She’s a Canadian singer; she was born in Mission, in British Columbia, in 1985. In 2007 she stars on the talent show Canadian Idol. She becomes famous on 2008 with a cover version of a song by the American singer John Denver and her first album comes out the same year. In 2011 the big hit Call Me Maybe comes out before her first EP and her second album. The song becomes the anthem of the American swimming team!
Justin Bieber is one of Carly’s biggest fans: she was the opening act on Justin’s Believe Tour!

Eco-chef The eco-chef only cooks food which is in season and which is organic, meaning food produced without any chemical substances. Eco-chefs use little energy to cook and they don’t use artificial substances to conserve food. In the future there will be more eco-chefs in our restaurants!

Eco-car engineers design electric cars and cars which pollute the environment less. They use “clean” and renewable energy for the good of the environment. By 2030, 18% of all cars in industrialised countries will be electric.

Our rubbish can be collected and re-used to make new products. Recycling rubbish collectors take our rubbish and divide it into different materials (plastic, paper, glass, etc.). Then they send the materials to industries which recycle them. This way, industries can produce new products with old materials. It is a job which will become more and more popular in Europe.

The polecat is a small, wild mammal which is typically found in parts of Great Britain. Let’s find out more about this furry friend!
The polecat is similar to a badger or a weasel. It’s got a long, thin body, which measures about 40cm, and a long tail, which measures about 15cm. Its body is covered in brown and black fur and it has usually got white stripes on its face. It’s got 4 short legs but it can run very fast! It weighs about 1kg and it usually lives for about 5 years. The polecat is a typical part of British wildlife. You can see these animals in many parts of Great Britain, but they are especially common in Wales and the South of England. In the 19th century people hunted polecats for their fur, but now they are a protected species! Have you ever seen a polecat? Do polecats live in your country too?

Boy Scouts … for girls! In 1907 Robert Baden-Powell held a special camp for boys to learn new skills and develop independence. It was very successful and soon after some groups of girls wanted to try similar activities. In 1910 Robert Baden-Powell’s sister, Agnes, began another organisation, this time for girls, called the Girl Guides.

This month we celebrate a very special birthday. The Brownies Organisation is 100 years old. Let’s find out more about the celebrations!
Welcome to the world of Brownies The Girl Guide organisation was for older girls, from the ages of 12 to 25, but the idea was so popular that younger girls wanted to join too, so Agnes began a club for juniors in 1914. This was the beginning of the Brownie organisation. Today there are Brownie clubs all over the world. In fact, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is the world’s largest female organisation!
What do Brownies do? Brownies are girls aged 7 to 10 who join a club and follow a programme called the “Brownie Adventure”. The programme allows girls to learn new hobbies, play music, go on camps and holidays, explore other cultures and take part in outdoor activities! Brownies can also collect special interest badges, which show that they have learned a new skill!
Did you know?... Around a quarter of all 8 year-old girls in the UK are Brownies!
This year the Brownies organisation celebrates 100 years and the celebrations will last for 8 months – from the beginning of January to beginning of September! During the celebrations you can take part in a special challenge, or even go on a 4 day trip to France or Belgium!

There are many legends about mermaids, especially from the area of Cornwall in England, but the Mermaid of Zennor is perhaps the most famous.

Mathew Truwhella was a young man who lived in the town of Zennor in Cornwall. He sang very well and he performed in the church choir every Sunday. One Sunday a strange and very beautiful lady came to hear Mathew singing. She listened quietly to his songs and smiled kindly at him when he finished. Mathew immediately fell in love with the lady and he followed her when she left the
church. Nobody ever saw Mathew again … he disappeared! Everyone in the village was worried! But many years later, the captain of a ship heard a mermaid calling to him from the sea. She asked him to move his ship because it was blocking the doorway to her house and she couldn’t get inside to see her husband and children. And her husband’s name ……. was Mathew!
