• We use the comparative to compare things, people or concepts. The second object of comparison is always preceded by than. Sweden is colder than Mexico in winter. Susan is more attractive than Maria. • We use the superlative, preceded by the, to compare several things or persons within a group or category. Sandra is the tidiest person I know. New York is the most exciting city in the world. • The group or category used for comparison can be introduced by the prepositions: – in / at followed by the name of a place. Multi-word verbs Sometimes we can combine a verb with one or more prepositions to create a new verb. These verbs are called ‘multi-word verbs’ or ‘phrasal verbs’. Here are some examples you are already familiar with. I like to look at photos. I wake up early every morning.

From noun/verb to adjective (3): the suffixes -ful and -less In Unit 1 we learned the adjective beautiful. Underline the suffix that transforms the noun beauty into an adjective. Note that the -y changes to -i when it is at the end of a word. The suffix -ful means that something or someone is ‘full of this quality’. Look at the adjective hopeless: it ends with the opposite suffix -less which means that something or someone is ‘lacking this quality’.

Skills Reading 1

ead Ben’s report for his geography lesson. R What is TYF?

The smallest city in Britain My project is about St David’s in Pembrokeshire, South west Wales. This city interests me because it is the smallest city in Britain. The population is less than 2,000! The landscape is really breathtaking and it’s got one of the best beaches and seaside resorts in Wales. They say the sea along the coast is the warmest and cleanest in Wales. (When I visited it was a bit cool, but it was September!) St David’s has also got a beautiful medieval cathedral called St David’s Cathedral. The city is called St David’s because the famous saint, St David, was born here. He was important for spreading Christianity in the fifth century. As a result, St David’s became the centre of Christianity in the Middle Ages. Once, the city was as important as a trip to Rome for pilgrims. St David said ‘people should do the little things in life’. In fact St David’s is more traditional than other parts of Wales. One thing I noticed when I was there is that there are none of those shops you usually get in bigger cities. The reason for this is that St David’s is inside a National Park, so big chain stores can’t open here. So, it’s not as trendy or commercialised as other parts of Wales, but I think that’s a good thing. One of the coolest facts about St David’s is that, although it’s the smallest city in the UK, it’s got the fastest growing alternative local industries in the UK. There are crafts, organic farming and ecotourism. TYF adventure holiday centre is famous. It’s one of the most eco-friendly activity centres in the world; it only uses green electricity and thousands of people come here every year.

2

Answer the following questions.

1 Why did Ben choose St David’s for his project? 2 Where is it? 3 What is the sea like in this area? 4 Why was St David’s important in the middle ages? 5 Why aren’t there any big shops in St David’s? 6 What is TYF famous?

– Why is it important? – Where is it? – What does it have that is special? (Use comparatives and superlatives.) – What is the coolest fact about this city?

• We use Who…? and What…? as either a subject or an object. – When we use them as an interrogative subject pronoun, we do not use the auxiliary do / does / did and do not invert the verb and subject. Who is with Samuel? What’s wrong? – When we use them as an interrogative object pronoun, we use the auxiliary do / does / did and invert the verb and subject. Who did your cousin marry? What did she say? • We use Which…? to express a choice, usually between two things or people. It can be either subject or object. Which boy is your cousin, the blond one or the red-haired one? (subject) Which painting do you prefer? (object) ! Note! What…? and Which…? can both be used to express a choice between two or more options, but: – we generally use what for an indefinite number of options. What’s your favourite colour? – we generally use which for a definite number of options. Of these three scarves, which do you prefer? • We use why to introduce a question and we use because to introduce the answer. A Why are you late? B Because I missed the bus!

Which CD are you listening to? • We use how before adjectives or adverbs that indicate: – age. How old is your brother? – size / dimension. How tall is your father? How high is the Empire State Building? How high is Mount Kilimanjaro? How long is the Amazon River? – distance. How far is Philadelphia from Washington, D.C.? – quantity with uncountable nouns. • We use could: – to make a slightly more polite request. Could you do me a favour, please?

• can and may are modal verbs. • Like all modal verbs, can and may: – have the same form for all persons. – do not take the 3rd person singular -s in the Present simple. – are always followed by a verb in the base form. • can and may do not have all of the modes and tenses of other verbs. In these cases we use other verbs in place of them. I’d like to be able to play the violin. She wasn’t able to finish the project in time. • We use can: – to give or deny permission in an informal way. A Can I leave now? B Yes, you can. / No, you can’t. You can have a snack, if you like.

• We use may: – to request, give or deny permission in a very formal way. A May I open the window? B Yes, you may, I don’t mind. A May we smoke? B No, you may not, it’s forbidden. ! Note! We use may not only in the long form, it cannot be contracted. Compare with can: A Can I go to the toilet? B No, you can’t. A May I go to the toilet? B No, you may not.

– to make an informal request. Can you tell me the way to the station, please? Can you give me a hand?

Question My girlfriend and I are visiting London for ten days. We are both students and we like going out. We’d like to have a typical night out in London. We love comedy, theatre, dance, music, but haven’t got a lot of money. (We don’t want to spend more than 6 or 10 pounds each for the show and maybe another 5 or 6 pounds for a snack.) The West End shows are too expensive for us. Can you recommend something for us? Bobby Brown Best Answer What about going to see a show at one of London’s Fringe theatres. One of my favourites is Camden People’s Theatre on Hampstead High St. They have a variety of shows from live music to traditional theatre. I like going there because the people are friendly and it’s much cheaper than the West End. I never pay more than five or six pounds because they do discounts for students. We saw a great cabaret on Friday night and then we went round the corner to Drummond St for a curry in a really good vegetarian Indian restaurant. Laura Why don’t you try a comedy club? I like The Chuckles Comedy Club. It’s one of the oldest comedy clubs in the UK. It’s got a very relaxed friendly atmosphere. Saturday night is a great night out. I went there last month with my family for my birthday. We had a great meal and it only cost us £20 including the price of the show. (Tickets for the show cost £12.) We went by taxi, but the club is very near, about four or five different underground stations. Pete Hi there! If you want a fun night, you could go to The Poetry Café in Covent garden. It’s easy to get to, get off at Covent Garden or Holborn underground stations. Amateur and professional poets read their poems. I went there last Saturday with my mates. We had a great night. It’s a cheap night out. Tickets only cost £6 and you can take part! I sometimes go there on Saturday mornings and have a cappuccino and read a book. Rick

Dreams Can Come True... Focus on Grammar

be going to

Affirmative form I am going to work You are going to work He is going to work She is going to work It is going to work We are going to work You are going to work They are going to work

Negative form I am not going to work You are not going to work He is not going to work She is not going to work It is not going to work We are not going to work You are not going to work They are not going to work

• We use be going to + base form of the verb to express: – an intention. Are you going to see your boss tomorrow? – a decision that is already made regarding the future. I’m going to spend my holidays abroad. • In American English, they tend to use the slang form gonna instead of going to in informal spoken language, in songs, etc. I’m sure we’re gonna win the game!

Present continuous for future plans • We use the Present continuous for plans or arrangements made regarding the future. In this case we also use a time expression, unless the situation is very clear. We’re having lunch together today. They aren’t going abroad for Christmas this year. What are you doing this evening? • We usually prefer the Present continuous with the verbs go, come and leave, even when there is only an intention. She’s going to the gym this afternoon. Are you coming to the party tonight? I’m leaving at dawn to catch the first train to Birmingham.

20

Interrogative form Am I going to work? Are you going to work? Is he going to work? Is she going to work? Is it going to work? Are we going to work? Are you going to work? Are they going to work?

Short answers affirmative Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes,

I am, you are. he is. she is. it is. we are. you are. they are.

negative No, I’m not. No, you aren’t No, he isn’t. No, she isn’t. No, it isn’t. No, we aren’t. No, you aren’t. No, they aren’t.

! Note! When we talk about the future, it is not always clear whether there is a definite plan or just an intention to do something. In these cases, we can use either the Present continuous or be going to, but the difference in meaning is very subtle. I’m meeting Derek tomorrow morning. (there is a prior arrangement – we have already spoken and agreed) I’m going to meet Derek at the end of the week. (the intention is there, but the specific details have not been decided yet) ! Note! We always use the Present simple after when, if, as soon as, before and after to speak about future actions. My uncle is going to move to the countryside when he retires. If I do well on my test, I’m going to celebrate! I’m going to look for a job as soon as I graduate.

3

want to • w ant is a regular verb. We can use it with different structures: want + noun

• In American English, they tend to use the slang form wanna instead of want to in informal spoken language, in songs, etc. Wanna go out for pizza tonight? I wanna hold your hand. • To express desires and intentions, we can also use would like (’d like) + to infinitive. She would like to be an actress. She’d like to start a new course.

I want a new car. She wants more ice cream. want + to infinitive They don’t want to spend their summer holidays in the mountains. I want to study biology at University.

• We can also use would like to make an invitation or to offer something to somebody. Would you like to go to the cinema tonight? Would you like a piece of cake?
