woodcutter lived in a little house in the forest with his two children and their stepmother. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. The family was very poor and they didn’t have enough food to eat.
We’re hungry! We haven’t got enough food.

We’ve got enough food for two people, but not for four!

4 The stepmother wasn’t very kind and one
evening she had an idea. ‘We’ve got enough food for two people. Tomorrow you’ll take Hansel and Gretel into the forest and leave them there. Then there will be enough food for us!’ said the stepmother. ‘But they’re my children. I can’t leave them alone in the forest. They’ll never find their way home again,’ said the woodcutter. The children heard their horrible stepmother. Gretel was sad and scared, but her brother had a plan.

I made a trail with white pebbles so we can find our way home,’ said Hansel. ‘Well done, Hansel! You’re great!’ said Gretel. Hansel was a clever boy. The trail of pebbles helped Hansel and Gretel to get back home.

6 Hansel and Gretel arrived home but their
stepmother was very angry when she saw them. ‘Tomorrow you must take the children back to the forest,’ said the stepmother. Hansel heard what she said. The next morning the stepmother called the children. She gave them a small piece of bread and the father took the children to the forest and left them there. But Hansel had another idea. He left a trail of breadcrumbs on the ground to help them find their way home.

Let’s act! storyteller This
is the story of Hansel and Gretel. hansel [arrives and waves] Hello! My name’s Hansel. And this is my sister, Gretel. gretel [arrives and waves] Hello! My name’s Gretel. woodcutter [arrives and waves] And I’m a woodcutter. I’m Hansel and Gretel’s dad. storyteller Hansel and Gretel live in the forest with their dad and stepmother. The family is poor. stepmother I’m hungry! We haven’t got enough food to eat. storyteller One evening… stepmother [talking to the woodcutter] There’s enough food for you and me, but not for Hansel and Gretel. Tomorrow morning, take the children into the forest and leave them there. woodcutter No! They’re my children! I can’t leave them in the forest. storyteller Luckily, Hansel and Gretel were listening. Hansel had a plan! hansel Don’t worry, Gretel. I’ve got an idea. [Hansel fills his pockets with white pebbles.] storyteller The next day the woodcutter took Hansel and Gretel into the forest. Hansel dropped the white pebbles on the ground. gretel I want to go home. I’m scared! I’m hungry!

It’s OK, Gretel. Let’s follow the pebbles back home. gretel Well done, Hansel! storyteller Back at home the children’s stepmother was very angry! stepmother [talking to the woodcutter] Tomorrow you’ll take the children back to the forest! woodcutter But the forest is dangerous. storyteller Again, Hansel was listening. The next morning the stepmother gave the children a piece a bread and their father took them into the forest again. hansel [dropping breadcrumbs on the ground] I can leave a trail of breadcrumbs to follow back home. storyteller Later... gretel Hansel, what can we do? hansel Don’t worry. We can follow the breadcrumbs. gretel What breadcrumbs? There aren’t any breadcrumbs. hansel Oh no! The birds have eaten the breadcrumbs! Well, let’s try to find the way home. We can follow that dove. storyteller The children walk and walk. gretel [pointing] Look at that house! hansel It’s a house made of sweets. gretel There are biscuits, sweets, chocolate, lollipops... Wow! hansel

[all sing together] What a wonderful house made of biscuits, ice cream and cake. Lollipops and chocolate sweets and cream. Is it a dream? Rub your tummy yummy and scrummy!

[all sing together] I’m a wicked witch can’t you see? Being wicked is lots of fun. I’m a wicked witch yes, that’s me!

Ha, ha, ha! I’ll give the boy lots of food. Then he’ll be fat and I’ll eat him up! storyteller Luckily, Gretel hears the witch’s plan. gretel [giving a bone to Hansel] Hold this bone, Hansel. The witch will think you are thin. witch [touching the bone] Let me see... No, you’re too thin. storyteller Two days later. witch I’m hungry! Fat or thin, I’m going to eat you! gretel But the oven isn’t hot. witch Let me see. gretel [pushing the witch in the oven] Go away, you horrible witch! storyteller Gretel pushes the witch in the oven and closes the door! Then she opens the cage and Hansel is free. hansel Well done, Gretel! Come on, let’s go. gretel Wait! Look, the witch has got lots of coins and jewels! storyteller The children fill their pockets with coins and jewels. Then they run into the forest. hansel + gretel [calling in loud voices] Dad! Where are you? woodcutter Hansel! Gretel! Is that you? I’m here! hansel + gretel Oh, Dad! We’re safe. And look, we aren’t poor. We’ve got coins and jewels. woodcutter We can be happy together. Your stepmother has gone. Always remember: never stop hoping! witch
