Five Unusual Places to…

Eat

In this new feature we’re going to take a look at some quite ‘strange’ places that exist in the UK and where we can get something to eat, do some shopping or maybe just hang out with* friends. Maybe you’ve been to one of these places or even have something similar where you come from? Read on to find out more!

verb patterns/relative pronouns/would

In The Clink

In English ‘the clink’ is an informal name for a prison, so can you imagine where this place to eat is? Yes, you guessed right! Inside a prison. It was the idea of Alberto Crisci, the catering manager of the prison, who thought it would be useful to train prisoners to cook and work in a restaurant before they were released* from prison so they would have some skills and a qualification when they returned to normal life. In 2009 the first restaurant opened inside a prison in Surrey in the south of England and now there are 4 training restaurants of this kind. The Clink in Cardiff, Wales was voted the best restaurant in Cardiff by Trip Advisor.

Dining in the Dark

Have you ever eaten in total darkness*? Would you be afraid or would you love this experience? Well, now you can. At ‘Dans le Noir’ in London there’s a restaurant where you sit and eat in the dark. You order your food before you enter the dark room and the kitchen staff cook in a lit* kitchen, but some of the waiters and waitresses are blind*. Eating without seeing your plate makes the taste and smell of the food stronger and you appreciate it more. Once a month they also organise a ‘silent party’ where you put on headphones and dance to your favourite music in total silence!

DO YOU KNOW….? At the Cereal Killer café there aren’t just chairs to sit on but also:

sofas

b

The answer is on page 15.

The Attendant Café

This could be one of the strangest places you can go to have something to eat! It’s located inside a former Victorian men’s public toilet. It was built around 1890 but was closed down in the 1960s. For about fifty years it was unused until two friends decided to open a stylish café there. It took two years to renovate* and in January 2013 it was opened to the public. They kept the original wall tiles* and the floor, and of course cleaned everything very well. If you enjoyed your visit, then you can leave a message on the wall at the entrance. There graffiti is permitted! The only thing to remember is that if you need to go to the toilet, the café doesn’t actually have one that functions!

Dining in a plane

Cereal Killer Café

Do you like eating cereal? Would you like to eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well, now you can at the Cereal Killer Café in London. This was the idea of two identical twins, Alan and Gary Keery from Northern Ireland who opened their business a few years ago. They were inspired by a 2007 American comedy where the main character works in a café that only serves cold cereal. Before opening their café, they did a lot of research and asked people on the streets if they would like to eat in such a place. More than half the people asked, said yes. The café offers 120 different types of cereals from all around the world, 12 kinds of milk and 20 different toppings*. and their motto is “If we can source it, we will sell it”.

This restaurant is inside an old 1958 airplane that’s based on an airfield in Coventry, in the Midlands. About 40 people can eat inside and while you’re eating you can look at the world famous vintage airplanes from the window. Have you seen the James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’? Well, the airfield and the airplane appears in this movie! The younger visitors can become a member of the ‘DC-6 Little Aviators’ club and visit the cockpit* and learn all about the planes.

Glossary blind: people who can’t see cockpit: the part of the plane where the pilot sits darkness: when there’s no light, everything is black hang out with: just spend time with your friends lit: with light, not dark released: (here) leave prison, to be free renovate: change a room or a building, make it nicer, more modern tiles: little ceramic squares you put on walls or on the floor toppings: something extra you put on food to change the taste

We love

YouTube!

It was born to share videos online and is one of the most visited sites on the web. It has even allowed many people to become ‘famous’. Have you ever thought of taking part? Read the following three pages to get some useful advice. YouTube started a ‘social revolution’ making the words of the famous artist Andy Warhol ring true: “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”. All you need is a computer, a webcam, a microphone and a strong desire to share something.

Professional YouTuber

Many of the more famous YouTubers began almost as a game, making simple videos in their room or outside. In some cases, their passion has transformed itself into a real job - the more views a video gets, the more money you can earn. If your videos get a lot of views, then this could attract big companies who often pay the Web Stars to put their advertising* before or during the video.

Report How to become one of them

Are you an aspiring* YouTuber? Starting your own channel and publishing your own videos isn’t difficult at all …….but on YouTube many things have already been done and some of them have many followers. So how can you get yourself noticed among so many subscribers? Some good advice is to start with something you love and you’re passionate about. It will be great fun creating videos by taking inspiration from what you like the most. Do you have any ideas?

6

A channel with a theme

Choose a theme – you can speak about your favourite TV series or the films you saw at the weekend, the last book that you read, or do some imitations or… do some D-I-Y and invent some new recipes! If you want, you can prepare a presentation video to say who you are and what your channel will be about. However, it’s essential that you try to be original and not copy other people’ s contents. If you think of something unique, you’ll probably be more successful! And look straight at the camera - you’ll capture* your audience.

Your little “community”

Even if YouTube for you is just a hobby, you’ll be pleased* to see the number of subscribers to your page increase. Winning over* a personal group of viewers is one of the most complicated aspects, as it requires a lot of determination from you! You’ll realise that you’ll have to dedicate yourself to your channel by publishing high quality videos quite often. But no hurry! And don’t give up*……..your followers will arrive sooner or later.

present perfect/will/adverbs of frequency

A mini-guide for you, step by step Have you decided to join the YouTube world? Well, here is some useful ‘technical’ advice to become a YouTuber… follow it and everything will be simpler and faster! 1. To start with, you need a Google email address (Gmail). 2. At the same time your profile on Google+ will be created (Google’s social network, similar to Facebook but less well-known). 3. Use your Google data to access YouTube.com and start working on your channel. 4. Choose the name of your channel. Think about it well. It shouldn’t be very long or difficult but it should be particular and recognisable*. Upload also a photo to personalise your space on YouTube. 5. Now you’re ready to insert your first video.

THE ROAD TO FAME Which young artist became famous thanks to YouTube? It was 2007 and in his videos he sang the songs of artists like Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Justin Timberlake. A short time after he was discovered by Scooter Braun, his future manager.

Britain’s canals and rivers In this feature we’re going to take a look at some interesting places to visit in Britain and some interesting facts about these places. Ready to start our journey?

Rivers and more Rivers

Obviously you know that Britain is an island but did you know that it contains a lot of rivers and canals too? In the past they were used for transporting goods by boat or for carrying sewage*. A lot of important events in British history have happened near rivers, especially the River Thames in London. For example, the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, the plot* to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. Lots of modern day events also take place on rivers such as the famous Cambridge/Oxford Boat Race and the Henley Regatta.

Did you know….?

The English Channel used to be a river many centuries ago.

Surfing on the River

Britain’s longest river is the River Severn which is 354km long and flows through the south west of England and a part of Wales. About 260 times a year, a very strange fact happens. The movement of the water causes waves* that move backwards*. Sometimes the waves are as high as 3 metres and they travel at a speed of about 20 kilometres an hour. It’s quite usual to see people on their surfboards when this happens! In 2006 a big whale was seen swimming in the river Thames in London. Many people were very surprised and shocked to see this as it was very unexpected. Many attempts were made to try to save the whale but it was impossible. Its skeleton was given to the Natural History Museum in London for scientific study.

8

The Batcave

Have you ever seen the Batman film, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’? Do you remember that Batman hides his bat cave behind a waterfall? Well, this particular waterfall is located in the Brecon Beacons, a mountain range and national park in Wales. Its name is Henrhyd Falls and this particular area is known as Waterfall Country. But do you know that the highest waterfall in Britain is in the far north of Scotland? It’s called Eas a’ Chual Aluinn and is 200 metres high.

Rivers no more

In the past there were many rivers in London, not just the Thames. Many of them were used to carry sewage but the Victorians covered many of them with bricks and so they were seen no more. In fact , one of these little rivers that used to be full of salmon, now flows under Buckingham Palace and Westminster!

A cemetery for boats

Where do you think boats go when they are no longer used? Well, at Purton Hulks on the River Severn in Gloucester there’s a boat graveyard*. It’s the biggest ship graveyard in Britain and you can see some iconic* ships there such as the ‘Catherine Ellen’, a ship that took part in the Irish war of Independence.

Three Men in a Boat

One particular part of the Thames that goes from Kingston to Oxford has a literary connection. This is the part of the river where author Jerome K Jerome travelled by boat with two of his friends. This was his inspiration for the book ‘Three Men in a Boat’.

Rivers are also used to provide* electricity for our homes. There are 200 hydroelectric powers stations in Britain but they only provide 1-2% of Britain’s energy needs. Hydroelectric power is a clean, renewable energy source and it’s forecast* that in the future more will be used to fulfill* our energy requirements*.

DO YOU KNOW…? In 2011 a well-known magician and illusionist walked almost 100 metres on water on the River Thames. But do you know his name? a

David Blaine

b

Harry Potter

c

Dynamo

The answer is on page 15.

Interview with…

Millie Bobby Brown A new star is born and everyone is already crazy about her. This young actress got herself noticed* at just 12 years old and thanks to her amazing talent she has become the revelation* of 2016. Let’s take a look at the star of Stranger Things. Stranger Things is a science fiction TV series set in the 80s and created by Matt and Ross Duffer. The two brothers were inspired by classic films such as E.T., The Goonies and Stand by Me. The first season became available on Netflix in July 2016 and immediately became a cult series. The second season is on its way very shortly.

10

Tell us about your character in Stranger Things. Who is she and what happens to her? I play Eleven, a girl with super powers who escapes from a secret laboratory and who has a very mysterious past. “Elle” makes friends with Mike, Dustin and Lucas, and she helps them to find their friend Will, who had disappeared shortly before and who was trapped in the Upside Down, a parallel world inhabited by a monster called Demogorgone.

The Duffer Brothers declared* that the actress to play Eleven was the most difficult to find. Millie was chosen out of 307 children after a very particular audition which involved some ‘invented’ scenes used to put the actresses’ abilities and talent to the test without telling them anything about the character or the plot*.

get/relative pronouns/gerunds

It’s your first lead role* and without a doubt it’s one that has changed your life, isn’t it?

- Millie was born in Malaga, in Spain on 19th February 2004. Her parents Kelly and Robert Brown, are English. - She loves singing. Last year she performed on the stage of the Emmy Awards singing Uptown Funk together with the other young actors of Stranger Things. - One of her best friends is Maddie Ziegler, the young dancer who appeared in Sia’s video. - Her Instagram profile is followed by almost 4 million people.

Before Stranger Things I had a few small parts in some episodes of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy. And then everything changed… for the better! If today I’m so lucky, it’s only thanks to my family who has always believed in my abilities… My parents sold everything to be able to move with me to Los Angeles and allow me to fulfill my dreams. Now they’re always with me and they’re accompanying* me on this new adventure.

How’s your relationship with your colleagues on the set? With the other boys and girls of the group we’ve all become good friends. Before the filming began we started a chat to get to know each other.… among the “big stars”, I got on really well* with Winona Ryder, who in the series plays Joyce, Will’s mum. She’s a phenomenal* actress! And she started acting when she was a child. We have a lot in common.

In order to transform yourself into Eleven you had to cut off all your hair. How was that? Oh yes, in actual fact I had long hair. At the beginning the idea scared me a bit, but then Matt and Ross Duffer showed me a photo of Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road and I was immediately convinced! The most difficult thing was impersonating* this strange but very special young girl who hardly ever expresses herself with words, but with body language and facial expressions. It’s a real challenge transmitting* an emotion just with your face.

The audience and TV critics* both agree. Millie’s acting in Stranger Things is of a very high level, especially considering her age. “Eleven” has won over everyone, from the millions of fans who follow the series to international celebrities who have written many tweets on Twitter complimenting the young actress.

Also the fashion world is showing an interest in you……..… Calvin Klein, Burberry, Giorgio Armani, Valentino are all requesting you. But what’s your style? I have to say that it’s an honour to have lots of famous fashion houses ready to work with me. For me they’ve created colourful and romantic clothes perfect for my age. In my free time I like being simple and comfortable. I dress like many teenagers - jeans, a t-shirt and on my feet the legendary* Converse All Stars.
