Discovery
The language of Babylon An English professor at the University of Cambridge, Martin Worthington, has made an extraordinary discovery: after studying for many years he has managed to understand the sounds, which make up the language of Babylon. The professor has recited* a number of texts and posted* them online, so that everyone can hear the language of the ancient Babylonians! They are mainly stories which talk about giants, monsters, strange and curious creatures who fight against the force of evil*. What if the next episode of The Chronicles of Narnia was in …. Babylonian?

Report
Ready…Steady…GO! Are you ready for the next World Championship of Athletics? No hurry, there is still a month or two to go, but they are already making preparations in South Korea.
South Korea This year the World Championship of Athletics will be held in September in Daegu, South Korea. Many countries wanted to host the World Championship of Athletics, for example Australia, Spain, Russia and the USA. South Korea was chosen for its impressive sports stadiums. An ancient sport Athletics comes from man’s need to survive. The word “athletics” derives* from the Greek word athletès which means “fight”. The Ancient Greeks were the first to transform this “fight” into sports competitions. However, it was only in 1983 that the World Championship of Athletics was organised and it is now held every two years.

A name for many sports Athletics is a combination of different sports which are divided into 5 categories* : track running, throwing and jumping, road racing, racewalking and cross-country running. Men and women compete* in separate races, but the races are the same for both*.

Sports for all! The eight most fun and famous sports.
Motorcycling It began in the 19th century in Europe, as an alternative to horse racing. There are two types of motorcycling: road and off-road. Along with Formula 1 motor racing, it is one
of the fastest and most exciting sports! “I did well at school. I was good at a lot of other things. But I wanted to race. Fast, really fast! And I did!” (Valentino Rossi)
16 8
9 (Carolina Kostner) The first people to travel on ice were the Vikings! These ancient warriors travelled using skates with blades made from reindeer and ox bones. In the 17th century, ice-skating became a popular sport and its popularity spread from Northern Europe throughout the world. “Ice-skating has the same poetry as flying!”

Skiing Skiing is the oldest method of transport invented by man, even before the invention of the wheel. Herodotus speaks of people who used long “wooden shoes” to walk on the snow. The first modern ski races were held in Norway around the mid 19th century. In the early 20th century the first international championships were held. “Skiing makes you feel free and gives you endless excitement”. (Lindsay Vonn)

10 (Usain Bolt) It’s a mix of different sports, based on running, throwing and jumping. For this reason it is known as the “Queen of Sports”. As with swimming, athletics is a sport which combines strict rules with man’s most natural movements: walking, running, jumping and throwing. “How far can I go? I don’t know, so I just keep trying!”
Athletics
Swimming It’s an ancient sport, and has been practiced for around 7000 years. But the first modern swimming races appeared in 1830 and in 1846 the first World Swimming Championship was held in Australia. Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, front crawl … whichever style you choose, you must remember one thing: “Swimming is not just floating! It is the art of dance in water”. (Federica Pellegrini)

6 (Shaquille O’Neal) Basketball began in the USA in 1891 thanks to the doctor and Physical Education teacher, James Naismith. It has been an Olympic sport since the XI Olympics, held in Berlin in 1936. It was at that competition that Naismith presented the American team with the gold medal, when they beat Canada in the final. “If basketball never existed, I would have invented it!”

Football
10
Football: there is no other sport in the world with so many fans! And, strangely, modern football was invented almost by accident! At the beginning of the 1800’s a physical education teacher from England organised a football tournament for the students of his school. It was a great success! The sport spread from school to school very quickly and was soon very popular in the whole of England, and throughout the world! The rules? Maybe there is just one: “In football, you are never the only winner!” (Alexandre Pato)

(Rafael Nadal) Tennis is known as the “sport of the nobility”. In fact, it was played only by European nobility until the 17th century. Henry VIII even had a court built in the gardens of the royal palace! “In tennis you often find yourself behind your opponent, 5-4, 6-5, but you have to fight, you have to become more aggressive, and don’t be afraid…”

A chance meeting
The fierce* battle
A brave young knight named George was travelling through Africa, when he met an old man who told him that his country was in great danger. He explained that there was an enormous dragon who was terrorising* the people and who, each day, killed and ate one of the country’s young girls. There was now only one girl left in the whole country and she was the King’s daughter. The next day it was her turn to be killed! The King had agreed that the man who killed the dragon and saved his daughter could marry the beautiful princess.
That night George slept at the old man’s house and very early the next morning he went to find the dragon. While he was travelling to the lake where the dragon lived, he met the princess, so he told her to return home to her father and not to worry.
* glossary fierce: strong and frightening legends: stories which are passed on from generation to generation patron saint: the saint who represents a country rushed: went very quickly spear: a long pointed piece of wood used for fighting struck: hit sword: a metal weapon, like a long knife 12 terrorising: frightening 12
George then went to the deep lake where the dragon was waiting for the princess. As soon as the dragon saw George, he rushed* out, breathing fire and made a noise which was louder than thunder, but George was not afraid. He struck* the monster with his spear* but it broke into a thousand pieces and George fell from his horse!
Luckily, he landed under a magical orange tree which protected him from the dragon’s fire. While he was hiding under the tree George planned his next move. As soon as he was ready, George jumped out from under the tree and ran towards the dragon. The dragon lifted his wings to strike George again but George was faster than him! He took his sword* and stabbed the dragon under his wing, who immediately fell to the ground, dead! Today, Saint George is known as a fearless knight and his day is celebrated, not just in England, but in many other countries around the world too!
