when he was about 18 he moved to London where he worked as an actor and formed an acting company called The Lord Chamberlain’s Men. He also began writing and his early works* were comedies and historical plays. From 1594, his plays were performed by The Lord Chamberlains’s Men and they soon became the most important acting company in London. After

Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, the actors received a royal patent from the new king, James I, and they changed their name to the King’s Men. The members of the acting company built their own theatre in 1599 and it was called the Globe theatre. It was built on the River Thames but unfortunately during a performance of Henry VIII it caught fire and was burnt to the ground. It was then rebuilt on the same site but in 1642 it was closed down for ever. However, in 1997 a modern day reconstruction of the theatre was opened in London named Shakespeare’s Globe.

His later life After writing his comedies and historical plays, Shakespeare turned to* writing mainly tragedies and produced some of his most famous plays such as Hamlet, King Lear, Othello and Macbeth. Although Shakespeare’s works were popular during his lifetime, it wasn’t until the 19th century that he was thought of as a literary genius. After his death, Shakespeare is said to have influenced writers such as Thomas Hardy, William Faulkner and Charles Dickens. He inspired many painters including the Romantics and the PreRaphaelites and many pieces of music have been linked to his works. It has also been said that Shakespeare helped to shape* modern English as during his lifetime many different forms of English grammar, spelling and pronunciation existed. In the final part of his life he retired to Stratford-Upon-Avon where he died on April 23rd 1616 at the age of 52.
