How we look after water is something that will greatly affect the future of our Earth and the wellbeing of its inhabitants. This book asks children to think about the questions: what do you know about water? How much water is there on Earth and why is it so important? What do you know about the animals that live in our oceans, rivers and lakes? Are we looking after this vital natural resource? It also tells three stories from different parts of the world about how children have dealt with problems related to water.

5 WATER AND HUMANS
We know that water is very important and is often a beautiful natural world… so do we look after it? Often, the answer is ‘No!’ There are more and more big cities with more and more people, and they all need water for drinking and washing. Also, more people means more agriculture. There is a big danger we won’t have enough water in the future.
Sometimes factories make water dirty and dangerous for animals. We also make too much rubbish which often goes into the water. This is bad for our water and so bad for us! 8
Fishermen often use nets that are too big. They catch fish that are too small to eat and animals we don’t eat at all, like dolphins and whales.
Big boats carrying oil sometimes have accidents. Oil goes into the sea and kills sea animals.
