Ed Sheeran He’s English (of Irish origins), young, has bright red unkempt* hair and sings and plays the guitar – and is the new face of the British music scene. His message is loud and clear: believe in yourself and always aim for improvement. Here’s the key to his success!

When he was 11 years old, Ed went with his parents to see Damien Rice in concert, an Irish singer songwriter. He gave Ed some very important words of encouragement and told him to go on* believing in what he was doing and not to give up* writing songs. And with these words Ed began his adventure: in 2008 he moved to London where he gave many performances, even in very small bars with just a few people in the audience.

In 2011 he released his first album, entitled* simply “+”. Ed liked the idea of using a symbol and the plus sign transmitted an idea of positivity. The album contained successful hits such as Lego House and The A Team and sold more than 58,000 copies in the first week. A few months later, he won two awards at the Brit Awards 2012 for “Best emerging* artist” and “Best British male artist”.

Pancake Day

in front of a warm fire drinking hot tea. But there’s still a lot of things going on to cheer us up and make us feel warm inside. Let’s take a look at what’s on February can be a cold and gloomy* month in the UK where most people just want to stay offer!

Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday takes place the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent*. People eat pancakes on this day as traditionally they were a way to use ingredients such as milk, sugar and eggs that were not allowed during Lent. In many towns and villages in the UK pancake races are held. During The race participants run through the towns with a frying pan throwing the pancake into the air and then catching it. The most famous pancake race takes place in Olney, in the south of England. The race has taken place since 1445 and traditionally only women can take part. If a man wants to participate, he has to dress up* as a woman.

The Darwin Festival Charles Darwin, the British naturalist and geologist and pioneer of the Theory of Evolution, was born on February 12th 1809. He was born in Shrewsbury, a small medieval town in the centre of England where every year they celebrate with a festival dedicated to him. The festival started in 2003 and usually lasts around a month. There are lots of events going on in the town and you can go on a tour of the places connected to Darwin’s life, visit exhibitions and talks and take part in workshops. Darwin’s birthday is not only a local event, but it’s also celebrated around the world as Darwin Day on February 12th in memory of his work and achievements*.

Anyone for a film? The month of February sees the annual Glasgow Film Festival take place. The festival has existed since 2005, so it’s quite a new event and gives young and new film directors the opportunity to show their films and make themselves known to the public. Last year’s edition showed 57 premieres* of British films. The whole festival is divided into three parts – Glasgow Youth Film Festival, Main Festival and Glasgow Short Film Festival – so there’s something for everybody. During the event you also have the chance to see live performances, attend discussions and workshops and meet the film directors. And if you’ve seen enough films, why not go and visit Glasgow. It’s a Scottish city full of culture and traditions and there are plenty of museums, galleries and exhibitions to keep you busy!

Jorvik Viking Festival 15th - 23rd February sees the 29th annual Viking festival in the town of York, in the north of England. York was invaded and ruled by the Vikings 866 AD – 952 AD and the town was named Jorvik under their rule. The Vikings introduced the celebration of Jolablot to Britain which was held every February to welcome the arrival of spring. During the modern day festivities you can watch mock* battles between the Vikings and the Saxons, attend music and drama performances, taste Viking dishes and take part in a beard competition (women and children too!). And don’t forget to visit the Jorvik museum – you can experience what it was like to live at the time of the Vikings and find out all about their history and traditions.

Chinese New Year The city of Manchester in the north of England has one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations in the UK. It takes place in the middle of February in the Chinatown area of the city. There will be a 50–metre long dancing dragon that will parade through the streets of the city centre, an authentic Chinese market, stalls selling traditional food, martial arts demonstrations and a fairground*. The celebrations will close with a 15-minute display* of fireworks.

Diana Vreeland She was also the editorin-chief of Vogue America (from 1962 to 1972), and she was one of the most eccentric and elegant women of the 20th century. In 1965 she was included in a list of the best dressed women at an international level. She was defined “Empress of fashion”, and established rules of style, class and elegance for 50 years.

Lidewij Edelkoort Time magazine inserted her in the list of the 25 most influential fashion experts in the world. She has worked with the most famous clothes brands and founded the cult magazine Bloom, an original fashion and trend journal. She’s from Holland and is able to predict new trends more than two years in advance. She’s the most famous and soughafter* trend-guru* of the moment.

There are people who have the ability to anticipate fashions and trends and to influence fashion with their own choice of style. They’re the so-called “Trendsetters”, and we aren’t only talking about famous people … you too can give your personal contribution with creativity and fantasy!

Anne Wintour The queen of this sector is Anne Wintour. Since 1988 she’s been the editor-in-chief * of Vogue, the most influential magazine of American and global fashion. She was born in London in 1949, and began to work as a fashion journalist at 16 years old. Today, she’s the person that decides the new trends: each issue of Vogue is a discovery, an anticipation of the coming season’s style.

Not only a Trendsetter A Trendsetter creates a style, a Cool Hunter goes in search of those who create the style, a Wannabe imitates the style that is trendy.

Trendsetters The word “Trendsetter” comes from “trend” and “setter” (a person that implements something). A Trendsetter notices in advance signs of change in the field of fashion. Usually it’s a professional person: their opinions and style influence many people that will influence other people. In this way, the initial trend is transformed into a proper fashion.

Cool Hunters Cool Hunters chase* fashions and trends. They have a great intuition, spirit of observation and curiosity: in short, they study society. More and more companies rely* on them, when they want to know what customers want. This helps them to steer* their production in the right way.

Wannabes The term means “want to be”, and it isn’t always used in a positive way. A Wannabe imitates a style, Glossario but often they don’t completely understand it and they only do it to adapt to the fashion of the moment. Often the best thing is to create a personal style by opening your wardrobe and inventing new and original combinations.

Although Dakota thinks of herself as just a ‘normal’ girl she comes from a successful sporty family. Her mother used to play tennis professionally, her father was a minor league baseball player while her grandfather used to play American football professionally. But it can also be said that acting runs in the family too – also Dakota’s youngest sister, Elle is an actress.

When she was only twelve years old, she received an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences becoming the youngest member in the Academy’s history. In the following years she was offered many other film roles and more recently she has played the part of Jane Volturi in the Twilight Saga.

She was born in Georgia, in the USA on February 23rd 1994. She started acting at a very young age, in fact she was only five when she made her first TV commercial. Her big break came at seven years old when she was chosen to play the role of Sean Penn’s daughter, in the film I am Sam. People were very impressed with her performance in the film and her special talent for acting. Following the film, she received many offers of work and appeared in such blockbusters as Man on Fire (2004) with Denzel Washington, War of the Worlds (2005) with Tom Cruise and Charlotte’s Web (2006).

This month sees the birthday of a very successful star of the big screen. Her name’s Dakota Fanning and she’s 20 this month. So, let’s find out more about her!

Beatlemania After conquering England and all of Europe, in February 1964 the Beatles arrived in America. From that moment nothing was as before: John, Paul, George and Ringo were about to change the world with their music. A new chapter in the history of world music began.

An incredible success The first Beatles album, Please please me, came out 24th March 1963 and immediately reached the top of the hit parade*, staying there for 29 weeks. Success was instant and their fans started worshipping them. On 13th October of the same year they played at the London Palladium. The concert was watched on TV by 15 million people. London was invaded by thousands of teenage girls in tears. The Beatles couldn’t get in or out of the theatre, they were blocked by the fans. In the meantime journalists gave a name to this new phenomenon: “Beatlemania”.

The Beatles in the USA Beatlemania arrived in the United States on 7th February 1964. When they got off the plane at JFK airport in New York, the four young men from Liverpool were met by about 4,000 enthusiastic fans. Two days

later the Beatles were guests on the Ed Sullivan Show, which reached a record number of viewers in the history of TV, with 73 million people watching the programme. Even today it’s one of the most watched programmes of all time. This extraordinary TV success gave the Beatles a popularity that had never been seen before.

The concert at the Shea Stadium Beatlemania wasn’t easy to halt* and it manifested itself again during the historical concert at the Shea Stadium in New York on 15th August 1965, in front of a record number of 55,000 people. It’s a symbol of Britishness and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2013. So, read on to find out more about this very British icon!

Aston Martin Trivia - A stuntman who was driving James Bond’s Aston Martin in the film Quantum of Solace lost control of the car and drove it into Lake Garda, causing £120,000 of damage. - In the Casino Royale film the Aston Martin car broke the world record for the number of barrel rolls*, completing seven full rolls.

Where it all started The Aston Martin brand was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford. They succeeded in building their first car in 1915, but weren’t able to produce anymore because of the start of World War One and the two of them went to fight in the war. When the war had finished, they got back together and designed a new car that was called

the ‘Aston Martin’. In 1922 they began building cars which were going to compete in the French Grand Prix car race. Their cars were very successful and set new world records for speed and endurance*.

A change of ownership After World War Two, life was very hard for everyone and the company changed ownership several* times. Eventually* it was bought by David Brown, a tractor manufacturer in 1947 who used his initials* on all future Aston Martin models. In 1951, the DB2 model made history by winning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the Le Mans car race in France. The 1950s were the golden era of the car and different models were produced, which won many car races. The popularity of the car was also helped by the appearance of the car in early James Bond films. The actor, Sean Connery drove the DB5 model in two films and it became a symbol of James Bond.

More changes Unfortunately, in 1972 David Brown had to sell the company and production of the car decreased. Different people took control of the company and in 1994, it was bought by the Ford Motor Company. The car continued to appear in James Bond movies and more recently appeared in the Bond films Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall starring Daniel Craig.

Happy Birthday Aston Martin 2013 saw the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Aston Martin. It was

commemorated by celebrations marking the anniversary at its headquarters* in Warwickshire where visitors could go on a tour of the factory, attend design classes and see an exhibition showing the ten different decades* of the car. For the more adventurous there was a car rally* of one hundred Aston Martins that set off from Lake Como travelling through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and then through the Eurotunnel to London. They met together in Kensington Gardens in London where they all took part in a mega picnic in the park.

The Lego Movie The animated film dedicated to Lego is soon to be released! Written and directed by the director of ‘Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs’, who last summer at the Comic-Con of San Diego told us all about it and declared that he’s already hoping for a sequel*! A look to the past Lego building blocks are one of the best loved toys in the world. The Danish company that produces them, opened in 1916, and initially only produced wooden toys. In 1949 they extended their production thanks to plastic and a few years later in 1958, they released the first version of the

famous building blocks onto the market. The name LEGO was invented in 1934 (from “leg godt”, which means “play well” in Danish).

The plot The film follows the story of Emmett, the most ordinary, polite and respectful Lego minifigure around.
