Two boys are born on the same day, but their lives are very different. Edward Tudor is a prince and Tom Canty is a pauper. One day they decide to change identities. The poor boy’s dreams come true and he lives like a prince. The prince, on the other hand, discovers what life is like on the poor streets of London. But are dreams what they really seem? The boys soon find out!

Born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, Samuel L. Clemens wrote under the name of Mark Twain.

He wrote several novels, including two major classics of American literature: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He was also a riverboat pilot, journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur and inventor. Twain died on April 21, 1910.

Act one • Two boys narrator. This

is the story of a prince and a pauper.

A pauper is a poor person.

One day in London, two boys are born.

One boy is Tom Canty. His family is poor.

The other boy is Edward Tudor. His family is rich.

Edward is the Prince of Wales. His father is Henry VIII, the King of England.

narrator.

Many years later... tom [enters stage.] My name’s Tom Canty. I live in London. The streets are dirty and smelly. I’m a beggar.

I must ask people for money.

Well Tom, Where’s the money? tom canty [showing him his empty hands.] I’m sorry father, I haven’t got any money. john canty. What? No money? Go to bed now. No dinner for you! narrator. Poor Tom lies down on the cold, hard floor. tom’s mother [giving Tom a piece of bread.] Here Tom. Have some bread. narrator. Tom’s mother loves him very much. Tom falls asleep. He dreams about a different life.

there is Prince Edward. He lives in a beautiful palace and has got everything! prince edward. My name’s Edward. I’m a prince.

My servants bring me food and drink. I’ve got beautiful clothes and a big bed!

He’s hungry. tom [to a man in the street.] Please, give me some money, sir. narrator. Tom walks and walks. Soon he’s far from his home. He’s outside a great palace. It’s Westminster, the King’s palace! tom. Maybe I’ll see the prince!

I’m Edward, Prince of Wales. What’s your name? tom. Tom Canty, sir. prince edward. Have you got a family? tom. Yes, sir. But my father isn’t very kind. prince edward. Would you like to see the palace? tom. Yes, please, sir!

are lots of rooms in the palace!

The palace is warm, clean and beautiful. The boys talk about their lives. tom. Wow! Is this your home? prince edward. Yes. Where do you live? tom. I live in Offal Court. Your home is bigger than mine. My home is small and dirty. We live in a room. prince edward. In one room?! Do you like living in Offal Court? tom. It’s not all bad. I like playing with my friends.

And in summer I like swimming in the river. prince edward. Playing and swimming!

That’s fun! I haven’t got any friends. tom. Yes, but I DON’T like begging for money.

I’m always hungry too! prince edward. Servant! Bring us food and water. servant. Yes, Your Highness. prince edward. Tom, you must wash your face and hands.
