Canberra,

Welcome to the capital city of Australia: Canberra! The word Canberra derives from the ancient word Kambera, which means meeting place. It is Australia’s 8th largest city and became the country’s capital in 1908. Autumn is a very beautiful season in Canberra, as the leaves change colour on the trees in the city’s parks and gardens. Canberra is well known for its many natural attractions. As well as discovering the city’s many nature trails and walkways, you can visit one of the nature reserves to see kangaroos and wallabies! Fact: On 3rd September, Australians celebrate the Australian National Flag Day. It is the anniversary of when the Australian national flag was first raised, 110 years ago, in 1901.

Dear

My name is Sarah and I have a problem which is making me feel really sad. This year, my wonderful maths teacher has retired* and, because I’m not very good at maths, I feel really lost without her. She always explained things in a way which I could understand, even the most difficult things. Now, with this new teacher, I’m really frightened of getting behind* in class. What can I do?

Dear Sarah, Try not to worry too much. If you’ve been able to solve mathematical problems up to now, it’s because of your skill* and hard work. Try to begin the new school year with enthusiasm instead and you see what a difference it makes!

The Great River Race

12

We’ll see you on the River Thames on Saturday 17th September!

What is The Great River Race

History

The Course

It is a spectacular river marathon on the River Thames in London. It began in 1988 and has grown to become one of the most popular boat races for both professional and amateur* teams from all around the world.

In 1988, 72 competitors chose more than 20 boat types, representing six countries and created the Great River race. The competitors ranged from teenage boat enthusiasts* to elderly* sailors. The race became popular very quickly and began to attract more and more participants. Now, over 2000 competitors race in over 300 boats, competing for one of the 35 prizes available.

The race begins at 13.20 at Millwall Dock in London. A starting cannon is fired and the slowest boats begin the race first, giving them a headstart*. The faster boats join the race last so all the teams have a fair chance of winning. The boats pass under 10 bridges, including the famous Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge. They travel along the river, to Richmond, where the 22 mile (around 35.5 kilometres) race ends.

The Boats ‌ and the Costumes The boats in the race are traditional in style. They range from Norwegian Longboats to Chinese Dragonboats to Hawaiian war canoes. Many of the teams wear amazing costumes to add a splash of colour to the day!

Celebrity Starters! The race has also attracted a number of celebrities who come to fire the starting cannon*. Amongst these famous “starters is the singer and songwriter Sting, actress Jane Horrocks and model Jerry Hall.
