p l l a a c c i e g s a M Listen and read. Uluru (also called Ayers Rock) is a very large, very special rock formation located in Central Australia, in the Uluru-kata Tjuta National Park. Depending on the time of day and the weather, the rock changes color, from amazing blue to violet to glowing red! The Aborigines believe that below it, underground, there is a sacred energy source, so they request that visitors not climb the rock, to show respect. The Niagara Falls are made up of two water falls: the Horseshoe Falls in Canada and the American Falls in the USA. They are very powerful and the name “Niagara” is an American Indian name which means “thunder water”.
20
An Indian legend tells of a giant water snake which forms a semi-circle shape with its head on one side of the river and its tail on the other; this is the origin of the Horseshoe Falls. They say that the spirit of Lelawala, the daughter of Chief Eagle Eye, protects her people from harm: she is “the maid of the mist”.
Stonehenge, a megalithic ruin, is a circle of huge stones near Salisbury, in England. Local folklore says the structure is the work of giants, gods or wizards. We don’t know why it is there: maybe to observe the stars, or maybe for special rituals. It is very impressive and the atmosphere is quite awesome. Many experts think it is a very unusual religious place.
