But why do we have to wear the same jumpers? Because it’s Christmas!

Have you written your Christmas cards?

It’s the first thing I did this morning when I got up.

First of all you shouldn’t have said ’this morning’. She knows that you get up at midday!

I’ve never been very good at telling lies*.

Very funny!

Yes.

Why is it such hard work for you to write Christmas cards?

Okay. I’ll write them! Good!

It isn’t at all. It’s you who gets agitated*.

Did your mum convince you to write your Christmas cards?

Do you want to sit on my shoulders too?

The new romantic comedy by the director Garry Marshall, is about to be released. It tells the story of the magical last night of the year – New Year’s Eve. The film is the sequel to the successful Valentine’s Day, in which the same actors try to resolve their relationship problems on Valentine’s Day, the day which is traditionally linked to love. The cast is really out of this world - Hilary Swank plays a career woman, Michelle Pfeiffer (a secretary who is tired of her routine life) and Robert de Niro (an elderly man who spends New Year’s Eve in hospital). The film portrays how their stories are intertwined* on New Year’s Eve. But not everyone feels the magic of this night. In the film, there’s also Ashton Kutcher who plays a boy who hates the last day of the year. Who knows if something or someone will make him change his mind...

A star is born Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born 15th April 1990 in Paris, France. Her French mother and English father were both lawyers, but after they got divorced, Emma moved to Oxford, England with her mother and brother at the age of five. Emma has always loved acting even when she was very young and started going to acting school when she was 6 years old.

Her first big break*

New projects

When she was 9 years old she went to audition* for a part in the first Harry Potter film. The people who auditioned her were impressed by her acting talent and after a total of 8 auditions she was given the part of Hermione Granger, Harry Potter’s classmate. And since then she’s gone from success to success. She has appeared in all the Harry Potter films and has often received more praise* for her acting than Daniel Radcliffe who plays the lead role*. She was a little reluctant* to commit* to the final two films, as it would mean four more years of commitment, but in the end she agreed as she couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the part of Hermione.

Recently Emma has appeared in two films – the first called My week with Marilyn which tells the story of the filming of the Marilyn Monroe film The Prince and the Showgirl and the week that Marilyn spent touring around Britain accompanied by Colin Clark, an assistant of the actor, Sir Laurence Olivier. Emma plays the part of Lucy. The film came out in November of this year. Her second project is the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower which will be released in 2012. It tells the story of Charlie who is a shy first-year university student who makes friends with Sam (played by Emma) and Patrick who take him under their wing*. Two very different roles from that of Hermione Granger!

The end of an era The final Harry Potter film The Deathly Hallows part 2 came out in 2011 and therefore Emma is now free to pursue* other interests and dreams. In fact, she has done some modelling for the fashion company Burberry and she has started studying at university. First of all, she studied at Brown University in America but has now transferred to Oxford University in England. She also enjoys dancing, singing, hockey, tennis and art in her free-time.

Tv series

Why are TV series so well-loved by TV audiences? Pamela Douglas, the author of the book “How to succeed as a professional writer in TV” explains. Many stories in one Pamela Douglas is a very famous scriptwriter who writes the stories and scenes of the actors who appear in the most popular TV series. She has won prestigious*

prizes like The Humanitas Prize, an Emmy and The Writers Guild of America. In her opinion, the secret of writing a successful series is that “in the plot* there should be many different stories that are developed from one story, so that each viewer can find his hero”. Also according to Pamela, “A series should put up the shutters* when the viewers start imgaining what’s going to happen”. In her opinion, this could be the case of Smallville, the American series that has reached its fifth season, in which the young Superman gets to know his powers.

Changing the set* According to Pamela it’s also important to change the set of the series so that the public doesn’t get bored. The series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody stars two adolescent trouble-making twins*. Until 2008 the series was set in a hotel, where the twins lived with their mother. Later it was set on a cruise ship when the twins start studying oceanography, and have lots of adventures.

Not just one star No series could last for years thanks to just one star. It’s important that all the characters, even the minor ones, are interesting. When Will Petersen, the actor who played supervisor* Grissom in CSI, announced that he wanted to leave the series, 25 milion viewers were desperate. But in any case the series is still going strong* after 200 episodes.

‘Whodunnit?’* The public’s involvement* is fundamental. CSI, an American series based on investigations by the scientific police, won the prestigious International Television Audience Award at the 50th Montecarlo TV Festival in 2010. With 73,8 milion viewers it beat even Dr. House. Psychologists say that many people would like to find ‘the guilty* person’, and that everyone loves a mystery.

Christmas is the time of year when we get together with our families and eat delicious, traditional food that we wouldn’t dream of eating the rest of the year. One such food in Britain is the traditional Christmas Pudding. A very rich dessert that is usually prepared some months before December 25th and the recipe* is often passed down from generation to generation. If you’re visiting London in December, you’ll see something very strange. Groups of people dressed in costumes running around Covent Garden trying to balance a Christmas Pudding on a tray. No, they’re not crazy! They’re taking part in the Christmas Pudding Race which takes place every year in London for charity*. It has taken place every year since 1980. The team wearing the best costume wins a trophy and if you feel hungry, you could always eat the pudding!

KID ON THE CASE

Nancy Drew Welcome back to our regular feature where we take a look at some famous fictional detectives that spend their time solving mysteries and chasing* criminals. After the very famous detectives we met in the last two issues – Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, today we meet some teenage detectives who have been entertaining* and intriguing* young people for decades.* Read on to find out more... The character She’s a fictional young amateur* detective created by Edward Stratemeyer in 1930. She lives in an invented town called River Heights with her father and their housekeeper*. Nancy’s father is a lawyer and she gets her love for solving mysteries from him. Nancy is wealthy*, very talented and pretty. She often travels to faraway places to solve mysteries such as Nairobi, Austria, Japan and Costa Rica. She is often helped by her two friends Bess and George.

Past and Present Since she first appeared in 1930, the series has been written by different ghostwriters* and Nancy’s character

has changed to fit in with* changing society. In the 1980s a new series was created and Nancy was seen as more grown up and more professional. In 2004, the original series finished and a new one was created called Girl Detective where Nancy has a mobile phone and drives an electric car.

Ever popular Despite the many changes that Nancy has gone through*, she has always remained very popular. More than 80 million of her books have been sold all over the world and the books have been translated into more than 45 languages. There have been 5 films, 2 TV shows and a number of computer games about her. In 2009, a new film came out* called Nancy Drew and starred the actress Emma Roberts.

One for the girls Nancy Drew was written by its author in 1930 as a detective story for girls as an alternative to his already successful detective series for boys – The Hardy Boys. There are many similarities between the two series. In the boys’ version Frank and Joe Hardy are brothers. They are 17 and 18 years old and live in a fictional town called Bayport. They live with their detective father, their mother and their aunt. The boys are very alike, although Frank has dark hair and Joe has blond hair. Frank is the thinker of the pair while Joe is more impulsive.

Amateur detectives Like Nancy, they spend their time solving mysteries and catching criminals and often travel to faraway locations to do this. And like the Nancy Drew series, they have been written by many different ghostwriters. They first appeared in 1927, but a new series was created in 1980 called The Hardy Boys Casefiles. However, in 2005 the original Hardy Boys Mystery series ended and a new series called Undercover Brothers was created. A more modern and up-to date series.

comeback: when a famous person retires but then decides to return to stardom injuries: when you hurt yourself picked up: held in her hand

Kim Clijsters Both victory and injury – the story of one of the strongest tennis players in the world. Let’s get to know her better.

2011 saw the victory of the young Belgian tennis player at the Australian Open, but also some physical problems which prevented her from taking part in other important tournaments. Now that the 2012 Olympics are approaching, she’s doing her best to prepare for them.

gerund superlative past simple

Names and nicknames Kim was nicknamed Killing Kim by her fans for her strong character. In Belgium they call her Our Kim because of how well she represents the country.

A famous family… Kim was born in 1983 into a famous sports family, but her life hasn’t been easy. Her dad, who was a footballer in the Belgian national team, died when she was young and her sister Elke had to abandon her career as a professional tennis player after an accident. Kim is very close to her mum and sister.

Kim first picked up* a racket at 5 years old. “Just because it was fun”, she says. She continued playing as a hobby, but at 13 years old she was sent to the famous tennis school Wilrijk as she was so good!

Retirement … Kim has won 41 international titles, but she retired from playing in 2007. She said that she did it in order to have a quieter life and because she was tired of all the injuries* that made her lose the most important tournaments.

And her comeback*! Then on 26th March 2009, she surprised everyone in a press conference announcing that “I’m returning because I miss the matches too much. I’m going to train my hardest so as to be able to face all the talented tennis players!”

Off the court… Kim loves listening to music. Her favourite singers are Tracy Chapman, Beyoncé, Anouk. She likes jogging as well as dressing up in elegant clothes. She also participates in charity work with SOS Children’s Villages, a charity that helps children who don’t have any family.

Do you know...?

She also has another funny nickname. Read the words back to front to find out. KIM KONG ____________________________________ The answer is on page 3
