THE JUNGLE BOOK
Raksha, Mother wolf, is in her home with her cubs, her baby wolves. She hears a noise from outside.
– What is this noise? – she asks.
– It’s Shere Khan, the tiger, – says Father wolf.
– No, this isn’t Shere Khan. This is a cub.
Father wolf goes outside and he sees a man-cub all alone. Shere Khan is also there.
– Go away, Shere Khan, – says Father wolf.
– I want the man-cub – says Shere Khan.
– No, the man-cub is our cub now, – says Father wolf. – If you want him, you have to fight.
Shere Khan is a tiger, he can’t fight wolves alone. So he goes away.
Father Wolf takes the man-cub into in their home. He’s a baby, like their baby wolves. So Raksha decides to adopt him.
– We can call him Mowgli, – she says. Mowgli means ‘little frog’ in the language of the jungle. And the man-cub hasn’t got fur, like frogs!
– Mowgli is a good name, – says Father wolf. Mowgli becomes part of the wolf family.
The baby wolves grow up, and Mowgli grows up with them and learns their language. Now, he needs to be part of the pack.
One day, all the wolves meet to show their cubs and Akela, the leader of the pack, has to accept the cubs in the pack.
– Show your cubs to the pack – says Akela. One by one, the baby wolves come out. The other wolves look at them and accept them in the pack. There is one more cub: Mowgli. He goes to the centre of the pack.
– Who can speak for this cub? – The wolves are silent.
– I can – says Baloo the bear. – I’m a teacher of wolves and I can speak for him.
– I can speak for him, too, – says Bagheera, the panther. – I’m a friend of the wolves and he can be part of the pack.
The two friends speak for Mowgli: now he’s part of the pack.
Mowgli grows up with his wolf brothers and sisters. He studies with Baloo and learns to run and hunt with Bagheera. The years pass. But Shere Khan remembers about the man-cub.
– You’re a man now. It’s time for you to go to the village, – says Baloo to Mowgli one day. So Bagheera takes Mowgli to the village and goes away.
Mowgli doesn’t like the village, but he knows he has to stay there. So, he learns the human language and many other things from the humans: he learns to look after the cows and the fire. But he misses his real family, so he meets his wolf brothers and sisters every night near the village.
One night, they tell Mowgli that Shere Khan is back. He wants to kill the tiger.
One day, Mowgli takes the cows out. – Shere Khan! I’m Mowgli, the little frog. Come and fight with me! – he shouts.
Shere Khan runs to fight with Mowgli, but Mowgli is not stupid. When the tiger arrives, he scares the cows with fire. All the cows run towards Shere Khan and they kill the tiger. He takes the skin of the tiger back to the village and to the wolf pack. Akela is old, and the pack needs a new leader. The old leader has to die, but Mowgli is strong and he knows fire, so he saves Akela’s life. And they all live happily ever after.
